I did some research and found the following kernel bug:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196683

Fedora has CONFIG_RCU_NOCB_CPU=y in the 4.15.8 kernel configuration so I
added "rcu_nocbs=0-7" to the boot parameters and it has been running stable
for a while. I have also added "nopti" as well as there is some anecdotal
evidence it improves stability but I'm not sure about that.

There is also some discussions in the bug page about old PSUs not providing
good enough low voltage, AMD is recommending running a newer PSU
(post-Haswell) but for the time being the boot config is working for me.

Does the screen freeze completely (e.g. the clock doesn't change)? Magic
SysRq doesn't work? Are you running Chromium by any chance?

I've been experiencing similar hangs, first with an AMD Phenom II processor
and recently with a Ryzen 5 2400G and a X370 motherboard. This morning I
left the computer unattended with Chromium and top open and top showed
Chromium taking 34% of the CPU around the crash time. Then I left the
computer unattended without running Chromium and ran happily for hours.

I might have a go at running Chromium with debug logs to see if I can see
anything unusual.

Reviewing the journal a few crashes ago I saw some Chromium errors
regarding GPU, might be a red herring though.

Frustrating.

I think that's the problem, I have:
GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT="gfxterm"

GRUB_GFXMODE="auto"

That works fine for a Full HD monitor.

I agree with Patrick. I use full system encryption (LUKS) and it is
very convenient as you only need to type the password once at boot and
then you forget it's there.

Adding to what Steven said clamav only checks for Windows viruses as
there is no malware for Linux as far as I know.

As long as you install your software from reputable sources (i.e.
Fedora repositories) and you keep it up to date you should be safe in
that sense.

Make sure your firewall is properly configured and blocks all ports
excepting the ones you need. There are online port scanners that can
help you verifying this.

As many others have already said I don't think this will work.

A smartphone is great on the go because it is light, portable and
always available in your pocket.

A tablet is great to use at home (or in a plane) to write some short
emails or to watch a movie.

A computer is great when you need to do some serious work, i.e. a
spreedsheet or a project plan with thousands of line. CAD. Image
processing.

Every device has its purpose and it is suboptimal outside it.

The same with the tools you use at home. A hammer is not suitable for
the same things as the screwdriver.

I see no real advantage of running the same OS on all devices. The way
things are at the moment there is already a decent level of
integration. I can read the same emails in all devices. I can chat
with people on all devices and switch on the fly. My contacts and
calendars are automatically synchronized. I use some great apps in my
mobile and I use some great apps in my desktop computer.

Well, that's the direction that Ubuntu is taking. I am not sure if
enough developers will embrace it so enough good quality mobile
applications are available compared to other platforms.

The way I see it Fedora is pushing to be the best desktop environment.
If this same desktop experience can be ported to a tablet or a mobile
is something that we have yet to see. Just because you can do it it
doesn't mean it is a good idea.

It is nothing to worry about, just GRUB complaining about a missing

KEYTABLE=... for vconsole.keymap=en (<-- Your locale)

Fully agree, specially when you are dealing with huge documents (i.e.
thesis) with multiple references. When I was working with other people
I used LaTeX with a version control system (e.g. Subversion) to manage
the different contributions. That was a real time saver compared to
merging Word files sent over email.

I also used latex-beamer for presentations, generating beautiful

I think it is. The LibreOffice is moving forward and making

You need to make the changes in /etc/default/grub, and then update the
Grub configuration. If you make the changes in /boot they will be
overwritten the next time you update the kernel.

So,
1. Make the changes in /etc/default/grub
2. Run grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/redhat/grub.conf (<--- only UEFI systems)

And that's it!

Hi!

The Fedora kernel (and actually any other distribution) has most of its
kernel options compiled as modules (not drivers). Why? Because it is
impossible for Fedora devs to know beforehand the hardware the computer
will run and people like to get their hardware up and running as soon as
they plug it in.

In any case, the kernel does not load modules on memory until they are
needed. So the only thing you are wasting is hard disk space (and not
really much). So you could save a few MB of hard drive by compiling your
own kernel and removing modules you are not going to use (floppy disks?)
but 1) you will spend a lot of time and 2) you may break something.

So my advice is: leave the kernel as is and take a look at unnecessary
services at boot.

I installed F18 in a Macbook Pro with Mac OS X in another partition and Mac
OS X shows up in Grub.

I am not sure if it is the task of the installer to set up booting other
operating systems. It is Grub that enables that. Grub2 looks for other
operating systems when updating its config and it should add them to the
menu "automagically".

To update Grub's config I run:

# grub2-mkconfig /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

(Note: I use Grub2 and BIOS, configuration for EFI is different)

Richard, most people here need some error message to point you in the right
direction.

I would look at /var/log/messages and at ~/.xsession-errors

I have the same setup and every time there is a grub update I run:
# grub2-install /dev/sda
# grub2-install /dev/sdb
being /dev/sda and /dev/sdb the two hard drives in the RAID. It is
important to install grub on /dev/sdb too because if /dev/sda fails your
system will not boot.

Re: fedup: it's full of stars

I had the same problem and what I did was to disable plymouth entirely when
upgrading. I edited the linux line in the System upgrade menu, removing the
plymouth theme option (I can't recall its exact name). Then it ran flawless.

That only updates Grub2 configuration (i.e. the entries in the menu). To
upgrade Grub2 you need to run:
#grub2-install /dev/sda

Change /dev/sda for whatever your primary hard drive is. In my case I use
/dev/sda and then /dev/sdb as I run a RAID mirror.

Upon boot you should see Grub 2.00 as version number instead of Grub
2.00-betaX that was the Fedora 17 version.

First of all please let us know the exact text of the message you get.

The last lines of /var/log/messages right after inserting the USB disk also
help.

You are right, I should have created a bug. I have just tried to reproduce
the problem and I couldn't. This time I only used Network Manager to define
the zones for each interface (they were already set) and the
firewall-config GUI application and it worked correctly. I believe I made a
mistake when checking if the port was open or not.

Re: firewall-applet

2013-01-16 Thread Jorge Martínez López
Hi!

I have tested firewall-applet in the desktop. I used it to open a port in
the home zone. Then I added my network interfaces to the home zone in
NetworkManager but it didn't work so I used the command line.

Since then firewalld is running happily and I haven't used the firewall
applet any more.

Cheers,
