Re: How to shut off org.freedesktop.trackers

2019-10-13 Thread Javier Perez
Thanks everyone!
I went into Sessions and Startup _> Autostart and killed all the trackers
in there. It seems to have solved it!

So far, no tracker legend on the log like it used to do.

Let see if it permanently solves it

Thanks

Re: How to shut off org.freedesktop.trackers

2019-10-13 Thread sixpack13
maybe not the best solution, but it works for me

gsettings set org.freedesktop.Tracker.Miner.Files crawling-interval -2
gsettings set org.freedesktop.Tracker.Miner.Files enable-monitors false

- the above fetched from this list some time ago. question was the same: How to
shut up tracker ? -

sudo sed -i 's/X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=.*/X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=false/'
/etc/xdg/autostart/tracker-*.desktop;

the last command needs to be done every time tracker gets updated !
The first both only once.
And the last command does NOT prevent that tracker gets started during login,
but it stops after some time.
see after some seconds: ps aux|grep -i tracker

I'm currently NOT sure what tracker stops.
I didn't dig in it that deep, but Tom Horsley did...

extra:
as user !
rm -rf ~/.cache/tracker && ln -s /tmp/ ~/.cache/tracker
rm -rf ~/.local/share/tracker && ln -s /tmp/ ~/.local/share/tracker

why ?
/tmp is tmpfs and lives in my RAM, so no extra writing on my ssd !

btw: there are some more entries in ~/.cache I link to /tmp (on my single user
box)

~/.cache/thunderbird
~/.cache/mozilla/firefox

I don't know for sure that this is relevant, but it might help:

How to shut off org.freedesktop.trackers

2019-10-13 Thread Javier Perez
HI
How do I shut off the Freedesktop trackers?
Right now they are filling up my logs with this message.

Oct 13 10:12:38 pepewin.localdomain dbus-broker-launch[9415]: Activation
request for 'org.freedesktop.Tracker1' failed.
Oct 13 10:13:49 pepewin.localdomain dbus-broker-launch[9415]: Activation
request for 'org.freedesktop.Tracker1' failed.

Every few seconds I get one like that. I masked all the trackers because
they were keeping the hard disk almost continuously in use (hdd light lit
on all the time).

Thanks

Bonjour is often found on Windows machines. It was often installed by
printer drivers and other network clients (e.g., home automation).
Windows 10 has had several iterations of something resembling mDNS.
You can't rely on it working after each update. Meanwhile, Apple
Bonjour has a serious bug (due to missing quotes, it can used to
run "C:\Programs" with full privileges, so if a bad guy can install malware
as a regular use and call it "C:\Programs", they own your system. Bonjour
is often banned from corporate networks, so if your network has Windows
machines you should be prepared to use the
"C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts" file. Editing this file does
require
administrative super-powers.

There are other benefits. Learning DNS (if that's good for you).
Working around lousy DNS servers from your ISP. Most things that you
can connect to a LAN will use DNS to resolve addresses, *nearly* most
modern things will use MDNS, a lot of simpler/older things will only
use DNS.

I'd say that unless your IPs are fixed to always be the same addresses
(whatever method is used), using the hosts file will be the cause of
some problems. Using multiple hosts file (one on each PC) just
increases the work required.

> DNS is generally way overkill and more work to manage.

For most people probably, and using BIND would be. Though there are
smaller DNS servers that can read your hosts file, then serve that data
to all the other computers on your LAN.

If you have a decent modern router, it may be able to do all of this
for you, anyway.
