Perhaps GDM is suspending due to the new power policy in fedora 38, and a
network connection is being dropped or something related?

It’s impossible to predict what’s going on without knowing what is actually run
by this non-fedora software.

 ├─1467 /usr/local/dwagent/runtime/bin/dwagent agent.pyc -filelog
 ├─8884 bash -l

Jun 28 21:16:28 homere sh[1447]: Starting DWAgent daemon
Jun 28 21:16:30 homere systemd[1]: Started dwagent.service - DWAgent.

It seems that when a user logout, after a while, the service stall.
It is restarted when this user login back.
I have not explanation.

Operator error. Exporting the wrong name because of a cut and paste.
Once I fixed that, definitely works to change colors in journalctl
output, will have to tune it to get what I want.
I put this in my .bashrc so everything is set on login.
SYSTEMD_PAGER=less
export SYSTEMD_PAGER
SYSTEMD_LESS="[list of less options]"
export SYSTEMD_LESS

So, the code for journalctl shows it reading the options from the
variables, and invoking less with those options, but it doesn't seem to
affect the behavior of running journalctl, or at least the colors don't
change. Maybe I'll look more closely at some point, but no joy for now.

This is also relevant. Unfortunately, it seems that journalctl ignores
the input of SYSTEMD_LESS. It is hard to tell, because there is no
example of the kind of input it wants or whether it only accepts
options without arguments, as the default options all are. I would
probably have to look at the journalctl code to determine if they are
hard coded into the program. There is no configuration file to set
them in any case.

Thanks for asking this. I was just thinking about this last week
because I don't like the dark blue color that is used for some entries
in the journal. But it slipped away into the stream of daily noise, so
this reminded me.

Re: Asking for thoughts/comments on a laptop/specs

2023-06-28 Thread Roger Heflin
The only issue I see with that one is the display is 1600x900. I
personally look for 1080p on 17".

Costco has an HP 17" (1080P) that just went on sale this week for $499

you are near a costco have a membership or know someone who does.

I bought one last week. It has 512G nvme + 12G ram (8g+4g). Fedora
is installed and working on it, the only issue was the wifi card is
new and is not supported in Fedora 37/38 kernels (you need the upgrade
kernel). The wifi card is a realtek so I may replace it with a $20
intel card since the realtek's have in the past not been the best.

AFAIK these are just the colours used by your default pager, normally
'less', so e.g. 'man less' for more information.

journal / systemd colours ?

2023-06-28 Thread lejeczek via users

Hi guys.

I wonder if somebody might know how to customize, to change
systemd journal's colours?
I'm specifically thinking of changing 'WARN' warnings which
get - in my opinion unfortunate, for I use other than white
background colours - painted in yellow.

I just watched a video about the "framework" laptop, pretty much
infinitely upgradeable and repairable and supports fedora. If I
had any use for laptops, that's the one I'd get (but screens are
too small and I don't need anything portable anyway).

The fstab man page is not an exhaustive list of filesystems or options,
just the format of the file itself. There's lots more in the mount(8)
man page (as referenced in the fstab man page), although I don't think
there's much about virtiofs there. The server side (that libvirt
manages for you) comes from this site, which has more info about using
it:

Asking for thoughts/comments on a laptop/specs

2023-06-28 Thread bruce
Looking at/over a couple of laptops and thought I'd ask the list for input.

The laptop(s) are HP..

The initial url for the box is

https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp/hp-laptop-17z-cp300-799v0av-1
17" hp amd ryzen5 6core/12thread
8G
128G SSD
$400

would probably add 16G for +$60
 +1tb for $50 (as well)

laptop would be used for basic/work stuff running fed/linux..

thoughts/comments

thanks/much appreciation

ps --- there's also an intel -- 10core/12 thread for 500 -- woud need
to beef it up as well..

the url -- https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/vwa/17-inch-laptops/scrs=17-?orderBy=3

From man virtnetworkd

It is one of a collection of modular daemons that replace
functionality  previously

provided by the monolithic libvirtd daemon.

Looks like pieces haven't made it through the update process. with
libvirtd still providing all the services.

As I said, in
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org/message/6C74V5VVPE4EX5MESHTJCIPPYX5V43J4/

During the upgrade, the Xorg nvidia drivers may have been updated. Example:

  /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
  /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglxserver_nvidia.so

This is user mode code yes.

The upgrade does not do anything to the already loaded kernel modules.
You must reboot to be able to use the new drivers.
Until then the system uses the old, already loaded, drivers.

Maybe there is user mode code that was upgraded that caused the issue?

Barry

Thanks Barry, that could have been the case but I'm not aware of any
component like that, but that doesn't mean there isn't.
