Well, as Tim & I have saidyou can't mount an Audio CD.

As soon as I start "Sound Juicer" it reads the track names and I can
either Play it or Extract the tracks.

My system is an F15 system with both GNOME and KDE installed. I
normally only use KDE. I don't have XFCE installed at the moment...so I
can't test that for you.

On the computer that the printer is directly plugged into, that computer
is configured as the printer server. It does the driving for the
printer, and makes itself available to the network.

The clients should automatically find the server, without you doing
anything, at all, to the CUPS configuration on the client. And it'll
make that printer available to any program that wants to print.

Theoretically, all you need to do to get it to work is:

1. Set up the server so that it can do its own printing (get the right
printer driver, test print through CUPS, test print through any program
that prints its output). Then configure its CUPS server to share itself
to the LAN.

2. Set up the server's firewall so that it can act as a CUPS *server*
(probably called IPP, for internet printing protocol, in your firewall
configuration).

3. Set up your client's firewall so they can be a CUPS *client* (again,
it may be called IPP).

I don't know if, since the last time I set up network printing, there's
any options that need setting with SELinux configuration, as well.
There didn't used to be.

For what it's worth, audio CDs cannot be mounted, they don't have a file
system on them. It's just a stream of encoded data with a table of
contents at the start of the disc.

What can happen, though, is that your desktop, or file manager, or other
utility, can recognise that an inserted disc is an audio CD and give you
an interface for accessing the disc as if it were mounted.

So, you're not going to find it "mounted" and you may need to look for a
compact disc digital audio (CDDA) handler plug-in (depending on whether
your software is supposed to work with one, or has the feature built
in).

To be completely clear. cups should be running on the printer clients but no
running of configuration
software such as system-config-printer should be done on the clients.

No, I understand that. My question was, if I had some software that
used GTK1, which I use, and would not like to spend time writing
for GTK2, would I still be able to compile using GTK2 or GTK3? Is GTK3/2
a superset of GTK1?

To find a list of such programs you can run:

Please note that the list of GTK1 programs is very small. Briefly
looking at the list looks like it is all dead software.

You're welcome to become a package maintainer and be the package owner

Audio CDs not mounting

I'm using F14 with XFCE. Until recently, all went well. Last week, I

I posted this on the fedoraforum and got suggestions of hardware

printers are on the same LAN.
Not clear what you mean by saying that printer must be configured only
on the attached machine: I understand that it should be configured also
on the remote machine (or you mean that it should be left as Raw printer??)

This isn't related to your problem, but I see you have gone to a lot of
trouble to build specific iptables rules; perhaps an `iptables -P INPUT
DROP` is in order?

OK! but this does not explain why:

1- why system-config-samba is unable to offer a possibility to add a
printer.

2- why I get this kind of message:

 "PolKit.NotAuthorizedException.org.fedoraproject.config.firewall.auth:"

and how to configure my machine to be able *as root* to access any
services I need!

BTW, it seems that the message is not complete: see the ":" at the end
which could indicate some explanations.

There are 2 secrets that you need to be aware of with printer browsing.
Only configure the printer on the machine to which it is attached (the
server)
Browsing only works if the printers are on the same LAN

Sounds like JUST the info I was looking for. I'm still a little puzzled as to
how/why xinetd would look to LDAP at all if PAM isn't telling it to. From
/etc/nsswitch.conf:

passwd: files ldap
shadow: files ldap
group: files ldap

Since the answer is found in "files" /etc/passwd (and /etc/group), what makes it
call nss_ldap at all?

Thanks VERY much!

The xinetd daemon doesn't link with libpam, so I doubt it's an issue. I
think it's more likely that, because supplemental group membership is
retrieved from all available sources, xinetd is attempting to determine
which of the groups you've defined in the directory server the user is a
member of.

If that is indeed what's happening, then you'll want to look into
adjusting the value of the "nss_initgroups_ignoreusers" in nss_ldap's
configuration file.

I insert the correct driver, but at a certain step when verifying
printer, I get the message that printer is not available!!
Firewall is disabled on all network machines.
What is the starting point to decode the problem (Printer is a HP2350
all in one)?? Same printer with same driver is working fine if directed
connected to computer

[389-users] Crashing

2011-08-05 Thread Wendt, Trevor
Hello all,

Need some help with tuning and crash debugging. We're running
Fedora-Directory/1.0.4 B2006.312.1539. The problem is on our "Dedicated
Consumer" machine running on RHEL 5. We have over ~150,000 users authenticating
against our FDS systems. System resources are not a problem (~.39 load, free
memory, 92k swap)

For months, the system is solid without any issues then we seem to get a large
spike in traffic and FDS crashes. I run Monit so the service is restarted
automatically but I cannot figure out why the service keeps crashing.

FDS was setup and tuned based off:
http://directory.fedoraproject.org/wiki/Performance_Tuning#Linux

I have reviewed http://directory.fedoraproject.org/wiki/FAQ#Debugging_Crashes
as well, but some of that is over my head. I have turned buffering off and
increased the logging level in the LDAP config.

Here is our "monitor" script output:

We have talked about moving to the latest 389 Directory packages and I have a
migration process tested out so it's a matter of getting the OK and time but I
doubt the upgrade will solve our crashing problem. It seems to me we are
hitting some limits that just haven't been accounted for yet and that is where
I need help.

Any suggestions on how to proceed with stopping these crashes is welcomed!
Thanks for reading.

How about stuff that is written in GTK1? How would we compile these?

Perhaps true, but that does not mean that it should be used even when
other (possibly) unneeded leaner options are available. (Which, based
on your e-mail, seems to suggest may not be, for much longer.)

(Btw, I view "resource-hungry" in relative terms. Even the fastest
processors can do better with more efficient and smarter composed
code.)

Many thanks again, and best wishes,

I won't get in to whether you can do it or not because:
GTK1 is no longer actively maintained. It is on the chopping block to be
removed from Fedora soon. You also have to worry about security holes
that will go unpatched.

Define "resource-hungry" as that could be used subjectively. GTK2 is no
more "resource-hungry" than any other UI toolkit.

writing system tray plugin using GTK1?

2011-08-05 Thread Ranjan Maitra
Hi,

I have been wanting to write a simple system tray plugin using GTK1. Is
it possible? Or am I constrained with using the more resource-hungry
GTK2?

The keyword is simple: I am open to giving up some features, but
inability to do anything would of course defeat the purpose.

Many thanks for any help and pointers or even examples you are able to
provide!

Best wishes,
Ranjan

Intel 4965AGN Standard "N" update

2011-08-05 Thread Lawrence E Graves
Just inquiring as to whether or not if there is going to be an update to
the 4965AGN wifi card to utilize the new Standard "N". I have the
Overdrive Pro which has the new "N" and my 4965AGN will not connect and
I believe it is because the Draft N is not compatible with the new
Standard. I stand to be corrected. Just asking someone to look into this
problem I am having. I have contacted Sierra Wireless and they have
assured me that their device is backward compatible so I am looking
further for answer. I have purchased 2 new 4965AGN with no success in
connecting to my Overdrive Pro. Please advise.

check the contents, if they contains something like ESSID= they are
created from wireless networks, they could be created too with other
options of Network Manager, like VPN, even Wired Networks if you change

Thank you for answering.

If I cancel the window with this message, nothing happens.

> Alternatively you can open up a terminal, became root with su then
> system-config-samba

This works, but poorly: I can add a shares, but only a directory, not a
printer for instance..

Now I have new problems: I tried to use swat. Installed everything,
configure everything (xinetd...) but I cannot connect to swat:

- - with localhost:901, firefox is searching for localhost.com (and fails)

- -with "hostname":901, firefox is searching for hostname.com (and faisl)

- -with IP:901, I get a message: "connection has been reset... try
again..." and so on.

The port 901 is open according to system-config-firewall (which I cannot
access through System>Admin (like system-config-samba...)

How can I get rid off these "stupid" security setting which are set in a
such a way that you cannot configure anything: they block anything if
you ask for samba, firewall, etc. instead of asking for root password,
and you cannot graphically login as root and give message which
cannot be understand.

I stopped Selinux, but nothing has changed up to now.

Using f14

system-config-samba

Bonjour,

I try to use "system-config-samba" and I cannot because I get a quite
cryptic message:

Erreur d'autorisation

L'autorisation demandée pour
« org.fedoraproject.config.samba.configure » n'a pas pu être obtenue.
L'application va maintenant se fermer.

I try to translate:

Authentication error:

The permission asked for "org.fedoraproject.config.samba.configure" was
not given. The application is going to shut down now.

What does this mean? How to solve the problem?

As a matter of fact, I would observe that messages should be given to
help people not to confuse them and let them with no clue on how to
solve their problems...

Thanks for answering.

It was a good WAG since linksys and mycloud do suggest SSID names.
Anyway, if this is on a laptop, I don't think that you'd have to have

Ooops, I have no WLAN access (connection to the router is available by LAN)!

You mentioned that you have a GeForce 7300 card.
All GeForce 7300 (GT,GS,LE,SE and PCIe or AGP) cards have "3D hardware
acceleration". They should be recognized as such when booting F15.
What does 'lspci -d 10de:' say.

You are running the Nvidia driver. This requires a 'nomodeset' entry
in the kernel line of /boot/grub/grub.conf (if I remember correctly).
To switch to the nouveau driver you have to disable the nvidia driver.
Have you checked if the 'nomodeset' entry has been removed.

Also have a look at
system settings->system info->graphics->forced fallback mode->on/off

They look like SSIDs rather than devices.
