[libreoffice-users] Re: Calc: suppress header/footer from page 15 onwards

2019-12-25 Thread David S. Crampton
Brian and all,

I expect that the technique of creating a Style for each sheet will work. As
it was this afternoon I didn't have the moxo to work through the Edit Styles
dialogs.

You asked what my clumsy workaround was: OK, with some shyness... but it got
the job done by 3 pm!

Select Sheet1 with an already defined Print Area. Check or make the Format
Page | Footer specify . Print! In my case I printed to PDF. PDF
looks good; save it as Sheet1.PDF

Now, the dufus: Return to the ODS; select Sheet2. Go to Format Page | Footer
and change the text to . Now again print to PDF. This will create
Sheet2.PDF. Looks good.

Now, paying the monthly Adobe "Cloud" subscription I have available the
"Combine Pages" functionality. Specify "Combine"; navigate and select the 2
PDF from above. Combine and it creates a "Binder1.PDF". Examine, close,
rename as desired.

Next month I will be asked to again update and publish this contact list. I
will work with page styles first.

David

[libreoffice-users] Re: Calc: suppress header/footer from page 15 onwards

2019-12-25 Thread David S. Crampton
Here it is 9 years later. I just encountered a need to have Sheet1 use
Footer1 (Sheet1 prints in 3 pages). Then Sheet2 use Footer2 (another 3
pages). With focus on either Sheet1 or Sheet2 to set 'Format | Page |
Footer ... ' changes the Footer to be the same in both Sheets. I worked
around it but clumsy and error prone.

Using v 6.2.8.2

[libreoffice-users] Re: Update SQL does nothing using Run SQL directly button

2012-10-07 Thread David S. Crampton
Jay Noel,

One other effect of the SQL button in Query Design appears to be that it
disables the GUI style design view. If one wants to use both the GUI table
(to get started with the basics) and then fine tune with written SQL, you
have to sacrifice the formatting of the SQL phrases. If you return to the
GUI table, and then to the SQL, the SQL phrases will be unformatted: just a
long line.

John and the others who responded,

It took me a while to realize that the useful SQL menu is available only on
the main / opening window of the db. The SQL button in the Query Design view
still appears to do nothing.

I'm finally getting some traction. I acknowledge and appreciate the
stylistic suggestions. This year and month data is very unlikely to change
once the transaction record is accurately entered.

Thank you, all,

2012-10-03 Thread David S. Crampton
Register1a is a table with field Trans-Date of type TIMESTAMP. Field
Trans-Date-Year is either TIMESTAMP or INTERGER. I have tried with both.

Update Register1a Set Register1a.Trans-Date-Year =

Looks like is should be a very simple SQL statement. It does absolutely
nothing.

The statement won't run with the F5 key (the run button). It gives The
given command is not a SELECT statement.

I'm trying to apply SQL learned elsewhere, mostly in MicroBloat Access, and
I'm getting nowhere.

Help will be appreciated.

Pedro,

Thank you. Your instructions are very clear. I did this. Same result.

I read the content of javasettings_Windows_x86.xml

It contains a line:
java xmlns=http://openoffice.org/2004/java/framework/1.0;
xmlns:xsi=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance;

I tried to go to http://openoffice.org/2004/java/framework/1.0; in my
(Opera) browser.

Got a redirection to http://www.openoffice.org/2004/java/framework/1.0;
which displayed a customized Error 404.

Looks like Oracle/Openoffice has diddled the works. Is there a more recent
page for whatever is meant by xmlns?

jre-7u7-windows-i586.exe as downloaded from filehippo.

Restarted machine. Still same behavior in Base. Yes in Tools | Options |
LibreOffice | Java there is only the one registered Java. In Windows Control
Panel | Programs is listed only 1 entry: Java 7 update 7

Should I revert to the java 6?

Thanks for your patience,

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: some text not printing

2012-01-23 Thread David S. Crampton
An idea based on my experience with this type of long-lived document. Look
for a corruption in the file format. Look for an older version of it
(from your archive / backup systems) that might print correctly.

True, this idea comes from experience with M$ products. But the formats
are not so much different. A long document that receives hundreds of small
changes over a period of 1 or 2 years is likely to acquire a format
corruption. One such sign is a difference between the file size as
reported by LibreOffice and the file size as reported by disk file manager
in OS.

would not expect this to change much, but it might.

Did you try exporting it in various formats, then reimporting
it? If you've had it for several years, it's probably more likely in

OpenOffice format plus text?

Do you still get the problem exporting it as text, reimporting
then printing it? If you still get the problem, you must have some
funny control characters that get exported with the text. There are
tools to scan for characters that are NOT vanilla ascii, but I'm not
familiar with them. Once you can get the text to print as you want,
you need to restore formatting and anything else in the original file.
I'd delete all the text that does not print plus a bit more, verify
that everything retained prints, then add back the text deleted from
the *.txt version. If that does not work, then I'd work from the *.txt
version and add all the formatting, etc., a part at a time, saving
intermediate files until you get what you want.

Binary search techniques could speed this work, potentially:
If you have one version that has the problem and another version that
doesn't, then identify the differences and systematically try a version
roughly half way between one that works and one that doesn't until you
fix the problem.

  Hope this helps.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: When will be a Web-Version of OOo/LO available?

2011-12-14 Thread David S. Crampton
I will speak up a little for the positive case for cloud-based computing
and apps. In the IT Manager position I recently left the motivator for
looking at web apps was PEOPLE; specifically problems with our in-house
people.

Making a long story short, I had built an entirely in-house M$ shop
supported by people I hired plus occasional consulting especially for
network / Cisco support. We had about 12 servers, 160 desktops, a very
elaborate WAN, M$ Suite plus an in-house M$ WSUS for their flood of
updates. The team was 3 people: myself, a sys admin and a desktop tech.

The workload was heavy and I relied on the motivation of the two hired
staff to be learning M$ stuff toward becoming full M$ experts. The
overall economics of in-house machines and fully burdened in-house staff
made sense for a while.

The people problems started as competition between my two staff people.
Productivity and teamwork began to stink; deadlines were flaunted;
Helpdesk calls took longer. For a million different reasons (excuses)
neither I nor the organization found a way to deal with the people
problems. We had built in an addiction to in-house expertise and when our
own people went sour nobody, myself included, had the cojones to correct
it.

So we started to look at web apps. The economics were looking good. Buy
more bandwidth, pay the monthly costs and get rid of at least 1 bad actor,
maybe both! I left their employment mostly for personal reasons, a death
in the family. But even so, mostly is the key word.

Six months later the organization has increased the bandwidth and
(temporarily?) solved lots of WAN performance issues. The people problems
and how to support the burden of M$ apps and their security issues remains
unsolved. Status quo.

In summary, I agree with all the technical reasons and security concerns
expressed about web / cloud apps. It was people-problems that blew down
the house.

Upon reflection, this calls for LO to build a community of support people
that can support small to medium sized businesses and avoid the siren call
of M$ style big money and big ego. Good luck! No, seriously, good luck
to us all.

Personally, I do not like the idea of cloud based computing, for
security reasons and ownership of files. If the connection to the
Internet is down on your end or theirs, you do not have access to your
data.

Excellent points.

The whole 1980s migration from central computers w/dumb terminals to
PCs was motivated in large part by the desire to spread the computing
load and sever the umbilical cord/chain that central mainframe
computers required. In most rural areas of the U.S. today, dial-up
modem is as good as it gets, and that won't facilitate the cloud.

I was part of the movement. I even saw PCs used as dumb terminals for a
time with software like Kermit being used since it had the ability to
upload/download the files to the central systems like we do with FTP
clients and the web.

Yes, I know a lot of people who either can only get dial-up in their
areas, or cannot afford the price for broadband. I am currently lucky
to have broadband, but with a fixed income, and the fees going up for
everything, I may not have it in the future. Or, I may keep it and drop
my current digital phone system for some cheaper and less reliable one
that is based off my PC or my purchased network device that does
Internet phone calls.

So, if you want to use cloud computing and file storage, you better
remain in the cities. In the more rural areas where people like to live
to get away from the crowd, you are out of luck.

useful user feedback. Not even an event registered to event logs.

If you download a lot you might see it in other downloads. I answered a

I can see it in theory. The scanner is looking for tokens or sequences
of binary code that are associated with virus / worm executables. It's
not improbable that a huge download, using compression, would generate
enough of similar looking binary string to trigger a false positive.

Why the antivirus scanner doesn't tell you what's happened? Mystery.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc: Identifying duplicate cell values with conditional formatting?

2011-12-12 Thread David S. Crampton

Hylton,

I can offer a few general considerations and thoughts. Your problem
statement appears to contain two objectives:

a) to make consistent the case of all the elements; all Upper Case; all
Lower Case; whatever. It seems the case makes no difference to the
meaning of the record. The case is just an artifact of the typing style of
the data input person(s). In this situation, a mass application of =UPPER
or =LOWER and placing the result in a new sheet would suffice.

I think no amount of special formatting will reliably catch your eye to
eliminate manually all the instances of differing case.

b) the deduplication. Once the case issue is resolved you will have rows
with all elements exactly equal. This deduplication should be done by
exporting the 68000 x 10 sheet to a database and running a deduplication
query. Again any of the visual tricks to identify duplicate rows will be
unreliable and you will be guaranteed to miss at least a few.

At this point my advise bogs down. I have past experience with the M$
Access product; recent versions of Access have a pre-written deduplication
query. It is not available to me right now because I have left my
workplace and don't have an installation of that recent version of M$
Suite.

Use caution in the deduplication process; make lots of backups. It is a
delete-type query and data will be lost! Hopefully only the duplicates but
you never know.

I hope this vague hand waving is of some help to you,

I am doing the alphabetical sort via Col A.

I can use find to search for the duplicate record row once I know what I

values in the Col A are the same and vice versa/

On 136000 cells this is a FAIR mission!

I would like to know if there is a conditional formula I could use that
could highlight the differences in one column when cells in the other
column are the same. I am thinking of a formula that says if the cell
contents are the same as any other cell in a range, apply the
conditional format. Of course this conditional would need to be added
onto all 136000 cells. :(

That way I can highlight the 'error' cells and find them easily and
correct them or add a new row of data.

Any pointers would be appreciated for doing this in Calc as an external
database is not available. What elements of the formula can I
investigate?

Many thanks

Re: [libreoffice-users] Identifying the correct row in Spreadsheet formulas

2011-12-09 Thread David S. Crampton

Ian,

The If 'Month'=Jan then Row=1 relationship can be a VLOOKUP, MATCH and
INDEX family of spreadsheet functions. I have sometimes used the INDIRECT
functions but these get very cumbersome and fragile.

This looks like it would be better done as a query in Base. I used
combinations of spreadsheets, for the raw data, and databases for the
monthly reporting in my budget/expense tracking work.

_ANALYSIS FOR (Month)_

Name - Cell n + Cell n (where the 'n' has to be the correct Month Row)
Name - Cell n + Cell n (ie it increments by one for each month)

I have simplified the above but this is the basic concept.

How can I modify the formula to pick-up the correct Row for the month I

Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc: How to refresh advanced filter automatically

2011-12-05 Thread David S. Crampton

Oleg,

It might help us to know more about your application. There are functions
within Calc to do this under the menu item: Data. Using these
database-like operations in Calc (or any other spreadsheet) requires a
reasonably experienced level of user. The user must place the 15 in
exactly the correct cell and then navigate to the portion of the
spreadsheet which will display the result.

This type of operation, IMHO, is better done in a database, ie. LO Base.
The user input can be gathered through a Form. The results of the query
are quick and interactive.

If you are just beginning to design this application for users please make
a good decision about spreadsheet versus database for the engine. I just
finished 10 years of IT Management which included troubleshooting massive
and tangled spreadsheet apps that should have been databases from the
beginning.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Stuck with 3.3 forever?

2011-12-03 Thread David S. Crampton

Expanding a bit on Jonny's concatenation:

A1: (null string)
A2: 1 (numeric)
A3: =A1+A2 displays #VALUE
A4: =A1 A2 displays left-aligned 1. It is a text result.
A5: =A2 + A4 displays a right-aligned 2. It is a numeric result.

Ergo, the + operator gave #VALUE result when combining a null string and
a numeric but gives a numeric when combining a text string which can be
interpreted as a numeric with a numeric.

Per my mini-sermon (earlier today) on debugging and preferring strict
type-based behavior, I would prefer A5 to also display #VALUE.

Can you provide an example file? This used to be a problem but it is
fixed

I could, but it's not needed, I think. I just did this simple test in
3.3.4 and 3.4.4:

Open LibreOffice Calc from scratch.

A1:
=

A2:
=A1+1

In LibreOffice 3.3.4 (Ubuntu 10.10), A2 displays:
1

In 3.4.4 (Ubuntu 11.10), OOO340m1 (Build:402), A2 displays:
#VALUE!
Try in A1 no data/empty cell and in A2 =A1+1, you will get 1 in A2. You
are adding a text and number and the + operator is not used for
concatenation.

This has to do with operator overloading, are other, similar, operations
allowed when using '+'. Some may allow it and others may not,
restricting its use to mathematical operations only. LO uses the ''
operator for concatenation.

If you use A1 = and A2 = A1 1 you get 1.

[libreoffice-users] How do I enter a numeric into a Calc cell from LO Basic macro?

The issue appears to be that uno:EnterString requires a string as its
parameter. If the parameter is a numeric (an integer in my case), the cell
is left empty.

How to enter an integer value from LO Basic into a cell without having to
klutzy-convert it to a string? Is there an equivalent to Calc's
Text(ref, format) function that will execute in Basic?

I've searched Andrew's book (very good book) and other web resources about

Re: [libreoffice-users] Mail merge doesn't send e-mails

2011-11-20 Thread David S. Crampton

This sounds to me like an e-mail processing issue; not an LO problem.

What exactly is the evidence that some of the e-mails are not sent?
How large is the document that you are trying to send?
What is your e-mail environment? Your client? Your messaging server?
What is your antivirus environment? Are you in control of it?

In my humble experience, mass mailings (5 might be interpreted as mass
depending on the antivirus / antispam enviroment) are very fragile.
Attachments (your document) can be unexpectedly bulky and trigger ISP
traffic limits. The slightest syntax error in the list(s) of recipients
can make it appear that the entire mailing went wrong.

I don't propose to troubleshoot an e-mail / server problem in this forum.
I'm trying to see on which side of the fence your issue may be hiding.

Good luck,

Backspace key behaves correctly in Calc and in Writer. In the Basic IDE,
however, it eats the character to the right of the cursor. Should eat

Toggling Insert and Overlay work as expected. Delete key as expected.
Delete eats the character to the right of the cursor.

Quick search through Bugzilla returned way too many results on Backspace.

[libreoffice-users] How do I enable Create new Python macros?

2011-11-16 Thread David S. Crampton

How do I enable Create new Python macros?

In the Python Macros dialog the buttons for Create, Edit, Rename, Delete
are greyed out.

The Run button behaves correctly: it is greyed out until one of the sample
Python macros is selected from the tree in the left hand pane.

Re: [libreoffice-users] How do I enable Create new Python macros?

2011-11-16 Thread David S. Crampton

Tom Drew,

Path to experimental features is Tools | Options | LibreOffice |
General.

Been there, done that.

Drew's info about the editor leads to next question: Where is the Python
interpreter? Still in LO? How to address it / launch it?

Or should I install Python as a self-standing language?

The fact that the sample Python scripts execute properly implies that a
Pyton environment is already within LO. I would regale the forum with the
story of the optimist's birthday present but ... I digress.

I fully agree with ditching not great editors.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Problem: LibreOffice remembers the last folder I was in (open/save dialog)

2011-11-09 Thread David S. Crampton
I wish to comment on this issue. It' more in the nature of how to design
the UI rather than a defect in the Suite. I used MSO both in corporate
environments and personally for many years. Rarely did I use M$'s My
Documents as the storage location for any document. In MSO, it is My
Documents that is the default location for any File Open or File Save
operation. MSO insistence on having My Documents be the default location
was a universal hindrance. We in IT constantly struggled to thwart it. The
most we could do was redirect it to a networked share.

It is not clear in Mike's posting what exactly he would like the behavior
to be. I would hope Mike is not requesting the M$ paradigm. I prefer the
existing behavior in LO.

Mike's suggestion about an option somewhere to control this behaviour?
is very worthy. Some will like the My Documents paradigm; me, not so
much.

I most frequently use the Recent Documents list within LO. The 10
listed items there are just right historical coverage.

Respectfully blustering,

It doesn't matter whether I use Writer, Calc or Impress. Also, if I

[libreoffice-users] name-define-edit causes crash in LO Calc v3.4.3

2011-11-05 Thread David S. Crampton

Context: in Calc of LO v3.4.3 on Windows XP Pro. I

I record my checkbook into Calc. Four columns are, Check #, Debit$,
Credit$, Balance.

Each month adds about 40 rows (checks and other transactions) to the
columns. At the end of each month some of the transactions have not yet
cleared the into my bank statement.

I have a named range, outstanding checks, which spans these uncleared
items. There are, say, 10 items in this range.

In October, for example, outstanding checks is $A1:$D9. At the end of
November I want to redefine outstanding checks to be, say, $A31:$D40.

The named range outstanding checks is used in links in other related
spreadsheet files. It is necessary to have this name remain constant.

What fails:

Insert | Names | Define: brings up Define Names dialog;
Initially, in the Define Names dialog, Scope=Global, Name=empty, Listbox
contains my outstanding checks, Assigned To is greyed out.

Click on outstanding checks in the listbox;
Assigned To becomes active and shows the currently defined $A1:$D9.
Observe that the button Add becomes relabeled to Modify.

Ignoring, in this first case, the Modify button:
Click into the Assigned To box.
Type in the edits to rewrite $A1:$D9 to $A31:$D40.
Click button OK.
LO Calc crashes. Every time.

Upon restart LO Calc does file recovery. Recovery is successful. Range is
still defined as the original $A1:$D9.

Alternate GUI method:
Click Modify button to initiate the same edit.
Same crash behavior.

Other info:
OOo v3.3.0 (the last version I used prior to LO) performs this op
successfully; that is, the manually typed redefinition is accepted and
behaves properly.

Workaround:
Create a newly named defined range each month. For example, outstanding
checks October; outstanding checks November, etc. However...

The named range is used in other Calc sheets files to report on each
month. The linkages in those target files must be similarly edited. Pain!

I did an amateur's search of Bugzilla prior to writing this. Hundreds of
define results but not on this AFAIK. If no clues come from Users forum
I will post as new bug.

Re: [libreoffice-users] flip columns in calc

2011-11-03 Thread David S. Crampton
I would think of each column as a row of a database. Add a row above the
db range. Populate it with characters in a sequence which, when sorted in
ascending order, will put the data columns in your desired order. Use
Data | Sort GUI processes to sort the columns as columns in that
ascending order.

Transpose converts rows to columns and columns to rows.

Stephan,

I don't think the bugs described in those 2 articles are the same
behavior issue. Those descriptions and the discussion of is it a bug or
is it emulating Excel are too dense for my brain at least this evening.

I'm an experienced, if somewhat uncreative, Excel user. I never tried to
extend a range dependent on the filled range of an adjacent column/row.
My thought process in observing the behavior on which I reported had no
such expectation.

In short, I think I'm reporting something different.

[libreoffice-users] in Calc: Keyboard trouble with Ctrl+Shift+RightArrow

2011-10-31 Thread David S. Crampton

Context:
in Calc of LO 3.4.3 on WinXP Pro
The cell range L155:AA155 contains empty cells. The cells on either end of
that range are filled with numbers. The cell above L155 contains a
formula. The task is to copy the formula from L154 to L155, make an edit,
extend the range from L155 to AA155, Edit | Fill Right.

The keystokes:
In L154: Ctrl+C
Down Arrow: moves to L155
Ctrl+V: paste
Esc: terminate the dotted border focus on L154
F2: make the small edit
Enter: terminate the edit
Ctrl+Shift+RightArrow: SHOULD extend to AB156 where it finds the next
filled cell in the row.
~: ACTUALLY extends selection to the entire column L.
()

This unexpected column selection is, of course, very disorienting to one's
eyeballs and brain.

Workaround
start as above until:
F2: make the small edit
Enter: terminate the edit
RightArrow (once): shift focus from L155 to M155
LeftArrow (once): shift focus from M155 to L155
Ctrl+Shift+RightArrow: SHOULD and DOES extend to AB156 where it finds the
next filled cell in the row.

I use the M$ Natural Keyboard. The defective behavior results using either
of the possible keys for RightArrow: the 4-keypad compass set or the
NumberPad (NumLock off).

[libreoffice-users] How may I read the value of a cell into a macro variable?

2011-10-28 Thread David S. Crampton

This question has two parts: simple and more complex:

simple: I wish to read the value of the currently selected cell (in Calc,
of course) into a variable in the macro language (Libre Basic). Script
example please. and thank you!

more complex: AFAIK the LibreHelp does not document the stuff like:

dispatcher.executeDispatch(document, .uno:GoToCell, , 0, args2())

I used to be pretty skilled at recording macros and then modifying them.
Where do I go to find things related to uno:GoToCell? Universal Network
Objects? Can't find the starting point.

Thank you for an orientation,

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: OO Base will not run in LO Base

2011-10-28 Thread David S. Crampton
A common technique for testing data structures is to populate the data
with lorem ipsum text.

See: www.lipsum.com.

You obtain the text, parse it and de-duplicate as necessary. Load it into
your structures.

There are many advantages to this technique. In this case the db could be
populated, fully functioning, and no personal data is interchanged.

If you send me the ODB file in private [...], I can assure you it will

I'm always puzzled by this sort of claim. The subjects of this personal

not be distributed beyond the audience they anticipated when they
provided the information. If it gets to you, that expectation - that
confidence - has already been betrayed. It doesn't matter what you
promise to do or not to do with the information: if you have it, it is
no longer confidential.

Perhaps you think that confidentiality is respected if you undertake not

that I ask you for the information; following this argument, you would
be justified in passing it on to me, provided I promised also to keep it

there is nothing to stop me then making use of the same exception that
you have applied. Do you see where the argument is leading? By this
theory, it is perfectly permissible for everybody on the planet to see
the information, provided they all undertake to keep the information
confidential - with this new, looser, useless meaning.

When I offer someone information in confidence, I expect that it will go
no further - not even to the recipient's lawyer, let alone someone
else's. But you are by no means alone: many people think they can
betray any secret as long as they are assured that the next person will
behave the same way, receiving the same empty assurance.
