Yes, and I can use spread sheets with the same column headings. Libre Office did not just let me merge the template I used in MS Word using the same date sheet in either a .doc file or an .xls file. You're presumably talking about mailmerging? What (type of file) are you merging into your doc file? Tentatively, you should just be able to change the fields in your doc file so that LO recognises them as mailmerge fields (I don't think it'll automatically recognise them). This does depend on the details of how you're doing what you're doing though.
