Fedora 13 installation
Hello, I had tried to install Fedora 13 on Lenovo N500 latpop and when I try to boot it starts, the fedora logo appears, some services (like udev) are started, and then it hangs; I tried it three times. I added to the kernel boot parameters "noprobe noapic noapci" but it did not help. This laptop ran Fedora 10 before. What do you suggest me to do ? \ rgs, Mark -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines

And I can't find what to change, install or update so that Fedora Ant works with Sun JDK 1.5.0. Curious, if I use gij and gcj (which are java 5) and works fine. Managing debuginfo repos and packages
Hi, I recently installed debuginfo packages for glibc and gcc with debuginfo-install. It pulled in yum-plugin-auto-update-debug-info. This enables the debuginfo repos for _all_ repos. And now every time I use a yum command, it spits out messages like this, > Found 2 installed debuginfo package(s) > Enabling fedora-debuginfo: Fedora 13 - x86_64 - Debug > Reading repository metadata in from local files > Enabling rpmfusion-nonfree-debuginfo: RPM Fusion for Fedora 13 - Nonfree - > Debug > Reading repository metadata in from local files > Enabling livna-debuginfo: rpm.livna.org for 13 - x86_64 - Debug > Reading repository metadata in from local files > Enabling rpmfusion-free-updates-debuginfo: RPM Fusion for Fedora 13 - Free - > Updates Debug > Reading repository metadata in from local files > Enabling rpmfusion-free-debuginfo: RPM Fusion for Fedora 13 - Free - Debug > Reading repository metadata in from local files > Enabling updates-debuginfo: Fedora 13 - x86_64 - Updates - Debug > Reading repository metadata in from local files > Enabling rpmfusion-nonfree-updates-debuginfo: RPM Fusion for Fedora 13 - > Nonfree - Updates Debug I would like to keep this auto update feature of debuginfo packages, but is there someway I could tell the plugin not to enable the debuginfo repos for all repositories, just the ones with installed debuginfo packages? Neither does this plugin come with a man page nor does it say anything under "Plugin Options:" in the output of `yum --help'. These messages can become quite annoying when you see them every single time. :-\ Thanks for any pointers. -- Suvayu Open source is the future. There are a number of active list admins here, myself included. And while in Mailman parlance, we all tend to the moderation queue, that does not mean the same thing as moderation of posts in the context you quote from Máirín. Other lists, like the devel list do have some light moderation applied at times, by marking certain threads as closed and preventing news posts from being sent to the list in that thread. That's certainly possibly to do here as well, but it's sure to annoy at least as many people as it makes happy. >> I've found some of the behavior of a few on this list to be quite >> embarrassing. In the many years I have been on mailing lists, only a few that were heavily moderated were well used and productive, IMO. Most of the good lists I have been subscribed to were that way because the members of the list did a good job of staying on topic and leading by example. I would love to see more of the latter here. One example is to simply not fuel the flames of long threads of doom. (He says, violating the sentence as he types it...) If there are egregious examples of people getting out of hand, one way to handle it without escalting to the full list is to mail the list admins directly, users-ow...@lists.fedoraproject.org in this case. If warranted, any list admin can place a member on moderation or warn them that if they don't act more respectfully they will be moderated. That's just my opinion though. F13 - goodnewws and bad news
Well on my desktop the installation of F13 from a DVD went better than I have ever seen a previous installation go. As I said before there is a place where you can decide installation or upgrade. Someone denied that earlier this week and they are wrong. However, there were two annoying problems. 1. Even with their directions I could not make the rpmfusion repos install during the Fedora install. 2. For more than 15 years I have found that the GUI partition installer hard to use and in F13 it is even more impossible to use. This is mainly because the various options are hard to distinguish from one another. Not sure how many people read the subscribe confirmations though.. I think that lots of behaviour will just have to be tolerated.. In other places (paid support mostly), there's a standard checklist and FAQ. Often, users are sent to the FAQ or knowledge base even when the problem is not addressed there, but by always talking about the FAQ and knowledge base, it gains credence and does get better. I find it hilarious when responses get the "lmgtfy" link though :) The difference, IMHO, is that such a system works for paid support. On this list, we sort of expect at least a cursory attempt to solve problems before resorting to posting on the list. Many people don't do this and see the list as their personal IT help line. That does cause resentment that sometimes boils over into the comments. Add the fact that some folks are more thin-skinned than they should be on a global forum, and it's a wonder that stuff like this doesn't happen more often. :/ -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines

It took nfsd more than 120 real seconds to write to disk. This is a bad thing, generally. It indicates huge wait on i/o issues, not necessarily memory issues. Although if swap and the NFS share are on the same disk and or controller, it could happen to be related. I would focus on resolving the disk i/o issue here. Most power-management issues are very hardware specific and it is nearly impossible for any Linux to provide a perfect solution that works for everyone. That being said, a great deal of PM related functions come from the pm-utils package. Information here: http://pm-utils.freedesktop.org/wiki/ There are some links on the top of that page which you can try, but I doubt it will provide info specific to your hardware. Running the following should display more relevant information about your config: pm-utils-bugreport-info.sh To help you diagnose the problem you would be better off looking at your logs: /var/log/pm-suspend.log /var/log/messages In the case of '/var/log/messages', look at the time stamps to see what actually occurred exactly during the suspend action. To see if your problem is the X-server (often video is the biggest issue in suspend/resume) try disabling the x-server and testing suspend: (switch to a text-console CTRL-ALT-F2) run as root: # init 3 # pm-suspend Please read the man page for some help: # man pm-action For your monitor issue look in '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' to see if it reveals anything. Sound server gone - Solved
Well, I had a motherboard toast the built in video interface, though the machine otherwise seemed to work ok. I pulled out the discs, and stuck them into a spare box I had lying around, and pulled the other interesting peripherals, like the CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives, etc, and rebooted. After some chit chat with kudzu, the machine came up, and everything worked. Except the built in sound peripheral on the motherboard. Now, this is odd because it's just an ordinary '97 style chip. After some significant period trying to get this to work, I tried the GNOME SystemSettings->Soundcard Detection and that found and made it work. That's very odd, since the hardware was previously detected, and showed up in the BrowseHardware. Anyway, after fiddling for months, a simple click has made my sound, like the cat, come back. Maybe the newbie who asked the dumb question will start to learn and eventually answer questions himself. What I find more annoying is questions like "why can't I watch video?" that give no information about what kind of video, or what version of Fedora, or what viewing app, or what happens when the video is played, or in fact anything at all that might help someone give a useful answer. Networking doesn't start on boot
Hi, I've just installed FC13 and have all updates installed. Networking doesn't automatically start, and I have to right-click on the little network icon in the upper-right and select "Enable" in order for it to bring up networking. In System->Administration->Network Device Control there are no networks or interfaces listed. In System->Administration->Network both interfaces are listed. One is shown as Active, presumably because I've "Enabled" it by right-clicking on the icon and selecting Enable. "Controlled by NetworkManager" and "Activate Devices when computer starts" are both enabled. How can I troubleshoot this? If folks > think it's a good idea I'd be happy to help having something similar > set up for this list. Speaking as someone who's managed a number of large lists (in the hundreds to thousands of members), I'm keenly attuned to the problems that can arise when a small minority doesn't behave as they should. However this is in the nature of large communities. Technical solutions such as changing to a forum format are not going to cut it, not least because many people are going to want to stick with the mailing list, so you're going to end up with two interfaces, only one of which you can control. It's always tempting to propose radical solutions when some unusual event occurs (see most responses to terrorist incidents for a real-world parallel). My view is that the recent slug-fest over the Fedora webpage design is not typical, and has mostly died down. It doesn't *need* a radical response, and the same goes for the occasional spats that crop up from time to time. Those directly involved may feel strongly, may even feel personally wounded, but the majority of the list is on the sidelines and presumably just want it all to go away so we can get back to our regularly-scheduled programming. Fortunately the use of threads helps a lot in ignoring the parts one doesn't care about, except for the rare occasions where someone hijacks a thread (though this doesn't seem to happen with the kind of thread we're talking about). My advice is to leave well alone. What I would do however is make some key aspects of the Guidelines a little more upfront when people subscribe. I don't mean simply a pointer to the complete Guidelines, but a *brief* list of the top points directly summarized in the confirmation message. poc -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines
gtk stock icons missing
I don't know if this is a fedora problem or a gtk one... I have been writing some short gtk programs, as a learning exercise. So far as I can see, I should be able to add items from stock, but the images are missing and all I get are the default items as mnemonics. I have attached a short example. It compiles with: gcc stock.c `pkg-config --cflags gtk+-2.0 --libs gtk+-2.0` It seems that gtk can't find the directory with the images. The files needed seem to be in /usr/share/icons/gnome and show up in the gtk-demo program. However, Glade buttons selected from stock do not have the icons either. Turning the touchpad off
I have /usr/bin/synclient TouchpadOff=1 in /etc/rc.d/rc.local . Unfortunately this does not work, presumably because it runs too early, before X starts. But nothing in ccsm proper apparently has any effect for me. I ran ccsm from a terminal window, in case in blurts something to standard error, but nothing comes out, it just takes my settings, and, nothing happens. It's probably that the freshly-minted noveau driver doesn't yet implement some key piece of functionality ccsm needs, but no error gets reported. But maybe I've missed some required step somewhere along the way. Not sure, but I believe this is a configuration issue. If windows do wobble and the cube effect works, then nouveau driver seems to be doing its job right. I think this is a Gnome thing, starting compiz in a custom manner and ignoring ccsm settings. Looks like starting Compiz using the fusion icon is the trick. Some of the ccsm settings still do not appear to do something -- "3D Windows" doesn't seem to do anything when I CTRL-ALT-Down and flip desktops, but others do, the water effect and the paint fire effect, so looks like it's working. It's not the same setup you've got (onboard Geforce 9100), and it's a not quite up-to-date Rawhide (compiz wouldn't work with the latest mesa-dri-drivers-experimental), but ccsm does work for me. I do think these three problems are exacerbated by the nature of email and mailing lists. You send a mail, you can't take it back. Once a mail goes out, people will have received it, so a moderator can't go back after the fact and stop posting on a given topic. Actually there are no per-topic controls on a mailing list. Lately I've been thinking a lot about how alternative interfaces to mailing lists might improve some of the problems inherent to them. I actually set up a blog gateway and a forum gateway to the Fedora design list. While it was primarily to solve a different problem (the largest pool of designers out there for us to recruit from aren't familiar with mailing lists at all), it might help here. If folks think it's a good idea I'd be happy to help having something similar set up for this list. Well, I came up with a temporary solution. I downgraded nss-softokn-freebl. It's kind of interesting the downgrading nss-softokn-freebl only affected one package, but "yum remove nss-softokn-freebl" would remove 2041 packages... Anyway, I have a temporary workaround.
