Re: [libreoffice-users] Em-dash

2024-07-30 Thread Ian Bertram
I see what you mean. I probably didn't look closely enough at your examples.
Rightly or wrongly however, I always have the en-dash with spaces fore and aft,
and never use the em-dash. To be honest, until relatively recently I just used
a hyphen anyway. I suppose that comes from having used a typewriter for years
before WP became widely available.

The detail is important:
word1[space][one (or two) hyphen (minus)][space]word2[space]

...the (double) hyphen (minus) is converted into en-dash, whereas:

word1[double hyphen (minus)]word2[space]

...the double hyphen (minus) is converted into em-dash.

Note the difference of space characters.

Using the colon characters, the replacement is performed precisely as
desired, whether there are space characters adjacent to the words or
not.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Em-dash

2024-07-30 Thread Ian Bertram
En- dash/em-dash

All I need to do is type either double hyphen or triple hyphen to get the
appropriate dash. No need for colons etc. I have never changed any autocorrect
settings to achieve this. It is triggered by the second space, whether
immediately after the hyphen or after the next word.

Here is how it works for me.

Alternative A:

1. word1
2. [space]
3. double hyphen (minus)
4. word2
5. [space]

Until step 4 included, there is no auto-correction seen. Once I press
the space bar (i.e. step 5), only then I see the double hyphen (minus)
characters converted into the "en dash" character. Note that this
alternative does not work (for me) if I want "em dash" instead.

Alternative B:

1. word1
2. [space]
3. [colon character]
4. triple hyphen (minus)
5. [colon character]

Immediately after step 5, I see the characters from steps 3 to 5
converted into an "em dash". In step 4, if instead of three hyphen
(minus) characters I only type-in two of them, the resulting character
after step 5 is an "en dash" instead of "em dash".

This is all with the "AutoCorrect > While typing" option enabled, and
without having changed any of the default "Replace" related options.

Ady.

I've had similar issues with user defined labels. Make sure to check the
spacing between labels is correctly set. If it is fractionally out, you

RE: [libreoffice-users] Badly formatted document

2022-07-05 Thread Ian Bertram

I don’t think this is an old version of LO. I suspect it was written in word,
then the pdf produced, then the Open Document version created from the PDF. I
have both the PDF and the ODT versions. There is no HTML version.

I can’t use the PERL script. I don’t know PERL and I suspect by the time I was
confident enough to try I could have cut and pasted everything I need manually!

I put the PDF through an online converter and got a very clean DOCX version, so
that at least is a start. The document uses page styles. What I find confusing
is that the original ODT version has 91 custom page styles for 47 pages. The
DOCX version has only 39 page styles, which still seems a lot. It isn’t
something I use a lot though, so I don’t know if this is normal or an artefact
of the conversion. It doesn’t appear to use footers, but text in a frame fixed
to the bottom by inserting enough line breaks. Again this may be from the
conversion.

To put this in context, this is a policy document from a public body,
originally issued for information in PDF and ODT formats. Both versions use
columns, which makes reading onscreen a bit of a nightmare. It also includes
tables split across columns and also across pages, without repeating headers.
All in all I get the impression that the original document layout is a bit
kludged together. While that may be a feature of the conversion, given the mess
the ODT file is in, I can’t see any benefit from providing it, other than
ticking an accessibility box and if tested would probably fail. I can’t see a
screen reader making much sense of it.

Side topic from my original problem but the UK government guidance on
accessible formats is
here:https://www.gov.uk/guidance/publishing-accessible-documents

A while back the way LO anchored images (and frames) was changed, images
in tables were particularly affected throwing out text
positioning also

and I had to go through all my manuals and change my image anchoring to

[libreoffice-users] Badly formatted document

2022-07-04 Thread Ian Bertram

I have been sent a graphic heavy document in ODT format. However it looks as if
it has been badly converted from a pdf file. The layout is scrambled, headers
don’t align properly and there are a host of other issues. It is also in
columns. Is there a simple way to strip out everything bar the words? I have
tried saving it as a txt file, but this loses a lot of the paragraph numbering
and introduces other layout issues. Saving in rtf format is even worse.

The best I have managed so far has been by converting all the text to a single
style and removing the columns. All the graphics however overlap text and it is
often very difficult to find the anchor point.

[libreoffice-users] Starting page numbering in a document on the second page

2022-06-25 Thread Ian Bertram

I have a long document (156 pages) plus a cover page. I want the cover page to
be unnumbered and the numbering to start with the second page of the document.
I’ve tried using page styles and got the second page to show as 1, but the
header also appeared on the cover page and also as Page 1. Removing the cover
page header removes it from the whole document. Is what I’m trying to do
possible? I feel as if I’m frustratingly close, but obviously missing something.

RE: [libreoffice-users] changing currency in a spreadsheet

2022-04-25 Thread Ian Bertram

How are the cells displaying the $ sign formatted? I’m guessing they use the
currency format. There’s probably a way to automatically select currency cells
and change the currency, but that’s outside my expertise. Failing that you
could simply edit the $ settings to use the £ symbol in the correct place with
the appropriate comma and decimal point settings. That’s a bit clunky though.

If by any chance they are not formatted as currency, but something else, you
can probably edit that setting to switch the currency symbols. That seems
unlikely though since you say this is a financial spreadsheet.

I don't think that does what I want. I would have to select
every cell

that has a $ amount, and no other cells, and apply the £ currency. But

that also might change the other format aspects - commas and number of

figures after the decimal point and so forth.

What I'm looking for is something that I can apply to the whole sheet,

[libreoffice-users] Keeping track of word counts

2021-10-12 Thread Ian Bertram

I usually have several writing projects on the go and need to keep track of
progress. At the moment I have a simple spreadsheet that I update from time to
time with wordcounts from the documents I’m working on. It occurs to me however
that somewhere in Writer there must be a function that calculates word count in
order to display it in the footer display. Is it possible to access that
function via Calc and keep it automatically updated?

I’m using Windows 10.

too quickly, ie before all the images have time to load. They usually reappear
next time, but not always.

15:03=To:users@global.libreoffice.orgSubject:[libreoffice-users] Images
silently disappears from write document

Hi,

I have a large document with lots of images.

All image files are stored on disk externally from the document, in a

directory just beside the odt file. I use relative links to them from the

odt file (inserting them as link).

Now and then, *a large amount of images suddenly disappears from the odt*

as if they never were inserted into the document. I see this fault first

after having closed and reopened the document. I have lost about 100 images

each time...

The image file itself is intact, nothing wrong with it. I can insert it

again.

I have never *seen* that an image gets missing when I just do save, but

since close and open does not update the file(?), the bug seem to occur=in

the backgroundduring save. After save, the images are still there in the

opened document and I can continue adding more.

The image count in *Files-Properties-Statistics* still show the correct

old number as it should be when I open a faulty odt, but I am uncertain how

this count is kept, whether it actually counts the image tags. It's
behaviour is strange. What does the reset button do? When fiddling around

with reset, OK and other stuff I suddenly see a lower image count here

which probably reflects the true amount. I have monitored this count in

order to detect when images disappear, but obviously that count was a false

indication. I suspect the fault occur at save, but I don't *see* the fault

until I close and reopen the document?

The missing images are not part of the *Edit-Links to external files*...

And they are not part of the *Images* list in the *Navigator*.

If I open the xml file inside the odt, there is no trace of the image at

the place where it should be located.

So, the image is truly gone from the xml code.

One interesting observation is that images of type *.svg* seem to create a

png copy inside LO, which is stored in the Pictures directory of the odt. I

have noticed that LO sometimes fails to write all of them. Some may be
missing, but after opening the document and saving it again, they reappear

(not 100.0% sure about this).

I'm using the latest stable version 6.4.x of libreoffice.

I first saw this problem in September. Not sure for how long it has been
there.

The document has about 1400 pages with about 1800 images. I *am* aware of

its size...

It has an old history, starting in the old version of Google Docs, to

openoffice and then to libreoffice writer. I wonder if there is a way to

cleanthe xml file?

To my question, is this a known problem? Is redmine the place to report it?

A more pressing question is *how I can monitor this bug. How do a get a

true count of images* in the document that I can use regularly to monitor

this? I cannot get a grip on the behaviour of the statistics page. Do I

need to write a macro, or a python script that reads the odt?

I can try 1000 things to isolate this bug, but I stop here in case someone

can point me in a good direction.

p;

Thanks

Bo

RE: [libreoffice-users] Static vs. dynamic time

2020-10-03 Thread Ian Bertram

Beyond my limited skills but presumably it is possible to run a macro from a
spread sheet formula. Assuming that to be true then in col B you want something
that in process terms works  like “if col A is not blank then run macro
‘InsertFixedDate’ “ which would be triggered when you enter data on col A.

There is an option that I have found accidentally: If you want to enter

the present time as static, use InsertTimeor Ctrl+Shift+;

But if you want to enter the present time as dynamic use =NOW().

Closest I've found is Ctrl + ; that inserts current date

and Ctrl + Shift + ; that inserts the current time.

Both seem to be the fixed value?

But have found no way to do that in a formula??

Recall long ago in either Lotus or Quattro, you could use now() and then

{Calc} and it would convert the current time to the fixed value. But that
was long long ago. Macro recorder doesn't seem to record
that kind of

stuff, and entering formulas don't either.

When I have needed a static date or time in Libreoffice Calc, I have found

that the only way to do this is to enter the date or time directly into the

spreadsheet and not to use a formula.

As an example of this, I have been using Calc to measure the drift of

t;timepieces compared to a time standard at weekly intervals over a 26 week

period.  I pre-enter the dates at which the measurements are to be made.

At the required date, I simply enter the time as shown on the timepiece and

the time as shown on the time standard at the same instance.  These times

are then converted to seconds and the difference between in seconds is then
calculated and charted to show the time drift.  These times and dates are

static and can be used for later referral.

I am not sure if there is a way to use a formula or macro to enter a static

; date.  If there is, it is beyond my capabilities.  Entering dates and times

directly seems very straightforward to me.

Hi,

I use the formula IF(A1t;;NOW()) copied to every cell of column B.

It gives me the correct time every time I type anything on a line of column

I

typed something in column A.

I tried looking for a static version of NOW() or playing with iterations

(probably not correctly) or looking for a way to stop recomputing this

t;specific column to no avail.

; Is there a way to set on column B the time of the typing on each line of
column A and keep it as a static time.

I am usually good with formulas, but this very basic need escapes me.

As far as usability is concerned, a STATICNOW() function seems much more

=useful than the current NOW() function. Or inserting a 0,1 argument for

staticness or something.

So far, I am forced to type or insert the time manually each time.

Let me repeat it: Manually each time! Me!  ;)

Thanks,

Chimel.
