I suddenly started getting reports from some of my LO 3.6 users that
Windows Explorer randomly crashed when they went to open an ODF file and
my own tests confirmed this to be true for all Windows versions from XP

I think I am experiencing something related to this bug:
https://www.libreoffice.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=53534 but before I
start escalating this report, or opening a new one, I would like to get
feedback on other users experience of this issue.

If you have LO 3.6.0 or 3.6.1 installed, open Windows Explorer and
browse for any ODF file, hover the cursor over the file and wait for the
tool/file tip to appear, this is when Windows Explorer might crash. I
say might, because it does not occur on all ODF file types, Base
.odb files seem to generate the crash more frequently than others. If
you can capture the crash report, it will clearly show that the culprit
is either:
C:\Program Files\LibreOffice 3.6\program\shlxthdl\shlxthdl.dll
or
C:\Program Files (x86)\LibreOffice 3.6\program\shlxthdl\shlxthdl_x64.dll

Apologies for cross posting, but I think this is a critical issue,
because we do not want LO to get the reputation of an application that
kills core OS services.

Sounds like time to file a Bug Report!

RE: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Kills Windows Explorer

2012-08-19 Thread V Stuart Foote
Dave,

Already tracked in Bugzilla. The LibreOffice shell extension is being patched
for 3.6.1 release.

Bug #52078 ( https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52078
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52078 ) has been closed
resolved for 3.6.1 release. It was in the most annoying bugs
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6

But two new related active bugs have been spun off. fdo#53533 (
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53533
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53533 ) and fdo#53534 (
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53534
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53534 ).

The fdo#53533 is to handle malformed or misnamed ODF files--which cause the
LibreOffice shell extension to crash the Windows Explorer shell. While
fdo#53534 enhances the LibreOffice Windows shell extension to handle flat file
ODF content.

Meanwhile, the Windows shell extension is an optional component at
installation--could exclude it. Or just advise users of issue of pointing to
ODF documents in Windows Explorer causing Explorer to crash, and not to do it.
Open from within LO application.

Stuart
