I'm getting a bit annoyed at having my address book split between Personal

Can someone tell me the sequence/commands to combine the disparate

At some stage I'll also need to bring over an Evolution address list - big

Re: [libreoffice-users] Libreoffice 4 corrupting Calc files

2014-03-03 Thread Scott Castaline
I'm sort of having a similar problem. I too have a spreadsheet file for
personal finances tracking. When I made the change from Fedora 19 to
Fedora 20 I suddenly started getting the file recovery dialog reporting
that my budget calc file needed to be recovered when I would open a 2nd
unrelated Libreoffice file. It does not matter whether I am opening an
existing or new calc, write, draw or base file. The dialog would pop up
pointing to the one file, even though I already had it open and had been
using it. Of course if I elect to recover it'll fail since it is already
open and the recovery encountered the file lock. I did one time open
another file first and then attempted to open the file that gets
flagged. This time I was able to allow the recovery process to run and
it opened. I have gone a few days with no further problems until just
now, the dialog suddenly popped up upon opening another file.

I have already tried removing the .config directory tree for LibreOffice
with only a few days reprieve from this problem. I am currently running
4.2.1.1 from the Fedora 20 repo. Just my .02¢, it seems to be a similar
problem to the OP.

Hello,

I'm new to the list, so if this is an inappropriate subject, please let me

I am using Libreoffice on Manjaro Linux. Over the last several months the

"Version: 4.1.5.3
Build ID: 4.1.5.3 Arch Linux build-1". I have been using Manjaro for about
six months. Over this time I have been using Libreoffice to update some
Calc spreadsheets that I created to keep track of my finances. There is
only one of those files that occasionally gets corrupted. It's always the
same file, and only this one file that gets corrupted. I keep the files on
a USB drive. I always save the file, close Libreoffice, and unmount the
drive before removing it from the computer. I have no forewarning that the
file is corrupt until the next time I open it. When I open the file when
its corrupted, I get this window:
Screenshot<

. Nothing I try can get Libreoffice to open or repair the file.
But
, if
I open the file with Libreoffice 3 on my Debian system, I am offered a
window that asks me if I want Libreoffice to repair the file. If I click on
'Yes' Libreoffice 3 completes the repair and I see the spreadsheet. The
only strange thing that I notice about the repaired file is that the last
chart I had created is only a placeholder. I then delete the placeholder
and recreate the chart. If I then save an
d close the file, and reopen it in Libreoffice 4, it opens fine until the
next time it gets corrupted. I don't know how to cause the problem, other
that to keep opening the file until it happens.

Has anyone seen this problem? Is there anything I should try?

I have seen a problem that seems to be similar, but that was an earlier
version of LibreOffice, I think 3.7.something. It corrupted a spreadsheet
for me and I couldn't repair it with LibreOffice, so I installed Apache
OpenOffice and opened it. Apache OpenOffice repaired the file for me and I
have been using it ever since, and since then the spreadsheet never got
corrupted again.

That's probably not the solution you are looking for, I just wanted to say
that you are probably not the only one who had this problem, but I'm not
100% sure it's the same bug.

Re: [libreoffice-users] User Profile Question

2014-03-01 Thread Scott Castaline
I run on Linux so I'm not sure if you have it on Win7. There's a file
called registrymodifications.xcu under libreoffice/4/user.
It's in some Markup format somewhat similar to html or xml. It can be
kind of cryptic but I have edited that file directly with some success.
I don't know if that contains everything within user options or not, but
I have saved it in the past before trying something that would cause the
app to barf and then restored that file and everything was fine again.

My computer recently crashed resulting in a corrupt User Profile. I was able to

From your description, it sounds like you have not set the correct bound
field in the properties of your Combobox on your main form.

Enter Design mode for your main form, and then select the control you
want to edit, or if you have both a control and associated label, enter
the group first (right mouse button click on the control in question >
Edit/Enter group). From here, you need to make sure that your box is
bound to the right data source in the Data tab, and the correct field,
or alternatively, make the population of that field dependent on a SQL
statement that basically just says "SELECT * FROM
fieldusedtopopulateform". Save the form, leave edit mode and see if it
now works.

Alex

Alex,

I went back into the design mode and found that I hadn't completely
setup the data page in the field control settings. Once I did that when
I clicked on the arrow a drop down box appeared with 5 lines from the
corresponding table. I assumed it was working fine, so I proceeded to do
the same with 2 other fields. I created the tables for them, initially
populated them with data, setup the relations with the main table. Again
all seemed to be working fine. I was able to either click the arrow for
the drop down to list the different values or start typing in the value
and it would attempt to complete based on what was in the corresponding
table and what I had typed so far.

This afternoon I went back into the db and the main table's form when I
noticed that the fields involved were displaying what I had entered for
the last record created/edited. If I changed it to correct it I found
that for all records that field remained the same. Since so far I've
only been entering info from CDs and have not started with any vinyl yet
so that field would be the same as well as the genre since I've also
been entering in from a collection of the same genre, but the field in
question is the one that tracks where I purchased the media from. That
field is the one that is supposed to change for at least 2 of the 20 CDs
I've entered so far. That was how I noticed that something was wrong.
I've also noticed that when I go into Edit mode of the form some fields
will display data as though I'm in data entry mode and not design mode.
I don't know if this is related or something else happening.

I've tried several different combinations of settings for these fields
whit no resolve of problem. On the data page of the field control I
have; for Data Fields I have it pointing to the field that has the data
I'm using to fill in the main table. for the next 2 settings I have left
on default "yes", the type of list contents = Table and List content =
name of table that I'm linked to. It seems to me that somehow the
relations aren't working the way I want them to. It's applying the same
record(s) from the linked table(s) to all records in the main table.

I have the same type of field settings for the primary keys as I do for
the main table calling it the table name_ID set as an integer with
AutoValue set. I then added on reference of these fields as foreign keys
in the main table. The relations were set using the GUI by clicking on
the the corresponding fields with the 1 end to the list tables and the N
end to the foreign key field in the main table. Maybe it should be the
other way or many to many, but I don't see how to do that. It seems that
the GUI automatically sets the relation as 1 to N and the directions as
well.

Again thanks.

If you want to use SQL DDL through LO's UI, Options > SQL (or Tools> SQL
on the Mac) from the main menu is your friend, although the feedback is
minimal (i.e. you get a message that the statement has executed
correctly or not).

Other than that, if you are trying to set it up so that your
Album.AlbumID is referenced in the Track.AlbumID, then the way it should
work in the GUI is via Tools > Relations in the LO Base file main
window, adding the tables you want to join, setting the relation as
1-to-n by dragging the field AlbumID field from your Album table to your
corresponding Track.AlbumID field in the Album table and then setting
the UPDATE/CASCADE/DELTE options as appropriate.

If this doesn't work after saving the database, then that would probably
be a bug.

Alex

Thanks for the info Jay & Alex. I later went and recreated the db
inputting SQL myself and it worked. I then repeated it using the GUI and
found my error. I would create the relation by click and drag between
tables. Then for some reason I was clicking on the toolbar icon for
creating a new relation instead of right clicking on the line to edit
the one already created. So I was actually creating duplicate relations.
It's working now. I found that I do recall quite a bit of SQL as I also
duplicated the full db in SQLite using just SQL, just lack the
programming skills to create the UI, and entering the info by SQL
statements for each record is a real PITA.

I do have one more question though. I decided to add another table that
would allow me to select existing data from this table to fill in a
field in the main table. I created the new table with 2 fields. First
field is an integer that is auto entered (essentially record count) and
the second field is a text field. I then added a field in the main table
that provides the link to this new table. In the form I changed the
field type from Text Box to Combo Box (originally used List Box, but it
didn't work). When I change to entry mode and enter a new record, when I
get to this field and I click on the Drop Arrow a blank box is
displayed. I am able to manually enter the correct data myself. I do
have the new table populated with data.
What am I not doing? I'm thinking of changing one other field this way
and was doing this one to figure out doing it.

Within the GUI the steps you describe is exactly the way I had done it.
When it didn't work, I was trying several different ways, unfortunately
I didn't track what I had changed in all my attempts so I don't remember

happening.

 Thanks for the feed back.

Scott

Summarizing your two tables:

Album Table
AlbumID - int, primary key
Album
Artist
other Album only data

Track Table
TrackID - int, primary key
AlbumID - foreign key, references row in Album Table
TrackNumber
other Track only data

What you are doing with the graphical tool is set the foreign key
constraint for Track.AlbumID to be the values in Album.AlbumID. The idea
is to limit the valid values to Track.AlbumID to only those in
Album.AlbumID. This is not absolutely needed but can be very convenient
when entering data (152 is a valid AlbumID in Album but 512 is not).

When you query for all tracks for an arbitrary artist using vanilla SQL:

SELECT (each column must be only occur in one table)
FROMAlbum as a, Track as t (use the correct table names)
WHERE a.Artist = 'some artist'
 AND a.AlbumID = t.AlbumID

In the FROM clause I used aliasing (AS a, AS t) to provide a short
reference to each table.

The SELECT clause must use aliasing (or full referencing) when needed to
make a column unique.

In the WHERE clause aliasing was used to make the references
unambiguous. Also, AlbumID occurs in both tables so aliasing (or full
table referencing) must be used so the query looks for AlbumIDs that
match in each table. Artist probably only exists in Album so alaising or
referencing is optional.

The above query does not require the foreign key constraint be set in
the Track table.

Jay,

So how would I do that in the graphical tool? I can't seem to get it to
work. I vaguely remember working with foreign keys and the sql statement
would refer to AlbumID from the parent as Album.AlbumID for both tables.

I wound up blowing off my original form and recreated it. The Automatic
Control Focus function then behaved the way it should leaving the form
navigation controls active. So I may have accidentlly changed something
to cause my problem. For some reason Activation Order does not fix the
starting position for me. The cursor still starts in the upper left

field it works fine after that, so using both functions seems to make
the form work the way it should.

Scott,
I am using LO 3.6.7.2 under Slackware Linux, not 4.x, but it looks
like the "Automatic Control Focus" icon is alternate-action. If you
go back into form edit mode, click on the icon and see if it turns off
(no border around it).

I do not use that feature. I use the "Activation Order" feature to
order the controls in my forms. In my 3.x, this icon is two to the
left of the "Automatic Control Focus" icon. It contains a checkbox
and a radio button (bulls-eye). Clicking on this icon should get you
a "Tab Order" window that allows you to edit the activation order of
your form's controls by selecting the control from the list on the
left and moving it up or down in the list with the buttons on the
right. I usually select the "Automatic Sort" first and then go back
and refine the order with the up and down buttons.

In addition, if there are any controls you do not want to tab to, such
as a read-only control, the tab can be disabled on a
control-by-control basis by the "Tabstop" option under the "General"
tab in the control's properties dialog.

Hope this helps.

Did you notice that "e" that wound up on the next line? You may have to
add it to the URL.

Re: [libreoffice-users] FYI - Trend Micro is blocking your LO 4.1.1 download page

2013-09-03 Thread Scott Castaline
As of today Sept. 3, 2013 the below mentioned site reports that
libreoffice's download site is Safe and The latest tests indicate that
this URL contains no malicious software and shows no signs of phishing.

So it seems that someone got through and resolved the issue. Of course
this assumes that your system does not come into play on this as I'm
running Linux (Fedora 19) using FF 23.0.1 and not MS Windows.

If you go to the Trend Micro site safety center (

Just thought I'd pass this info along.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Unable to change url for persona settings

2013-07-24 Thread Scott Castaline
Peter, looks good. That is essentially what I wound up doing in
experimenting with it. I have not tried creating my own personas as I'm
artistically dysfunctional, in otherwards I am not very creative
artistically. For now, when I want to change my persona I just first
change my firefox/thunderbid personas. I'll copy the URL and then I go
to LO 4.0 change it there and copy the from the PersonaSettings
line in registrymodifications.xcu as well as the jpg files in the
.config/libreoffice/4/user/gallery/persona folder over to my system
running Fedora 19/LO 4.1. Hopefully this bug gets fixed fairly soon as I
really do like this feature as frivolous as it may be.:-)

Tom, there's already 2 bug reports open on this as mentioned by Peter in

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Unable to change url for persona settings

2013-07-23 Thread Scott Castaline
Yes 4.1.?.? the persona feature is broke. You can only change it or edit
it by doing it manually by adding the jpg files to the
.config/libreoffice/4/user/gallery/persona sub-dirs. If the persona
sub-dir does not exist than just create it and dump the jpg there. Also
you will have to manually edit the registrymodifications.xcu file. This
just an xml file. Look for the 2 lines that have "Persona" and the
second one has "PersonaSettings" after oor:name=. You will want the 2nd
line, horizontal scroll to the type and type in the name of the
jpg file (ie 3.jpg;bas5.jpg;#d5f3fa;#00 is what is in mine for star
trek image.)

I got the mentioned values when I tried coping my libreoffic config
folders from 4.0.4.2 into my 4.1.?.? folders and found that it worked. I
found the difference based on the comments in the 2 bugs that Peter had
mentioned. Once I changed the new files I switched back. The xcu files
are very different in size so I'm not sure if keeping the older version
in place may disallow some new feature from working properly.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Unable to change url for persona settings

2013-07-23 Thread Scott Castaline
So I took it a step further and manually added the persona sub-dir
under the gallery sub-dir along with the jpg files within the folder.
I then manually edited the registrymodifications.xcu file (xml file
type) and just copied text within in "PersonaSettings"
line from the working file to the broken 4.1.?.? version of the file.
I'm not sure what other changes there are between the 2 so I just
edited the broken one. I am still not able to change from the dialog.
It still will not allow the editing of the url within the box.

Yes, that's exactly what I experienced. For now I have the .config
sub-dirs from my system running Fedora 18 and LO 4.0.4.2 copied onto
the system running Fedora 19 and LO 4.1.?.?. Since I saved my original

[libreoffice-users] Unable to change url for persona settings

2013-07-20 Thread Scott Castaline
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Just recently started checking out Fedora 19 on another system. This
version comes with LibreOffice 4.1. I found that I was not able to
setup my Persona settings in this version. My main system has 4.0.4.2
and just on a hunch I copied the libreoffice sub-dir in .config to my
test system after renaming it on that system. It now works, although I
haven't tried changing it now that I think of it since doing that.

Anyone know enough about the config db or file to shed some light on
why this happened. Also is there any major difference between config
tool in 4.0 verses 4.1 that could create problems? Or is it possible
to be a Fedora thing and not generic LibreOffice problem?

On Thunderbird (at least on Linux, can't speak for other platforms),
If the list requires it you have 2 different reply options. One that
replies to the originator of the particular message and the other has
a drop down that gives options of "Reply List", "Reply All", just
"Reply". I beleive that the "Reply All" will have the below mentioned
behavior of sending to the list plus to the originator. On mine I have
"Reply List" so it will not send a second copy to the originator. Also
on other lists I only one of the 2 buttons available, only this and a
couple of others are they both there. I believe that it's something
that gets embedded into the email header by the email server running
the particular list(s).

[libreoffice-users] LO 4.0.1 error "no suitable windowing system found, exiting."

Just installed Fedora 18 and tried to install LO 4.0.1. When I try to
start LO I get the following error, no suitable windowing system
found, exiting. Google only shows some really old complaints of this
dating back to 2009. None of the fixes apply to these versions (Fedora
or LO). I can run the version from Fedora's repo which is 3.6.x, but I
want to get 4.x.x running I was able to run it on my Fedora 17 system,
anyone have any other ideas that I could try?

it comes across a little weird. I did find the link to the specific
persona/theme if you want to check it out:

Hmm, I thought it was something in the original "skin" I've seen it
referenced that determined the text color. I use the same persona for
Firefox, Thunderbird and LO 4.0. In Firefox and Thunderbird the text
in question is white, but in LO it's black. Just for your info, its
Star Trek by lolodetahiti.

When you say White text are you referring to the menu bar text? If so,
how do you get it to display in white? I'm using a persona from
Firefox and I have click on a spot where I think the correct menu is
to get the drop down. In Firefox and Thunderbird all of the text in
the menu bar is white so the black background doesn't hide, but in
Libre the text remains in black, so the text is lost in the background.

I see I'm not the only one playing around with that in 4.0. I thought
it was pretty neat, I now have StarTrekXI personas on FF, T'Bird and LO.
The only drawback is the menu bar text is black so if the persona has
black in that area the text disappears.

Just to mention, the keys that are annotated as "dead keys" actually
do work but you have to hit the space bar after entering the
particular key. ie to type ~ which is a "dead key" I strike the key as
normal followed by the space bar and the character will be entered. At
least that is what I found with my system.

Assuming (as much as I hate to use that word) he is using the package
manger in Fedora then it should install the correct arch which is
determined by the arch of the OS. That would also be version 3.4.4 as
that is what is in the Fedora repos.

Clinton, does this happen when you first launch a LO app from you menu
or icon? I presume that the error is in a dialogue box as well?
You may want to open a terminal and enter the appropriate command for
the app you want to launch and see what gets outputted to the terminal
prior to this message.

It's not there. I can remember it being there in older versions, but for
some reason not this one. I have gone through each section under

Ah. It's a distro issue. I just brought up Linux Mint 12 LO 3.4.4 and
the option is missing there as well. Fired up Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty) and
the option is there with LO 3.3.4 (distro version). I reckon that the
distro packagers are trying to dumb down everything... including LO.
File an LO bug in both Fedora and LO.

Note: installing directly from LO (3.3.4 or 3.4.x) has the option, so
it's definately a distro packaging issue.

[TAG] LibreOffice linux distribution versions missing
'Tools|Options|General|Open/Save dialogs' option.

Yep, that's what I was beginning to think. I don't know why unless they
want LO to maintain its own environment? Not sure if that is phrased
correctly. Or maybe something has changed in the way LO requests that
dialogue and the way the system responds to the request. I wonder if
completing the change over to systemd has anything to do with it. If
someone has Fedora 15 that was the last version before everything was
cut over to systemd.

Based on that I am planning on filing a bug report with Fedora for
removing that option and with LO for not allowing the ability to do from
their own dialogue. Would you mind replying with a link for doing the LO
bug report?

In your file browser (Dolphin, etc) under View select Show Hidden FIles

I have it set to Show Hidden Files in both Konqueror and PCManFM. Yes I
use Konqueror as a File Manager as it's more flexible than PCManFM the

Re: [libreoffice-users] Personal settings causing calc to crash

2011-11-22 Thread Scott Castaline
I just realized that on Fedora 16 at least with the LXDE DE the
.libreoffice folder is kept under the .config folder in the users home
folder. It used to be directly in the home folder. Anyway I did get it
to crash again when closing this one and only one spreadsheet. Through
several trial and error delete and restore of different folders/files I
had found the culprit, which makes it even more confusing to me.

I keep a copy of my wife's expense report template from her job in the
template folder (/home/me/.config/.libreoffice/3/user/template) that is
a MS Excel template format. When I deleted the file it stopped crashing,
but restoring the file the crashing starts again. Now opening this file,
which I have a desktop icon that launches it for me, and then closing it
does not cause a crash, but opening my budget spreadsheet in ods and
then closing it will cause a crash. Again delte the xlt file and no more
crashing. What gives?

don't know what it is about this file that is causing this to happen.
I have even copied back in a version of the file before all of this
started and that will cause the app to crash as well.

Any suggestions?

My guess would be it's an extension. So i would start by copying the
~/.libreoffice/3/user/extensions
folder across and see if that crashed LO when you re-open it. There
are 16 items in the

~/.libreoffice/3/user
folder so i would move half, 8. Test. Then move a remaining half,
4 ... and so on until LO crashes and then delete the half you just
added and add half that back in. By doing half each time you can
narrow it down quite quickly.

It is probably obvious to you but a lot of people would do this 1
file in 1 sub-folder at a time and perhaps draw-up a tick list on
paper. [big yawn]

It's unlikely to be the change of DE. Apparently

the config folder / user-profile can be copied from Windows

Have you been able to try copying chunks from your old

KDE user-profile into the newer profile to regain extensions
and things? Ahah, maybe an extension is getting
confused. Most of the sub-folders from your old KDE
profile should copy across fine.

.libreoffice folder from a backup of my Fedora 15

it down to

one specific spreadsheet that would consistently

crash

("Process

started

after I had done the restore of .libreoffice

folder. I

renamed this folder so that the program would then

recreate

the default settings and the crashing has stopped.

I could

just leave it as is and continue from there, but I

was

curious as to what could have been the actual

culprit. My

backed up Fedora 15 system was using KDE for the

DE, could

the change from KDE to xfce have had a negative

impact on

just this one spreadsheet?

registry will cause the app to crash upon closing this one file. I
don't know what it is about this file that is causing this to happen.
I have even copied back in a version of the file before all of this
started and that will cause the app to crash as well.

Any suggestions?

My guess would be it's an extension. So i would start by copying the
~/.libreoffice/3/user/extensions
folder across and see if that crashed LO when you re-open it. There
are 16 items in the

~/.libreoffice/3/user
folder so i would move half, 8. Test. Then move a remaining half, 4
... and so on until LO crashes and then delete the half you just
added and add half that back in. By doing half each time you can
narrow it down quite quickly.

It is probably obvious to you but a lot of people would do this 1
file in 1 sub-folder at a time and perhaps draw-up a tick list on
paper. [big yawn]

Have you been able to try copying chunks from your old

But it still does not work.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: [libreoffice-marketing] MS plans to force OEMs to add boot feature that blocks use of Linux and free software.

If Microsoft gets away with this, then no computer that has a Windows 8
logo on it will not be able to boot from free OSs like Linux. This will be
part of the BIOS. You might not be able to run free software like
LibreOffice, if it goes to the extreme end.

I should think that is illegal under competition law.

To me, if MS get away with forcing OEMs to make it so their systems cannot

run Linux, then it is another anti-trust violation for MS. Billy boy is
going back to court about unfair practices from the 90's, so if people do
not step up now to convince OEMs that we will not buy their products if they
implement the free OS and software blocker at the BOOT LEVEL, then we cannot
buy any new computers for Linux.

We can buy new computers, just not those that come with Windows. Might even
be an advantage since there will be a niche market in supplying hardware
that is not restricted in that way. I might start a new business :-)

Above link is broken, but the problem is that, how many OEM's will deem
it profitable to manufacture 2 different versions of their systems. That
also eliminates dual booting M$ and OpenSource OSes on the same PC. This
will also impact the MoBos manufacturers as they already make 2 versions
of their product to support Intel and AMD now it'll have to be 4
versions. I don't think that'll happen. It's more likely, if M$ gets
their way, one will have to some how hack the boards which will more
than likely nullify any warranties which will then send OpenSource back
to just hobbyists and such and non acceptance by others.

Free Software Foundation urges OEMs to say no to mandatory Windows 8 UEFI

Anyone know of a way to adjust the font size for sheet names. My tabs
are so small that I can't see the text in them.

TIA

Ron, you may want to check your system clock as this post showed up with
yesterday's time stamp as a new post today.

What is the status of this issue? I have the same problem. I have both OOo&
LO installed but cannot install the desktop-environment rpm for redhat-menu.
What is the commands to launch each app, so for now I could manually create
menu entrees?

The usual way is using

swriter
scalc
simpress

and so on to start the individual modules. But since you have both OOo and LibO
installed, you might want to call the app with the complete path to make sure,
that the correct one starts. Once you've done this, you could create some
aliases like owriter and lwriter to be able to differentiate between the two
software packages.

Sigrid.

I did finally get it to install using rpm -ivh --force rpm-file-name. I
saw this in another thread basically complaining about the same thing. I
was not able to find an equivalent in yum as I prefer to use that.
Thanks for the response. I did finally figure out the commands just the
way you give them. Pretty neat how LO was able to duplicate my settings
from OOo as well as my templates, so everything is there and functioning
as before with OOo.
