Stop sending the same question over and over. If you don't understand
the detailed answer that was provided, then reply to it and ask further
questions to get the information that you need. If you really need step
by step instructions, then maybe try asking on the IRC channel. You
could also try the Chinese Fedora IRC channel, but I don't know how
active it is.

I dug up a couple of text messages from February with 3gp video clips
and they have the same small display problem so something has changed
here in VLC. /I have only had this problem with .3gp files. Mov clips work.

It is VLC ver. 3.0.3.

I needed chrome to run another PTZ camera for the functions that control
movement, pan and tilt. I wonder if that has changed something in the
VLC configuration? Perhaps I can set the configuration aside and it will
build anew?

I'll look at that tomorrow.

Ah yes, I forgot to mention that the heatsink must be unclogged. They
don't radiate heat away effectively if air can't readily flow over the
fins.

Cans of compressed air, with a straw on the nozzle, can be useful for
clearing the cruft out of heatsink fins. Do it outdoors, the mess goes
everywhere (including your eyes and lungs).

Don't use an air compressor, the blast is strong enough to do physical
damage, as well as with static electricity.

You need to be careful removing heatsinks, some of the assemblies don't
want to come apart without breaking. Likewise, when replacing
assemblies, they need to firmly attach. If they won't, you're better
off to buy a new assembly. Sometimes you find that the fan's bearings
are wearing out, or clogging up, and you want to replace the fan.

I've grown to hate those plasticky push down and click heatsink things.
There's some with a hook and lever which are better, but obviously can
only attach to suitable motherboards / CPU sockets. The bolt down Mac
ones seem a much more robust way of doing things, and necessary with
the really huge heatsinks they were using.

If this is a recent problem, can you clean up the heatsink?

I am not familiar with the liquid cooled systems. If you have one of
those refer to their manual for routine maintenance.

Otherwise if it is a fan cooled version:

This typically requires more than just vacuuming the outside.
Typically you have to remove the heatsink and fan, and use a brush or
q-tips to ferret out the various dustbunnies in the nooks and crannies
that are near the CPU.

Most heatsinks have retainers that hook down to the socket. look
carefully at how the hooks engage and look for a lever to release them.
Open ONLY that lever. Do not open the wire lever under the socket, it
holds the cpu to the socket.

You will need to be careful not to pull the CPU from its socket,
because if you do that without releasing the socket, the pins will bend
(if it is a pinned CPU) if it is BGA, you risk "smearing" the balls.
So that requires care. Its not difficult, just don't "rip" the heat
sink off, but pull it slowly from the grip of the adhesive bond of the
heatsink compound.

Once it is off, remove the fan, typically 4 screws, then using a small
tool, like a lady's finger care orange stick to ferret out all the hair
balls and dustbunnies. You can also wash the heatsink in warm soapy
water, it's aluminum, just like an aluminum cooking pot.

Clean the top of the CPU with a static free rag and a small amount of
alcohol to ensure a good contact area of the heatsink compound.

To replace the heatsink, re-attach the fan, noting the lenght of cord
to connect to the motherboard for the fan, so orient it as required,
Then add a single drop of heatsink compound at the center of the CPU.
Just a single drop. Then sort of "wiggle" the heatsink down to spread
the compound. Close the retainer as you had to do to remove the
heatsink.

That's it. Your cpu should be cooling as designed.

You can also check out some videos on line.

I'll presume you want to play mp4 videos on linux.

Go here,
https://rpmfusion.org/
and click the link to enable rpmfusion on your system,
https://rpmfusion.org/Configuration

Once that is done, from a command line (in a virtual console or in
a graphical term) type
dnf install mplayer vlc ffmpeg

You can then use
man mplayer
or
man ffmpeg
or
man vlc
to get information on how to use them to play videos.

e.g.
mplayer [video name here]
ffplay [video name here]
vlc [video name here]

There is a graphical interface smplayer to use mplayer in the gui, and
vlc is automatically a gui program.

Currently it is not known how the fedora installer determines which boot
mechanism to use.

Once a bootable installation has been achieved (BIOS or UEFI) the "alternative"
boot mechanism
can be installed. Both of the possibilities described below have been well
tested.
Triple check the correct device name at all stages, /dev/sda is assumed below.

Case 1: The machine has booted from a BIOS install Install
the UEFI boot loader
mkfs -t vfat /dev/sda2
if required (double check sda2)
mount /dev/sda2 /boot/efi
(double check sda2)
dnf [re]install grub2-efi-x64 shim-x64 efibootmgr this
should populate /boot/efi/EFI/fedora
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg create
the UEFI .cfg file*

This turned out to be a bad proposal, since the workstation didn't
boot up anymore with the vanilla kernel.

Perhaps I should have explicitly quoted here what the page also
says:

" Important notes ...
most systems work better and run in a more secure manner with the
  official Fedora kernels"

Next time I might just mention exactly this ... ;)

Fortunately, the local IT support went in and updated the BIOS which
fixed the memory issue

Congratulations!
And thanks for the feed-back!

I get a single bit of disk activity when I try to boot off the
external drive, so it is at least *trying* to find the 1st stage boot
block. While I am obviously not 100% certain, my thinking is that
something isn't quite right with the grub config.

Let me see if I can't take a peek at the 1st sector and see what is in there.

That could be a message from your BIOS, which would imply it's not
finding even the first stage boot block. Check BIOS settings.

portable (non-live) Fedora on an external USB drive

2018-06-25 Thread Go Canes
Similar to an earlier thread [portable (really) Fedora on stick], I am
trying to create a portable Fedora 27 install on an external USB hard
drive. I have done this in the past as recently as Fedora 14, but
things have changed since then, and I seem to be hitting some
unexpected issues

The install proceeds as expected, no apparent errors, etc. But then
when I go to boot the external drive, it immediately displays
"Operation System not found" - Note that is is "Operation", *not*
"Operating".

Googling, I found suggestions regarding setting boot flags which I
have tried to no avail.

In the thread mentioned above, there was a step to use dracut to
rebuild the initramfs files, which I have done, again to no avail.
(This step was done by using the install USB stick, the "troubleshoot"
option, and then chroot'ing into /mnt/sysimage).

Any suggestions as to what I should try next?

Some additional info

Internal drive has been wiped, and is not bootable.
External USB drive is 4TB, and has a GPT partition table using the
default layout provided by the installer.

I.e. the BIOS was the problem, as I had suspected.
