It just means that yum was confused about the current state of reality
as represented by the repo servers. Clearing the metadata forces it to
resynch. It's not a panacea for every problem with yum but it doesn't
hurt and can sometimes help.

Well, he had previously posted about this problem on the *test* list on 3/29
and has gotten several replies and suggestions. Some, like myself, haven't had
any problems. Others have offered suggestions about not running the debug
version of the kernel. Then there are the usual "flash is your problem"
suggestions or asking about memory capacity.

I suggested here, and on the test list, that he try using a newly created user
to eliminate something in his environment. I've not seen any response to my
suggestion. So.the troubleshooting of this issue seems haphazard at best.

Of course the idea of having a martini while waiting to switch tabs does appeal
to me.

Apologies if asking you to repeat yourself, but I don't see the previous
messages on this.

What have you tried? What do you see?

The internet is full of "Firefox is slow, and here's what to do"
postings. Over the years, I've run safe mode (see the man page), started
the Profile Manager (see the man page) and started with a clean profile,
enabled/disabled syncing, disabled all plugins, and disabled Flash, all
in attempts to fix a performance issue. All of which, in various
combinations, resulted in partial, temporary victories.

So, let us know what you've tried, so we can avoid repeating the internet.

Happily running F19 and FireFox 28.0,

If the fans don't spin down when the computer is very idle, then you may

Fans can only cool things down, so much. If the computer is in a hot

Your fans are running because the CPU is hot. The question you need to
ask is not "how do I turn off the fans?" but "why is my CPU
overheating?". There's a whole (long) thread about this here in the last

1. when i'm telling that my fan runs at 100%, it's to not tell between
90, 95 100 or 80%... let's say it is a lot faster than under windows 7
on the same hardware.
so if windows 7 with ASUS software can adjust speed to make it quiet
(there are 2 fans - 1 for CPU + 1 for GPU) i guess a wonderful OS like

before you consider controlling cpu / gpu fans, there are 2

1- _if_ fan speed is variable, it is usually done so by temp
sensors that monitor temps and adjust fan speed.

2- if fans are running 100%, they may not be variable.

why is it you feel a need to change what is, or maybe already
being done for you?

When this box was delivered it worked but sounded as if it was ready for

Tagging allows you to categorise your links, so you might tag news links
as news, finance links as finance, computer help links as help, etc.
You can make your own tags, or use prepared ones that it already has.

> What do you do tag something then type it in the address bar and hit

Generally, I've found that you can type keywords into the address bar,
and Firefox will start suggesting pages based upon website addresses,
page titles, keywords, etc., that it finds from your bookmarks and
recent history.

Thanks to the last one (it finding things in your history), I tend to
not bother bookmarking things I'm only vaguely interested in. If I need
to revisit something in a couple of days time, or longer, Firefox can
find it for me.

Failing it finding something useful in your history, browsers like to
offer you suggestions made by external search engines, in the address
bar. Sometimes it's useful, occasionally it's unintentionally funny,
and sometimes completely the wrong suggestion.

I know that, but if you're bookmarking all your tabs quickly, because
you want to reboot/shutdown/eat, it's a nuisance having to do that, step
by step, thanks to crappy website authoring.

The Firefox is executed within the Xorg - X server.
So you can start from there,
- Xorg module for video card
- Mesa-based DRI module
Down the rabbit hole,
- Kernel video module

yum clean metadata

again when you already have it.

[When referring to a previous question, it's better to continue in the
same thread so people can understand the context. That's what threading
is for].

Your fans are running because the CPU is hot. The question you need to
ask is not "how do I turn off the fans?" but "why is my CPU
overheating?". There's a whole (long) thread about this here in the last
couple of says.
