Many thanks. I've edited my ssl.conf according to the guide and it now
seems to be working correctly. It even passes the Qualys tests
(https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html) with an A :-)

I have some comments on the guide text, mainly small typos, I can send
you a separate email or try to edit the page directly. Not sure what
the protocol is here.

I have Fedora installed on a MS Surface GO 2 (now obsolete, the 3 is out)
but it "mostly works fine".

It runs faster than Windows 10 on the GO's limited CPU (usually Pentium
Gold or Core-my something or other 2 core processor).

The only thing I have to fidget with is I can't double-tap the title bar to
maximize the windows using the touchscreen. Probably something fixible with
Gnome Tweaks?

What do you see as that job? I mean, I'm only one of many moderators,
but I've tried to reply to folks who send too large emails to the list

I'll be clear: I do do that.

Messages larger that 60k are held and I don't release them, as they are
not valid. Instead for those, I mail the poster directly and tell them
that their post is over the limit and they should trim it and resend.

I just send the canned response which you can configure in the Mailman
settings (I moderate the Evolution list). Hasn't failed me yet, though
having it happen automatically would be nice.

The canned response says the message is being held, and it will be reviewed.

From our view of things, messages are only held and not reviewed or
released. Or that has been my experience.

Perhaps the canned response should be changed to use the exact
language in the Mailing List Guidelines
(https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines#No_attachments):

Attachments to email make the messages much bigger. They create an
enormous amount of extra Internet traffic when a mailing list sends
the message and attachments to thousands of people worldwide. They
also can create problems for the recipients, who may be limited to
low-bandwidth connections. A reader may not know they are downloading
an email with a very large attachment until it is too late, and they
might be blocked from getting other mail until they finish that
download, which makes them frustrated.

Don't use attachments to your email. Instead, post a file in your
Fedorapeople.org space, pastebin, or elsewhere on the web, and include
a URL to that file in your email, not the file itself.

Personally, I think the policy is bad. You don't want to disgorge the
message and attachment. Rather, you want to keep them together.
Otherwise, important context and information is lost, and the archive
of the message is damaged.

I am sympathetic to internet poverty. If that's the problem being
solved, then down-sample an image, compress a text file, etc.

I think it would be ideal to switch from hold to reject for
these "large" messages. That isn't possible from the web
interface (so far as I could tell).

I have not had to directly administer any mailman3 lists, so
I don't know offhand what the process looks like to
configure that on a per-list basis as a mailman site admin.
It may not be possible, but the option in mailman2 were
pretty flexible and I suspect they are similarly so in
mailman3.

If we could make that change, then posters who send large
messages would get a clear rejection rather than the held
message reply which makes it seem like their message may be
accepted.

No matter how many admins/moderators we have, there will
always be delays in replying manually which disrupts the
conversation.

Ugh, that's not good. If that is the case, then that needs to be
fixed. Discarding attachments or expiring them damages messages in the
archive.

And worse, the Mailing List Guidelines says to use the service. Cf.,

I don't believe it's possible. It would certainly be a welcome
addition, as would be a way for the admin to edit the canned rejection
message, which currently they can't do (they can edit the message

It's not gdm that's the problem. gdm runs a Gnome session and that's
where the settings are.

https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/gnome-suspends-after-15-minutes-of-user-inactivity-even-on-ac-power/79801
There's an explanation of how to change the gdm user's Gnome settings
and you can also do it using dconf overrides.

The XPS 13 9380 was sold with "128" GB or larger SSD, but the heatsink on
the 128GB SSD is not adequate for larger drives, and the ultralight form factor
limits cooling options.   You can't upgrade RAM.  Avoid ultralight unless
portability is a priority.

I advise looking for a system that can charge via USB C.  I recommend getting
a 2nd power source for laptops.  One 60 watt USB C power source works can
power many devices.  I have the Dewalt USB-C Kit that includes a USB-c charger
for Dewalt batteries that can also provide USB-C power to portable devices.
using
either USB-C power brick or a Dewalt 20V battery pack.

Much thanks to everyone for their replies.

One issue that I'm having with my 2013 Dell XPS L322x is heat. And I
wonder if it is tied to what you describe for the 9380 (original drive was
128GB, adequate for the heat sink; subsequent 1TB drive gives off more
heat than the machine can dissipate). That's the state of my primary
Fedora laptop (I installed 1TB harddrive circa 2018).

I've purchased a laptop cooling pad, and that seems to help.

All that said, is there a recent Dell XPS variant that the Fedora community
would recommend?

Much thanks,

There is usually a lag before linux fully supports newly released
hardware. Some
vendors have released laptops with pre-installed linux, but using drivers
that don't
immediately appear in linux distributions. Models intended for use in
large organizations
generally don't change hardware specs as quickly as consumer products, but
when I
tried to purchase a name-brand laptop identical to those used by one large
organization
I was told they are only sold in large batches with Windows Enterprise
images specified
by the organization.

"Refurbished" models 3 or 4 years old have had time time for linux
experience to solidify and any general design issues to be found.

Then perhaps we can adjust the template used when a message
is held to include something like this?

NOTE: If your message has been held due to size, please consider
this a rejection and a friendly request to reduce the size and
resend. The list moderators will not approve such messages.

If you're attaching logs or command output, trim it to a minimal
amount (we can ask for more context, if needed).

If you're attaching images, crop them to reduce their size.

Keep in mind that attachments will be encoded by your mail client
(usually via base64) and this encoding increases the size by as much
as 30%.

This can be done for the users list by copying the default
template from:

/usr/lib/python3*/site-packages/mailman/templates/en/list:user:notice:hold.txt

to

/var/lib/mailman3/templates/lists/users.lists.fedoraproject.org/en/

and then editing.

[I don't know offhand if that requires any reload of mailman
and I don't have time to stand up a test instance to figure
that out at the moment. But it should be easy enough to
test. :)]

That could save some time in moderation and make things
clearer for list members.

I hesitate to suggest increasing the maximum size as all
that does is ensure we'll have this same conversation when
folks wonder why they can't send messages larger than 100k
(or whatever size) to the list). But if 60k really is too
small, it is an option.

I do think we should adjust the list guidelines to not
recommend the use of fpaste. Since it migrated to
paste.centos.org and has a maximum 24 hour paste life, I
don't think it's remotely useful or helpful for mailing
list usage.

whence USB 2?

2023-05-08 Thread Michael Hennebry

As I cannot use my chromebook, g, I've been looking for a lpatop.
It seems that nothing connects to USB 2.
They might have 3 to 17 USB C connectors,
but I have abolutely nothing that can use those.
I get it.
USB 4 is the latest and greatest and only uses C connectors.
Why no connectors for USB 2 at all?

BTW it can be a pain discovering what kind of connections a laptop has.
Usually an ad will mention HDMI and how great the internals are,
but not what kind of USB connections or whether it will take an SD card.

I do not know which modern laptops still have USB2/3 ports; I
can relate to your USB-C pain as the Mac laptop I used had two of
them, forcing me to get a soapbox-like appendage with the ethernet,
USB3, and HDMI ports I needed.

Bestbuy lists a few; it seems you need to look for USB 3 or USB 3.1

Fortunately this machine is just a laptop that I experiment with and to
take on trips. My main postgresql lives on a server. It is much more
complex in that one of the databases is updated every minute. Shutting it
down for the length of time it takes me to backup and restore is a
pain.postgresql-setup --upgrade seems like a better approach. I'd still
have to back it up but it would be as critical. My server is still on
Fedora 37.

Thanks again for the info. I will likely create some scripts from your
examples to use on the server.

Best,
Clifford

F38 - qr code reader?

2023-05-08 Thread Robert Moskowitz
Is there an app that will use my notebook's camera to read a qr code and
put the content, maybe into the clipboard?

Xfce app would be nice.

thanks

CoBang is available as a FlatPak and QtQr is available from the RPM
Sphere repo.

USB numbers refer to the signaling/speed over the wire, USB letters
refer to the shape and size of the port. While USB 4 can only be used
with the new USB-C ports, USB 3 could be used with either shape. The
only way the USB Implementers Forum could have made it more confusing
is if they used cuneiform. At any rate, you are looking for USB-A
shaped ports.

The Lenovo Legion 5 was the only current laptop I could find with 4
USB-A ports:
https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/c/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-5-series

If you can settle for 3 there are options from just about every manufacturer.

Also, you can get cables with the old USB-B printer/scanner peripheral
plug on one end and the new USB-C computer plug on the other end, to
free up one of those USB-A ports for your flash drives or other
devices with unreplaceable cables. You don't need new devices that
understand USB-C or converter boxes because the signal over the wire
is backward-compatible.

In the "zbar" package, there's a "zbarcam" command line application.
You would have to feed the output to a clipboard program.
