Leander, that seems to be just the ticket!

Looks like that's solved the issue at first sniff, but I'll have more time
to poke around tomorrow and make sure it's all happy.

Thanks again, and I'll post back when I've had more time to run it through
its paces.

I ran into the same blank screen bug a while back on KDE spin of Fedora
with a Precision 7720 (Quadro P3000/Intel Graphics). I finally figured
out that adding the following options to /etc/sddm/Xsetup file and
leaving graphics switching on in the BIOS allowed SDDM to start normally
with the nVidia drivers:

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

I haven't seen that suggested yet in the thread, if it has and I've
overlooked it my apologizes.

What appears below is *NOT* an X config file!   It is the settings for the
"nvidia-settings" Utility!

You went to the last line on the left hand side of the Utility which reads
"nvidia-settings Configuration" and not the second line on the Utility which
reads
"X Server Display Configuration"!!

That is because it isn't what I've asked of you.  And, I thought my
instructions and
examples were clear, but you are *creating* a 98-monitor.conf.

2018-08-20 Thread Thomas Letherby
Invidia-xconfig created the config in /etc/X11/xorg.conf though, however
when I went to grab that it appears startx and sddm are now failing to load
at all.

Not sure if that's something I've done, or the latest patches so I'll
reinstall and to get us back to a known config, and then install the
drivers again.

Hopefully I can get that done tomorrow and get back to testing.

Re: Dell XPS15 9570

2018-08-20 Thread Thomas Letherby
Tim - I don't believe so, it's a 4K screen so there shouldn't be much it
can't display, and previewing the theme seems to work ok.

Tried installing Haveged suggested in the Ubuntu bug report, but no dice.
That seems to be mostly people using Gnome, but it's interesting they're
seeing the same issue.

My X config as created by the nVidia settings:

#
# /home/testuser/nvidia-settings-rc
#
# Configuration file for nvidia-settings - the NVIDIA X Server Settings
utility
# Generated on Mon Aug 20 21:29:02 2018
#

# ConfigProperties:

RcFileLocale = C
DisplayStatusBar = Yes
SliderTextEntries = Yes
IncludeDisplayNameInConfigFile = Yes
ShowQuitDialog = Yes
UpdateRulesOnProfileNameChange = Yes
Timer = Memory_Used_(GPU_0),Yes,3000
Timer = Thermal_Monitor_(GPU_0),Yes,1000
Timer = PowerMizer_Monitor_(GPU_0),Yes,1000

# Attributes:

testlaptop.test.domail:1.0/LogAniso=0
testlaptop.test.domail:1.0/FSAA=0
testlaptop.test.domail:1.0/TextureClamping=1
testlaptop.test.domail:1.0/FXAA=0
testlaptop.test.domail:1.0/FSAAAppControlled=1
testlaptop.test.domail:1.0/LogAnisoAppControlled=1
testlaptop.test.domail:1.0/OpenGLImageSettings=1
testlaptop.test.domail:1.0/FSAAAppEnhanced=0

Doesn't seem to have a monitor section, but this may be because it's a
laptop so the nVidia and Intel gfx are interconnected, I also don't have a
98-monitor.conf file.

Might have something to do with it...

Restarting SDDM on another terminal just gets me the usual black screen.

Installed the latest patches too just in case, no dice there either.

You might want to take a look at this bug in Ubuntu 18.04 which appears
to have been caused by a complex interaction between the display manager
and certain kernel changes and possible some problems with getrandom.
IN the beginning people though it was just a kernel bug, but people
later found that installing a different display manager, installing a
daemon to improve the generation of random input and several other
workarounds all affected the problem.

Sorry for the multiple replies to the previous post.  But I was thinking about
this
issue this evening and I've got another thing you may want to try.

After bringing up KDE go to a konsole window and run nvidia-settings.  One menu
item
is "X Server Display Configuration".   Use "Save to X Configuration File" to
save the
configuration to a file in your home directory.

Edit that file so it only contains the Monitor, Device, and Screen sections.
Then
copy that file, as root, to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/98-monitor.conf and reboot.

FWIW, mine on my old acer looks like this

# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings
# nvidia-settings:  version 340.107  (buildmeister@swio-display-x64-rhel04-13)

One other small test.

When you boot and get the blank screen.  If you do "Ctrl-Alt-F2" and then login
in
text mode if you do "sudo systemctl restart sddm" will you have the login
display
when you switch back?

OK

So, yes, a strange sddm issue.  I get the feeling it may be trying to use an
output
which isn't really connected.

What is the output of "xrandr" after you've successfully logged in?

Typing my password in logs in fine, so it's definitely something stopping
sddm from displaying the screen, rather than a total failure.

I do have those options set at boot, I posted before and after I installed
the nVidia drivers, so i probably caused some confusion there.

I did also try adding a 30 second timer as per
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1350107 but no dice there
either.

I don't see anything wrong with the above.  All looks like what my systems look
like.

That being said, I just looked back on your previous logs and noticed that your
kernel boot line seems significantly different than mine.

In your Xorg.log you have

[    22.816] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.17.12-200.fc28.x86_64
root=/dev/mapper/fedora-root ro resume=/dev/mapper/fedora-swap
rd.lvm.lv=fedora/root
rd.luks.uuid=luks-0f4479d6-17df-4fb0-a29f-02feb8367c61 rd.lvm.lv=fedora/swap
nomodeset=1 rhgb quiet LANG=en_US.UTF-8

While I have

[ 8.437] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.17.14-202.fc28.x86_64
root=UUID=4455f2e9-fed2-4e1e-856d-642b531547f9 ro rhgb quiet LANG=en_US.UTF-8
rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau modprobe.blacklist=nouveau nvidia-drm.modeset=1

I wonder if you make changes at boot time to add those extra bits if it would
make
any difference?

Also, while you do have a blank screen it seems sddm thinks all is fine.
Wonder what
would happen if you typed in your password.

I'm not sure what stage you're up to by then: Just getting the logon
screen, or have logged in?

If it's the login screen, it could be that they've designed it so that
it can make use of audio (e.g. spoken prompts for the blind), and the
sound system is started whether, or not, it's actually going to be
used. And I've seen logon screens which play a little tune as they pop
up (on other distros, where the sound actually was working at that
stage).

OK.  But you could do that from the VT from the command line without doing a
"startx"?

Also, if you do a "startx" and then bring up the "systemsettings" GUI and go to
"displays and monitor" does everything look correct?

I'll do both as soon as I can find my USB to Ethernet adapter as the laptop
doesn't have an Ethernet port built in. It's on my desk, but right now so
is everything else!

Should be able to dig it out tomorrow and get these done.

Thanks for your help so far.

I prefer to use "journalctl" to extract log information.

Have a look at https://paste.fedoraproject.org/paste/7iRJ5adKn4W6SSCyAKs~OQ.

These outputs were generated just after the system was booted with a user that
logged
in via ssh.   So, no attempt was made to start a GUI.

I think you should do the same and see if there is any thing that pops out.

I normally see a few ACPI message pop up on boot as well.  I've never known
them to
be a source of problems

And is exactly what you'd see on a system which has been rebooted and working
normally before a login.   I would do the following as a "test"

I would install another DM.  Just as "kdm", "lightdm", or "gdm".   Then I would
do

systemctl -f enable (whatever DM you've picked)

And then reboot.

I installed the drivers using the below. Problem is the same, black screen
on boot, but you can shift to another terminal and startx. The nVidia
control panel shows the driver loaded and reports OK.

I used the following:

dnf update
dnf install fedora-workstation-repositories
config-manager --set-enabled rpmfusion-nonfree-nvidia-driver
dnf install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia akmod-nvidia
dnf update
reboot.

Here's the full output of the commands used, and I pulled the logs again:

https://pastebin.com/RfpfRqSj

I've not had a chance to dredge through them myself yet, I should be able
to tonight or tomorow I hope. In the mean time is there any other
logs/diagnostics I should check that might help?

Thanks,

Thomas

Re: Dell XPS15 9570

2018-08-13 Thread Thomas Letherby
Sorry, I wasn't entirely clear there, I meant the major components (GFX,
CPU family etc) rather than down to any particular board rev, although It's
not really been out that long, so there's probably not been any revs yet.

My kids decided they'd bother my wife at the grocery store, so I dd get a
chance to re-install and pull some logs before I try installing the
graphics drivers again

So to start this again, in the proper manner:

Dell XPS 15 9570
i7 8th Gen
GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB
1TB SSD
32GB RAM
4K touchscreen

BIOS changes from default:
Secureboot off
Drive Controller ACPI (From RAID)
Powershare on (For charging USB devices)
Turn off WiFi when Wired LAN connected

Booted from USB the latest download of the KDE spin

Added dis_ucode_ldr and nomodeset=1 to grub otherwise it won't successfully
boot.

Installed to blank SSD, custom partitioning with encryption.
Allocated a bit more space to / from /home.

Installed.

Laptop boots successfully and appears stable.

nomodeset=1 has seemingly persisted from the install.

I ran dnf update to make sure everything was up to date.

I pulled dmesg, lspci messages, and the X logs and dumped them all to
pastebin here:

https://pastebin.com/srDCLx8N

My next step will be to add the Fedora workstation repo and attempt to
install the nVidia drivers from there, following the guide here:

https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA

Before I do is there any other diagnostics, tests logs etc I should pull
before I beginning for before/after comparison?

Thanks all.

Thomas

Are you sure? Manufacturers change components inside laptops, even
within the same model. I wouldn't even be surprised if you get
component changes within the run of a model build.

2018-08-11 Thread Thomas Letherby
I'll try and get a few hours next weekend to put together some proper
diagnostics. Was hoping someone had already tried with the laptop, the
motherboard and graphics sre the same across all the latest XPS 15s, so if
it's been done on one it should be done on them all.

No matter, I'll rebuild it when I can and get some proper logs going.

Well, you're really not giving enough information for anyone to guess if they
may
have encountered the same problem.  Like I said, at the very least you
should post the output of "systemctl status sddm".  Also, you should post the
output
of "lspci" showing what the actual nVidia HW is.

Not sure, but it works fine up until the nVidia drivers are installed. It
does have dual nVidia/Intel graphics, so I'm wondering if it's having
trouble switching them over. No smoking gun though, this is just the errors
I see when it tanks.

When I get some more time I'll have another look, was really just hoping
someone had cracked it already! :)

Digging in a bit it appears to be something going on between SDDM, the
nVidia drivers and ACPI. I don't have the time to go much further right now
so I'll run it with the Nouveau drivers until Dell release the Developer
edition and see how they do it! :)

You say you can switch to another tty and using startx you'll get KDE up and
running,
yes?   If that is the case then the problem is not the nVidia drivers as they
are
being used quite nicely in that instance.  You can verify this by issuing
"lsmod |
grep nvidia" and it would generate an output similar to this in konsole.

[egreshko@meimei Season-4]$ lsmod | grep nvidia
nvidia_drm 45056  7
nvidia_modeset   1093632  22 nvidia_drm
nvidia  14061568  1057 nvidia_modeset
drm_kms_helper    196608  1 nvidia_drm
drm   458752  10 drm_kms_helper,nvidia_drm
ipmi_msghandler    57344  2 ipmi_devintf,nvidia

If all this checks out, it would seem your problem is with the display manager.
 What
do you get for "systemctl status sddm"

FWIW, I'm running F28/KDE with nVidia RPMFusion drivers just fine with GeForce
GTX
660 HW.
