Remember, anyone could offer a different spin that does an installation
with different defaults.

I'm guessing you must be using the Gnome classic layout if you have a
utilities group somewhere. But in that case, it's still easily
available. I do have the terminal in my favourites, but I almost never
click it because it's easier to hit the logo button and type
"terthat hidden anyway? It is a utility and if you really want it as a
favourite, it's easy to put it there.

I'm pretty sure near 100% of users add Terminal to the favorites
immediately after install.

Unlikely. There are a lot of non-technical users of Fedora. At a
school I support, I have done well over a hundred Fedora installs for
teachers and students and only 1 teacher and a few students would have
any idea what to do with the terminal. I've also installed it for
family and friends and maybe 1 of those would be able to make any use of
the terminal.

Surely the #1 use case of Fedora on the desktop IS the terminal?

I don't read email in the terminal, I don't access web sites in the
terminal, I don't IRC in the terminal, etc. But I do have over 20
terminal tabs open.

Answer: The mythical beast of the newbie converting from Windows or OS
X. They aren't coming in droves, especially not to Fedora.

No love for the actual user base - skilled/technical users doing
development or administration tasks.

I will stop now and go back to wrangling F25.

I haven't been following the thread, and I haven't used Fedora in a
while, but I (like many others) was once a Linux newbie, and one of the
first Linux
distros I used was RedHat, so I've been there. That was about 13 years
ago or thereabouts. I'm a retired RF engineer, not a computer whiz, altho
I did do some simple coding in BASIC and Pascal a long time ago. But I
am certainly not doing development or admin on Linux--I'm just using the
OS for general computing purposes--word processing, news downloads,
Google maps, numerical conversions (Convertall), general information
(Google),
photo download and manipulation, DXMap, and the occasional relatively
simple drafting operation (DraftSight). I have _almost_ forsaken
Windows; I only
use it for audio recording and OCR, since in my opinion Linux isn't
there yet.

Perhaps Fedora and other Nuxes are trying hard to be Windows ?:) :)
Now that MS is a member of OSF, and on the board, perhaps Windows
and Linux will merge into a single OS - like ... WinLin, or
LinWin, Winux ?
Argh!!! No mater how you name it, it sounds terrible!

I presume that you're using Gnome. Remember, Fedora != Gnome, just as
Linux != Ubuntu. In Xfce, not only does it have a launcher on my panel,
it's available from the main menu two different ways. And, I can also
get to that menu just by right-clicking on my desktop. My understanding
is that it's hard to reach in Gnome because the Gnome devs don't think
that the average user needs to use it on a day-to-day basis, and they're
right. As an example, my sister uses Xubuntu, and the only time she
needs a terminal is for troubleshooting, maybe two or three times a year.
