I have an ancient box still running Fedora 10. I just downloaded Firefox 6.0.2 (the .tar.bz2) from the Firefox page and unpacked it over whatever was the version I had. Works flawlessly, fwiw. But I do get your point, as F14 is still a supported release. FC -- "Si, yo creo en los objetos. Inclusive más que en los seres humanos. Creo que son más fieles ¿no?. RaLink 5370 USB Wifi Dongle
The WiFi in my laptop gave up the ghost. Doesn't matter what card I put in the mini PCIe slot, the system doesn't think anything is there. So, I bought one of those "new" $7 Wifi dongles for the USB port. Surprisingly small! 802.11n capable as well! The problem? It appears in the lsusb list: > Bus 001 Device 007: ID 148f:5370 Ralink Technology, Corp. But, nothing appears as a Wifi Device. One Wifi email list suggested that it would be supported by the rt2x00 driver, but modprobing that driver does not recognize the device. The RaLink site has 2 drivers that *should* support it: rt2870usb and rt2870sta. I found that RPMFusion packages version 2.4.0 of the rt2870 driver, but there is no entry for the 148f:5370, so no network device gets created. Not even when I add an entry for it to: /lib/modules/2.6.25.14-96.fc14.x86_64/modules.usbmap The final step I tried was to download the 2.5.0.2 driver from RaLink, and build it locally. It builds, but it doesn't build an installable kernel module: > # insmod rt5370sta.ko > insmod: error inserting 'rt5370sta.ko': -1 Unknown symbol in module Anyone have one of these running in their system yet? fc 14, evolution 2.32.0 my inbox has suddenly started showing the same piece of mail regardless of which message I try to open. the message line appears ok, but when i click to open it I get the same piece of junk mail. this applies to all but the last message i received. i recently rolled back fc15 to fc14 because I did not like the absence of familiar tools. I had migrated evolution to fc15, and since I reinstalled fc14 I have had very slow loading of evolution. Any idea what is wrong? I would have guessed that it was a Network Manager bug(s): - if it cannot be *the* Network Manager, it shouldn't write to /etc/resolv.conf - if it cannot update /etc/resolv.conf, it should 1) complain in some noticable way (it currently logs this in /var/log/messages, but that isn't very visible, especially considering the amount of other spew it puts in there) 2) not show status as hunky dorry. | If setroubleshoot was running you would see a message in | /var/log/messages about selinux preventing some access, you should | also see the setroubleshoot blob down the bottom of the screen and if | you move your mouse to the bottom right hand corner, you should see a | menu appear and have the "CheckEngineLight" logo for setroubleshoot. Re: LXDE is an acceptable substitute for Gnome 2
On Thu, 15 Sep 2011 12:28:54 +0100 Pedro Francisco wrote: > Why LXDE instead of XFCE? Just curious... The first time I tried XFCE, the rat and the ugly font logo, the icons, all the GUI environment was looking cheap & somewhat childish. I was not found of the file browser, the email clients (claws) and the terminal, etc - of course, this is 100% subjective, because it's only a matter of taste, and first impression. XFCE made me feel the poor Gnome2 brother (it was before Gnome3), and I am not versed in DE customization. Then I tried LXDE. From the first second, I liked what I saw on my screen. That was minimalist, modern and neutral. I liked the file manager (pcmanfm) and the default mail client (sylpheed) at once. I probably spent more time learning how to configure LXDE, than I would, if I had kept using XFCE, but I am happy now. I am affected by a panel bug: it crashes when I use FF (there no current LXDE panel maintainer), thank to Christoph Wickert on Fedora, I found a workaround editing the open box configuration file. The Fedora LXDE Spin is also really great (if not the best spin) for my taste. It's neutral and it has a good balance of easiness and completeness. Each new release add something great, and I am sensitive to these details. Check the new Yum Extender on F-15! http://www.yum-extender.org/cms/ Most of the people fall back to XFCE. I think they are being conservative. There is probably more GUI options in XFCE - it supports transparency, and the development might in a better state (it's an older project) than LXDE? Well, I am mainly talking about details here (and those can be changed), but I am an end user. Ideally, I would rather use a CLI than GUI environment, but the trade off between the learning curve vs. the self-satisfaction is too great for my usage of a computer. That's what LXDE and possibly XFCE are satisfactory - they give me impression (still subjective) of a relative freedom using a GUI. I dislike (as in "loath") OSX and Windows for the opposite reason. As for Gnome3 and Unity, it has became the same: The users must adapt to the DE. It's not anymore a set of tools put together to help him, it's a complete environment designed for him. Firefox 6 crashes with (most recent) Java
The problem listed in the subject line seems to be widespread. Svereal people report this problem on various discussion lists. As soon as Firefox tries to start a plugin, it breaks down with a message "this is embarrasing" etc. I have not yet found any fix that seems to work. I tried to install Firefox 5 instead of 6 to see if the problem is a ver. 6 problem, but now it does not pick up the Java plugin (does not appear in the Tools/Add-ons list.) So it cannot be enabled. I have created a symlink to usr/java/jre1.6.0._27/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so, both in /opt and (created by myself) /opt/plugins. I am unimpressed with all this "tablet" look and feel, and found that it took me longer to find the applications that I wanted to run than with the previous environment. There seemed to be little ability to modify the environment (without resorting to editing system files to accomplish things like smaller desktop icons...), navigation seemed clumsy and circuitous, and it's unclear if this brings F15 any closer to more universal acceptance than with the previous Gnome 2 desktop. You may not need the Suse libtdl3 package. I found the source spec file and took a look. It's just libtool which is already in fedora. I think the package you need is: libtool-ltdl Of course it is the current stable version, 2.4. The Suse package is called libltdl3, spec file it's using libtool version 1.5..26, which is the latest suse reference I can find, and is does provide a libltdl.so.3 soname. libltdl.so under fedora provides a 7 soversion... If the Fedora version doesn't work and the Suse version does then perhaps the version in Fedora is too new? If that's the case I doubt that the current maintainer for libtool would want to provide a compat package but if it's needed I could come up with one and host it on fedorapeople.org. Mozilla software, as part of their heritage maintain their own certificate store and thus would have to be updated separately. That said, I believe I have seen instances where you delete a trusted root certificate and the first time, it remains in the database but not trusted and the second time you delete it, it actually finally removes it. I may be confusing that operation with Apple's Keychain Access behavior though... I don't know if gtkpod has any interest in managing files on an iPod but you really don't need it to for things like PDF's since they don't need to mesh into the iTunes.db - they are just files copied onto the IOS device. Copying files to your IOS device should be as simple as connecting it to your Linux box and using a file manager or the command line to copy files. > > #1 - time to update your Fedora. OK - well that sort of means that you are using a web browser with known exploits (trusts root certificates that are now well known not to be trusted) - and specifically using an installation that will never get another security update ever. On top of that, it's likely that your computer will not have a chance to identify any iPad you connect to it since the device ID is not likely to be in a database that is now almost a year old and won't change unless you start manually maintaining it... good luck with that.
