[libreoffice-users] EMail mailmerge - does it work?

2013-09-14 Thread Fabian Rodriguez

Hi

In the past I had used the email mailmerge features in LibreOffice with
some problems, and was wondering if it works now?

I still see it in the menus but before setting up a proper data source
and going throught the wizard I just wanted to ask here. I seem to
remember it depended on Java and it would be removed or rewritten at
some point.

Thanks for any information about this.

Regards,

Fabian

No, LibreOffice does not provide an equivalent to MS Projetc, for example.

Here's a useful list and comparison of free open source project
management software. You can sort by license to make it easier to
compare by such criteria:

Sharepoint needs to be configured with CMIS support, last I heard this
was not trivial.

Cedric Bosdonnat would know about this, I asked on IRC and he was
looking for someone with such a setup to test further.

It's still weird that such borders can't actually be *created* within

[libreoffice-users] The best cordless presenter for Impress? Logitech R-RB5 or..?

2013-01-31 Thread Fabian Rodriguez

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

A few years ago I went out to LinuxExpo (2008) and we needed a cordless
presenter. After testing about a dozen (I kid you not!) I found this gem:

Logitech R-RB5 2.4 GHz Cordless Presenter
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/support/175?crid=402

The range is crazy (I tested >100 m in open areas) and despite heavy
wifi interference it's always done very well in crowded conferences. It
also works out of the box in GNU/LInux (I primarily use Trisquel now, a
Debian derivative, but tested in many others).

It was expensive at the time (U$100) and it's been discontinued now in
favor of other models:
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/support/presenter

It can still be found on eBay and classified ads sites, though.

I was wondering if anyone here is using the other presenters Logitech
offers, specially in GNU/Linux. What has been your experience?

Anyways, if you look for a fantastic range and easy to use cordless
presenter, the above is my personal favorite.

Cheers,

F.

AFAIK the only way to accomplish this is by importing in Google Docs,
editing with their application, and saving / exporting back to ODT.

It's extremely useful to build new Windows systems (ie mass installs).
It's not free open source though.

So don't use it. Use one of the free open source alternatives,
testit/file a bug report to help fix/test it:

Because you may have a "conflict between configuration profiles or
during normal usage *that leads to a crash* or data loss".

/ THAT LEADS TO A CRASH *** <--- POSSIBLE HARM TO YOUR SYSTEM*/ (ie.
software/OS normal operation)

If your data isn't critical, this won't matter much. I run similar
configurations on a Windows test system for example.

I believe in your very first post you also indicated the forks will
differ so much in the future that this won't remain practical/compatible
enough.

When this happened, it hit me hard. I lost data. I had advised a bunch

This improves over time, but I generally prefer not increasing the odds

I think you should.

If you find a conflict between configuration profiles or during normal
usage that leads to a crash or data loss, it would be appreciated if you
can file a bug on the three versions you run so they can be adjusted to
better coexist.

Keep in mind your use case is specific enough that there may not be
significant effort to getting it fixed, though.

Why should they use LibreOffice if all they want is cheap MS Office?
Idealism? Masochism?

Mostly, common sense.

I asked about this to Canonical support. Here is their reply with
regards to Ubuntu:
"OpenJDK 7 is affected too. Please note that in Precise and Oneiric,
openjdk-7 is in universe, so updating it is not a priority [ for
Canonical]. So in the meantime use OpenJDK 6."

Knowing Oracle's strict updates schedule, version 7 won't have updates
before next month, which may then take some time to reach the proper
community channels.

This echoes the recommendations I've seen here to user version 6 as its
more stable with LibO.

Thanks for all the replies,

Hi all

I saw this a few days ago, I'd like to know what should I make of it?:

I never install Java when I install LibreOffice, but a few people end up
installing it.

I have seen a few threads about it in the fr-discuss list, but nothing
clear/concise (although I may have missed a post or two).

Thanks for any information.

That's the goal of LibrePlanet Haïti: get local help/exposure for such
projects. Internet access is not widespread, though, so collaboration
via mailing list/online is not as effective and quick as elsewhere. The
same work that can be done for LibO will be happening for other
projects, so I hope to get more people connected via LP Haiti and take
it from there. Above all, I hope someone local leads that :)

using it as the starting point for creating their own version. Take out
the parts not needed and adding those that are. I have been told that
other "groups" have done that over the past year or so since the NA-DVD
has been online.

Of course, but given the limited resources and time, translating all of
it to Creole is impractical, if even possible.
Even updating the current systems and LibreOffice or having up-to-date
installers will prove challenging.

I noticed, however it is outdated :( That extension seemed abandoned
until I got in touch with its main dev - I am trying to get him to list
it on the official LibO site, update it, etc. I didn't distribute many
copies of the NA-DVD as it was in English and contained too many files
that were not directly relevant. I am thinking how I can contribute to
improve this.

Thanks! It's really easy to work there as free software in general is
highly compatible with values they already have: sharing, helping,
improving, re-sharing, etc.

[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice installed by default on recycled computers

Hi

I am happy to announce that all PCs recycled at MicroRecycCoop (MRC) in
Montreal have been shipping with LibreOffice for some months now:
http://microrecyc.wordpress.com/

A couple of weeks ago I came back from a trip to Haiti where my mandata
was to deliver + install a 50 PC lab and network, whil etraining local
staff + students. They had LibreOffice for Windows pre-installed on all
PCs, in addition to being dual-boot Ubuntu / Trisquel systems which
already included LibreOffice. This all started when I went into MRC's
office and starting talking to its owner about putting GNU/Linux and
LibO on their systems... :) After a year or so I am happy to see the
results!

The school I went to is part of a network of several buildings & schools
where I had the opportunity to have similar discussions and sometimes
leave copies of LibO and GNU/Linux live CDs.

I also copied / gave away ~60 copies of the installers during several
workshops there, it turned out great. I didn't know there is a spelling
dictionary for creole! That extension for LibreOffice and other
free-software related projects are listed here now:

[libreoffice-users] How to export the bibliography DB to Zotero?

2012-06-25 Thread Fabian Rodriguez

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi

I have a database of ~3000 entries that I would like to export to Zotero.

What would be the recommended way of doing this? I can't seem to find
such information in Zotero forums. I thought I'd ask here as I know my
way around LibreOffice better than Zotero.

This seems like a similar problem although it describes importing from
the bibliography *text*, not the OOo/LibO database:
http://www.zotero.org/support/kb/importing_formatted_bibliographies

At ~3000 entries, it's impractical to create a new document with *all*
entries, not to mention (most possible) data missing when reimporting that.

A friend mentioned using RDF as an intermediary format, or .bib, but
again I would have to have a document with all my references (this
doesn't import all refs from the database AFAIK):
http://www.estm.co.uk/blog/software/export-openoffice-writer-bibliography-to-zotero.html

Any information on how to do this would be appreciated.

Cheers,

If you can't trust their certificate, you can't trust any certificate
they provide. If I go to that site with only http, then I don't get an
error, but only because their certificate is not verified.
>

I realize I should have provided some more detail.

Perhaps CaCert is just not for you. If you want identity assurance,
CaCert is *definitely not for you*:
"[...]certificates are considered weak because CAcert does not emit any
information in the certificates other than the domain name or email
address (the /CommonName/ field in X.509 certificates)."

CACert's root certificate can't afford to be included in some browsers, see:
"Traditionally vendors seeking to have their root certificates included
in browsers (directly or via the underlying OS infrastructure like
Safari via OS X's Keychain) would have to seek an expensive Webtrust
<http://www.webtrust.org/> audit (~$75,000 up-front plus ~$10,000 per
year). While achievable for commercial CAs who typically charge per
certificate year, this is typically out of the reach of non-profit
organisations like CAcert. "
http://wiki.cacert.org/InclusionStatus

That's why you see the warning messages (again, read them carefully,
they are not security breaches or "hacking" proof).

Self-signed certificates have specific uses (and pros/cons), see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-signed_certificates

Please read the Wikipedia article I've linked before, it has important,
summarized information if you can't read all of CACert's detailed
documentation and rules:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cacert

It's not some trivial subject, sorry I can't elaborate forever on this.

*The bottom line is if you don't want the warnings, can't afford the
time to explain them, and have the money, pay a commercial provider and
realize you are trusting some unknown corporation (rather than yourself
and the combination of CACerts' web of trust).* If you think trusting
any corporation is better, just search for "ssl certificates stolen" and
you'll see what I mean.

Best,

Fabian

Ask for another format, or ask to file the same document in some other
way. Complain, complain, complain. Be very precise about why it's not a
good practice to do that.

To the extent that LibreOffice integrates PDF import and export
functions, there isn't much point in extending this discussion much
longer unless one can propose a valid, better/equivalent alternative. I
personally think an online implementation (via web forms+database/email)
is better suited for this specific case. I can't see a good reason to
use PDF forms except in exceptionally highly custom-formatted scenarios.
Then again, if your questionnaire requires such formatting it may
benefit from some simplification. Here's a list of possible technical
issues of using PDF:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pdf#Technical_issues

If and when there is absolutely no alternative to using a PDF, I'd
suggest you point your audience to this resource for a good, free+open
source PDF reader:
http://pdfreaders.org/

Adobe's reader software is notoriously bloated, and the frequent updates
are there because the reader includes several other dozen formats that
Adobe wants to be readable on every system it's installed on (in
addition to advanced features only available in commercial versions)

What about patents and openness of the PDF standard? This page provides
such details:
http://pdfreaders.org/os.en.html

Microsoft licenses are vey much 100% free and legal to obtain by
students/faculty staff pretty much worldwide now:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DreamSpark_Premium

It's not the same situation with MS software although I see your point.
No Microsoft software is considered an ISO standard and there aren't
100% free open source software implementations of any MS software that I
know of as is the case with the PDF format, so I'd be use such examples
with care - otherwise you'll get the opposite effect when trying to
advocate free, open standards.

Why do you want to do this with LibreOffice?

This strikes me as something relatively simple to do on a web site.

What distribution are you using?

QuickStarter was at the origin of a rather nasty bug that prevented
shutting down/logging out as reported in this Ubuntu bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/562027

It's resolved now, but unless you're using LibO 3.5.0 or greater, you
won't have the fix. I can't say if that's the same for other non-Debian
derivatives, though.

What are your reasons for using QuickStarter in GNU/Linux?

If it's only for faster startup speed, remember memory is treated
different than Windows. Even in the slowest environments, once
LibreOffice has loaded once (any component: Writer, Calc, etc), the next
times the startup time improves a lot. You can use a workaround in
Ubuntu to accomplish this for first-time run and get that "oh, it loads
fast" *perception*, specially if you turn off the system often (which
negates the benefits of memory caching during a single session). I may
be oversimplifying a bit here, hoping the point comes across.

See this workaround, should work in other Debian derivatives too:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/562027/comments/120

Other simple optimizations include using RAM as storage, mounting /tmp
in RAM, using SSD storage, etc. - with varying levels of care required
:) Don't do this unless you're running LibO 3.5.1 or greater or you may
hit this one too with worse results (data loss):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/817326

Another more important problem is the 3.4.6 will soon be "Enf of Life"
(or already is).

If someone finds problems in 3.5.x we need to get bug reports before
they install 3.4.6 again. Some times acceptable workarounds are found,
other times when a regression is confirmed the bugx fix may come very
quickly. It's a compromise, and everyone should decide by themselves.

"The Marketing list" is not a compact body of unified opinions, so
please don't jump to conclusions as to what anyone there can do or not.

Distrowatch really isn't for that.

For Ubuntu I've been documenting that here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LibreOffice
It's also the first result in most search engines if you search "Ubuntu
LibreOffice".

You can also check here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=libreoffice&searchon=names&suite=all§ion=all

Debian and other derivatives have similar sites:
http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=libreoffice&searchon=names&suite=all§ion=all
http://packages.trisquel.info/search?keywords=libreoffice&searchon=names&suite=all§ion=all
(actually, identical)

TDF could keep a record to distribution-specific records/links such as
the above, I think it's useful, but ultimately it's each distro's job to
make that information available (which they do, see above).

Hi,

Using GMail for a mail merge campaign is probably not ideal, there are

Please read again carefully. I didn't advise to seek OOo training, but
rather OOo /trainers/. LibO being a close relative, they will most
probably consider adding it (or replacing OOo) to their offering.

Thanks for any pointers.

Hi Deon,

I'd encourage you to search on the web for "OpenOffice.org training" and
contact whoever provides such training clearly indicating your goals,
budget (or lack thereof) and timelines. If someone already offers free
or paid training for OOo, there are high chances they will consider
adapting their material or using the existing material from LibreOffice
to help you.

I had a good experience in the pas with Solveig Haugland -

You can also try Lanedo in Germany http://www.lanedo.com/libreoffice.html

If you want to have LibO apps loading faster there are other ways than

[libreoffice-users] OwnCloud 3 released, "ODT is planned for future releases"

2012-02-11 Thread Fabian Rodriguez

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

A couple of weeks ago OwnCloud 3 was released:

"The Internet ? January 27, 2012 ? ownCloud, the popular open source
file, sync and share project announced today improvements to
functionality and stability which will enable users to get more than
ever out of their privately-hosted and owned file-sharing cloud.

Released today and available for download now, ownCloud Version 3
enables users to share files and folders with others from their
privately controlled infrastructure. Major new features in this release
include the introduction of an application store which allows users to
take advantage of the extensibility of owncloud; and the ability to
directly edit text files from a browser. ownCloud is the only technology
to offer such functionality, made possible because of its open and
modular nature."

This bit caught my attention, specially the last sentence:

"ownCloud Version 3 gives users the unique ability to access and edit
documents in multiple ways. Users can access files directly if ownCloud
is mounted via WebDAV, access them offline if the file is synced locally
with
the upcoming syncing client, or access and edit files directly from within
a browser with the new text editor.

The browser based text editor supports 35 programming languages for syntax
highlighting, drag and drop text, automatic indent and
outdent, unstructured / user code folding and live syntax checker (for
JavaScript, Coffee and CSS). The editor is based on the ACE
JavaScript Editor. The editor supports basic text fles. Editing more
advanced formats like doc(x) and ODT is planned for future releases."

[libreoffice-users] Window focus bug when importing a file into Calc

2012-01-27 Thread Fabian Rodriguez

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi

Before reporting this as a bug I wanted to know if Mac and Gnu/Linux
users can reproduce it

The problem: When importing a text file into Calc (eg. CSV), the import
dialog does not steal focus as expected

This only happend when LibO is already open in the background with
another document. As a result, on a busy desktop, the window does not
show up and it can be interpreted as if nothing happened.

Steps to reproduce in Windows Libo 3.5rc2:

1) Open any valid document with LibO, move it to background/non visible
screen (when in multiple screen setup)
2) Create a text file with anything in it
3) While having the explorer on top of all application, "Open With.."
the newly created file with Calc
4) A window asking questions to finish the import will show up *under*
the current file explorer window

Thanks for any confirmations.

F.

Actually I think I won't install JRE at all, as Base is not a
requirement in this particular installation I am doing.

Regardless, I'd still like to know what's the recommended JRE to install
in a 64-bit Windows environment.

I didn't find a source for your indication that "Only 32-bit JRE works
in LibreOffice for windows". In fact JRE as a requirement for
LibreOffice (Base or else) is not listed at all under the requirements:

"Current" version and "Development" should be the only ones clearly
advertised. Perhaps "older versions" is somtimes useful.

In fact "Development" should not be anywhere near the download page, at
least not after > 1 yr. of releases.

I am certainly not using nor recommending 3.3.4 after all the bug fixes
I find in the later versions. Why would I ?

No, I assumed you meant what you wrote initially. The Op didn't ask the
same question, he most probably sent the same message twice by mistake.

Right, that should've been a hint that it was probably an honest mistake
- which is not uncommon on mailing lists. What if he didn't read the
answers ? They are now there, searchable, available for others.

I am actually surprised mailing lists are found by most users. Bothering
to register here and post if a huge effort for most people I know use
computers, I'd never ask them to do that - much less grab my virtual
baseball bat and hit them when they somehow fail at any implicit rules.

Staying on the subject, the download page is confusing, advertising two
"final" versions, without hinting at the differences.

The varied replies and sources of information indicate this is not
clear, so yes, we can expect this question to come often. That's often a
hint to improve the information available.

I'd rather have frequent repetitive questions than frequent repetitive
failed installs (aka "sorry, not trying that again" users).

Right now I am advising people who ask me to wait for 3.5 which will
most likely incorporate many bug fixes that will improve first-time
users experiences.

rather short.

Is there a specific bug tracker /wiki where I should log any
suggestions/problems ?

Thanks a lot, can't wait to try it!

Hi Olwe,

That's pretty much it. You may also want to
rm -r ~/.libreoffice
(just to make sure every setting is reset)

You can also check this doc:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LibreOffice

Come back if you have any questions.

Hi Alex,

What bugs exactly ? It would be very useful to include references or
details when you make such comments.

Tomorrow is "Ubuntu bug day" for LibO and OOo. I'd welcome any help
reporting/reproducing any LibO bugs in Ubuntu (and vice versa), as well
as "upstream" at Freedesktop.org. If you're talking about packaging
bugs, why, yes, it's not perfect yet. Some bugs are also only now coming
up when people use stuff like Unity.

Hi there - I initially wrote the above documentation. Using the PPA is
only needed for 10.04LTS and 10.10.

It also states:
"A PPA is always considered a third-party application and unfit for
production purposes (as far as official commercial support goes),
however LibreOffice is becoming part of Ubuntu in April 2011, and this
PPA is the source for such official version. Make sure you test this
appropriately if you intend to use this in a production environment
under Ubuntu 10.04 LTS or 10.10. "

> Actually, I found that the OOo web site updated quicker and more often

Of course - LibO has a different release shedule than LibO. Only stable
Ubuntu releases will have any LibO version. The PPA is considered a
development version. When LibO is officially released in Ubuntu (April
this year), there may be a "LibO-stable" PPA and a "LibO-dev" PPA or
else - Mozilla packages are managed in a similar way.

> Yes, it will be much easier to keep up-to-date when LibreOffice is in

Right now there is not an important delay that I can see between the
LibO releases and the PPA. Canonical has assigned staff to it and bugs
are being worked on, assigned, etc. The situation is improving. So in
practical terms, there is no significant "lag" between the PPA and .deb
packages.

 But

It's one of those golden rules in most GNU/Linux distributions. In
Ubuntu it's even more present: USE A PACKAGE MANAGER ANY AND EVERY TIME
YOU CAN. .debs are the last choice.

Even the fact someone would use the PPA is considered by far a more
advanced technical level than just going to the Ubuntu Software Center.

The advantages of having the latest version of LibO right to the minute
compared to the problems and maintenance .debs may generate really
justify using the PPA (for 10.10 and 10.04LTS).

Cheers,

Fabián

Re: [libreoffice-users] Frustrated Base Users / Errors in Base 3.3 (OO 3.2 work beautifully)

2011-02-08 Thread Fabian Rodriguez
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hi Tony,

Thanks for sharing your findings and experience (including your work!).
You're doing an important part of the job to fix such issues: reporting
them and bringing attention to them.

I posted separately about the Ubuntu Bug day coming up, it's a great
opportunity to learn more about the process and get involved. Reporting
bugs upstream is also an important part of that work. Then when
developers get to it, the goal is to have a clear idea of what needs to
be done.

An important next step (after acknowledging such important problems
exist in Base) is to make a list and one by one try to reproduce and
confirm such issues in a consistent manner, then file individual bug
reports for those ASAP. See this post for details on how to join the effort:
http://www.ubuntu-user.com/Online/Blogs/Amber-Graner-You-in-Ubuntu/You-re-Invited-This-Week-s-Ubuntu-Bug-Day-LibreOffice-and-OpenOffice

If we wait for "someone to be available" to work on such issues, when
that day comes such people may just have nothing to do if the list is
empty ;)

Cheers,

Fabián

Fellow Ubuntu Triagers!

This week's Bug Day targets are *drum roll please* LibreOffice and
OpenOffice!
 * #100 New bugs need a hug
 * #43 Incomplete bugs need a status check
 * #88 Confirmed bugs need a review

OpenOffice and LibreOffice are free office suites. OpenOffice has been
the default office suite for a long time ago, and has more than 1000
open bugs, some of them old, others new, and all of these need
triaging. In the meantime, Ubuntu is transitioning to LibreOffice, and
bugs that exist in LibreOffice too should be marked as such, to help
the developers find the bugs they can focus on.

Bookmark it, add it to your calendars, turn over those egg-timers!

Are you looking for a way to start giving some love back to your
adorable Ubuntu Project?
Did you ever wonder what Triage is? Want to learn about that?
This is a perfect time!, Everybody can help in a Bug Day!

Hi Rodolfo,

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I would suggest you file a bug report for this, please follow these
guidelines:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport#Reporting_Ubuntu_bugs

You will be able to attach your file(s) there, which did not make it to
the list. Make sure they have no personal / private information and
include as much detail as possible, including how you install LibO in
Ubuntu (using the PPA is preferred).

If other users near you have similar problems you can ask in your
language using these resources:

Hi Charles,

I believe the appropriate way to submit, track and try solving these
problems would be via a bug report. I can document this specifically for
this kind of problem, let me know what you think. A little hand-holding
goes a long way and pointing directly to this kind of "5 steps to submit
your problematic PPS file" would work towards that.

Let me know.
