Re: Fedora 35 using XFS as default for Network iso / XFCE?

That's why you can get XFS by default if you use the Server net install, but choose the Workstation package set. Or Btrfs if you use Everything netinstall, but choose the Server package set. I think that's the slightly confusing part is that it ends up being an attribute of the install media. The other oddity is that Everything isn't really "owned" by any one working group or SIG, it's sort of a catch all media, and due to some esoteric aspects of how images are created it was just a lot easier to let the Everything netintsaller default to Btrfs. And also it's the only way to do netinstalls for any of the desktop spins, they don't each have their own. Workstation once had a netinstaller, but it was dropped maybe 1/2 dozen releases or so ago. -- Chris Murphy ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam on the list, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure

Sorry to not be clear. I was just pointing out that depending on the > install media you use you'll get different > disk layouts. I wonder why the inconsistency is permitted. Each edition (working group) and spin (special interest group) can choose their own default layout and filesystem. For the btrfs by default change, all the desktop spins were consulted in advance with a preview of the proposal, to address any concerns they had and how to opt-out of the change if they wished. All the desktops went with btrfs. Server, Cloud, IoT editions were given a heads up, but at the time of the original proposal for Fedora 33 it wasn't expected any would join right away anyway. Fedora 35 Cloud edition switched to Btrfs by default for its images. -- Chris Murphy ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam on the list, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure

Sorry to not be clear. I was just pointing out that depending on the install media you use you'll get different disk layouts. I wonder why the inconsistency is permitted. One of the reasons we have so many different filesystems is because some are better suited to particular use cases. A developer workstation places different demands on a filesystem compared to servers doing transaction processing where you can't afford to lose and data versus large numerical models where thruput is important but "lost" data are easily replaced by restarting the model from the last checkpoint, or remote sensing and other real-time data collection where irrecoverable data are lost during downtime. The diversity of widely used and well tested filesystems is one of the advantages of linux compared to Windows and macOS. In my life, there was the often painful pre-XFS period where users queued up asking "when will the system be back up" and the XFS era when the couldn't walk to my office in the time it took their SGI workstations to reboot. Today, the majority of users can get along fine using ext4, btrfs, or XFS. I see groups that using a filesystem well suited to their "mission" requirements, and will use the same filesystem on servers and workstations because it is helpful to have several people who can step in when there is a filesystem issue. That's all well and good. But, one may expect that the "server" group would have decided that either XFS or btrfs was best suited for their "mission" and would have ensured that only one media would install their "spin" to best suit their "mission" But, never mind, I'll just consider it an oddity. -- Did 황준호 die? ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam on the list, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure

Aha! I think you got it. My memory is that there used to be a workstation netinstall and then there was only the server netinstall. Maybe it changed to "Everything" and I did not notice it.
