The pdftk previously mentioned does not seem to do that.

try pdffonts from poppler-utils to see the font information. I'm not

Hope this helps,

Is it a lyx of a fedora issue?

That question isn't interesting.

More interesting would be to ask: Is it due to incorrect usage by the user
or a problem in the packaged software?

Why? Because if it were a problem in the software (or the packages)
as included with Fedora 20, it would be a problem affecting Fedora 20
and ought to be reported. Even more so, if you can rule out that you've
made a mistake.

I have used this technique. It offers an alternative to the pdftk tool
mentioned in other posts.

Example:
Original file is fred.pdf
Target file is wilma.pdf
We will extract pages 8 and 9

pdftops fred.pdf - | psselect -p8-9 | ps2pdf14 - wilma.pdf

I don't know if this is easier or harder than doing the same thing with
pdftk.

Converting pdfs to mobi

2014-01-26 Thread Max Pyziur

Greetings,

Much thanks for the great suggestions on tools to use to edit pdf files.

As a followup, are there tools that can convert pdfs to mobi format?

Amazon, as part of its Kindle service, does provide a pdf to azw (Amazon's
version of mobi) conversion service:
 - email the pdf as an attachment to the email address assigned to the
respective Kindle device

 - put convert in the subject line
 - within a few moments your Kindle account lists the converted pdf

The results are generally good. Once in a while, there is a pdf file that
was produced either from images (hence no text) or odd formating. In those
cases the conversion results are weak.

My interest would be in bypassing Amazon's service.

Thanks.

Configuring grub questions

2014-01-26 Thread Alex
Hi,

I have an old computer with two disks. One is a F18 system and the
other is a Win7 system. Both disks were installed and configured as
primary. I've been shutting down the system and switching the IDE
cables depending on which one I'd like to have booted.

How can I configure the grub on the F18 system so I can control which
system I'd like to load at boot time?

Could I set up the F18 system as a secondary disk with the Win7 system
as the primary, and boot from the secondary with grub configured on
it? I'm not sure how Win7 would respond to booting as a secondary disk
when the install was done as primary...

If this was lilo, I could probably figure it out, but I'm unsure how
to configure grub for this specifically.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Alex

Calibre will convert many input formats to many output formats,
including PDF to Mobi. Obviously if the PDF input is a set of scanned
images, the output will be poor unless you can do OCR on them (haven't
tried that). It also manages all your e-books, can talk to a variety

I have calibre installed, and I'll crow about it as much as you and
Franlin.

In particular, downloading/saving webpages, and then converting them to
.mobi.

However, I just tested converting the same document (pdf-mobi) using both
calibre and Amazon's Kindle service. The results are far better from
Amazon. Calibre's ebook-convert jumbles the output.

Just to compare, I do this from the command prompt:

ebook-convert source-file.pdf target-file.mobi

(ebook-convert recognizes the file extension).

Of course, the results are not consistent for web pages. With troublesome
webpages, I edit the html, removing a lot of embedded scripts, and the
like.

systemd security?

2014-01-26 Thread Tom Horsley
Some random questions just occurred to me:

We have systemd growing like a fungus through the
entire system, controlling everything, and it uses
d-bus for all of its communication between parts.

A google search turns up a gazillion web pages
that talk about d-bus APIs for javascript.

So, does this mean people will soon (if not already)
be writing malicious web pages that use d-bus
and systemd to take over your system if you happen
to visit the page?

Or forget web pages. Will random users be able
to disrupt systems that use systemd by spewing
bazillions of d-bus messages in a denial of
service?

I'm just curious here, but I betcha there are
folks who are more than curious out there...

ssh/dhclient

2014-01-26 Thread bruce
Got a test iisue/problem.

The situation is a group of test servers in a network that's managed
by an upstream DHCP server.

I have no control of the upstream DHCP allocation of IP addresses.

All the test servers (5) are running centos 6.5 as a test. (I know,
this is a fed channel, but the issues shoudl be the same!!)

The test boxes, run the nic/eth0.
The boxes run NetworkManager
All the boxes have the same /etc/resolv.conf
All the boxes can ping each other

All the boxes are on a subnet of 192.168.5.x

The issue I'm trying to track down, is that one box can't seem to
access the external 'net, ie ping www.google.com doesn't return, and
an actual test of ping 1.2.3.4 where the 1.2.3.4 is the actual ip of
google.com doesn't get processed.

I'm running/testing all of this remotely, so I was trying to see if
there's a way to change/force a new ipaddress for the box in question.
I'm curious to see if changing the ip on the box, will result in the
test ping working...

Thoughts/comments things to check??

Thanks
