Since I don't need it very often, I prefer not to create a script so I
can copy/paste from my notes to remind me what it does. The notes also
have a copy of the expected output in case something changes. YMMV of
course.

I'm aware of that.

If you don't need it very often, you're best off making it into a shell
script so that you don't need to worry about forgetting the syntax.
~/bin is in the default path, although the directory doesn't exist until
you create it, which is a tad odd.

Very occasionally my Brother all-in-one needs to be prodded with an
avahi command. My notes say:

Use 'sudo avahi-browse -a -t' to check that
printer, scanner etc. are all visible. Use
   DNS-SD (Avahi) versions of drivers.

I used to use the proprietary driver from Brother but dropped it over a
year ago and haven't looked back.

The GPG check of that file verifies the message content with the
signature content, and with the GPG key separately downloaded. If it
passes that test you have a checksum file you can trust.

The sha256sum test using that file knows how to use the SHA256 data in
the message, but rest is gibberish to it. It complains about that. If
the SHASUM agrees with your downloaded ISO file, you should also get a
message about that.

After GPG checking the checksum, you could delete all the PGP stuff
from that file, and just keep the checksum info, and try the sha256sum
test like that (for a less confusing output).

To me, copying and pasting a checksum from a HTTPS page is less painful
than this malarkey. Even just doing a checksum on the downloaded ISO
and eyeballing the hash between it and what was written on a webpage is
less annoying. And the old behaviour of having a dozen checksums for
each different ISO file in the same text file was also a pain, you'd
get one OKAY message (for the ISO you downloaded) buried in a lot error
messages for all the other ISO files you didn't download.

Even after this step, you've only verified what you download. If you
write it to a USB drive, or a DVD, you still need to verify that *that*
write worked fine. It's not just a verification about anti-tampering,
it's verification against write errors.

The verification procedures and instructions still need more thought.

I've had two Brother printers/scanners, currently a MFC-7820N, and never
had any issues running them under Fedora. Brother Linux support has been
great. I'm using Xsane for the scanner.

I recently purchased a stand-alone HP ScanJet Pro 4500 (L2749A),
.

The L2749A works fine with KDE Ubuntu's Skanlite, but I have not tried
with KDE Fedora.

I found I have to wake the scanner up before trying to connect to it
over the network. I don't know if the scanner responds to the magic
wakeup packet.

Ironically, I bought the L2749A because my multi-function Epson
Workforce 630 did the same thing. I could not scan anymore on the
Workforce due to ink problems, so I bought a stand-alone scanner.

I filed a complaint about Epson with my Attorney General's office. It
is unlawful to tie products and services, like scanner function to
Epson ink.

The thing is, it is so profitable for companies to engage in the shady
practice, the companies will not change. The companies still make more
money after the fines for doing it, so there's no reason to stop. It
does not matter how many times the FTC or a state Attorney General
drags them into court.

Upgrading to Fedora 38: more comments

2023-10-15 Thread John Pilkington
My recent posts were about 'just in case' precautions before a system
upgrade. I now appear to have a working upgraded system. It wasn't
trouble-free and I didn't use the live workstation download.

The system uses the rpmfusion nvidia 470xx video drivers, which build
modules locally via akmods. Booting the F38 system with the
kernel-6.5.6-200.fc38 did not complete, but kernel-6.5.6-100.fc37 seemed
fine.

Eventually, running the F37 kernel, I "sudo dnf reinstall"ed all the
rpmfusion 470xx packages *and* the kernel*6.5.6-200.fc38 packages and
waited for the jobs to complete. Booting to F38 seems ok now. The
problems were similar to, but worse than, those seen in earlier
upgrades. There's a related bugzilla.

Scanner works!

In the past I have had near infinite trouble getting scanners
compatible with linux, but I just replaced a dead Epson multi-function
device that I only ever used as a scanner with a Canoscan LIDE 300
and was shocked and amazed when it just worked out of the box.

P.S. The epson isn't quite as bad as HP forbidding you from using
the scanner if it is out of ink, but it finally decayed to the
point that it decided there were errors with the ink cartridges,
and nothing would allow it to use the scanner after that.

The file is ASCII text and should contain a comment line and a 16-line PGP
signature block, which
are clearly not properly formatted checksum lines.

but I just have black screen.

Here is my ~/.vnc/xstartup

#!/bin/sh

unset SESSION_MANAGER
unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS
#exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
gnome-session --session=gnome-classic &

I also tried both
exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

but same behavior.

What did I miss?

Thank.

and did it again.  Same result.

This is BZ 733561, opened in 2011 and NOTABUG.  Isn't it time that
this was mentioned in the 'helpful' warning suggestion?

I agree that the wording in the instructions could be better.

The CHECKSUM file has a GPG signature and the sha256sum of ISO, so the
sha256sum command will give a warning that there are improperly
formatted lines (the GPG signature). But, as the instructions say: “If
the output states that the file is valid, then it's ready to use!”

That's fine. But the response doesn't say that the file is valid, only
that there is a formatting problem. The documentation is misleading,
and has been for years.

It would be nice if there was a way to make sha256sum ignore the GPG
key, but you should:

1.) make sure the GPG signature is valid.
2.) look to see if it says the file you downloaded is OK and ignore the
warning about improperly formatted lines, since you know from the
previous step that those lines are ok.
