If some devices are USB3 there can be RF interference with nearby
connections.
My desktop can't have mouse and keyboard on the rear ports when the
external
(wall wart powered, so power is not an issue) USB drive is connected. I
plan to
try connecting the drive to USB-C PCIe card (when a USB-C cable arrives) to
get
some separation.

It would be useful to have a way to monitor USB power usage by device.
External
powered hubs or docks may be more able to meet power demands of USB-powered
devices than the built-in ports (particularly for laptops).

If any motherboard components have aged badly, it may not be able to
supply power well enough on one of the ports. And it's likely your
camera uses more power than the bluetooth dongle. The camera may not
be fully initialising itself.

A quick look at your log files looks like the failing one is trying to
use it as a sound device (which is sensible if it has a microphone
built in), and failing on that half. That could be a system
recognition problem, or still a power problem (if the camera uses
independent chips for sound and vision, it's easy enough that one part
will fail differently than the other).

If I try plugging two USB webcams into my computer (experimenting with
basic webcams and OBS Studio), everything USB-related on my PC goes
haywire. They do have different chipsets, so it shouldn't be a
software clash.

Hardware does fail. And that can be a major pain when it's built-in.

If it weren't built in, one other guess might be that the computer
doesn't have sufficient power on its USB buses to run the camera.
Though that's still a possibility, even with built-in cameras, they're
often an internal USB device.

The computer shares its USB power availability across a number of USB
ports, often in groups (e.g. one set of sockets shares a 1 amp maximum,
a second pair has their own 1 amp maximum), and there is a finite
maximum it can power. You could try unplugging any extra USB
accessories to see if it makes any difference.

If I try plugging two webcams into my system USB things start to fail
in a very short time (a camera will go offline, the keyboard will fail,
a mouse will go erratic). To recover, I'd have to unplug all USB
devices, wait a moment, then reconnect just keyboard and mouse.
They're not identical models, so it shouldn't be a peculiar mistaking
of devices confusing it.

Re: webcam

2021-11-24 Thread Roger Heflin
I don't see a camera in lsusb.

So bad usb cable, bad usb socket, bad usb camera, or kernel issue
causing the driver to not allocate memory (or some other resource) and
finish loading.

so,
then does

lsmod | grep video

show the modules are loaded?

It didn't show up in the previous message where you did lsusb.

After you boot normally do you find 5986 in the output of dmesg?

How can I do it now?

There is no such thing as "installable drivers" in Linux. There's an
occasional OEM whose hardware does not have a working kernel driver, and
they supply a module for a specific kernel version. They're generally
laughed at, because they don't really understand how Linux works.

I don't see that the camera is being detected.  On my laptop with a working
camera

[egreshko@acer ~]$ lsusb

I doubt that it would be on the pci bus, but you could check with lspci.

Make/model of the laptop?  Could there be a switch to turn the camera on/off?

On the UVC device driver website only the Sweex WX060 is mentioned.
Did you try manually inserting the uvc kernel module (and make sure no
other webcam module is loaded)? (modprobe -v uvc)

Looking at the specs of the WC250 HD it has a VC0342 chip which seems
UVC compatible so uvc should theoretically be the right
driver:http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.drivers.uvc.devel/5880/match=vc0342

If the webcam is not recognized maybe it's just a matter of adding
177f:0250 identifier to the UVC driver code, recompile and try again but
that implies that you know how to do that.

Patrick

Re: webcam for linux

2010-03-08 Thread William John Murray

  hi all,

i am using fedora 12 ... in my dell laptop. i want to enable my
  web cam ...
just get cheese (webcam software for linux )

 yum install cheese

I am not sure that will work. It depends upon what application you
use. In Fedora 11 my Dell integrated cam 'just worked'; in F12 the 'evo'
web conference tool doesn't seem to recognise it - I get an error about
'no openGL found'
If you have problems, and can find a 'live' F11 to check with, it
might be worth testing.
