AFAIK:

* Some details of the internal design of the graphics chip can be reverse-
engineered much more easily by the competitor company, if the driver source is
available up-front.

* There may also be copyright&patent issues of the source code that prevent it
from becoming open source, even if the company wanted to release it.

This is pretty obvious for both nVidia and ATI, which keep the drivers closed-
source, in contrast to Intel, which has open drivers but generally inferior
hardware design. nVidia and ATI have nothing serious to learn from Intel's
design, so to speak. ATI eventually provides the chip specs for the previous-
generation chips, which are old enough to be not relevant for their current
products (and they release the specs, not the source code itself, I guess due
to copyright issues).

HTH, :-)

Ah, awesome. I've used fvwm for years in the past. Can't believe gnome
hasn't made enough progress that the simplistic fvwm would even be a
contender.

Are we fedora users missing out on something big with all the
canonical desktop hype?

I never liked downloadhelper. It is what w$ndows is to Fedora. An ugly
bloat for the mass. From the web page, the animated icons, to the
intrusive pre-sets (it creates a dir in your /home without even
asking...).

You could try flashgot.
http://flashgot.net/
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flashgot/
you can download everything, or a single file, at different bit rates,
from a right click. It's from Maone, the dev. of the NoScript add-on.

almost ten years." (True) If they treat me the way they'd like to be
treated during a call, this will be the easiest call they'll have all

doing, I'll be their worst nightmare. Then I'll tell them that I'm
running Linux, not Windows, and that all I need from them is specific
information. If they'll tell me what info they need, I'll know where to
find it and tell them what I see. (Sometimes the only way to get a chat
session started is to pretend I'm using Windows, but I'm careful to
correct that as quickly as possible.)

More often than you'd expect, things go smoothly after that. Once in a

irrelevant, and I end up discussing my issue with their supervisor.

e.g. Using DNS servers you were told to (or the equipment was
automatically configured to use), which are no longer valid. For
instance, years ago, my ISP changed their DNS server addresses, and
anybody who used the old ones wouldn't have had a working network.

Sometime you have ISPs which tell you to use certain DNS server
addresses on their website help pages, but their system automatically
tells your computer to use some other addresses as it connects up.
You're left wondering which ones you should use, and sometimes it is not
the ones that they've left their system to automatically tell your
system about.

And, in some cases, perhaps many cases, some ISPs just have dreadful DNS
servers, and you're better off using something else. Mine have been in
the past, so I run my own DNS servers. Some people use one of Google's
DNS servers at 8.8.8.8.

NB: Be aware that you may need to use your own ISPs DNS servers if you
have a non-public IP address, and some of their servers that you need to
use have a non-public IP address, too (such as if you had to do email
through their mail servers).

> ping 8.8.8.8 fails...
> 56(84) bytes of data

Ping only tests that something responds to pings, and it doesn't have
to. If you want to test whether you can get DNS records from 8.8.8.8 as
a DNS server, then do a DNS request of it. You can change your
resolv.conf, or just use a tool that lets you ask specific servers on
demand.

e.g. dig example.com @8.8.8.8

> resolv.conf looks normal to me, been using it for a long time
>
> generated by network manager
> search pacbell.net
> nameserver 206.13.31.12
> nameserver 68.94.156.1

And you could test them in the same way.
dig example.com @206.13.31.12
dig example.com @68.94.156.1

Both of them gave prompt answers, to me, and I'm not even on their
network.

If you're running different computers and/or OSs on a network that
directly connects you to them, then there may need to be a reset time
between changes. If you have a router between you and them, then that
shouldn't be a problem. The router would be what they see, all the
time, and what you connect behind it isn't any of their affair.

> att today gave a runaround:
> one tech said their normal support cant help at all w linux,

Sometimes it's best to lie to tech support. Say you are using Windows
when you're not, that you just need the information to manually
configure it. But, again, if you connect to your ISP through a
modem/router, rather than plug a computer direct into their equipment,
it should be support for configuring the router, rather than a computer.

Looking back at your original posting:
> Imac does have internet, after following
> att rep on phone,
> to somehow ( I am forgetting the steps, probably)
> --click on something like wlesspanel ?
> --click on 2wire397

> --enter a 10digit key found on back of new modem

If that 10 digit key is something looking like this,
"00:1A:92:D8:F2:79" (actually more than 10 digits), that's the MAC of
the ethernet port, and they're asking you to set your current ethernet
port to have the same MAC address of another device's. That isn't going
to work if you try to put several devices on the same network with the
same MAC.

You should probably describe your network in greater detail,
particularly what's between your ISP and your computers (modem/router,
ethernet hole in the wall...).

Some ISPs supply you with one public IP, and you'd need a router doing
NAT between you and them to share the IP between multiple devices. Some
ISPs give you multiple public IPs, and you can simply have a switch/hub
between you and them.

The more info, the less guessing games by us, and less advice that's
going to lead you down the wrong path.

It's just an add-on so if you have the latest Firefox it works just as well
whatever the OS.
If you're having issues installing it on XP (through the add-ons tab) then it
can be something with the OS or some other extension interfering.

I don't use Windows but something I can recommend for both XP and Linux, in
case you don't use already, is 'adblock plus' (another extension; just search
for adblock on the add-ons tab). These never ending loading pages are more
often than not due to ads or tracking sites and adblock plus just makes
browsing much easier.

That's OK, tish happens. Let us know how things work in Linux, or if

In Firefox select Tools->Add-ons and enter "downloadhelper" into the

I tried the first.. Right now, I'm in Windows XP Pro. What happened is
a little circle going around in the middle of a window, "loading"
for the program. I put in the second, but the little search circle was
still going around from the first, and won't stop, so I don't know if

"loading" otherwise.

Canon camera/shotwell

2012-10-01 Thread Patrick Dupre

Hello,

I have a Canon camera:
Bus 006 Device 004: ID 04a9:3055 Canon, Inc. PowerShot G2

When I try to import the picture by using shotwell I get an error
message:

Unable to fetch previews from the camera:
I/O problem (-7)

But When I do the same from root, this glitch disappears.

How can I fix it?

Thank.

Re: A note on youtube-dl

2012-10-01 Thread Hiisi
Folks, sorry for interrupting this interesting conversation about
youtube downloader. My question is in the same field. At least about
another google product - search engine. Is there a way to store
google search results in a text file from bash script? I used to write
site parsers to grab contents from some sites using bash utilities
such as wget. Now I want to get to the next level and parse google
output. Using my usual way ggle returns 'sorry, you're computer
simmingly'.

In my case, the main disadvantage of the browser-related downloaders (as
opposed to a command line utility) is that I have a hard time scripting them.
If I am given 100 YouTube links to download locally, am I supposed to
copy/paste the addresses one by one into those
plugins/websites/javascripts/whatever? Really, the simplest way is to create a
bash script:

#! /bin/bash
youtube-dl -t
youtube-dl -t
youtube-dl -t
...

and let it run. That's my main reason for using youtube-dl. Then again, my
usecase is not very common... ;-)

Best, :-)

Most likely the target OS did not understand the labels that you are trying to
install. So if you took labels off a F17 machine and tried to put them on a
RHEL6 box, the labels might not be defined.

In your case may I suppose you're using GNOME?
I think there's a place where you assign default apps (System Settings?
gnome-tweak-tool?).
You could try the xdg-mime method maybe with:

xdg-mime default mozilla-thunderbird.desktop text/calendar

dump/restore selinux query

2012-10-01 Thread John Austin
Hi

I have recently used a bootable F17 memory stick (fully updated) to
dump/restore an un-mounted Centos 6.3 system root (/) partition
to a "clone" backup partition on a separate disk.

I obtain SELinux error messages during the restore phase

Does anyone (Daniel?) know:

Will this be a problem if/when I need to use the backup?

Regards

John

Yes, yes they are.

I should have piped it to less.

The specific solution was at the top where it's the first thing
the reader sees in a pager like less or in the GUI selinux
debugger. This is the correct placement.

I missed the specific solution the first time I read the message
because I read from bottom to top as I scrolled backwards through
my terminal output where I saw first a description of how to let
httpd make arbitrary connections (bad), followed by some very
general information about the selinux alert itself, where I
stopped reading.

Google was _very_ unhelpful on the subject of selinux, ganglia,
and httpd. All I got were recommendations for some cluster suit
that selinux had to be disabled entirely (it does not.)

Dear Google,

The command :

  semanage port -a -t http_port_t -p tcp 8652

allows httpd to talk to ganglia's gmetad despite the selinux
restriction on httpd making arbitrary connections.

I misspelled gmetad in the earlier message.

How do I change the default application for playing a video file
received from an iPhone [.mov]?

Presently I have to save it and play with vlc which works
perfectly.

Something called "Parole" is all that is offered and I have never
succeeded in playing anything using it, considering just removing
it. Google describes methods for setting the default but they don't
seem applicable to XFCE and F-17/64.
If you start the file manager, "Thunar", and then right click on the
X.mov file pick "Open with" and then "Open with other Application"
you should be able to choose vlc and that choice should stick for all
.mov files.

Perhaps it should "stick" but it does not. I can view it that way
but I am still offered only Parole with no "Other" option when I
attempt to view the video in Thunderbird mail. Do you know of a file
   that can be changed manually?

   Thanks,

   Bob

I have somewhat of a similar problem to this, I have Thunderbird
installed on Fedora 17, and in the "Details" tab ofthe "System Details"
where it lists the default applications for various types of files, I have:

Web: Firefox
Mail: Thunderbird
Calendar: _*Software Install???!!!*_
Music: Clementine
Video: Movie Player
Photos: Image Viewer

How do I change the (obviously!) incorrect assignment of Software
Install for viewing / opening Calendar? Bear in mind I already have
"Lightning" installed as a Thunderbird Add-on.so I can already view
and manipulate my calendar through TB's interfacebut HOW and WHY did
Software Install assign itself to that task?...and how do I undo this?
It's not hampering my usage of the PC in any way, it's just annoying

Thanks!

the script to the latest version.

Yes, you are right, sorry, the script isn't doing what I described, it's more
involved.

But my point was that manually copying the file from /tmp doesn't work either,
and one needs to dig deep in order to steal the file from the flash plugin.

Best, :-)
