Yeah, it's not a panacea for all. But it's a relief for someone like me, who needs acroread not for the js-related functionality. That makes it safer, but it also removes all the extra functionality that would have motivated someone to install Adobe Reader on a Fedora box in the first place. This is what we found even for our Windows users. To get around the 0-day that was out there for more than a month, we had all Adobe users on every platform disable JavaScript. The result was that a lot of documents would no longer display correctly. Adobe and its piss-poor security track record is currently our #1 security headache. For all the reasons already documented in this thread, we are forced to use Adobe Reader, but it is riddled with actively exploited security holes. --Greg -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate/MailingListGuidelines

If only I've had to move back to using the Sun JRE to run a big java application we develop. If I use OpenJDK then the performance is abysmal and we get regular HotSpot crashes. The Sun version runs like a charm. This may not something to do with the way OpenJDK is packaged on Fedora rather than a code code issue, but in any case Sun Java = works, Fedora Open JDK = fails. ..and yes I submitted a bug report* with a reproducible test case, but not a peep from the maintainers. No question about that! But its output is much better than that of the alternatives' I tried, and it let's me view documents fullscreen under arbitrary magnification. Both are very important for me because I read a lot of pdfs on netbooks with small displays. Except for the browser plugin (which OpenJDK does not include and which is provided by the IcedTea project), the code is almost 100% Sun code. Compatibility should be a non-issue. And a lot of things not going for it. Adobe is an irresponsible company. The product used poor encryption. It won't let you print copies if the document has a flag set indicating not to allow that. Documents aren't actually documents but programs that are overly powerful, so that reading untrusted documents is not safe. They are slow to correct security problems with the product. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate/MailingListGuidelines

Based on reports from people who have one or the other, not personal experience.
