Springlobby: Springlobby is the spring-rts engine front end. It's being used to initiate both single and multi-play games. It can also be used to download maps and modifications. In-order to use it, first select "Server -> Connect" and create a user/password login. Once the login is successful, you will be able to use the "Battlelist" tab to see on-line games and join them. Important note: The springlobby is also used to configure the spring engine (display, 3D quality, sound, etc). Select Edit -> Spring settings to configure the engine. Side note: I've just release a new version of the game lobby (the program that's being used to download maps and mods and connect you to single and multi-player games). This version fixes a number of bugs (including broken map download). Download it from here. https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/springlobby-0.118-1.fc14 https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/springlobby-0.118-1.fc13 Modifications: The spring-rts itself is not a game, it's an empty game engine, in-order to start playing to you need to download games, or modification. There are two ways to download modifications: 1. On-line, using the springlobby. 2. Off-line, using rapid (preferable method). 3. Off-line, using springfiles.com. http://springfiles.com/ In-order to download modification on-line, login, and them switch to the "Battlelist" tab. In the games list, you'll see a list of server, each with the current modification and map being used. If the modification / map doesn't exist in your installation, an "x" will appear to the left of its name. Right click -> Download mod/map will download the modification or map. Due to the constant development state of most spring-rts modifications the easiest way to install mods, is using rapid-springs. Please follow these instruction: http://pypi.python.org/pypi/rapid-spring Once you've download it, you can select which modification you by looking at this page: http://springrts.com/wiki/Games (With my favorite being Supreme Annihilation, which is based around Balance Annihilation) http://springrts.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=17380 In my case, I'm using rapid to install the following mods: $ rapid list-pinned-tags Using data directory: /home/gilboa/.spring Pinned tags: ba:latest (Balanced Annihilation V7.19) ca:test (Complete Annihilation test-8610) sa:latest (Supreme Annihilation U75 V1.0) Maps: There are two ways to download maps: 1. On-line, using the springlobby. 2. Off-line, using springfiles.com. http://springfiles.com/ Starting a game: Once you are done download maps and games, you start playing, either on-line (by select a game in the BattleList tab) or off-line (By selecting the Singleplayer tab, selecting a map from the map list-box, selecting a mod from the mod list-box and adding and placing a number of computer AI opponents using the "Add bot" button). Hope I helps, - Gilboa -- users mailing list users@l

If you are willing to forgo the empire-building aspects, the game "Go" would provide all the strategy and tactics you could want. GnuGo provides a decent OSS computer opponent. I know that KDE games provides a GUI for it with kigo - don't know what Gnome might provide. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines

Two entries that might interest you: 1. Freeciv. Description: You start as a single settler, slowly build your empire, develop technologies and fight (or trade) over land and resources with your neighboring empires. Pros: 1. Freeciv is complex and requires brain power and more-or-less zero instincts. 2. No two games are alike. 3. It has very low computer hardware requirements. Cons: 1. freeciv is geared toward on-line game (less than stellar AI). 2. Its less polished and graphically pleasing then its proprietary parent (Civilization III, IV, V). Yum package: freeciv Site: http://www.freeciv.org/ 2. spring-rts (my personal favorite): Description: You start as a single mechanized commander capable of building limited set of structures, slowly building your base (factories, power generation, defense, etc) and your army (trucks, tanks, air and naval units), fighting till death with up to 8 AI and/or human opponents. Pros: 1. It's graphically pleasing. 2. The AI is fairly good, so you're not forced to play online. 3. The game speed is configurable, making it easy for people that don't belong to 12-year-old-on-suger-diet-with-sub-1ms-reaction-time-club. Cons: 1. It requires a good 3D sub-system. (Never tried playing it using OSS drivers) 2. Initial installation (especially if you want to use different mods) is somewhat challenging. My skills, and slight interest, in games doesn't extend much beyond Tetris and Pacman (haven't seen one to rival Deluxe Pacman on the Amiga, it's fun, funny, quite pretty, and playable). Most of the AI games remind me of disturbing ants. You can influence them to do something, but not actually control them. It's a similar thing with the modern 3D reality, or fantasy, games, it does all sorts of things by itself while you nudge it about. I'm not really into games, I'm not very competitive and most leave me cold so I rarely bother, but I enjoyed investigating this one, where tribes of autonomous little animated entities compete with one another. I don't mind playing them, but my son laughs his backside off watching me try to manipulate all the various keys and key-chords. I'm awful at it. I waste a lot of time, however, with things like Pysol-FC (which simply HAS to be the best collection of solitaire games around), Frozen bubble, and one I bought a while back for ten bucks, Osmos which is slow moving and peaceful with beautiful animated screens to navigate around. there are also some games starring professor Fizwizzle, but right now I can't remember the name(s). they are commercial, but not expensive. -- Fred Smith -- fre...@fcshome.stoneham.ma.us - "For the word of God is living and active. You might take a look at Colossus. I play a lot versus the AI. There is building of sorts during the game, but its different.
