But when you look at the failed grade school writing ability of a great number of people on the internet, I seriously begin to doubt whether they could recognise the difference between a well written letter and a bad one. Chatting to some people, face to face, about these sorts of scams, and saying the same sort of thing to them that you have, explaining what I would have thought was utterly obvious from just a cursory glance at the scam, I've come to the conclusion that the world is full of incredibly stupid people. None of them had anything more than the slightest of suspicions that the scam was a scam. And, on the other hand, I've had similar misgivings about lack of caution when speaking to my bank and our alarm security service. They do scant verification of identity, and expect me to do the same with them. Of all people, they should be the most cautious, and aware of why. Lots of good advice already, so I won't waste bandwidth repeating it all, but I will add an item to Joanne's comment about things a reputable company wouldn't do: On Thu, 2010-05-06 at 19:25 -0700, jdow wrote: > But, the primary > good thing to learn is that the likelihood of ANY reputable company > asking for information this way is so close to zero it's safe to discard > the message. The likelihood of any reputable company (at least one from an English speaking country, and Google is a U.S. company) sending out anything with such atrocious spelling/grammar/capitalization/punctuation/sentence structure/formatting is also extremely low. If it reads like it was written by someone from Nigeria - it probably was! This one is actually quite a bit better than most, but it's still quite obvious. Any communications from Google would be a lot more professional than what you received - they would never have let *that* get out the door! Google does not show the originating IP in clear text - I cannot say if it is encoded in some way in the message-id like some webmail clients do. Re: OT gmail alert -- spam or real?
Others, Seems to me that some people DO need an effective AV/Phish solution. The malware infects their brains, especially if they had to ask the question Jackson Byers asked. Jackson, Simply look at the headers of the message. Look at what it is asking you. The "security upgrade" scheme is old in Internet years. These days it's more a joke than anything else. Learn to read the "received-from: " headers on the email. It would also help to learn the meaning of the rest of the headers. But, the primary good thing to learn is that the likelihood of ANY reputable company asking for information this way is so close to zero it's safe to discard the message. The usual technique for this kind of change is similar to what Yahoo did when they found good reason to update their database. When I went to log in it asked for new security information with revised reminder questions. Email would be too cumbersome, too likely to be spam canned, and too easy to forge and sucker in gullible people. Just toss it Jackson. Then see if you can avail yourself of some of the expertise here off-line for help learning to read email headers at a cursory level and why. Approached nicely folks here do answer. {^_^} - Original Message - From: "jackson byers" Sent: Thursday, 2010/May/06 10:49 >I don't know how to tell whether the below quoted email is really from > gmail or some sort of spam/scan. I don't know anything about "dkim" --I did not respond to that message --I have since reported it as spam --I previously had not known how to check headers following gmail instructions: Log in to Gmail. Open the message you'd like to view headers for. Click the down arrow next to Reply, at the top-right of the message pane. Select Show original. The full headers will appear in a new window.
