First, the Fedora 10 DVD ISO file size should be 3.5 to 3.9GB depending on
whether its the 32 or 64-bit OS versions. So, that bootable DVD is not the
complete file. Besides checking the ISO size, you should also do a checksum on
it to check for errors.

IIRC, EFI support was not implemented until Fedora 11. My Fedora 9 64-bit DVD
doesn't have an EFI folder and it boots and installs just fine. So, don't
worry about 10 not having it.

As to why the "other" DVD doesn't boot . . . Improperly burned? Bad download?
 Bad media?

Why don't you tell us in detail, step by step, what you did, what OS you used
to do it, and what software to do it with, when creating the DVD, then maybe
what you're doing incorrectly will be apparent.

Question on /var/named permissions

2010-12-15 Thread Michael D. Setzer II
I was looking in the /var/log/messages and saw messages about permission
when righting named files to /var/named. In looking, I found the directories
have root as the owner with rwx or rw but named was group with r-x or r--.
Changed the mode so named group had same rights as owner, and
messages no longer show up.

Just use the caching named, and this machine was upgraded to 14 from 12,
so not sure if this is an issue with upgrade versus clean install.

A suggestion please.

Instead of using "/dev/sdb1" in /etc/fstab, can you use either,
UUID=uuid-for-the-partition or LABEL=label-for-the-partition?

I speak from personal experience.

At one time, I tried using "/dev/sdf1" for a usb drive.

Then I added another usb device.

Depending how usb devices were discovered,
my usb drive wasn't /dev/sdf1 any more.

When the device is plugged in, even if the device is not mounted,
can you check "ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid" or "ls -l /dev/disk/by-label"
to learn the uuid or label for the usb drive, respectively?

Since you stated you labeled the partition, 2GHJTCB4,
you should be able to do, in your /etc/fstab,

LABEL=2GHJTCB4 /media/usbdriveext4defaults1 2

Problem with detached network printers in F14

2010-12-15 Thread Joachim Backes
Hi all,

I have a networkwork printer with an URL like:

dnssd://Lexmark%20E120n._printer._tcp.local/

The avahi daemon is running. But if my system is booted and the printer
is switched off coincidentally, then it remains disabled after the
finished boot. So I have to enable it by the cupsenable cmd after having
switched it on.

My question: how can I achieve that the printer will be enabled
automatically (after it is re-switched on)?

Any advice is welcome.

Kind regards

What's more, Fedora 10 DVD is sized approx. 4GiB, whilst F14 is 3.3GiB
due to optimization.
Both above for amd64, and should be a bit smaller when applied to i386s.

No. I'm sure. But can you tell me why yum explicitly wants to download from an
ftp site while it's set up as an
http repository.

Maybe I'll should try to change the dns to setup the same repo as
http://repo.lineek.nl/ and try again.

That explains why an attempt to install it ended with no sign of its

Answers:

Just enable the Adobe Repo (as root in terminal)

1.- rpm -ivh
http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/adobe-release/adobe-release-i386-1.0-1.noarch.rpm

Then, do:

1.- sudo yum -y install flash-plugin

Or simply install Google Chrome, it has flash built in...

About Gnash, is too "alpha" to work :(

Do you also have the auto-mounter running? Because /media is it's
playground, and I'm not sure how well it'll handle an already mounted
drive in its playground. It's more usual to manually mount things
elsewhere.

Well, here's an interesting thing: I have two computers, one F14 and the
other F12. (I'm planning to clean out the F12 machine as soon as I have
replicated my environment and migrated my files.) F14 could handle the
YUM rpm (but only when I used Konsole and "su" to run it with full
privileges), and then Kpackagekit was able to process upgrades. F12
choked on those upgrades. So already I see an improvement.

Next question: if I install mp3 libraries, would Gnash be able to play
all Flash plugins, even if they had mp3 sound? Has anyone tried that
kind of setup?

Testing changes to fstab

2010-12-15 Thread Robert Moskowitz
A long time ago I got burned with a type in /etc/fstab and back then I
was told how to test out changes to fstab.

Well I just added my USB drive to fstab and want to make sure I got it
right. The line I added is:

/dev/sdb1/media/usbdriveext4defaults1 2

I figure this out from the fstab man page and that the following works:

mount /dev/sdb1 /media/usbdrive

But I want to test first before I reboot. BTW, the messages I now get
for this drive during boot are:

Dec 15 19:56:06 homebase kernel: usb 1-2: New USB device found,
idVendor=0bc2, idProduct=3300
Dec 15 19:56:06 homebase kernel: usb 1-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1,

Dec 15 19:56:06 homebase kernel: usb 1-2: Product: Desktop
Dec 15 19:56:06 homebase kernel: usb 1-2: Manufacturer: Seagate

Dec 15 19:56:06 homebase kernel: usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1

Oh, and I used e2label to label the partition the same as its serial #).

It's a common problem with Huawei and ZTE (ONDA) USB-modems. The OP may
provide us with the exact model to be sure. But the usual case is that
those devices are initially made for windoze (and macos probably). The
build-in flash memory auto-detects itself as CD-rom and windoze user
should click the button in some kind of pop-up to confirm the
installation of the driver. In some cases modem requires
auto-reconnection from connection program every 30 seconds. Summary, it
won't work on Linux without additional configuration. Normally one can
deal with it in two ways:
1. by using usb_modeswitch
2. or flashing the modem

First way is preferable if you're planning to use this modem both under
Linux and windoze (i.e. a friend or your boss gave it to your for
vacation ;-). In any other cases I would recommend the second item in
the list above. Anyway, before using usb_modeswitch one should install
it. Yum/rpm is a preferable method as it will automatically create all
the necessary udev rules for you. Probably you'll have to
modify /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf. Use google to find the right values of
device-specific settings in it. To connect to the Internet you'll have
to create a Mobile Broadband connection with NetworkManager or to use
something like ppp, kppp or wvdial with mobile provider specific
settings to dial the number.

Second way is a bit tricky but the result is (in most known cases)
working modem, supported by recent Fedoras out of the box. You should
eject the fake CD it plays. As it was already discussed, it's /dev/sr1.
You can simply umount it if it displays its icon on desktop or in
nautilus (assuming you're using gnome). After that the new links will be
created under /dev directory: /dev/ttyUSB*, where /dev/ttyUSB0 is your
modem (probably zero at the end, but you'll have to ensure that with
dmesg after CD ejection). Then you'll have to send modem-specific
AT-command to that device. Utility like minicom is useful for this task.

The OP really should search google with the exact model. Chances are
high that with most popular models step-bu-step guides are available.

| I would have changed my version to just step through the slurp in
| memory.

I'm a little reluctant to slurp the whole thing into memory by habit. Given
that it is just as easy to read piecemeal I try to go with that kind of
approach when I can. Slurping into memory is quick and easy, but doesn't
scale. For a once off task of known size that needs quick implementation it's
certainly reasonable to do so, though it suductively leads one into the
accidental huge-string-resize of your example code.

I think the approach I'm advocating here is: try the low memory approach by
default unless there's a specific performance or
complexity/difficulty-of-coding downside to it.

| low = 0
| high = 8
|
| first8 = slurp [low:high]
| low += 48
| high += 48
|
| etc.

Yeah, I thought of modding your code that way. But it was almost easier
to recode using the direct/dumb-as-rocks approach I used because it
saves me doing any arithmetic:-)

| You are obviously a higher class python coder than I am.

Probably just more practiced and with a longer background in resource
limited environments. (Oh, when I were a lud...)

| I treat
| python like an elegant interpreted C. You treat it like the evolving
| functional ??? it is becoming.

Python's not really becoming a functional language, though it has several of
the pleasures of those. Generators have the same feel and heft as lazy
function evaluation but have more scope to accidentally do extra execution of
the "yield" is in the wrong place, or if their inner workings are greedy (eg
the slurp everything into memory approach, which might easily do the whole
computation before yielding anything depending on your mindset at the
time).

One of the big differences between C and python (ignoring the
interpretation and memory management etc) is generators and exceptions.

Generators let you write little pretend "run at need" threadlike stuff
that does a specific task without embedding it in or emcumbering it with
the larger outer task. In a lot of ways it is like a component in a
shell pipeline.

And exceptions give you a lot of scope for writing code as if it will
always get perfect data or arguments; because error conditions usually
throw exceptions you don't need to clutter your algorithm with sanity
checks they was you have to in C or similar languages. The difficulty
with the clutter is not just that of thinking of all the ways your code
might get mistreated by the real world, but also of devising the correct
actions when the errors are detected. Since the correct action is often
obscure or very application/task dependent, not needing to make that
decision so often is a big win.

I understand.
One more thing - I do not know what shell you use, but bash has an ability to
store entry's time stamp in its history file, that can be made pretty much
protected by you (man bash; HISTTIMEFORMAT).

You can also examine the source code of mount/umount in
$ rpm -qf /bin/mount
util-linux-ng-2.18-4.6.fc14.i686
to discover if time stamp is indeed stored somewhere.

Well yes JB. That works out fine. However, I specifically seek a native Linux
command, or location of kernel or filesystem register where the info is stored.
I believe there's no way the timestamp is not stored. I need to avoid kludgy

If you're not an expert you may have trouble, yes, although it is
backwards compatible. That's why I don't recommend it.

> Can I not find a gcc-4.5.1-4.fc13.src.rpm ?

I don't know that any such thing ever existed. It would be interesting
to try to discover what sage used. My bet is that they installed something
from rawhide by mistake and used that to build.

But really you're looking in the wrong place for a fix. They claim it's
the F13 version, but it isn't.

[389-users] Help with multiple office setup

2010-12-15 Thread Orion Poplawski
I'm hoping to get some help/suggestions for setting up a directory server for
a company with multiple offices.

Our goal is to provide unified logins/passwords company-wide. We also have
local Windows domains. In my office, the domain is run by a Samba 3 server
with 389 providing the back end.

Any general suggestions? Currently I have all of our users in the top
dc=nwra,dc=com domain since I wanted to provide a unified space, but now not
so sure how this will interact with the windows domains.

Thanks!

As a totally wild guess, maybe it's /dev/sr1? (see the line immediately
above).

you could also open a terminal and type "mount" to see if it actually
got mounted, and if so that would also show both the device and the mount
point.

if it did get automounted, the default behavior would be to both (1)
put an icon on your desktop, and (2) open a browser window into the root
of the filesystem on that device.

so if you don't see those things on the desktop, and it doesn't show in
the output of 'mount', I'd guess it didn't get mounted, indicating some
as-yet-undiagnosed problem.

Thanks - also in Sanskrit I found from google!

I could not find any direct way to get at the last umount time but I
wonder if this is recorded in the /var/log/messages file ?
--
mike c

I thought perhaps that syslog would "catch" umounts and record them to
/var/log/messages. Obviously not by default. I was hoping someone would know if
there is facility|level for syslog.conf for this. I couldn't identify it (if
exists). I still believe that 'something' stores umount timestamps. I have a
client who wants these recorded. Ah!

You can install sage from the distribution repository on Ubuntu. When
I contemplated all the possible ways of dealing with an unsupported
but complicated package like sage, I decided that it was simpler just
to install a virtual instance of Ubuntu.

If it isn't in the boot menu, you probably installed grub to the /boot
partition of the Fedora
installation. You need to add an entry to the menu.lst of the grub for
mandrake that points to
that boot partition. Here is an example

title Fedora 14 configfile

root (hd0,4)
configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst

This root should work for your layout above if the boot is part of / rather
than separate for
Fedora. This will bring up a second menu of boot options for F14 only when you
select it. That is,
you will first see the boot menu for Mandriva, then when you select the above
entry, you will see
the menu for Fedora.

If it doesn't work, please post the contents of your mandriva
/boot/grub/menu.lst file, and, if
possible, the output of fdisk -l (it will list your partition table).

I also have Fedora 12 and as you point out, it prints information on help.
Try the following and compare:

which alternatives
...gives you the actual PATH of the command you're trying)

rpm -qf /usr/sbin/alternatives
...shows that it comes with the chkconfig package.

ls -l /usr/sbin/alternatives gives me:

My chkconfig package is: chkconfig-1.3.44-1.i686

Check /var/log/messages...

Other than that, it is strange indeed.

I have been looking for a replacement for Mandriva 2009 as my second

C D and installed it on my Asus 1000 netbook.
My 160 gb. hard drive now looks like this:
sda1(18 gb) Mandriva 2010,sda5(19 gb) Fedora 14,sda6(3.6 gb)
swap,sda7(106 gb) home.

But Fedora 14 does not appear on the boot menu, all I have there
is:Mandriva 2010,Mandriva (safe mode) and desktop 2.6.33-7.
My neighbour (and mentor) David Pipe did some research and found this

I'd suggest opening a new bug against Fedora 14. The maintainers there
may be unaware of the issue or it may be something else.

Open a new bug and note that you think it's similar to the 613886 one.

That looks normal. Try this:

You can create a bootable USB from live.iso with :

dd if=/path/to/live.iso of=/dev/your_usb_device

note that "your_usb_device" must be the whole device (eg "sdb"), not a
partition on that device (eg "sdb1").

Re: sage

2010-12-15 Thread Patrick Dupre

thank,

I understand, but I am trying to install
sage-4.6-linux-64bit-fedora_release_13_goddard_-x86_64-Linux.tar.lzma

which seems to indicates that this is the right version !!
How can I install GLIBCXX_3.4.14
without installing fedora 14 ?

I experienced network problems with fedora 14.

Take a close look at the error message. It refers to _libstdc++.so.6_

libstdc++-4.5.1-4.fc14.i686

And here is your answer: sr1. It is also seen as a CD-ROM drive so it might

If it was for just me, neither would I. But the OP is obviously
unfamiliar with python (or perl or ruby) or he would be doing the job
using one of them without asking. That said, I didn't put in the

I would have changed my version to just step through the slurp in
memory.

low = 0
high = 8

first8 = slurp [low:high]
low += 48
high += 48

etc.

You are obviously a higher class python coder than I am. I treat
python like an elegant interpreted C. You treat it like the evolving
functional ??? it is becoming.

Problems with the command alternatives

2010-12-15 Thread Robert Moskowitz
I am having problems with the command alternatives

On the system in question, I type the command in, even by itself and
NOTHING seems to happen. No output at all.

I reboot the box and no difference. This is F12. I have another F12
system that at least providing just the command responds with content
about the help for the command.

What might have gotten broken to cause this? I DID use alternatives
ONCE on the system to set the MTA to postfix.

Ah. And

Meanwhile something is broken with alternatives. I get no response,

I don't think so, the printers work outside of wineAnd wine can find
them to put them in its configuration files. Its just that the
application I'm running under wine has the printer menus greyed out.

abiword in F13/F14

2010-12-15 Thread Ranjan Maitra
Hi,

For a long time for me, abiword has not displayed .doc and .docx
documents properly. Specifically, it drops the space in the Table and
the formatting so that all letters come one after the other. Does
anyone have a solution to this problem. I thought there was something
wrong with the documents I was trying to read, but this seems to be the
case for all documents now.

Best wishes,
Ranjan

When you say sound does not work, do you mean you can't get sound to be
heard from any source, CD, web, etc.

What kernel are you using? A recent kernel upgrade made swound work fo

The OP should unplug the device and then plug it back in again. Then tail the
dmesg log and it will show what device was created for the USB Modem. If no
message was created, then you have more work to do, like finding an appropriate
driver for your device.

That's because the drivers actually change the /dev address. It'll
be in either dmesg or /var/log/messages.

Use the --set option rather than --config. Something like:

alternatives --set mta /usr/sbin/sendmail.postfix

Or, do as Jason suggested and simply remove the sendmail package and
ensure postfix is the only MTA installed.

What file system is used on the drive?

If it's Ext3, there's the e2label command.

If it's FAT, you have to assign a Windows-like drive letter, then use
the DOS/FAT drive labelling commands to label the drive. Though, the
simplest solution, if you can plug it into a Windows box, is to do so,
and right-click and rename the drive.

It irks me, seeing how Gnome plays so heavily upon using the name of the
drive as a mount point, that we have to go through all these shenanigans
to rename a drive, when Windows users have it so easy. Sure, make us
type in a root password to allow the change, but let us right-click on a
drive and rename it.

dmesg is probably the easiest. Plug in a usb device, and type "dmesg:tail"
Like this:

# dmesg|tail
scsi 3:0:0:0: Direct-Access Kingston DataTraveler G2 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2

  sdb: sdb1 sdb2 < sdb5 >

Or use "lsusb".

Above you've quoted your reverse look-up zone, which looks okay. It's
the forward zone that should have an A record for the nameserver (NS)
record.

Your reverse zone (above) only needs records for the name (singular) to
be used for each IP. The forward records list all host names, and say
what IP they have.

Your master file (forward records) should be something like this
(below), based on what I can see of your reverse file, though put the
right IP address for your name server for the ns1 hostname:

$TTL86400
@ IN SOA ns1.colo-perrys.com.
hostmaster.colo-perrys.com. (
 2010121301 ; Serial
 28800 ; Refresh
 14400 ; Retry
 360; Expire
 86400 ); Minimum
IN NS ns1.colo-perrys.com.
IN A 100

coloIN A 100
dadsoffice IN A 2
Dave-PC IN A 4
Linksys-WAP54G IN A 20
mobile1 IN A 9
ns1 IN A 100
unclecarl IN A 10

And if you're going the whole hog of running a full LAN, with mail, you
probably should put an MX record in there for your LAN mail server, too.

Les, you might get more interest (and possibly more insight) by posting
these questions to the Evolution list
(http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/evolution-list). Several of the
developers hang out there and have been known to answer questions like
this. Since Evo is a Gnome app and not limited to Fedora (in fact my
guess is that most of the Evo list members use Ubuntu) your audience
will be larger and more focussed.

The usual answer is give the drive a name/label, appropriate to the file
system on it (ext3, FAT, whatever).

IIRC the most accurate measurement of any quantity in nature is that of
the fine structure constant with 12 significant digits, so one really
doesn't usually need much precision.

Good luck in getting GPS to work without relativity. Or your computer
without quantum mechanics; you need it to get a reasonable description
of semiconductors (e.g. transistors) or lasers (your cdrom drive).

But this discussion is really OT to this list.

Firewall blocking the port used by CUPS? It'd need to be open both
ways. Not that I use Wine, but that's the first thing that springs to
mind. It not finding a printer, so not offering any options about it.

bz 613886 on fedora 14

2010-12-15 Thread AJ Hettema
hi all,

it seems that I have the problem described in bugzilla 613886 on fed14. I
have fed14-x86_64 installed on my laptop in a very basic way and I have some
virtual machines configured as well. But, once I fire up virt-manager the
/var/log/messages file is filling up with errors. When I run virsh iface
list it's not showing me any interface on the system. However, I do have
some vm's configured and running on the system and they do have network
connectivity.

It's not that my system is not working, it's just very anoying I always need
to use virt-manager rather then virsh and even worse, my log file is filling
up with useless messages.

Some help would be very much appreciated.

kind regards

Jouk Hettema

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has
taken place.

It shouldn't really be a problem. But look through the named.conf file,
and the "man named.conf" information, and start removing options that
configure "ipv6".

I'd make a wild guess that you're having problems because you do have
ipv6 networking partially running, rather than properly running or fully
disabled.

Caution: I am on Fedora 14.
I can't remember if the following is true for Fedora 12.
I believe the following is true for Fedora 13.

When the disk is on and plugged in, does an entry for it appear in
ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid

What I have done is the following:
1) In my /etc/fstab I have
(following is all one line, forgive the line wrap)
UUID=90de18a5-489b-40bd-85a4-9a2ff3a15d81 /media/wd  ext2   noauto
0 0

2) When I turn on my USB disk, the following appears:
   ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/90de*
rsew...@rsewill:~ <2:6> $ ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/90de*
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 10 Dec 15 01:42
/dev/disk/by-uuid/90de18a5-489b-40bd-85a4-9a2ff3a15d81 -> ../../sdf1

It appears I can use UUID=name where name is found in /dev/disk/by-uuid
in my /etc/fstab file.

3) I do, sudo mount /media/wd
Please note: I have my /etc/sudoers file set up so I can do
   sudo mount
As root, one edits the /etc/sudoers file using the visudo command
to set up what user can do what with the sudo command.

Similarly, I believe I can use LABEL=label for the disk if it appears in
/dev/disk/by-label. I have a walkman which I have labeled, WALKMAN.
My fstab entry for it is as follows:
(following is all one line, forgive the line wrap)
LABEL=WALKMAN   /media/walkman   vfat
noauto,user 0 0

The entry, when the walkman is plugged in, in /dev/disk/by-label is
rsew...@rsewill:~ <2:11> $ ls -l /dev/disk/by-label/WALKMAN
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 10 Dec 15 01:47 /dev/disk/by-label/WALKMAN ->
../../sdg1

I can mount my walkman, as a normal user, because of the "user" option
in the /etc/fstab file.
mount /media/walkman

I use "noauto" or "noauto, user" so I can control when the device is
mounted. I mount these devices manually.

Please see "man 8 mount" for the definitions of these options,
noauto, user, defaults.

I assume, since you say you want it mounted automatically,
and I assume at boot time, you will not want the "noauto" option.

Would you, instead, use the "defaults" option instead of "noauto"?

If the device is not turned on during boot, with the "defaults" option,
I'm not sure what will happen. I expect the system to wait a long time
and/or hang waiting for the device to appear.

file system mount and umount timestamps?

2010-12-15 Thread gerrynix
I get 'last mounted' time from the super block using 'tune2fs -l' although
there
are likely other ways such as dumpe2fs. . . I have not found how to determine
the 'last umount' timestamp. I suppose it registers somewhere. I've dug and
googled but have 'nada' for my efforts. Any ideas/knowledge are welcomed. . .
Thnx
