Hi,

congratulations, even if that does not seem appropriate :-)

You should test your other servers with both security programs as well.
You should do it on a regular basis, by the way.

Rkhunter installs as a cron job as well and sends a report to your system mail
box.
# ls /etc/cron.daily/
... rkhunter ...

Keep around some good (and up-to-date) live-cd (Knoppix, etc) that also has
those security programs on it (check that beforehand).
It must be kept up-to-date (downloaded and burned) frequently due to changes in
attack patterns recognition.
But it is safer to perform the scan from a read-only media.

There is a clear sense of apprehension in Fedora community :-)

JB

Any of these "detection applications" can report false positives. Which
is why they report "your system *may* be infected" or "*Possible* XXX
installed...".

My message is simple. If you run these apps and they say you may be
infected...don't jump to a conclusion and nuke your system.

rkhunter or chkrootkit? I assume you mean rkhunter??
If so, I tend to agree. I saw a lot of google hits reporting

I would suggest folks take a step back and do some research on "lkm

you were rooted and blow everything away and start over. Also a good

I just drop the vlc to 1/4 size with the drop down menu (there's a shortcut,
don't remember it offhand) and then drag and drop the window. I'm probably
missing something, that's the way I watch TV (HDhomerun capture).

chkrootkit found this, but I have no idea where the process is:

Checking `lkm'... You have 1 process hidden for readdir command
You have 1 process hidden for ps command
chkproc: Warning: Possible LKM Trojan installed

So, if it will not tell me which process it is, how can I find it?

Weird Network Manager Problem (Updated)

2010-09-25 Thread Mike Dwiggins
  JB,

I figured you or someone else might like to know this. I killed the dhc
process and cleaned up the .conf files did a restart on Network Manage
and everything worked!

Ran chkrootkit and it hit on netstat as Infected (imagine that). It
also reported a possible LKM Trojan intrusion. I then ran rkhunter and
it threw warnings on the following files:
/bin/netstat
/bin/ps
/usr/bin/top
/usr/bin/lsof

It also reported undocumented password change and group file changes.

Password I could see with me going through Webmin to reset the root
password but, I was careful to change nothing else much less groups!

I rebooted and the problem was back just as before!

With that I threw up my hands and have WipeDrive going on the drives in
DoD mode!

Hope this might help someone!

Again thanks for the help!

do you ever procrastinate? ;)

i know a win head who likes suffering. during one of his times of
morning, it was with a r/w cd that he could not erase.

if i am recalling problem correctly, it was with some 'freebie' he
pulled from internet.

he asked me if i knew why he had problem and i told him it was because
he was using windows and hacked software. not appreciated.

months later, when we were talking about other problems, this time his
new install of vista, he mentioned that he did get cd back to use.

as it turned out, a win head friend told him to 'close' cd. he did
and was able to reuse r/w cd.

i do not know if this would apply to a dvd, but what the heck.

also, something i would try, use k3b to see if you can do anything
there with it.

I would wait for FC14 if you want to rebuild. At that point FC12 will
become End-of-Life, which basically means unsupported. This is how
Fedora is structured.

Then you will have to find a repo that will allow you to download the
older files that were upgraded. Google for how to create and add a
local rpm repo and put them in that directory and then run the
appropriate yum line to 'downgrade' to them. Hopefully this will bring
the AirPort back to life.

So, you are missing the coddec, and I would venture to say probably
missing a lot of other codecs.
I do not know which fedora package provides the codecs.
The authors of mplayer provide these codecs at:

That site's not really all about refills.

CIS = Continuous Ink System

You can top off the external tanks before they get empty.

HP's are OK (I've owned a few)... but IMO, their printer business model is
selling medium-quality printers below cost and making it up on ink.

With my Epson R800 and R1800 (they're shared on my network using a D-Link
DPR1260 hard wired, not wireless), printing on photo paper, I cannot tell
the difference between their output and shots from a lab... well, except for
the price per print... less than a dollar for paper + ink for an 8x10,
versus $3 at the discount 1-hour photo labs. And that's using the $12 Epson
carts (yellow, magenta, cyan, black, photo black, red, blue and gloss
optimizer), not refills or the CIS (I'd like a CIS for them, but don't have
the need for that volume at this time; the same CIS fits both the R800 and
R1800). The R800 and R1800 both come with a tray to print photo-quality
directly on 'white top' CD/DVD discs, FWIW.

I didn't recommend either of those printers to the OP because I usually use
a windows machine to print from ... not necessarily because of the
drivers -- the CUPS/Gutenberg drivers seem to have all the same options
(including the CD/DVD paper-selection) in them as the Epson-provided windows
interface -- but because I'm not entirely comfortable with GIMP yet. So I
can't really testify as to how the quality matches up using only fedora.

I have an HP laserjet for B&W document printing, but I've never experimented
with color lasers on photo paper, so can't attest to their print quality,
either.

Ok, yum installed mplayer and the GUI too. It appears to accept the
camera user and password but it doesn't seem able to decode the
mjpeg video? The screen goes to black as though it is starting but
then it reverts to a splash screen with a play button and does
nothing after that.

I will spend some more time investigating mplayer. The ability to
put the user and password in the start command is a definite
convenience, if only it can be made to display the video.

Thanks for the help.

Weird Network Manager Problem (On Hold)

2010-09-25 Thread Mike Dwiggins
Thanks for the info JB. I have that printed out and will try the two
programs before I do anything else.

The Fedora machine is my Hobby machine and does not affect my wife's
business in any way so I can afford to take some time to research.

However like you the root password getting hosed leads me to think that
I did get hacked so I do not trust this install anymore.

Immediately after the testing it is going away!

Thanks for the Help!

I had burned many media before and after the problem.
At the time, I of the problem, I had not posted it to any

Here we go !

The entry 'ps aux |grep -i dhc' that there is a dhclient run under control of
NetworkManager.
When it runs, it obtains all default and user requested data from DHCP and DNS
servers and modifies those pesky system files.

Important:
Normally, when you configure your interface as you described (static IP, DNS),
the NetworkManager is run, but without NetworkManager-controlled dhclient.
I just checked that that on my other machine :-)

So, something got screwed up in the past, either during configuration thru
System/Administration/Network/ utility or panel's NetworkManager Applet
utility.
FYI, I had bad experience with the second one some months ago, submitted
report and they did these and other fixes to it.

Let's try to clean up some of this stuff.

Let's save that dhcp-lease file for interrogation later on (it probably
contains lease data that relates to invalid IP addresses, etc; that's what
screwed up your IP data in various system files):
# mv /var/lib/dhclient/dhclient-15087fb0-92c7-40fe-ad3e-373bf0997205-eth0.lease
/var/lib/dhclient/dhclient-15087fb0-92c7-40fe-ad3e-373bf0997205-eth0.lease-
crash

and create an empty file instead:
# touch /var/lib/dhclient/dhclient-15087fb0-92c7-40fe-ad3e-373bf0997205-
eth0.lease

Later on, you should examine that saved file for IP addresses, etc; check them
with some DNS-type entries (dig, nslookup) on the Internet; you may want to
talk to your ISP about them, time of the presumed attack (system downtime),
check with your utilities provider about a time of presumed downtime in
electricity supply, etc.

Let's kill that dhclient that should not run.
# killall /sbin/dhclient
Confirm that it is gone:
# ps aux|grep -i dhc

After that you should restart your desktop (GNOME, etc), but best would be to
verify the entire startup sequence and reboot your machine back to the desktop.
After that verify again as above that dhclient is gone and that lease file
is still empty as it should be.

Correct James. The clobbering of the cache by 2 different threads
does not depend on whether or not the cpu is hyperthreaded.
Any two threads can achieve this clobering on any cpu, and it is
often the case.
The only situation where hyperthreading will show noticeable
improvement of execution speed is where the threads are all
children of the same process and are well behaved and work
almost entirely on the parent process' data space, with proper
synchronization. However, if the parent data space and text
space is larger than the cache, then the sibling threads can
still cause cache refill every time a sibling accesses a different
data space than other siblings. Ditto with the instruction cache.
Different threads have a different set of instructions.

My basic attitude is forget hyperthreading. IMHO it is largely
a hype!

Re: Are all cores unlocked?

2010-09-25 Thread James Wilkinson
Michael Miles wrote:

> each core does double duty so to speak by looking after two threads
> would it not do basically the same work as one core full bore on one thread.
> Is there a speed difference (faster, slower)

Good question. The answer is “it depends, but it’s usually faster”.

Reasons why it can be faster:
 * Most modern processors can despatch up to three or four instructions
at a time (IF the front end can identify enough instructions that
logically can be run at the same time), but will have six to ten
execution units to actually run the instructions¹. Therefore, one
thread might be able to make use of execution units the other thread
   isn’t using.

 * Compared to CPU speed, it takes a seriously long time to get data
from main memory. If one thread is waiting for data to arrive, the
other one can make full use of the processor.

 * Most modern CPUs do out-of-order execution, which means they can
often find things to do while waiting for data to come from (L2/L3)
cache. That’s not guaranteed, though, so the other thread might get
   more resources to play with.

On the other hand, Atom isn’t out-of-order, and can’t do anything
while it’s waiting for data from Level 2 cache. So the other thread
has full run of the core.

Why it can be slower:
 * The cache memory is having to look after two sets of data, not just
one, which means there’ll be a lot more cache misses. The worst case
example would be something like two threads, each of which are
regularly hitting a different 6K of data, on a Pentium 4 with only 8K
Level 1 data cache. Each thread will be constantly replacing the
other’s data, meaning each thread is continually having to wait for
   data from Level 2 cache.

This effect was especially noticeable on Pentium 4-based CPUs: a lot of
high-end benchmarks would be run with SMT turned off.

Hope this helps,

James.

¹ The instruction units are specialised: if a thread is 100% integer,
the FPU units won’t be of any use to it.

Is what you want a static image, as in a photo, or do
you want a tiny window showing the live camera feed?

VLC video window is integrated into the control gui and thus
cannot be scaled down to the size that you can with mplayer
view window.
Now
what small corner window?
Moving anything on the screen only takes that
you click and hold on the title bar and then drag it to any
position on the screen and release. How hard can that be?

Keep in mind that the fix will break your ability to run any 32bit
software, such as the Wine product (it is recommended for now that the
64 bit version be kept as a real alpha/beta there are problems running
some software products with it.)

No. Not without re-installing it, which means starting all over again, in

I understand that thought. Some of the items are very restricted by

Thank you for the clarification on this item.

FYI: When using growisofs from other dvd+rw-tools versions, one may need
to use /dev/dvd rather than /dev/sr0. This is true for RHEL5's

The new kernels broke many things.

Can you still boot back to MacOSX on the Air? If so, it may be possible
to get the older files and then put them on local media (CD/DVD/Thumb
Drive) and then setup a local repo to grab them from after booting back
to FC12.

I'm not that familiar with doing so, but others here may be able to
assist in directing where on the system you can find them or on the

kmod-catalyst and monitor config

2010-09-25 Thread Joseph L. Casale
I needed working ogl for a couple cad apps so I installed the kmods (akmods
wouldn't
compile on latest on latest kernel, so running 1 behind present).

When I first booted, I had my laptop and external monitor working, res on ext
was low.
So I disabled LVDS and set CRT1 to 1680x1050 (Auto) but it wouldn't change, so
I went
down one res setting, then back and it changed?

Subsequent reboots though keep setting it low. What's with the (Auto) in the
1680x1050 setting and the changing
behavior? xorg.conf is as the catalyst install left it. livna-config-display
crashes when run.

Thanks!

saving mixer settings on shutdown/restoring on startup

On shutdown, mixer settings are automatically saved with alsactl store. (There
is a bug in alsa-utils that keeps this from working -
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=637291 - but it's easy to work
around.) However, I don't see anything that restores mixer settings on startup.

That command is not correct ... its piping output of 'rpm -V' into a
command '--verify' which it correctly tells you does not exist.

the options -V and --verify are equivalent - and wildcard '*" wont work.

I just commented line 28 and it compiles fine. But the program doesn't
show up although it is in Applications -> Internet. May be perhaps a
bug with the code or the commenting caused the error.

Thank's for the clear up. My question is with Hyperthreading that is if
each core does double duty so to speak by looking after two threads
would it not do basically the same work as one core full bore on one thread.
Is there a speed difference (faster, slower)

It seems to me that two threads time share one core. Thus making the
work load the same as if one core was doing one task but at twice the speed

It is confusing why they would have Hyperthreading there.
An i7 920 with 4 cores does the same amount of work as the same chip
with 8 cores showing with Hyperthreading active.

Excellent description. That being said the reason I have such a big
honking APC brand UPS is that my company's Logistics department
overbought on a major contract! Rather than paying Inventory Tax on the
extras the Boss sold them to several of us below our Dealer cost! I
have approx. two hours run time but, this outage lasted over three and
1/2 hours while no one was home!

According to my logs I did get a controlled shutdown on all three of my
servers, the two Red Hat ES 4 severs have no problem only my Fedora 13
server. Thus I am leaning more towards a hack that was just waiting for
ANY reboot to pounce!

Especially after I got this:

# rpm -V| --verify *
bash: --verify: command not found
rpm: no arguments given for verify

Something is not right!

Michael Miles wrote:

Unfortunately, Bulldozer doesn’t do conventional SMT (which is what
Intel usually¹ means by hyperthreading). It has two integer cores
sharing a wide floating point engine and level 2 cache. This combination
is what AMD call a “module”, but they will be selling it as two cores.

So a 16 core Bulldozer will have 16 hardware threads.

A module takes more power and area than a traditional core with
hyperthreading, but you should get more performance out of it, too.

Sorry,

James.

¹ Hyperthreading is an Intel trademark, and, as such, means precisely
what Intel wants it to mean at the moment. This can change (it means
something different for the Itanium).

an ups should not be considered as a means to keep a system up and
running until power is restored. that is not a battery system, unless
you have an auto start gas powered generator to kick in and supply mains.

it should be thought of as a means to allow a proper shutdown if
power is not restored within a short period.

an ups that will supply just 5 or 10 minutes of up time is better
than none.

the name ups, uninterrupted power supply. not un-interruptible
power supply, as in continuous.

a good ups, runs from a floated battery. that is, it is powered by
battery and ac mains supply a low level charging.

this way, when mains are lost, you are already on battery power, so
there is no 'glitch' of sine wave.

once mains are lost, a signal notifies system and a proper shutdown
can be started.

> I am leaning towards a hack or a corruption of Network Manager.

yes. jb's points are much to be considered.

Video in a small window -

2010-09-25 Thread Bob Goodwin

This computer runs F-13 and XFCE.

I have two "IP cameras" that provide video streams that I would like
to make available in one corner of this wide screen monitor. I can
view both cameras using either Firefox or VLC, I normally just click
on an icon that brings up the desired camera in VLC but it would be
convenient if I could elect to put a small image in one corner and
keep it there when required, as when waiting for someone to come in
the driveway, e.g.

Can anyone suggest a means of doing that?

Thanks.

Bob

sometimes it works sometimes the import just gives an error. I have not
tried to export to .docx only .doc ... at this point I'd give docx

I have checked fairly well and everything works as should be from
localhost and I can find no other problem other than the IP
configuration problem.

I am leaning towards a hack or a corruption of Network Manager.

For cd's it is ok, but it does sometimes have problems, which are are not in
the original BTW. I can confirm that is the case. I have had some bad burns
that I tried to burn at slower speed because wodim could not control the speed
after I told it to burn at 4x. The original fixed this problem for that
writer.

That might have been a while ago, while like on Fedora 3 or Fedora 4? where the
author might have been asking for a key to be able to burn DVDs. Plus Fedora
used device names for burning and Joerg S, uses scsi names like 1,0,0 and that
did not go well for either party. But cdrtools built for Fedora worked well,
and the same cannot be said for cdrkit since there are some bugs. The cd code
works fine, but for DVDs, the code has a long way to go to achieve the same
maturity that cdrtools has.For a great while now, the cdrtools toolkit has
had DVD burning capability with no complaints.

This is another issue, not taking away from his contributions to the free
software world. Debian and original cdrtools author were at it, then since
Debian is like the leader, Fedora followed and removed the cdrtools suite.
Other folks don't complain, and have had cdrtools on their distros. Still the
FSF has not found Debian, and Fedora for that matter "FREE ENOUGH" :(

You can take the time to read the following if you'd like:

http://cdrecord.berlios.de/private/linux-dist.html

Also, like others have mentioned you may also use growisofs, it works too. I
happily use cdrecord from cdrtools, the original. I like Coke, the original.
You can drink Pepsi too, but there is nothing like the original.

Licensing is a sorry explanation or excuse for not using the original. The
other guys, like FreeBSD, Solaris/OpenSolaris, do use GPL programs with their
CDDL licenses and FreeBSD Licenses and there are no problems. No one has sued
that I know of. Except of course, Oracle and Google :)

Antonio

First, if the OP is dual booting with Windows, then

system-config-date and under the "Time" tab UNCHECK the box saying
"System clock uses UTC". I would also recommend turning ntpd on (a
check-box on "Date and Time" tab) System/Administration/Date and Time from the
menu.

Windows always uses local time. Unix was designed to use UTC, but Linux can be
either because it is frequently dual booted. You can also set up NTP, by going
to the same screen under the date and time tab, and syncronize date and time
over Internet. It is best to choose time servers close to you, but you can also
use the ones that are preset in fedora.

You do not get your root passwd hosed just because your machine went down or
some unrelated software package malfunctions ...
You have to consider that you have been hacked, I guess. Normally you should
take your machine offline until you understand what is the damage.

Well, where do you get that info from ?
Are you auto-configured by dhclient ?
System/Administration/Network/Devices - interface - Edit
General
Controlled by NetworkManager ?
Automatically obtain IP address settings with DHCP ?
Automatically obtain DNS info from provider ?

Also, check:
$ ps aux |grep -i dhc
jb6982 0.0 0.0 4360 708 pts/3S+ 15:21 0:00 grep -i dhc
root 14415 0.0 0.0 2984 676 ?S06:13 0:00 /sbin/dhclient

/var/lib/dhclient/dhclient-5fb06bd0-0bb0-7ffb-45f1-d6edd65f3e03-eth0.lease -cf
/var/run/nm-dhclient-eth0.conf eth0

That's response on my system.

Look at what kind of info you got last time:
# less
/var/lib/dhclient/dhclient-5fb06bd0-0bb0-7ffb-45f1-d6edd65f3e03-eth0.lease

Look at your own config settings:
# less /var/run/nm-dhclient-eth0.conf
That's perhaps from:
# # ls -al /etc/dhclient-*
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 40 Feb 21 2010 /etc/dhclient-eth0.conf
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 40 Feb 21 2010 /etc/dhclient-wlan0.conf

do you have a full backup that you can use to wipe drive, run a

you can use rpm to run a check on all you have installed, but it

not really. your drive got trashed.

I think in practice it breaks down before that. I seem to recall
at work the OS guys were testing a PCI expansion box and filled
it up with random cards like NICs, and some versions of the linux
kernel had big problems with the algorithms used to enumerate
the PCI devices when that many were plugged in (I forget how big
the box was, but I'm sure it was smaller than 32000 :-).

Reinstall or recompile? I always have to recompile (i.e. run the setup
script) after a new kernel install. I've never had it work any other way
so I guess I don't consider it a bug.

i do hate to ask, but, have you tried to burn a cd or dvd?

like just to see if it can still burn.

a cd/dvd drive can lose burn capability and still read a cd/dvd.

These rules say "accept any new connection from anyone on port 631".
The rejected packets are your packets, which you are sending to everyone,
including yourself. Maybe they are not considered NEW but ESTABLISHED.
In this case, you should try adding rules like these and see if something
changes:
   -A INPUT -m tcp -p tcp --dport 631 -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j ACCEPT
   -A INPUT -m udp -p udp --dport 631 -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j ACCEPT

There are certain windows burning programs that cause the same effect on
windows, they basically destroy the disc for rewrites.

It may have been burned with one such program,
and may be beast suited as a beer mat.

I have personal experience of such a program.

I can't say that I've had problems with wodim, it does what it's
supposed to, as it's supposed to. I did have problems with the
cdrtools, which required an extra encumbered thing to be able to burn
DVDs.

The author did themselves no favours with their attitude, either.
Changes in licensing, then all the bitching...

Unfortunately, refilling isn't really an option for some printers.

For instance, my old Hewlett Packard had combined ink tanks and printing
heads. By the time the ink had run low, the head was nearly always
hopelessly clogged. Sometimes, it had clogged long before then. No
amount of cleaning routines, or manual scrubbing, would fix them. Also,
to attempt to refill them meant drilling a hole into a sealed box.
Which is hard enough, but if bits of crumbled plastic fell inside in the
wrong place, that caused yet more problems.

If you're going to buy an inkjet, get one with separate heads from the
print tanks. And if you ever find them being sold at a reasonable
price, buy a spare set before they become unavailable or unaffordable
(as happened with my Sharp printer - first they went up to well over
$100 each, and then nobody stocked them).

Inkjet printers, a very un-green product.

Re: Unable to blank DVD+R R/W

2010-09-25 Thread Zoltan Hoppar
There is an holy dependency bug witch is integrated into Fedora from ages.
Let me explain:

There are two programs what you could use to write CD's, DVD's - one is the
deprecated: and well hated bogus wodim (what is an debian zombie fork of an
old-timer cdrtools), and the another is libburnia. If you look around,
between the gnome/kde programs mostly they are looking for wodim - but
couldn't tell you why. But sometimes they are using libburnia, witch
currently under development, but works like a charm.
The problem exists mostly because of wodim - there are many types of bugs,
what includes permission rights and many more types too. I don't know why
are the programs are still using this engine...

If you are trying dalesa 1.1.1 (i.e.
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/dalesa/dalesa-1.1.1.tar.bz2 ) and
are seeing error messages in config.log like:
--
/usr/bin/ld: /tmp/ccdx7W9g.o: undefined reference to symbol 'EVP_MD_CTX_init'
/usr/bin/ld: note: 'EVP_MD_CTX_init' is defined in DSO /lib/libcrypto.so.10 so
try adding it to the linker command line
/lib/libcrypto.so.10: could not read symbols: Invalid operation
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
--
try this:
--
--- dalesa-1.1.1/configure.in.debug 2010-08-21 04:14:06.0 +0900
