NeuroFedora is looking for a Spin/Labs master

2019-08-07 Thread Ankur Sinha
Hello,

(Please get in touch via the NeuroFedora channels)

We now have enough software in NeuroFedora to create Comps groups and
think of a Spin/Lab. Would anyone like to join the NeuroFedora team as
our Spin master?

We have two sessions at Flock too. So if you are going, please attend
them to learn more:

Talk: NeuroFedora: FOSS and Open Science

FAQ
---

1. What is NeuroFedora?
Essentially, it's a set of packages just like any other Fedora packages.
The only difference is that these packages/software are all related to
Neuroscience. This includes modelling, imaging, data analytics, and
anything else that anyone interested in Neuroscience may use.

2. Why NeuroFedora?
Because FOSS and Open Science go hand in hand, we've come together to
provide a ready to use Fedora based platform for neuroscience users.
Instead of spending time setting up their systems, installing software,
we want to provide them with an installable ISO image.

3. What skills do I need to be Spin master?
None at all. Spin creation simply requires knowledge of the Fedora Spin
process and all of it is very well documented. Whatever skills you
need can be learned "on the job". The NeuroFedora team has quite a few
contributors that have been around for a while and can show you the
ropes.

4. Where can I learn more about NeuroFedora?
All our links are listed here in our documentation:
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/neurofedora/communicating/

5. Is there anything else I can do?
Where do we even begin!? So much! Have a look here:
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/neurofedora/contributing/

AskFedora has moved to Discourse!

2019-04-29 Thread Ankur Sinha
Hello everyone,

I am happy to announce that we've moved AskFedora to a new Discourse
instance at https://askbeta.fedoraproject.org. In the coming days,
https://ask.fedoraproject.org will also be updated to point to the new
instance. Our Askbot instance is now in read-only mode, and will be
moved to https://askbot.fedoraproject.org.

Discourse is a great new discussion platform that allows for
conversations, in addition to question-and-answer workflows. Given how
troubleshooting usually does require a few rounds of discussion, we feel
that Discourse's workflow fits it just a bit better. You can, of course,
mark replies as "solutions" and so on to make information easier to
find.

Please note that we've limited access via FAS only---it helps us combat
spam, get useful metrics, and it makes it easier for folks to start
contributing to the community.

Please take a minute to check out the new instance.

- https://askbeta.fedoraproject.org/c/start-here -> we've summarised
useful tips on using Discourse in this category.
- https://askbeta.fedoraproject.org/c/site-feedback -> please post
suggestions, ideas, feedback in this category.

Yeh. I double-checked that this is documented in the the docs[1]
(scroll down to Figure 26):

"The Make this user administrator check box gives the user you are
creatng administrative rights (by adding this user into the wheel
group), allowing this user to use the sudo command to perform tasks
normally only available to root using only the user password, instead
of the root password. This may be more convenient, but can also pose a
security risk."

Installing pandoc-crossref on Fedora 26 using Cabal

2017-09-25 Thread Ankur Sinha
Hello,

I've been trying to install `pandoc-crossref` on my Fedora 26 system
using Cabal, but can't seem to do so. I've tried three different
machines and get the same error on all. Would someone with some Haskell
experience be able to help please?

Here's the error. I've also filed the upstream but they haven't been
able to help either. It may be a Fedora specific issue?

Please check /var/log/messages for any errors, as root:.

# egrep -i 'error' /var/log/messages

You can also try restarting the networkmanager service, as root:

# systemctl restart NetworkManager.service

I understand completely. I keep saying: move to a different DE if it
doesn't work for you. I also keep saying: if you've solved the issue
with the numerous solutions, there is no reason to bring it up again, is

I asked them to:
1. Accept the current condition
2. Use one of the numerous solutions that have been out *since* gnome3
was released
3. Move to another DE
4. Fork the project. Mate is an example.

They've already gone ahead and done one of these. What is the use of
bringing the topic up on a fedora user channel? It changes nothing, even
the initial author of the email knew that. Everyone on the list even
knew that F18 has the change even, apparently. Why bring this up at all
then? This channel is to help people troubleshoot fedora, not to have
folks who have already solved their issues scream "why did I have the
issue in the first place?".

We are "downstream". We take what "upstream"s make and put them together
as a Linux distribution, contributing to upstreams in the process.

Discussions on *this* list did *not* cause it. Gnome folks do *not*
monitor this list. This has been said again and again. The public outcry
that was over social networks, and discussions on the Gnome mailing
lists caused the change. This channel does not have visibility to the
gnome project.

This was a tongue in cheek response. We're allowed to have a sense of

So, let the initial rant proceed. That's OK. That's professional, non
combative, non hypocritical (even if the author already did what he had
to do and is using the same DE). It is also completely professional to
use phrases like "stupidity". It is also constructive, professional to
rant.

I understand. Thank you, Sir.

Why? Aren't fedora project contributors allowed to laugh?

Here's the thing. A lot of people worked very hard to make each Fedora
release for users. I did too. I packaged stuff, tested each release
candidate, filed bugs, so that users would have a better experience. So,
when people run around writing "power-off stupidity remains in Fedora
17", I'm not pleased. It's a tiny thing, known for ages, solved for
ages, and yet, you have the right to defame us publicly over it, and we
do not have the right to stop you.

Yes. So, what is the discussion about? The current issue has a solution,

It was a tongue in cheek response. Of course I don't want you to move to

Yes. It doesn't work for you. Lots of people have objected, and
therefore you have poweroff back in F18.

I'm not objecting to your saying that its a bad design. I'm saying that
you need to use one of the many solutions that are available and move on
instead of bringing this up on the mailing list.

Neither am I kidding, nor am I a masochist. I just don't like random
folks venting on mailing lists. If you haven't learnt yet, venting does
nothing. It doesn't bring any changes. All it does is waste infra.

Like N number of people have already written: Install the extension, no
more alt required. From F18, you'll have your poweroff back. In the
meantime, if alt is too much, and installing an extension one time is
too much, use something else. Move to another DE.

ER: "if"? That used to mean something..

What I'm suggesting is that you move to Windows/Mac if no DE in Linux
works for you. I'm sure you won't fork a DE to customize for yourself if
you can't install an extension or use alt. LOL.

How difficult is pressing the alt button?

I don't understand what the cribbing is all about really:

1. press alt button
2. install the extension
3. if you use a terminal: "poweroff" works there
4. use a different DE
5. use windows/mac

Any of the above solutions will work. To avoid pressing one alt button I
see folks typing emails discussing how difficult it is to press the alt
button? Doesn't that require pressing more keys? So, since it isn't
efficiency you're after, what is it?

I'll request you to please quit ranting. It isn't constructive in the
least. This isn't the place for it: your personal blog is. It's F/LOSS.
If you don't like it, do something to change it: fork gnome3 if you
want? Here, all you need to do is install an extension. It really isn't
too much to ask :)

I'm not sure if there's an application that provides app based bandwidth
usage. I personally use nethogs:

# yum install nethogs

[X-post] Fedora Tour is in need of web developers!

2012-04-26 Thread Ankur Sinha
Hello folks!

Well, the title says it all. Fedora Tour[1], which we recently decided
to make a web application needs web developers. Ironic eh? The thing is:
none of the current Fedora Tour team members have ever done web
development before. We’re learning, but the changes with HTML5, CSS3 and
Javascript have really steepened the learning curve for us. At this
time, we’d like an established web developer to come in and help us
reduce the learning time and get down to the implementation as soon as
possible.

SO!
- Are you a web developer?
- Do you have some free cycles?
- Do you want to work on a brand new, *awesome* project?

** Give us a shout today!!

You can either catch us on #fedora-tour on Freenode, or you can ping us
on the mailing list[2]. I’m around on quite a few fedora IRC channels,
so you can also catch me personally if you want. My nick is
“FranciscoD“.

The wiki page[3] for fedora tour contains all the info you’d need.

Have you tried "ctrl + click" on the terminal icon? OR right click the
terminal icon and select "new window"? You can have as many terminals

Testing required for deluge systemd unit files

2011-10-01 Thread Ankur Sinha
Hi all,

I've written unit files for deluge to be used with systemd. There are
two unit files:

deluged.service[1]: for the deluged daemon
deluge-web.service[2]: for the web ui

As far as I know,
- they need to be copied to /lib/systemd/system
- systemctl daemon-reload
- systemctl start deluged.service
- systemctl start deluge-web.service

I'm not a deluge user so I don't know how the daemon etc function. I'll
be grateful if someone could test these and provide feed back. I have a
novice level knowledge of systemd, so all modifications to these files
are welcome, as always. :)

Hi,

I'm not sure if this matters but evolution switched to using the latest
XDG standards[1] for file locations in 2.32. Your user data is now no
longer in .evolution, rather its in .config/evolution. The new version
should automatically move files to the new location iirc.

OR:

You can use gconf-editor to see the settings for the address book. iirc,
the source etc. are specified there. I had some trouble after a back up
and restore, making some changes to the gconf files fixed it. Do back up
your gconf settings before you go tweaking (~/.gconf/apps/evolution).

You should also skim the evolution bug reports to see if this is a known
issue.

Ankur

What in this file could make both rsync and git fail?? :(

2010-12-30 Thread Ankur Sinha
Hello,

I have a simple shell script which I want to upload using rsync, or to a

fails at "generating_files phase=1" (and times out), and git just hangs
before timing out. I can't seem to paste the file to fpaste.org either.
I get a 503 for some reason. I've checked my network, and therefore
something in the file is erroneous. Can someone please confirm/clarify
this? It's because of some unprintable characters someplace (I think).

Hello,

Can you please file a bug at bugzilla.redhat.com against Packagekit? You
can do so here:

There's also a list of already filed bugs that you should look at, in
case the issue's already been reported and the maintainer's requested

TurboGears2 on Fedora

2010-09-19 Thread Ankur Sinha
hello,

I'd like to try out an instance of TurboGears2 on Fedora. Can someone
please tell me how to go about this?

I have installed the TurboGears2 package using yum. I'm stuck now.
rpm -qd TurboGears2 only lists a README that has licensing info.

>From the documentation[1], it asks me to run easy_install, which, from
the looks of it, is downloading the package sources and installing
separately in a virtualenv environment instance.

How do I make use of the Fedora turbo gears package please?

hi,

I've run it all over again.

I removed all my USB stuff. Only plugged in my hard disk using a SATA to
USB converter. The converter that I bought also has a external power
chord which I've attached to the hard disk as well. This is all the info
I got. At this time, only one of my USB ports is in use.

Some one enquired if I had a PCI slot. I'm not sure. My laptop is an HP
dv6226tx[1]. I don't think it has one.

The hard disk is pretty old. It doesn't have any warranty. If it isn't
worth the trouble, I can purchase a new one. I just want to be sure I
can use this SATA to USB converter thing to access the HDD drives.

Hard disk trouble

2010-09-03 Thread Ankur Sinha
hi,

I've plugged in my harddisk via a SATA/IDE to USB converter to my
laptop. The device is created as /dev/sdb, but fdisk -l or parted,
gparted do not show it as a drive.

Here's the dmesg output:

> scsi8 : usb-storage 1-2:1.0
> scsi 8:0:0:0: Direct-Access USB TO I DE/SATA Device 0041 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0

How do I access my drive? I intend to format it etc. and then set up
fedora 13 on it.

ONLY CPU ;)

no monitor, no keyboard or mouse. All I have is the CPU with a DVD

Is headless install via VNC still the solution?

The other (more complex I guess) alternative is:

- put the rpms in any folder.

- run createrepo (see man createrepo for details) - this will create a
repodata dir in the folder.

- add a repo file to /etc/yum.repos.d/

- perform the update

- remove the repo file and rpms directory

I haven't used the yum plugin that Frank suggested. I'm pretty sure
it'll be easier. I hope you have network enough to install that one
package :P

erm,

why a 2G boot? That's not needed IMO.

I use a 512M boot (which might be more than needed too)

I only make separate boot and home partitions, I let the rest be /.

vim-latex trouble

2010-07-30 Thread Ankur Sinha
hi,

I recently came across what looks like an awesome tool : vim-latex.

I've installed the fedora packages using yum.
[an...@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa | grep vim
vim-latex-doc-1.8.23-1.20100129.r1104.fc13.noarch
vim-latex-1.8.23-1.20100129.r1104.fc13.noarch
vim-minimal-7.2.411-1.fc13.x86_64
vim-common-7.2.411-1.fc13.x86_64
vim-vimoutliner-0.3.4-12.fc12.noarch
vim-enhanced-7.2.411-1.fc13.x86_64
vim-X11-7.2.411-1.fc13.x86_64

I'm trying to follow the official tutorial[1]. It doesn't seem to work.
The tutorial says : "If the installation went well, you should see a new
set of menus appear. Goto Tex-Suite > Templates." Creating a new file
newfile.tex doesn't cause this to happen. Am I missing out something?

On a related note, the tutorial is for the gui version of vim (vim-X11).
Would someone know how to use this on a terminal version of vim here?

hey,

An easy way to remove a recently installed package is using the "yum
history" command. Please look it up, seth has been posting about it
IIRC.

Just thought it was worth mentioning.

F 13 installation trouble

2010-07-20 Thread Ankur Sinha
hi,

I did a fresh text based install on my system today.

On boot, I get:

"Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block(0,0)"

Can you folks please tell me how to get around this? I googled up and
it looks like a grub issue or something, but I haven't been able to
correct it yet from the posts[1]. They speak of lilo, or of compiling
the kernel with modules or something. I'm installing from a Fedora 13
dvd, so I can't quite compile myself a kernel.

thanks,

regards,
Ankur
