I chose to buy a Kobo, which has an unofficial Debian version of its software,
which is handy for updates of the firmware. I don't know whether it works on
Ubuntu or can be converted using alien, however.

I don't think that you'll have compatibility problems with any ebook
readers; probably all of them look like pen drives (USB mass storage
device, or whatever) to Linux, though you're safer with ones that have
an SD Card slot. But the 6'' devices are, in my experience, pretty
useless for pdfs that can not or should not be "reflown", that is,
those that need to look exactly like they do on paper. I've never seen
an IMF report (I never cared for horror :-)) but if they have tables
in them, you'll probably be frustrated to no end. Google for people's
experiences with pdfs on, say, Kindle.

Definitely the Kindle. As was said before, you can mount it as a
standard USB drive and copy files onto and off of it. In addition, the
PDF support is better (IMO) than other devices. Especially given that
you can alter the orientation of the display so that each page of a tech
manual PDF is split in half and fully readable in landscape mode.

And the battery life is awesome. It's advertised as 30 days, but I've
taken it to over 40 days [1] several times now.

I can say that the Kindle does accept PDF formatted docs. As for the
Cyrillic, I'll have to look into that one.

I think the Barnes & Nobel Nook Color is a 'fantastic' product given
the price/performance/capabilities. Especially the fact that you can
get Cyanogen on it, that opens it up completely into a general purpose
tablet computer. People have also gotten VNC into the underlying Linux
as well as ordinary shell access too.

Much thanks for your quick reply.

I should also mention that I'm interested in eReader file support; I
download many PDF files (academic research articles, IMF reports, etc; and
yes, I'm a linux user/doer).

I also am a native Ukrainian speaker/reader, which means I can read
Cyrillic; consequently, I'm interested in how eReaders handle Cyrillic.

Much thanks again,

Max

Kindle. I attach my kindle to my linux boxes all the time. They auto mount
and you can copy files to and from. Or you can use Calibre to manage your
collections.

And since I am a writer of fiction selling for the Kindle (and the Nook),
I can recommend some thrilling Zombie books to you. ;-)
