Firefox Gnome cannot "save as" to a new folder

2011-05-03 Thread Mick M.
Hello;
  I am able to create a new folder under KDE using Firefox.

In Gnome I select "Save Page As" then "Create Folder"
I get the drop down box for 2 seconds and it closes.

KDE lets me enter a name for the folder, press the rectangle at the end, and
save.

This is F14 fully updated as of today.

Thanks

Firefox contrast

2011-05-02 Thread Mick M.
Hello;
   I am using the latest version of Firefox, under F14 fully updated and KDE.
What I would like to know is how to heighten the contrast of the drop down menu.
E.g. - bookmarks, the one under the cursor is very low contrast.

Normal is black on white, under the mouse cursor changes to white on light grey
- so it becomes invisible.

I have changed themes and skins to no avail.

Thanks

xsane error in F14

2010-12-03 Thread Mick M.
Hello list;
 I have an Epson Perfection 610 USb scanner.
It worked fine in earlier versions of fedora.
I just hooked in up in F14 and get the following errors in xsane:
"error during CMS conversion: could not open scanner ICM profile"
or
"Failed to start scanner: invalid argument"

I tried this as root as well as mick.

I tried the preferences/setup/color management and set all the CMS lines to:
"/usr/share/ImageMagick-6.6.4/config/sRGB.icm"

If I enable color management, exit and restart xsane, I get:
"Error during CMS conversion: could not create transform.

Any ideas?
This is a fully updated F14 x64 box.

Hitachi Tablet Digitizer

Hi;
 I just got an old digitizer tablet.
Hitachi HDG-405J-SR.

It seems to be either RF or Ultrasound, as the stylus is powered and wireless.

Is there any way to get this working under F13?

Yes - that is the make error that I ran into.
When you run it you have 3 choices for input:
File -> device->SoundCard, ProbeScope and BitScope.

Soundcard gives 'opening /dev/dsp "no such file or directory"'

/dev is totally different now, there is no /dev/dsp.
There is a /dev/snd directory, with no obvious correlation to /dev/dsp.

OT: soundcard Oscilloscope.

2010-08-16 Thread Mick M.
Hi;
  I am trying to get a soundcard software scope to work in F13.
So far no luck, dependency hell or missing libraries.

I found some windows based ones.
I have XP in Virtualbox, but it cannot talk to the sound card.

I will be getting a DSO Nano soon, so this is a temporary fix.
This is a FOSS device from Dangerous Prototypes and Seeed Studios.

So if you have managed to get one working - please share.

F13 x64 Dolphin Details displays double-spaced

Hi;
  I just started to get some folders displaying as double-spaced in dolphin.
I always use 'details' as default mode.

I have no idea how this happened, it is only on some folders.
I can see no difference in these folders from others that display fine.

Dolphin -> help -> about dolphin = version 1.4 using KDE 4.45

The system is fully updated as of just before this post.

I am running F13 also, and had the same problem.

I copied these files from acroread (/opt/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/lib)
to my /usr/lib directory. I'm sure you can find them elsewhere, but I already
had acroread, so that was convenient for me.

You will actually need to add two files to /usr/lib:

libssl.so.0.9.8
libcrypto.so.0.9.8

Yes, I know, that is why I asked for help, and tried to 'yum install' the
library.

I was hoping someone on this list was using Eagle for PCB design.
Or failing that had a recommendation for another, Fedora-friendly package.
I need to be able import files from the open source arduino projects.
They all seem to be in that format.

Yes - I know how rpm and yum work.

BTW I tried to install the libraries and they were not found.
So it looks like I will have to build an Ubuntu box to do this.

Anyway - thanks for replying Sam.

Try this:
open a terminal
'su -' become root

'fdisk -l'  see existing drives
plug your stick in
'fdisk -l'  find your drive

'dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb' clears out the MBR ans the partition table.
let it run for a while.

Then:
'fdisk /dev/sdc'
'n enter' creates a new part
'p enter'  primary
'1 enter'  partition number
'enter'start at 1
'enter'last cylinder
'a'make it active so you can boot it
'1'partition number 1
'p'print it to screen and make sure it looks ok
'w'write it out

Then: 'mke2fs -j /dev/sdb1 -L 8G-USB'
Unplug it and plug it back in, it should be detected as '8G-USB'

Sorry if this is too simplistic, no insult intended.
The key step is the 'dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb'

how to play media files on NAS

Hi;

VLC will play the ftp://, but ...

Your input can't be opened:

This is the same for .mp3 files as well as .mp4.

Mplayer will play all media files using both ftp and smb.
I am used to kaffeine and VLC and would like to use them.

Any ideas?

I had read that page, and the help screens from within VBox.
They did not help.

The problem turned out to be a mouse.
I have a Kensington trackball USB mouse.
Vbox saw it, but it was greyed-out like the memory stick.

There was no vbox filter for it, so I added one.
When I fired up vbox it stole the mouse and locked it.
I ended up using a PS/2 to USB adapter and removing the vbox mouse filter.

All is now well.

VirtualBox-3.2-3.2.6_63112_fedora13-1.x86_64

I cannot install the OSE version as "there is no module for this kernel"

My userneme is mick, mick is a member of mick(500), usb(503), vboxusers(504).

I have a line in fstab:
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs  devgid=503,devmode=66400

In VirtualBox -> USB All boxes are checked.
It sees "Kingston DataTraveller 2.0 (0200)", is dark text and seems normal.

Top line: Devices -> USB Devices - the Kingston is there but greyed out.
Bottom line hover over USB symbol "NO USB devices attached"

OT:burn - not install to usb

Hi;
  I found a couple of 16MB usb sticks in a drawer.
I have the latest systemrescuecd and want to "burn" it to the USB stick.
An install needs > 512MB, this is only 16M.

I tried using dd but it would not boot.

To be clear I want the USB stick to act like a blank cd.
Is this possible?

OT (maybe) print server

2010-06-06 Thread Mick M.
Hi;
 I have a small footprint, spare computer that I want to make into a print
server.
1.3Ghz and 256M ram, with hard drive and CD.

Could you recommend a distribution for this?
It will be a wired RJ45 connection, 1284 and USB printers.

Mick M.

Thanks for the reply.
I ended up donating the printer (and 4 new cartridges).
Then bought a printer on eBay.
The adapters are almost as expensive as a printer.

I have a print server with USB already.

It just seems strange that the hardware support just vanished for the adapter
cables,(eBay still has lots of them for sale.)

USB to parallel port printer adapter does not work anymore. (F13)

2010-06-02 Thread Mick M.
Hi;
 I have two of these which worked fine in older releases

[r...@localhost ~]# lsusb
Bus 005 Device 002: ID 04b8:0002 Seiko Epson Corp. ISD Smart Cable for Mac

[r...@localhost ~]# lsusb
Bus 005 Device 003: ID 05ab:0002 In-System Design Parallel Port

I downloaded kernel 2.6.34 from kernel.org.
I cannot find the checkbox in 'make xconfig'
Has support for these been removed?

I have an HP lasejet 3p which is now a room-warmer/paperweight.
Any help appreciated.

Thanks.
I read the thread and sure enough U3 removal is windows only.

I had tried dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc
Also fdisk delete and recreate as ext2, gparted and parted.

The problem was still there.
I tried to run it under wine - no-go.
So you HAVE to boot into windows to get rid of it.

Kingston for me from now on.

Sandisk USB stick with U3

2010-03-14 Thread Mick M.
Hello;
  I had a friend come over with a USB stick.
I had put Mint linux on his laptop, and now he could not write to the stick.

I realized it was a Sandisk with their stupid U3.exe stuff on it.
I went through this last year and used a Windows program to remove the U3 stuff
and reformat it.

Is there any way to do this in Linux?

I remember I used fdisk to make it ext2, and formatted it.
It still would not work.

Media palyers in KDE hide mouse cursor

2010-03-04 Thread Mick M.
Hi;
 I have noticed that all the media players in KDE hide the mouse cursor.
Not only that they appear to disable it for a while.
If you play a video file and move the cursor over the video it vanishes.
You have to wiggle the mouse like mad to get it back.

How do I turn the is feature off?
I am using the classic KDE cursor font.

(F12z64 fully updated)

Hi Paul - yes I tried that.
It should "just work" - it did in F10 and F11.

USB to Parallel printer cable F12 x64

2010-02-17 Thread Mick M.
Hello list;
  I have an older HP laserjet IIIP printer.
It has serial and Parallel connectors only.
Of course my MB only has USB.
I have a couple of USB to Parallel smart cables.

I have been using an
"Belkin USB F5U002 "
lsusb: "Bus 006 Device 003: ID 05ab:0002 In-System Design Parallel Port"
, with success.

The other is:
"Epson USB Adapter" (model # ISD-103) smart cable
lsusb: "Bus 005 Device 004: ID 04b8:0002 Seiko Epson Corp. ISD Smart Cable for
Mac"

I just put the printer on my F12 box and cannot get it to work.
I had a USB printer working here just fine, so printing works.

lsusb:
Bus 006 Device 003: ID 05ab:0002 In-System Design Parallel Port

This worked fine under Fedora 9/10/11 but not 12.
I am running F12 x64 fully updated.
When I run system-config-printer it is not detected.
It will not let me add a printer.

I tried power-cycling the printer, reseating the USB plug etc.

It seems that the printer setup is invisible to the user now.
What happened to the pull-down list of printers?

KDE Info center -> USB Devices shows:

Class 0((Defined at Interface level))
Subclass0
Protocol0
USB Version 1.00

Vendor ID 0x5ab (In-System Design)
Product ID 0x2 (Parallel Port)
Revision 1.04

Speed 12 Mbit/s
Channels 0
Max. Packet Size 0

The printer is connected and powered up.

Plugging/unplugging the Epson cable /var/log/messages:

[r...@localhost ~]# tail /var/log/messages

(yes those funny chars are on the screen)

So how do you connect a parallel printer to a USB port and make it work now?

Thanks
  Mick M.
