Re: security in firefox4

2011-05-18 Thread bruce
umm.. no.

it doesn't stop tracking, unless the website you're looking at has
agreed to not track you!!

the tracking thing is purely voluntary and happens on the
serverside/ad network side...

all the tracking check does is kind of ask the site to now track you!!

no guarantee that won't happen..

if you really don't want to be tracked. clean out your cookies
regularly, as well as change your dynamic ip address every couple of
hours...

there you go!

firefox question

2011-06-18 Thread bruce
Hi.

Sorry this is off topic, but can't find a soln any other way.

Got FF v.4 running, and I'm trying to figure out how to simply type
something like "sdfsdfv" in the Url/Address bar, and not have FF
append a ".com" to it!

I changed the browser.URL to stop FF from using a search engine when
"stuff" is typed in the browser...

Pointers/Links would be useful.

Thanks

fedora13 - mouse IBeam change

2011-01-03 Thread bruce
Hi.

down vote favorite

hi.

sorry to have to ask such a basic question!! i've got fedora 13,
trying to figure out how to change the "I Beam" pointer.

earlier, i had a "thin" "I Beam" pointer in my gedit/term windows.
now, I have a "thicker/shadow" kind of "I Beam" pointer when i move
the mouse over the gedit/term windows.

obviously, i've made some change, but i can't figure out what I
changed, or where this attribute is set. i've checked google/irc, as
well as looked through the "system-preferences-appearance" with no
luck.. i saw the customize part of the gui, and could resize the
"arrow" but nothing for the "I-Beam".

in one of my older boxes, the "thin" I Beam pointer is working, so
it's something I've done...

this isn't critical, but it is anoying!!

any thoughts/pointers would be helpful.

thanks

Re: wifi troubleshooting

2011-03-28 Thread bruce
Hi Adam.

Since you have a usb port, do you have a separate usb/wireless dongle that
you can insert in the usb port to see if it gets recognized by the OS.

you can get cheap dlink wireless dongles to test (and then take back to the
store!!).

I've always got a cheap dlink to use as a test for usb ports.

i think it's time to start at the basics, to isolate your issues here.

Re: Can I install a 64-bit kernel on a F16 32-bit system

are you saying you want a 32 bit and a 64 bit os to run side by side,
ie to boot in one, and then the other, with different partitions?

or are you asking to run a mix of 32/64 apps?

can you clarify what you're looking to accomplish?

thanks

Re: Installing fedora on dell inspiron 15

2010-10-14 Thread bruce
Hi.

Saw your msg. I've successfully gotten F13 running on a 17" n7010
inspiron laptop.

Never could get the Centos 5.5 to install from DVD.

My issues:
-xorg, for monitor, --ensure that i have a blank xorg.conf in the
/etc/X11 dir and things seem to work ok, if i had a test xorg.conf,
the display screwed up
-my wireless -broadcom chipset.. -- needed to install the broadcom
solution that i found via google. basically, you're patching the
system to handle the chipset
- my wired Attansic chipset. --once i ran the updates, it appeared to
pull in the required updates to where it managed/found the Attansic
ether controller

when you're going to install, i'd recommend having a cheap usb
wireless adapter that the OS will recognize. this will always get you
the net connection when you're troubleshooting.

Re: Installing fedora on dell inspiron 15

2010-10-14 Thread bruce
Sumatheja,

In my case, I was never able to get Centos 5 to install using the livecd/dvd.

fedora 13 worked from the dvd, although the issues i mentioned had to
be dealt with.

i'm not sure that the updated functions/drivers in f13 could be
backported to centos5, and i have no idea if centos 6 would solve the
issues either. it might even be, that there are/is an external repos
that can be used for centos 5 to solve the issues..

good luck

trying to listen to streaming music, how can i figure out the ip address of the stream

2010-10-19 Thread bruce
hey...

Using Fedora 13, trying to figure out how to determine the stream ip
address to plug the address into one of the music apps.

a number of the sites apparently still believe that windows/media is
the way to go.

some of the sites i've seen discuss modifying firefox/plugins, but the
approaches didn't work for me.

i'm running 64 bit

any thoughts/suggestions?

Re: trying to listen to streaming music, how can i figure out the ip address of the stream

2010-10-19 Thread bruce
thanks for all the input.

i was/am actually looking to be able to somehow extract the
ip/addresses of the stream as it's played from the windows/media site.

as an aexample, i'm looking for the ip/address of the wbls/kjlh/kmel stations.

the given sites provide the embedded player, but of course, only for windows.

i'm curious to see if one can simply play the url, if one knows the
url of the stream!

thanks

vmware - virtual machine issue/question

2010-11-04 Thread bruce
Hey guys.

Might be a little off topic, but I'm not sure exactly how to proceed on this.

I'm evaluating/investigating vmware, and how you create a "virtual
machine" using the command line for fedora/centos.

Basically, I want to be able to create a test virtual machine and then
be able to run the VM on another system using the virtual player.

I'm looking for pointers/articles/instructions that detail what I need
(in terms of tools/apps) and the steps needed to accomplish this.

I've seen a few articles/sites that discuss creating virtual machines,
but they all involve using the GUI.

There are different tools/apps provided to create a Virtual Machine,
but I'm not sure which to use.

Basically, I want to do a test, to ultimately have a Virtual
Machine/Image that can be run on a separate server using the vmplayer
app

I've seen docs that discuss using the GUI to create the VM, but
haven't found any (yet) that discuss how to accomplish this using the
command line approach.

So::

If I have a system with two drives

DriveA, DriveB

DriveA has my regular OS,

>From DriveA, I install an OS onto DriveB, along with any additional files I
>need

DriveB is then the system that I want to use as the basis of the new
Virtual Machine/image

So I need to figure out how to create the VM from the cmdline.
(here is where I'm looking to get a feel for the actual cmds/processes to run)

And once I create the VM, I'll deal with the issue of running the VM
from the vmplayer/client side.

Hope this clears things up a bit.

Pointers/Comments would be helpful.

Thanks

hey.

sorry, but i'm looking for basic/pretty complete step by step
processes on how to create the VM, and install the OS, or rather
create the VM of a specific partition/drive.

so i'm looking to talk to someone who's actually done this.

thanks.

automate installing Fedora into VMWare using scripts

2010-11-07 Thread bruce
hi.

Trying to understand/figure out if it's possible to install fedora
into a vmware/vmdk virtual machine, using the cmdline/script process.

I can create the basic vmdk/vmx files using the something like:

  -set vdiskman="C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware
Workstation\vmware-vdiskmanager.exe"
  -set player="C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Workstation\vmplayer.exe"

  -md centos
  -%vdiskman% -c -s 20GB -a lsilogic -t 0 centos\centos.vmdk

  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx config.version = "8"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx virtualHW.version = "7"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx scsi0.present = "TRUE"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx scsi0.virtualDev = "lsilogic"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx memsize = "1024"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx scsi0:0.present = "TRUE"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx scsi0:0.fileName = "CentOS.vmdk"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx ide1:0.present = "TRUE"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx ide1:0.autodetect = "TRUE"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx ide1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-raw"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx floppy0.startConnected = "FALSE"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx floppy0.fileName = ""
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx floppy0.autodetect = "TRUE"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx ethernet0.present = "TRUE"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx ethernet0.connectionType = "nat"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx ethernet0.wakeOnPcktRcv = "FALSE"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx ethernet0.addressType = "generated"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx usb.present = "TRUE"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx ehci.present = "TRUE"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx sound.present = "TRUE"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx serial0.present = "false"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx pciBridge0.present = "TRUE"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx vmci0.present = "false"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx displayName = "CentOS"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx guestOS = "centos"
  -echo >> centos\centos.vmx nvram = "CentOS.nvram"

  -%player% centos\centos.vmx

But then, I'm not sure what the next steps should be. At this point, I
think I have a virtual disk, so I'm wondering if it's possible to
somehow do an install into the VM/disk using yum.

Someone had mentioned that all I need to do is:
step 3 : launch the VM from the install-media
step 4 : interact with the VM and install it as needed
But the person neglected to state what the steps/process should be.

My goal is to be able to have a completely automated/scripted process
that doesn't require manual intervention.

My ultimate goal is to be able to have a VM of Fedora, that can then
be run using the vmplayer.

Any pointers/comments are welcome.

Re: Fedora 14 Kickstart Problems

2010-11-08 Thread bruce
Hi Bernd/Others.

I'm interested in this issue as well, as I'm looking to try to figure
out how to automatically/install/boot a vmware Virtual Machine (VM)
from the cli/script process.

More data/pointers would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!!!

mkiosfs question

2010-11-08 Thread bruce
Hey.

Got a question regarding the iso file.

I can do a mount of the iso, and get a r/w tree/dir of files.

i can then modify/add a file as needed.

but if i want to recreate the iso file, do i simply run the mkisofs on the tree.

>> mkisofs -R -b boot/isolinux/isolinux.bin -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size \
4 -boot-info-table -c boot/isolinux/boot.cat -iso-level 3 -o
livecd.iso isofiles/

where isofiles/ is the dir with the tree/dir of the iso files from the
initial iso

will the above get me back to an iso that can be used to boot up from
(assuming i don't screw up any critical file for the iso)

thanks

repacking/making an iso from vmware autoinst.iso

2010-11-11 Thread bruce
Hi.

testing with vmware's vmplayer. trying to figure out how to mount the
autoinst.iso that it provides, to change the contents of the ks.cfg
file, and to then repack to the iso.

thought this was a simple mkisofs issue, but i appear to be missing something.

the cmds:
mount -o loop /apps/vmware/a1/autoinst.iso /mnt/vmtest

/bin/cp -Rf /mnt/vmtest/* /apps/vmtest/vm/.

 sed -i 's/^telinit.*/telinit 0/' /apps/vmtest/vm/ks.cfg

cd /apps/vmtest/vm
mkisofs -o /apps/vmtest/autoinst.iso -b
/apps/vmtest/vm/isolinux/isolinux.bin -c
/apps/vmtest/vm/isolinux/boot.cat -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4
-boot-info-table -J -R -V /apps/vmtest/vm

results in error of:::

I: -input-charset not specified, using utf-8 (detected in locale settings)
call to search_tree_file with an absolute path, stripping
initial path separator. Hope this was intended...
genisoimage: Uh oh, I cant find the boot catalog directory

Re: Any Dittoheads out there?

2010-11-25 Thread bruce
hey.

it's doable. you're going to have to determine how much work is required.

it might be as easy as looking at the html from the browser.

it might be as difficult as firing up livehttp headers, and creating a
script that simulates some ugly clientside javscript with multiple
cookies.

bottom line, it's doable.

do a search for browser scraping lxml javascript etc...

good luck!!

Re: Distributing a Fedora appliance

hey,

not a lawyer, but i doubt if anyone else replying here is either.

but i've gotten plenty of VMs from different sites that people have
used different linux OS (fedora/centos/debian/et...) and i've never
gotten the source in the VM, I have at times seen/reviewed docs that
have pointed me to where I could go to get the source for the OS if I
wanted it.

your mileage might vary.

Re: Belkin Wireless USB Adapter not working

2010-12-12 Thread bruce
hi suru

if i understand, ypu have a usb belkin/wireless dongle

you're running fedora 13

are you running system-config-network? does this cmd work from the cmdline?

if you can run the cmd, run it, try to set up a new wireless
connection/interface and see if the belkin/usb is seen from your
system.

if it's not, you're going to nees to run lsusb, to see what (if
anything) fedora is seeing for the usb dongle

let us know what you see/find..

ssh tunneling

2013-09-11 Thread bruce
Hi.

Not sure if this is the right list, but I'm trying to figure out how
to allow an app running on an external machine to be setup to access a
"port"/app running on another machine through a ssh tunnel...

machine A is the machine running an app located on port 4725
machine A is running sshd, and I can ssh into it

machine B is the client machine, running a test app that wants to
connect to port 4725 via the foo app.
machine b can ssh into machine A by doing ssh fuser@1.2.3.4 and giving
the password

when foo runs on machine B, it's looking to connect to port 4725, so
I'm trying to figure out how to allow port 4725 from machine A to be
forwarded through to port 4725 in machine B...

any pointers would be useful

thanks

ssh portforwarding, running test client/server over tunnel

2013-09-13 Thread bruce
Hi.

Trying to setup a quick test to create a ssh tunnel between A and B,
and running a test nc server over the ssh connection on port 7100..

As far as I can tell, it should be a matter of setting up the port
forwarding between A and B and then running the test server/client on
the A and B machines..

now, the tricky part, the target "B" machine is being run on a VM, so
the port isn't 22..

I used the following to setup the port forwarding:

ssh -L 7100:74.142.196.218:7100 user@74.142.196.218 -p 50122
so being on machine A, the local machine, I setup the ssh tunnel into
machine B, where B is the VM, running ssh over port 50122

this part appears to work.

However, when I then run a test nc server on both machines using port
7100, I get the following:

machine B:
nc -l 7100

machine A
nc localhost 7100

which causes the machine B to display a crash
>>>channel 3: open failed: connect failed: Connection refused <<<

any ideas/thoughts???

I'm ultimately looking to run a gearman server running on port X and
being able to create a ssh tunnel into the server to access the port.

thanks

mail from the command line ??

2013-09-14 Thread bruce
Hi.

Really basic question here, and I've seen 100s of articles on this

if you want to send a test email from the commandline, using an
external smtp for validation/authentication, what's the "best" app to
use? Mail, Nail, Sendmail, etc..

I've seen different articles/people saying different things, so I
thought I'd create a thread here for others to be able to see as
well..

Thanks

Re: mail from the command line ??

2013-09-14 Thread bruce
as a test, I have mailx (also have sendmail)

based on a couple of websites/articles, I've created the following.

/root/.mailrc
set smtp-use-starttls
set nss-config-dir=~/.mozilla/firefox/kbatbh5m.default/
set ssl-verify=ignore
set smtp=smtp://smtp.mail.yahoo.com:465
set smtp-auth=login
set smtp-auth-user=uscfish
set smtp-auth-password=passwd1
set from="uscf...@yahoo.com(tom)"

[root@dell-1 cacti]# echo "test" | mailx -vvv -s "tst1" "ti...@gmail.com"
Resolving host smtp.mail.yahoo.com . . . done.
Connecting to 63.250.193.228:465 . . . connected.
Unexpected EOF on SMTP connection
"/root/dead.letter" 11/301
. . . message not sent.
[root@dell-1 cacti]#

I also tried to run the following full command with the same err..

echo "test" | mailx -s "SUBJECT1" -S
smtp=smtp://smtp.mail.yahoo.com:465 -S smtp-auth=login -S
smtp-auth-user=uscfish -S smtp-auth-password=passwd -S from="tom
" ti...@gmail.com

I can't figure out where to go to get additional insight for the errs..

thanks

Re: mail from the command line ??

2013-09-14 Thread bruce
the process that i described works pretty much as i expect if i
substitue gmail - smtp.gmail.com:587 and the required/updated
user/passwd...

so it appears to be a yahoo issue.

either I don't have the correct smtp port (I think I do), or some
other attribute is screwed up.

long running ssh function without tying up a term?

2013-09-15 Thread bruce
Hi.

Got a situation where I have a machine A connecting to machine B, by
way of a reverese SSH connection. I also want to have a machine C be
able to connect to machine B, and then connect to machine A..

My issue/question.. the initial reverese SSH from A-> B needs to be
created, and then left alone, to run as long as required.. might be
hours/days...

but on machine A, I don't want to create a term, just for the sake of
running the reverse SSH.. I'd like to have a way of running the
reverse SSH, and then not having the term stick around..

I've looked at Screen/nohup but couldn't see a way to make this work..

Thoughts/comments appreciated.

Thanks

sshpass -p pass ssh -R 2000:localhost:22 u...@foo.com -p 50122

-creates the initial reverse ssh, but it leaves the opened
term/connection as well

-I'd like to basically create the connection/process/port on machineB,
and but machine A's connection in the background so to speak, as
opposed to having a term session sitting around.

thanks

ssh/port forwarding - listening by multiple clients

2013-09-16 Thread bruce
hi..

Trying to see if ssh/port forwarding can be used to solve a prob.

I want to have multiple clients connected to a single master server

The masterServer/app is providing data on port X

The clientNodes/apps should then listen on port X

ssh allows for port forwarding, but I can't figure out how to
accomplish this using ssh/port forwarding.

I've tried using :
ssh -L 8000:localhost:8000 b...@foo.com -p abc
as foo.com:abc is the vm ip/port that's the server app

I then did a test using nc

where on the serverside, i did a

nc -l 8000, and got an err msg indicating the port was already in use

port 8000 is the port the server app sends data on, and is the port
I'd like to listen on on the clientnodes/apps..

pointers/comments are more than welcome!

Re: ssh/port forwarding - listening by multiple clients

2013-09-16 Thread bruce
hey kevin, et al

here's my test:

masterServer [vm running on foo.com:50122]
 |
 +--- clientServerA localhost/7100
 |
 +--- clientServerB localhost/7100

on the clients, I run
 ssh -N -f -L 7100:127.0.0.1:7100 u...@foo.com -p 50122
which establishes the connection to the maser server on the clients

now, as a test, I fire up nc on all servers

so for masterServer, I have
  nc -l 7100

and on the clients, I have
  nc localhost 7100

and on the masterServer.. I then type "foofoo"

and I get the same "foofoo" on only one of the clients.. I'm trying to
figure out a way to get content to "both" clients, not at the same
time.. but I'd like to be able to verify that both clients are
actually able to access data from port 7100..

my reall goal, is to have a gearman server running on the masterside,
with gearman clients running on thew clientservers... and having the
gearman clients talking to the master gearman posrt via the ssh
connection...

thanks

ssh reverse port forwarding - ssh keys

2013-09-17 Thread bruce
Hey...

testing out ssh port forwarding/reverse tunneling using sshkeys

i've got the process of going from machineA to machineB using keys..

The test doing ssh u...@foo.com -p 5011 works
 - auto login using the ssh keys..

However, the test of going from machineB to machineB is a bit chaotic.

I've created the private/pub rsa key.. on the machineB for the user
that will conduct the ssh connections, the id_rsa key was updated with
the private key.

The test then updated the machineA for the specified user with the
updated pub key in the authorized_keys file

The test also ensured the perms/owners on the machineA are correct.

the issue I'm having is that the test is still requiring a password to
complete the ssh session.

I'm not sure if I have to do something else to the machineB given that
the port forwarding/reverse tunnel essentially maps the port of the
localhost to the port of machineA

on machineB
 ssh tom@localhost -p 1999

which should use the private/pub keys to go through the tunnel to get
back to machineA

however, the process currently still asks for the password...

thoughts/suggestions...

port forwarding

2013-09-20 Thread bruce
Hi.

I'm dealing with a issue involving port forwarding. I've got part of
it working, trying to get the rest.

for now:
 I have a serverside machine:
-runs the gearmand daemon on localhost port 4730
-runs the server.php - on ip localhost port 4730
-also runs the portforwarding which is created on the clientside to
connect to
 localhost:4730
-the test server is runs on a machine as user foo@192.168.5.12

on the clientside machine
-runs the client.php - which runs on localhost port 4730
-also runs the ssh port forwarding process as follows
 ssh -f -L - N 4730:localhost:4730 foo@192.168.5.12 -p 22
-the client is running on 192.168.5.14

Everything above works... I can run a serverside process, and the
clientside workers get the data from the queue on localhost:4730

I'd like to be able to change the ip adress of the gearman processes
from localhost, to the actual ipaddress of the machine. This of course
involves changing the port forwarding from the client to the server
machine.

Thoughts/Comments would be useful.

ssh - config setup file conflict??

2013-09-23 Thread bruce
Testing out setting up ssh - using priv/pub keys

The test config file

cat /home/foo/.ssh/config
HostName 192.168.5.18
User foo
IdentityFile /home/foo/id_rsa_foo

i can ssh foo@192.168.5.18 with no issue, works as it should

however, any other ssh is also intercepted by the config file..
ie
ssh abc@123.456 comes back with a
"ssh: connect to host 192.168.5.18 port 50122: Connection refused"

but if i do a ssh -i id_rsa_foo abc@123.456 the connection is accepted/connects

it appears the config file is somehow screwing things up...

so how can the config be setup to only be used for the specified
"hostname" and to not be used if the targeted domain isn't in the
config file...

ssh - server->target

2013-09-23 Thread bruce
Hi.

testing priv/pub keys...

working on a local server, behind firewall, with it's own dhcp ip. the
external wan ip is not the same as the internal ip.

create the priv/pub key for the local server
the normal ssh u...@target.com works

change the local eth0 ipaddress...
rerun the ssh u...@target.com works as expected...

so, changing local eth0/ipaddress doesn't require changing the priv/pub keypair

however, the one thing I haven't tested, is to be able to change the
external ipaddress of either the local/target server..

I'm of the opinion that this wouldn't change the priv/pub key, but I
might be missing something..

thoughts/comments?

Re: ssh / gearman issue

2013-10-07 Thread bruce
Hi.

Looking at a trying to work/walk through a problem.

I have a gearman daemon/server app running on a master machine. The
master gearman process places the jobs on the queue as a background
process, ie it doesn't wait for a return from the worker/child app.

I also have 10-20 client machines, that are workers/children of the
master gearman process.

All of the machines are connected, via ssh (bidirectional).

The local/client machines/apps can easily recieve the jobs from the
master process.

However, I'm considering an issue where I want the client processes to
be able to return their results back to the master when the client
apps have completed their work.

So, as far as I can tell, I've got a couple of potential approaches:

--I can have the client push the returned data back to the master
system, via ssh, where I invoke a remote process running on the master
system

--I could implement a webservice kind of approach and pass the
returned packets back via the service

-I was wondering if it wwould be possible to have each client app also
act as a gearman master app, with all the client apps running on the
same localhost/port, and then using the ssh forwarding process, have
all the clients be received by an app running as a worker on the
masterside.

The masterside would have to have the ssh tunneling/forwarding setup
to "listen" to the same port on all of the client systems... (Is this
even possible, without conflicts??) I ran a short test with two
different clients and a 3rd master app to listen/process the
work/jobs, and got a port conflict error, but it could have been due
to something not being configured correctly.

Thoughts/comments??

Thanks

dl-604 as a switch/hub

2013-10-09 Thread bruce
Greetings!

I know this isn't strictly a fedora issue! But I'm trying to setup (if
possible) an old dlink dl-604 4 port router as a dumb switch/hub.

Basically, all I want to be able to do is plug the device into my
network, and then plug 2-3 additional fedora boxes into the 4ports

I've disabled the dhcp settings on the box:
-set the static ip of the box to be 192.168.5.200
-set the gateway to be 192.168.5.254
-set the dns to be 8.8.8.8 (google)
-turned off every filter I could find
-plug the computers/main eth into the lan ports only

the network for this system/test already uses dhcp on 192.168.5.x
the 1923.168.5.200 isn't used so using it for the box should be ok.

the issue I have, is that I can only see one of the boxes when I plug
both in, as if there's a conflict of some sort. Pluging one or the
otther works, so I know the boxes/eth cards are ok.

Thoughts/comments...

thanks!

The basic setup would be:

dlink :dl-604
   eth: 192.168.5.200 <<+
   ^
   ^
dell-1 ^
   eth: 192.168.5.14  ->>>  ^

dell-1 ^
   eth: 192.168.5.17 >>>^
^
^
^
main eth >>>+

I've seen a great deal of 'net articles that state this should be
easily doable. So I'm not sure of what the exact issue is.

Appreciate any pointers/comments..

Re: dl-604 as a switch/hub

2013-10-09 Thread bruce
hey kevin.

thanks for the reply.

on the dlink/dl-604 - I'm not using the wan port at all.

I have all cables connected via the lan ports. And for my setup, this
isn't a home dsl/cable issue. This is enterprise, but the main eth is
fed to one of the lan ports. The netmask for the static IP of the
device is 255.255.255.0 which is correct.

but here's the weird thing.. I unplugged the device for 10-15 mins..
and then turned it back on with everything plugged back in.. ran nmap
from another box and after a few mins.. the dells from the 604
were/are working.. I've shut everything down, powered back up as a
quick check.. and everything is running as expected..

the 192.168.5.254 gateway address is what i get when i do a "route
-nee" from one of the current machines on the network. so this should
be ok for the 604 as well.

thanks

trying to do a simple/redirect curl

2013-10-18 Thread bruce
Hi.

Trying to get curl (or wget) to work on the following.

curl  -A "User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US;
rv:1.9.2.12) Gecko/20101026 Firefox/3.6.12" -L
"https://webapp4.asu.edu/catalog/classlist?s=AST&t=2137&e=all&hon=F";

>>> response curl: (47) SSL read: errno -5961

I 've tried a couple of diff browsers (FF/Opera) running without
cookies/javascript and the browser eventually returns the data.

can't seem to figure out what I'm missing from the curl though.

thoughts/comments?

Re: ssl/certificate issue for website

2013-11-01 Thread bruce
hmm...

not sure the "--insecure -k" option is the right/best approach for
this. although it does work..

As far as I can tell, it should be possible to download the "pem"/cert
from the site, via FF, and to then use this data in the curl..

However, I can't quite get this to work correctly. Might be user error.

Here's what I've done so far.

the base curl cmd is:
curl -A "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.11)
Gecko/2009061118 Fedora/3.0.11-1.fc9 Firefox/3.0.11" --cookie-jar
wayne.lwp --cookie wayne.lwp -L
"https://isiscc.smc.edu/pls/apex/f?p=123:1:3916268190676791"; -vvv

running on fedora/centos as test systems

1) inserted the base site
>>https://isiscc.smc.edu/pls/apex/f?p=123:1:3916268190676791 into the
FF address bar.
2) selected the "lock" at the left of the address bar, to get the cert/data
3) did an export of the pem/cert data. -[not the chain]
4) as far as I can tell, from the debug "-vvv" output,
  * Initializing NSS with certpath: /etc/pki/nssdb
  *   CAfile: /etc/pki/tls/certs/ca-bundle.crt
the ca-bundle is the file with the certs.

I then copied the data from the foo.pem that I got from the smc
site/pem and added the results to the end of the ca-bundle.crt file

I then reran the curl cmd, and got the same errors I got before..

So 1) Is the pem file I downloaded, the correct cert file for the
site, and 2) Is the ca-bundle.crt file the correct file to append the
data to/in. Or is there some different file that I should be doing the
insertion of the downloaded pem/cert data.

Once all of this works, I'll place this in stackoverflow for others!

thanks

Hey Michael!!

Ok.

I tried to extract the pem as you suggested, placed it in a diff dir..
it works...

So I've got a couple of questions... How did you know which cert/pem
file to extract? Why didn't my attempt at getting the cert from the
"lock" of the url/address for the smc.edu site not work?

Also, any idea what I can do regarding the access/path errors I mentioned...

thanks

guys...

as a face saving process... always test what ever you're going to do
when using RM <<< and then substitute ls for rm to see what the

and finally, before you do a "rm" .. make sure you have a complete
backup that you can restore from, in the event you really do trash

Weird returned page from curl cmd

2013-04-03 Thread bruce
Hi.

Trying to do a simple curl fetch of a page. I get the data, but when I
compare the page to what I see in the FF/Opera browser, I get a difference.

The key section on the browser is:

  51% Men, 49% Women

The same section from the curl is:

51.02081505702209%

 Men,

48.97918494297791%

 Women

The actual test curl cmd I use is:

  curl -o "dee.txt"
http://www.collegeview.com/schoolfacts/auburn-university-main-campus/figures

It appears that the "%" causes some sort of expansion/rounding to occur in
the data...

Is there an attribute I should invoke that I missed. Didn't see anything
when I scanned the man pages, or looked over google...

Thanks

Re: Weird returned page from curl cmd

2013-04-03 Thread bruce
to all the curl/fedora guys...

the solution

The expansion isn't done by curl, but by the server based on the request
headers.

If I add: -H "Accept-Language: en-EN"
to the command line I get the expected "51%".

Re: suggestions for linux laptop

2013-05-15 Thread bruce
umm...

what's the price point?

I've seen perfectly good systems on different Craigslist (depends on city,
gotta verify them).

I've also seen perfectly good systems on different auction systems, and
purchased a number of systems from some of them over the years, although,
never got anything from ebay.

If you do go the auction route, try to find the auctions that deal with
upgraded systems from companies/gov operations..

Ranjan...

I take it you're not in the US?

I just saw an auction.. where 30 HP 2.8 AMD dual core/4G went for 2200
total.. now these had no drives.. but you can get drives for 40.. you could
have had a nice cluster.. and sold the rest to make some cash!!

i think he was looking for reassurance (not condescension) as to the
actions he has to take, or exactly what he has to type to resolve the issue.

he simply doesn't want to f up his box...

for the mysql issue.. it appears that selinux is blocking the app/port...

go ahead and type the cmds that have the "#" in front of them...

let us know how it goes..

parallel bash scripts

2012-03-27 Thread bruce
hi.

got a couple of test bash scripts.

dog.sh, cat.sh
each script runs the underlying php in an endless loop.

I'm trying to figure out how to run the scripts in parallel, from the
same parent shell script. something like:

test.sh

  dog.sh > &2
  cat.sh > &2

where dog.sh would be :

while true
do
  pgrep dog
  if [ $? -ne 0 ]
  then
/dog.php
  fi
sleep 5
done

my current tests, run dog.sh, which runs the dog.php ... but the test
never gets to run cat.sh

thoughts/comments...

thanks

Re: parallel bash scripts

2012-03-27 Thread bruce
HI Mateusz

Yeah, tried the basic "&" ... but the issue is the shell scripts run
as infinite loops.. and therefore, the dog.sh doesn't really
exit/complete.

So I can't really run them sequentially.

If I open up separate term/windows, then of course, I can manually run
them (one in each window)..

thanks

dave..

thanks.

but the script is a long running script, and i want to see the output
as the script is running without having to hit the keyboard..

so doing a tail of the file while the process is running isn't what
i'm looking for.

anything else?

thanks

Re: php serial communication in linux

2012-04-30 Thread bruce
hey...

it appears you're running some sort of php script to access the serial
port, for some kind of communication test.

it also appears that you want to run the test from the browser.

here's my suggestion. forget the browser for time being.

get the test running from the cmdline.
ensure the app has the correct privs, as well as the correct user
(i have no idea what that should be)
ensure that selinux isn't interfering
once this works as you expect it to, then you can modify whatever you need to,
then you can get it running from the browser.

Dale,

if your statement was directed to my posting... get a better grip..

i was using the well honed process of SARCASM!!!

every so often, on god knows how many forum/threads.. the issue of
"correct" posting jumps up... those of us who've been using email
since the early 80s no longer really care about the "correct" way..

it seems to bite some email police in the butts though!

wifi access from laptop to starbucks wifi

2010-06-19 Thread bruce
hey.

looking at using the wifi at starbucks, given that it's going to be
free in july!

i'm looking for detailed steps from anyone who's actually used a
public starbucks wifi access.

my system is fedora, running network-setup. i don't have/use/want
networkmanager!

so i'm looking for the actual steps to use using the cmd line functions.

i've seen different sites, that have different processes, so i fugured
i'd turn to here.

thanks much!

hey guys

if you're using starbucks, or nay other public access, aren't you
pretty much constrained to having to deal with an open network. or are
you implying that you can implement an encrypted connection on the nic
setup?

thanks

Re: wifi access from laptop to starbucks wifi

2010-06-22 Thread bruce
right

just wanted to make sure this was/is clarified in case others see this
in the future...

or.. you can always ssh into a secure system, and go from there..

but at the same time.. even if you are on an open network.. accesing
secure "https" sites on your browser on your machine will be safe (at
least as safe as normal)...

one just has to be really aware of the fact that your unencrypted data
is really in the open!

thanks

hacked - looking for doc/suggestions on hardening/securing systems from the start

2013-12-18 Thread bruce
Hey guys. - subject says it all!!

For a basic centos/fedora install. Need to have
pointers/docs/suggestions/solid steps to actually harden/secure a
system.

I've looked at a bunch of different articles/sites, so I'm also turning here.

Also, are there any good (i know) security lists/resources (people) I
could talk to about remotely hiring for this process..

thanks

old FC haceked system

2013-12-18 Thread bruce
Hi.

Got an old FC system that was hacked. - I know - my own fault
(perhaps) should have updated, etc,,,

The system is vital, need to extract all/as much of the files from the
700G drive as possible. I'm going to blow away the corrupt system,
replacing the system with centos 6.5.

On the corrupted machine, when it was setup, the partitions where such
that most of the data was written to the /apps partition - so
hopefully most of what I really need will be there. However, I'm
pretty sure that a chunk of other useful/critical stuff was placed on
other dirs within the drive.

I'd like comments/suggestions on my approach to resolve the issue:

-Setup new machine with a couple of drive bays
-take the corrupted drive, insert it in new machine's drive bay
-insert clean 750G drive in the other drive bay
-from the new machine, do a complete "find" on the corrupted
drive to get a "complete" list of files/dirs/tree
-go down the list, identifying the initial dirs/files that are
important/data, that aren't part of the OS
--copy these dirs/files to a tmp area on the clean drive, maintaining
 the dir structure
-repeat this process untill I pretty much get the data files
(txt/py/pl/php/etc..)
--go through a complete process, trying to identify all the apps/functions
that were added to the corrupt system.
-identify these apps, as well as the rpms required to generate the functions
-create a script to auto install these apps/functions from the associated
  centos/associated centos repos
-handle all mysql stuff by doing a mysqldump from the good machine,
reading the mysql data from the corrupted drive, and then copying
reinserting the mysql data into the new mysql on the clean/tmp machine
-identify any dev languages/environments (py/gearman/perl/php/etc..)
and the required rpms to install or run to recreate the env on the
 clean/tmp machine

-identify all of the "services" running on the corrupt system/drive,
 and clean/install the rpms/services on the clean/tmp machine/drive
-change all ssh keys for the new clean/tmp drive/machine..
-change all passwds on the new machine
-for any web sites, change all passwds

-the goal is to recreate the file system/dirs/files from the corrupt
machine/drive on the new clean/tmp machine as much as possible

-however, once I've gone through all of the above, I still need to
know how to lock down services, how to harden the overall system..

so, the more comments that are on point the better.

thanks

Re: old FC haceked system

2013-12-18 Thread bruce
Hi Mark,

Thanks for the reply. 'ppreciate it.

Basically, I'll be able to keep the corrupted system up/running,
offline for a bit, so I'll be able to (more or less) really be able to
see/recall what apps/functions are running, or should be running.

And I'll be keeping a copy of the drive in a drawer just in case I get
that "oh Christ moment months from now!!)

A critical part of this whole process however, is that we're going to
be creating a system of connected boxes/VMs that need to be tightly
secured. IE, the systems will form a distributed network of boxes,
each connecting back to the mother/master system via either a
webservice process, or via ssh, so I'm going to be looking for a good
approach to really securing the overall architecture.

You up for a more indepth conversation on this??!

Thanks

ps. are you in the us/canada?

Re: hacked - looking for doc/suggestions on hardening/securing systems from the start

2013-12-19 Thread bruce
guys..

The project that the corrupt system is going to be driving will create
a distributed network of systems, where the edge systems, are tied
back into the central server(s). Think of the BOINC/SETI project,
where you have a bunch of edge systems doing "work" and communicating
back to the master system/process.

The project was looking to use secure SSH in a manner, where there are
public/private keys for the master/child servers(services) can
comunicate with each other over the specified encrypted ports/tunnels.
However, it occurs to me that if one of the master/child servers is
hacked, then the person doing the hacking could get into the connected
server via the SSH key/process.

Comments/thoughts on options that can be considered viable/secure for
the process of remotely accessing machines, that would allow for
auto/programatic connection/xfer of data?

thanks

reading/copying a drive??

2013-12-19 Thread bruce
HI.

Took a drive from an older FC13 system, put it in a usb drive bay to
read from a centos 6.5 system

centos sees the drive, but only reports the drive as 350 M free, of a
640G drive..

centos doesn't show all the folders/files on the drive. I'm only
seeing the vm/image files...

any pointers to be able to see the rest of the drive??

All I do is click on the "computer" desktop icon and it apparently
mounts the drive as required.

thanks

Re: reading/copying a drive??

2013-12-20 Thread bruce
Hi.

The drive in question has multiple partitions, but I was only trying
to access the drive as a "raw/data" drive if that was/is possible.

the sys monitor app lists the file systems for the drive as being:
/dev/mapper/vg_dell45-lv_root /
/dev/mapper/vg_dell45-lv_apps /apps
/dev/mapper/vg_dell45-lv_backup /backup
/dev/mapper/vg_dell45-lv_boot /boot
/dev/mapper/vg_dell45-lv_home/home

so i assume in order to "see" the drive in the usb bay on the new
system, i'd mount the drive/partitions using the dir or devicename
which would then get the actual partition/drive contents.

is this close?

trying to mount usb/hard drive

2013-12-20 Thread bruce
Hi,

The drive from the 1st system is a 640G drive

The partition data from the system monitor app gives the following:

/dev/mapper/vg_dell45_lv_root/
/dev/mapper/vg_dell45_lv_apps/apps
/dev/mapper/vg_dell45_lv_backup/backup
/dev/sda1/boot
/dev/mapper/vg_dell45_lv_home/home

When I pop the drive into a usb drive bay to examine/view the drive
from the 2nd system, I only get the 340M slice of the drive.

when I do a "fdisk -l" on the drives in the 2nd system, it sees the "drive",

Disk /dev/sdc: 640.1 GB, 640135028736 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 77825 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x2800

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdc1 * 1 64 512000 83 Linux
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sdc2 64 77826 624618496 8e Linux LVM

So the question is what do I have to "enter/type" at the cmdline to
actually mount the given partition "/apps, /home" of the 640G drive to
be able to access the underlying data??

securing remote/distributed boxes

2013-12-20 Thread bruce
Hi.

Continuing a thread I've been posting on...

I've got a project where there will be a number of client boxes across
the net. The boxes will run a base fedora/centos, and be used as
"compute" nodes if you will.

The boxes will need to connect back to the master server(s) to
exchange information.

The masterservice sends information out using a queing process
(gearman/etc) and the child/client box gets the data, processes it,
returns the data.

So, from the child/clientside, the client box needs to be able to have
remote access to the master queue, via the tunnelling/port process.
This (at least to me) means I've got to have ssh running/ports open,
along with the ability to have pub/private keys so i can
programatically access/shove data across the ssh tunnels.

The boxes need to be locked down/secure as possible.

Other than ssh/internet access, and a few local apps/processes, most
of the other services can be shut down in order to make the box as
secure as possible.

The boxes will not have "users" accessing the box.

Think of the box, as a node on a BOINC/SETI kind of system, where a
bunch of edgenode boxes are used to do computational processing.

Thoughts/comments are welcome.

rkhunter - output

Hi.

Ran rkhunter on a system a few days ago, and got no warnings on the

Just ran rkhunter again on the same box, and I get a bunch of warnings

rootkits.

In looking over sites/information on rkhunter, i'm not sure what this means!

Security/Hacked System - Now what?!!

2013-12-21 Thread bruce
For sake of discussion, assume a fresh base desktop install of the OS
(Fed/RHEL/Centos).

After doing the install from the iso(s), you install :
-rkhunter
-chkconfig

You then go through the services, and disable any services you don't need/want.
You then mod SSH as required to disable root login

OK, what else should you do?

Regarding rkhunter, is it simply a process to allow you to detect if
anything "file" has been changed, so you can then go back to the
previous backup?

Are there any linux apps/services (ala what's on Windows) to
"detect/prevent" rootkits/being hacked?

I've looked over a bunch of webdics/articles, and thought it might be
useful to have a thread on this here, as I'm currently going through
this process.

Thoughts/Comments Welcome

Re: Security/Hacked System - Now what?!!

2013-12-21 Thread bruce
Hi Wolfgang,

Ok, say you have a box that you want to remotely access. Never a need
to access the box via the gui/login.

And regarding the ssh/remote access, you specify public/private keys,
and you have the key process run from the key file. This allows a user
to be able to ssh into the box without having to use the ssh passwd,
but only from the corresponding box that has the associated public
(master/client) passwd/key setup to permit the login access.

But in this situation, if a user hacks into the 1st system, then they
have access to the 2nd system, assuming they know the 2nd system's
username. This would happen as the private/public key access file has
been setup!

Any way around this, or am I missing something...

I'm thinking that you could setup the user(s) on the client machine,
to restrict access/perms, but it still doesn't do anything about the
fact that once a user hacks into the parent machine, they then would
have access into the 2nd machine...

feedback welcome..

Re: Security/Hacked System - Now what?!!

2013-12-22 Thread bruce
Wolfgang,

Right in what you wrote. And what you wrote allows for ssh commands to
be used where you specify the keyFile.

However you can also mod the ssh_config (i believe) to have it auto
use the keyFile with the pub/private key to negotiate the user/passwd
process for the ssh cmd. This is useful when remotely/programatically
accessing the ssh cmdline process for running remote apps, xferring
files, etc.

But, and in my case, once all of this is setup, and working. If hacker
guy gets in Sys1, (where Sys1/Sys2 have been setup to do pub/private
key, and the underlying Sys1/Sys2 keyfiles have been created) then
hacker guy can easily get into/access Sys2, provided they "know" the
username.

And this is where I'm trying to determine if there's any kind of
approach/process to allow for the programmatic use via ssh, but at the
same time be secure if the initial system is hacked.

Thanks

-bruce

dual boot

2013-12-22 Thread bruce
hi guys.

question regarding how to remotely auto boot/install into a system..

normal operation:
-1 drive/1 OS
machine gets turned on, boots/starts the OS

but if I want to do a remote/auto/programtic install of a new OS, on
top of the current OS, how the heck can this be accomplished.

I was initially thinking that some form of dual boot is required.. I'm
now wondering if it's possible to have a kind of "self" reinstall
process.

pointers/comments welcome.

file deletion from usb drive??

2013-12-23 Thread bruce
Hi,

Created external 500G usb hard drive,
Added ~300G of dirs/files to it

I can see the files from the mounted drive, via the "Computer" icon of
the desktop.

Here's the tricky issue!

I drill down in the drive/dir icon to get the target dir, which has
1000s of files in it. I select a few using the mouse, select the "move
to trash" menu item, and after it says it's moving files to the trash,
I do a refresh/reload, and the files are still there!!

So, just how do I delete files from the external drive!

Thanks

I tried adding the delete option to Nautilus, as well as running the
rm command from the cmdline

find . -name "*Booklist.html*" | xargs rm -f

I've tried all of this as root with no results.

Re: file deletion from usb drive??

2013-12-23 Thread bruce
John,

I can create new dirs on it, I assume I can create files as well. I'm
assuming it should be read/write/delete...

I've been looking to see exactly how centos/fedora assigns privs/perms
when doing auto mount for external/usb hard drives.

In the nutilus gui for the computer/drive, there is a item for
properties that has permissions.. I did set all of the sections that I
saw to read/write/delete in the event this was a perm issue.

Re: Linux hardening with Lynis

2013-12-24 Thread bruce
Hey.

Looked over your link/app. how is this any different from
rkhunter/chkrootkit or any of the other apps that inspect files for
changes to indicate a potential root/virus issue?

Does anyone know of an app/process that can prevent a rootkit/virus
from modifying files, as opposed to simply detecting when/if a file
has been modified?

Thanks

hacked/recovery steps

2013-12-25 Thread bruce
Reason:
-Discovered linux/old fedora system was hacked.
-Quick run of rkhunter/chkrootkit revealed hacks,
plus the root passwd changed, as well as other issues.

Resolution/Steps to recover:
-remove the machine
-given machine was laptop, with 2.5" drive,
make a couple of copies of the complete drive on
separate drives, using "slow" usb connection to
usb drive bays - jesus, this is slow!!
-I copied the complete drive, ~400G worth of files
I wanted to have a complete copy of the data files,
as well as all of the OS stuff as well...
-the backup/copy will never be used to run a box, as it's
  corrupted

The corrupted laptop drive was initially setup to have
 separate partitions
 -root, apps, home, backup
-apps contains the "majority" of the actual data..

-Analyse the initial/corrupted machine/system to determine
what apps are required from the desktop/panels
-Determine what additional apps are required based on the
 rpm analysis
-Determine the required files/dirs from the data partition "apps'
-Determine the additional required files for the dev environment
  php/python/javascript

For the OS/system/apps - inspect/analyse centos to ensure the
 required yum/rpm/repositories exist
-create script/bash to completely rebuild system (except the data)

test out all of this

TBD:
-create/test a base rsync/backup strategy
-implement rkhunter/chkrootkit for the new restored/reinstalled
  system
-create a faster approach to doing the complete copy/backup
--using/copying from usb to usb drive is too slow,
perhaps an external drive bay that allows the internal
2.5 to be plugged into it, to copy to an attached backup drive
or to copy via ethernet to an attached drive

Script to install/reinstall OS

2013-12-25 Thread bruce
Hi.

Anyone have pointers to a script that I can use/modify to allow me to
restore/replicate an install once I have a system working.

I'm looking into chef/puppet/etc.. but wondered if others might have
thoughts on this.

Actually, something that would not only install the OS, but also copy
files from a backup system for required data would be great.

Auto OS Install Process

2013-12-26 Thread bruce
Hi,

In order to do an OS install, you need to have an external media to
start the install process. This media provides a "base"/small system
that you can then use to do a larger netinstall, or a larger update
process to get the drive/system setup the way you want. All of the
larger system install data/packages/etc can come from the http/net
install process.

In most (all) cases I've seen, the process is then to take/remove the
CD from the system, followed by a restart, where the system OS on the
drive then gets invoked.

So this process requires some manual interaction.

Here's my question:

Is there a way to do the same basic process, except to always leave
the CD in, and to then be able to "switch" the system, so it "knows"
which media to install from.

If this can be done, one can setup a system with a basic cd that will,
when run, create/start the basic OS install, but then not be used any
other time... This could allow for an auto/programatic approach to be
able to do a remote/auto OS install.

Is there any other way that this might be accomplished?

Thoughts/Comments?

Re: Auto OS Install Process

2013-12-26 Thread bruce
Hey Suvayu,

Thanks, but in looking at kickstarter, it doesn't allow as to how
you'd be able to set the system to boot into one or the other OS
partitions.

What I'd really like is the ability to set two partitions

PartitionA - base/minimal OS
-used to just do a netinstall to setup partitionB with the real OS, and
the actual system that's going to contain the VM
-when this partition is invoked, it automatically does a netinstall to
  set up partitionB
-after doing the netinstall, the process then resets whatever is needed
  to then boot into partitionB

PartitionB - complete/full OS, along with all the rest of the system/env files
-created by the netinstall process from Partition A, the minimal install/OS
-has the ability to also do a "netinstall" to reinstall the OS for the
   partition A OS
-has the ability to set the system, so the next reboot, it goes into
Partition A

This kind of approach would allow me to have full/complete control, to
be able to do remote installs of the OS on the different partitions,
as well as control which partition gets booted on reboot.

And of course, a given OS could be updated using the normal yum processes.

does this make sense.

Thoughts/Comments ??

Thanks

Re: Auto OS Install Process

2013-12-26 Thread bruce
Hey Suvayu,

Not to be insensitive.. but I've had left-post/right-post/top-post
args etc for damn near 30 years...

My motto - if I create the post, I'll post/add to it as i see fit.
Everyon else is welcome to reply, or not!!

Now that that's out of the way...

My need is in the case a system gets hacked/corrupted. If the system
is remote, I want a method of being able to get into the hacked
system, and to have it then restore the running/corrupted partition
from the "clean" partition.

This means I need to be able to install dual OS, as well as have a
method of being able to switch the boot process as required.

No, this isn't foolproof to eleminate hacking, but it does allow me to
then be able to more easlity/quickly recover in the event the process
detects the master partition as being hacked.

So, in my mind, I'll have dual OS/partitions
paritionA
  -minimal OS
-used to do a netinstall/reinstall of a clean OS into partitionB
-so when the system boots up into this partition, it will auto
perform the netinstall process into the partitionB for the
   reinstall

partitionB
  -the master partition/OS
-contains the working/real OS/env of the system
-also able to invoke a netinstall process to reinstall partitionA as
   required
-has the ability to toggle between the partitions
-has the ability to set itself as the default OS/partition

So in my mind, this really should be a matter of doing a dual
install/boot process, and then determining how one can
programatically/automatically set whatever function/switch has to be
set to switch between the partitions/OS on reboot of the system.

Keep in mind, once the system is created/provisioned, all of this is
being handled remotely, via ssh.

thanks

Re: Auto OS Install Process

2013-12-26 Thread bruce
Hi Pete.

Thanks for the reply. If I understand your following statement::
> If we assume that you have functioning ssh access to the machine, you can

> grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/path/to/grub.cfg)

this implies that for each installed OS, there will be a separate
"/boot" in the OS tree, but if I'm in partitionA, how do I set the dir
for the boot path for the partitionB, which wouldn't be mounted at
that time... Or would it be?

I've been looking for a sample/turotial that lays this out that I can
examine, and haven't found one yet.

Thanks Much!!!
