Thanks Frank At least I can download 3.4.6-2 now... But, I still wonder
why the downgrade skips over it ?

kernel-headers downgrade failure

2012-08-02 Thread Ed Greshko
Today the kernel was updated to 3.5.0-2. However, this has caused a breakage
in compiling the VirtualBox Guest Additions.

So, I wanted to go back to 3.4.6-2 and downgrade kernel-headers.

I was under the impression that "yum downgrade" would result in going back on
version. But, the downgrade resulted in installing kernel-headers-3.3.4-5 and
I could not find the kernel-headers-3.4.6-2 package anywhere.

I don't think this is "normal" but don't know the best wait to report the
problem. Of course I'll report the breakage in 3.5.0-2 but how about the
missing kernel-headers-3.4.6-2 ?

boot: linux text => "Could not find kernel image: linux"

2012-08-02 Thread Dave Burns
Me confused. I want to try booting the FC17 install disk in lowres or
text mode. To do this, apparently I should enter "linux lowres" or
"linux text" at the "boot prompt".

The fc17 install guide
(http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/17/html/Installation_Guide/ap-admin-options.html)
says, "To use boot options, enter linux option at the boot: prompt. To
access the boot: prompt on a system that displays a graphical boot
screen, press the Esc key while the graphical boot screen is
displayed. "

If I hit esc before the "fedora 17 will boot in 10 seconds" screen, or
while that is visible, I get what seems like a boot prompt - at the
top of the screen it says "boot:" and I am able to type in "linux
text". But when I hit enter, it replies "Could not find kernel image:
linux".

If I hit esc later than that, during the pretty screen with the line
crawling along the bottom, it just switches from that view to the log
from starting daemons.

Can someone please tell me how to get into text mode? What did I do wrong?
thanks,
TDB

The 2 other ones, I just cannot do it, For example, Character panel,

I have the impression that I installed the same relevant packages on
all the 3 machines:

On 1)
nautilus-extensions-3.2.1-2.fc16.x86_64
gnome-shell-extension-user-theme-3.2.3-2.fc16.noarch
gnome-shell-extension-alternate-tab-3.2.3-2.fc16.noarch
gnome-shell-extension-common-3.2.3-2.fc16.noarch

on 2) (and 3))

gnome-shell-extension-user-theme-3.2.3-2.fc16.noarch
gnome-shell-extension-alternate-tab-3.2.3-2.fc16.noarch

gnome-shell-extension-systemMonitor-3.2.3-2.fc16.noarch
gnome-shell-extension-drive-menu-3.2.3-2.fc16.noarch
gnome-shell-extension-places-menu-3.2.3-2.fc16.noarch

Thus, I do not know how to debug the issues.
Would you help?

Thank.

I installed by going to that link in Firefox and clicking the On
toggle. I didn't have any issues installing it with that method, but I
would like a CLI way to install the extensions though.

If I remember all correctly, there were two mainly independend issues
with C1E in Linux, one which is processor-related, and one
BIOS-related. Processor-bugs are adressed by loading fixes via
microcode updates at boot-time. Check your dmesg output if this is the
case with your CPU. There should be something like that (laptop with i5 cpu):

[root@wildsau ~]# dmesg | grep microcode
microcode: CPU0 sig=0x20655, pf=0x10, revision=0x2
microcode: CPU0 updated to revision 0x3, date = 2011-09-01
microcode: CPU1 sig=0x20655, pf=0x10, revision=0x2
microcode: CPU1 updated to revision 0x3, date = 2011-09-01
microcode: CPU2 sig=0x20655, pf=0x10, revision=0x2
microcode: CPU2 updated to revision 0x3, date = 2011-09-01
microcode: CPU3 sig=0x20655, pf=0x10, revision=0x2
microcode: CPU3 updated to revision 0x3, date = 2011-09-01
microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.00 , Peter
Oruba

So, my AMD 920 cpu is not only slow, it has also some errata incompatible
with Fedora. Nice :D

Nearly all CPUs have errata :-)

The problem you encounter is not a Fedora one, it's most likely a
BIOS-problem, or the E400 routines in the kernel doesn't get triggered
by your hardware. It's impossible for me to see where the problem
finally originates in your case. The AMD people are generally cute ones and
really
interested in such thing, so if you care to dig into this further, you
could consider mailing Borislav Petkov directly
(borislav.pet...@amd.com).

If I remember that right, there was a fix pending around april/may
2011 for this, and a quick look into process.c shows that the E400
case is taken care of by the kernel. Look into your dmesg output and
boot.log (and other logfiles: /var/log/messages etc.) for "AMD E400
aware idle routine" or something similar/related.

I believe the message is this:

[0.002484] using AMD E400 aware idle routine

This is on a machine that comes up with an "AMD Processor model unknown"
message from "cat /proc/cpuinfo" (it's a Shuttle FN78S mobo and no, I
can't recall the CPU I stuffed into it other than it's a dual-core AMD
in an AM2 socket).

Junk mail setting are set mail account by mail account. Go to
Edit/Preferences and edit each account listed in the "Mail Accounts"
section. It's on the "Receiving Options" tab when you select and
account and click "edit."

When I right-click on a mail messages I can mark it as spam but that's
it (for spam, that is). I don't recall ever seeing where I can adjust
settings from there. It may have been there and I just never noticed.
I don't see it now.

enabliing junk mail in evolution

2012-08-02 Thread Aaron Konstam
I have ben using junk mail processing in evolution since it appeared in
RedHat and/or Fedora Linux. I have never before been unable to enable
junk mail processing. But now in F17 it is not working for me. Below are
the instructions from the evolution help to enable Junk mail
processing.
But when I right click on a message there is no Junk Mail Settings
option. Any ideas out there other than ask the evolution list which I
will do if I get frustrated enough?

Enabling or Disabling Your Junk Mail List
 1. Right-click on a message and select the Junk Mail
Settingsoption.

 2. Specify whether you wish to Enable or Disable junk mail
handling.

 3. Click on the OK button.

I just came across this message after having lived with automount (of my
NFS4 shares) not working on my F17 box for several weeks. Sure enough,
opening this port on my server's firewall fixed the problem. But, why
should this be required for NFS4? Automounting in Fedora 16 clients
certainly doesn't require it.

I've filed bug 845313, which hopefully will yield a definitive answer.

In some jurisdictions, this is assumed to be the case (with respect to work
conducted for the employer / client) unless your contract / employment
agreement explicitly retains rights.

Because in some jurisdictions, these clauses were found to be unenforceable in
employment agreements (as they pertained to work produced that was not for the
employer).

Surely wise advice. Also sage advice - consult a lawyer if you have doubts

And if they do, it's generally the entity "distributing" the infringing
material who bears the bulk of the liability. Which is why many projects
(including the kernel) go to great lengths to establish attribution and do
their due diligence to ensure that contributed code is not encumbered.

As one who studies laws, and the abuse of political power, I wouldn't
worry about this; there is absolutely nothing MS can do - it's just a
mere scare tactic.

My take on these is that the process is used as the punishment; Guilt be

as far as I understand from this quote, this is not the compiler
license, but is (regardless of where it is written) the license of
those bunches of code. But it's not important, I'll find and read more
myself now that I have a precise reference, thanks!

Re: [389-users] dirsrv-admin startup issues with SSL/TLS configuration [solved]

2012-08-02 Thread Arnold Werschky
This issue was solved with a total reinstall. I believe I had messed up
the configuration somehow with trying to install multiple times.

In addition, the script should not be corrected, as it worked just fine.

Thank you very much for your assistance, and patience.

Re: was criminal use of linux [not] -now: ownership

True, unless:

  1. You contractually grant it to another. It's quite common to either
take contracts or sign employment agreements that grant everything
you produce for a client or employer as a "work for hire".

  2. It is also quite common to sign an agreement, usually as a clause in
the general contract or employment agreement, that you will cooperate
in the transfer of any patents awarded in the course of your work to
  your contractor or employer.

> Where is it stated that Micros[hi]t owns C++? when did this happen?

Absolutely bogus. C++ was developed by Bjarne Stroustrup while at BTL.

It's more common that linking in copyrighted binaries will contaminate your
code. This has not, however, been a common restriction since the GNU
library wars.

This used to be a common restrictive clause in employment contracts.
I haven't seen such tried in a mort of years. HOWEVER, make sure not
to sign any such agreement, and don't ever use company resources or time
to do any development you want to keep. (And, of course, never use any
information you could only have gotten from your employer or contractee.)

Only if you signed an agreement stating such.

You do, unless you release ownership.

None of the snippets that are unencumbered are in trouble, _unless_ they
violate a copyright.

Not unless and until they actually take action. There's no advantage to
Microsoft in actually providing evidence of what they believe has been
infringed. If they do so, then developers can take steps to rewrite
and remove the offending code. If they don't, everything is suspect
of being tainted, and (they can hope) corporations are leery of using
potentially tainted code without indemnification.

No. This is a test VM that hasn't been doing much of anything...and certainly
no downloading. As a matter of fact, I'd not even used firefox on it.

So, somewhere along the way an install process put in the definitions. I

As regards how to copy&paste in a console without gpm, you can try
shell tricks like:

the_command_which_prints_something_you_want | grep more_or_less_the_good_part
>>/etc/crypttab

then you only have to delete the garbage from /etc/crypttab and rearrange
things (with a text editor).

I can imagine how it might get there, if you downloaded such a file, at

If I remember all correctly, there were two mainly independend issues
with C1E in Linux, one which is processor-related, and one
BIOS-related. Processor-bugs are adressed by loading fixes via
microcode updates at boot-time. Check your dmesg output if this is the
case with your CPU. There should be something like that (laptop with i5 cpu):

[root@wildsau ~]# dmesg | grep microcode
microcode: CPU0 sig=0x20655, pf=0x10, revision=0x2
microcode: CPU0 updated to revision 0x3, date = 2011-09-01

> So, my AMD 920 cpu is not only slow, it has also some errata incompatible

This is the from the Visual C++ Express 2010 license:
'2. ADDITIONAL LICENSING REQUIREMENTS AND/OR USE RIGHTS.
Distributable Code. The software contains code that you are permitted
to distribute in programs you develop if you comply with the terms
below.
'a. Right to Use and Distribute. The code and text files listed below
are “Distributable Code...'

MS don't really apply many restrictions on how you distribute those
components, beyond only for use on Windows (and the usual preserve
copyright notices, trademarks etc.). In the same way binaries that
link GPL or LGPL need to comply with those licenses. In days gone past
I remember seeing free versions of compilers that prohibited
commercial distribution of compiled code, but it no longer seems
common practice. (And note, that's not based on claiming ownership of
the original code, it is instead dependent on the licence by which you
use the compiler to generate output.)

Commission work (which includes being employed to create code) belongs
to the person or organisation doing the commissioning. Companies
claiming ownership of work done outside working hours is pretty
controversial, but employees in that situation need to be careful
about not using work resources to do it which can muddy the situation.

Code comparisons aren't very relevant to patent claims. MS are
essentially fishing. If there are patents infringed and MS said which
ones then they could be worked around or dropped as necessary.

As one who studies laws, and the abuse of political power, I wouldn't worry
about this; there is absolutely nothing MS can do - it's just a mere scare
tactic.

Richard, please do not see this as a personal criticism, but if that was indeed
the case, then would not the legal departments of the affected companies
(especially Oracle, who most likely has a legal war machine easily on par with
MS) have dismissed it rather than letting the company succumb to the demands?

The problem is related to the APIC timer interrupt, the CPU goes into enhanced
halt state (C1E) but is not able to wake up. See AMD erratum #400 and what
acpi_skip_timer_override actually does. See also
/arch/x86/kernel/process.c.

My personally advice is that you don't use C1E at all, but if you like
to, acpi_skip_timer_override will most probably fix it for you.

Have you tried?

Yes, I have tried and it does work.
So, this is a processor bug? I would expect that Linux should detect
these automatically...

So, my AMD 920 cpu is not only slow, it has also some errata
incompatible with Fedora. Nice :D

Thank you for pointing to acpi_skip_timer_override option...

was criminal use of linux [not] -now: ownership

2012-08-02 Thread Roger
Er... nobody can take ownership over work that you have written, Your
work is your own, regardless of whether they own the language you write
it in or not. Where is it stated that Micros[hi]t owns C++? when did
this happen? You can't own something in the free domain? This is like
saying that I own English and you can't use it unless I say so - it's
stupid and ridiculous.

Indeed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%2B%2B C++ has nothing to do with
Microsoft. Even in C#, which they developed and where they own key
components of the run-time, code you write belongs to you (though
licensing of compiled binaries can be interesting depending on your
compiler license - in exactly the same way some people call GPL
infectious).

Thanks Richard.
I did see something about Microsoft owning or making a claim on
ownership C++ in the av...@avaaz.org site who were raising awareness of
the group of corporate nasties trying to change US political thinking.
They had something like 200,000 responses to that event, but I do not
know the results.
http://www.avaaz.org/en/highlights.php , a like group trying to get
support for absolute web control. This is the second such attempt I've
seen. I gave support to the first.

If I can find it all again I'll post the url. I too thought it was
stupid and didn't take much notice when I read it but it made me think,
at the time, what if they own if, case, while and do, etc. This is why I
remembered the article.

Ad for ownership, I think it depends on circumstances. I have heard
instances of when one writes a work while employed by or under contract
to a company then they do not own their work, the company does, even if
the work was done on unpaid holidays or at home during unpaid after hours.

If, say a programmer or developer is employed by a company or
organisation and they write code and say develop a site in their own
time, using open source applications, and contribute the whole thing to
Open source or under GPL, etc, can the company/organisation stake a claim?

Also, if a programmer writes code snippets and contributes snippets to a
larger unit, for instance, a kernel or app. From the above comment, he
still owns the code snippet.
If a vast number of snippets from a vast number of coders are donated
free of encumbrance to enhance a kernel or app, how does that make the
whole (Linux) responsible for copyright violation when no one entity
owns it?

I'm probably waffling on here but it seems that there's more going on
under the carpet than we may be aware of with MS. Mentioning over 200
instances yet I see no one discussing or displaying code comparisons to
show that it is true. Surely it is incumbent on the complaintant to
provide proof.

Ok.

Boot with "acpi_skip_timer_override" and C1E turned on in BIOS.

OK

When you go to "System Settings->File Associations" AbiWord is at the top of
the list of "Application Preference Order"?

I can recreate your issue if I move Firefox to the top and hit apply.
If AbiWord is a the top. Why not move it, hit Apply, then move it back, and
hit Apply.
