Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: About.com Readers' Choice Awards 2013 for Office Software

2013-03-09 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I suspect that the 55% for AOO in business is due to LibreOffice voters not
finding an option to vote for Libreoffice.

In such cases the votes seem to be split between Google-docs and AOO because
they are the 2 suite that are most similar to LibreOffice.  Likewise where
AOO is not listed i suspect their voters are torn between voting for
Google-docs or LibreOffice.

When i first voted i was determined to vote everyday but then forgot after the
2nd day.  I suspect that AOO is more dedicated to voting because of the early
massive lead LibreOffice had.

In my opinion LibreOffice and AOO should be offered as 1 single choice because
the products are so similar.  We don't see the MS Office vote split between the
various different bundles or different versions.  It would be interesting to
see how many in the Academics Section just carried on using whatever came with
the machine rather than deliberately going out and getting the Student
Edition of MSO.

Machines seldom come with LibreOffice/AOO preinstalled so votes for them are
from people that have found good reason NOT to stick with whatever they already
had on their machine.  Votes for MSO are often a vote to just a vote for
inability, apathy, ignorance or even fear of their machine.  MSO 'should' be
winning in the votes because of the percentages of people using it and their
resistance to change.  The fact it isn't points more to apathy of MS users.

Tom :)

Hi :)
Do!  My example of the Academic Section was a tad flawed!  lol.  They do
actually have 2 of the bundles for students and academics, they just don't have
the 'normal' bundle for a comparison.  So, it's still not a fair vote but
somehow LibreOffice is streaking ahead despite that.

From the methodological point of view, this poll is meaningless anyway. Sample

Also, I still think that absence of Apache OpenOffice in some online poll is

AOO is not on the list for Macs, so the 74% figure is meaningless. You

As far as I believe that AOO and LO should not compete against each other, but
try to take some users away from Microsoft Office instead, I also understand
Marc -- this is *LibreOffice* mailing list. It is natural that he points out
absence of LibreOffice, while absence of Apache OpenOffice is irrelevant at the
moment.

The absence of Apache OpenOffice is not irrelevant. It make the poll meaningless. LibreOffice
is not actually used by 74% of the Mac users taking the survey when you have left out Apache
OpenOffice from the survey, as well as Nissus, Scrivener, and others.

It is like conducting a survey about the favourite cola drink and leaving
Coca-Cola off the list.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: About.com Readers' Choice Awards 2013 for Office Software

2013-03-03 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
My guess is that people wanting to vote for AOO or OOo just vote for LO because
they are about the same really.

However, the reason AOO is missing is that Mac users didn't propose it or
register it for the poll.  Perhaps they see AOO as being too old now or
unfashionable or perhaps they just decided that LibreOffice was close enough.
Regards from
Tom :)
