FWIW, there is a "workaround" to make the ugly entry in the boot menu
disappear: grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

This will change the menu entry to something like
"Fedora, with Linux 3.9.9-301.fc19.x86_64" - no more umlauts, no more
apostrophes (apostrophe's?)...

Greek. "Jesus" isn't a word used in either Hebrew or Aramaic, but it is
the greek translation of "Joshua."

Historically, it's "Schrödingers Katze", i. e. neither "s'", nor "s's".
He was from Austria and has been living for some time in Germany[1], so
he probably spoke German. Austrias official language is German[2].

The distinction between "Schrödingers'" and "Schrödingers" doesn't exist
in that language. We'd have to look at a quote from him to figure out
which one it might be.

Would it do any harm if I changed /etc/fedora-release to

I like the Strunk and White recommendation which is "'s" for names

Yeah. Although there's probably no chance of confusion here, Waterfalls' has
some ambiguity because an apostrophe after the "s" indicates a plural
possessive. That is, it could either be a cat belonging to the guy named
Waterfalls, or to the whole Waterfall family, and if you don't know which

linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.9.9-301.fc19.x86_64 [...] KEYTABLE=de-latin1-nodeadkeys

IIRC, it was displayed correctly, and I doubt that these parameters are
responsible for that. Besides, I end up with an English keyboard layout

Like "Schroedingers Cat"? ;)

There's something about fonts in grub.cfg:

/snip/
Schrödinger's Cat is a wallpaper, the default on Korora, and
perhaps on Fedora also.

`

BTW, why is it "Schrödinger's" and not "Schrödingers"? Schrödinger
wasn't a cat.

Schrödinger was a philosopher who dreamed up a thought experiment
involving a theoretical cat. Look up Schödinger's Cat on Google.

BTW: It's acceptable to spell the philosopher's name "Schroedinger"
if you don't have any umlauts in you machine.

Erwin Schrödinger was a Physicist, not a philosopher. His cat example
was a logical explanation of the quantum mechanical principal of
uncertainty.

because "'s" is the possessive form (at least in English), meaning
we're referring to something that belonged to "Schrödinger", while
the second form you show (i.e., sans apostrophe) means multiple
people/entities/things called Schrödinger.

Like "Schroedingers Cat"? ;)

There's something about fonts in grub.cfg:

,
| [...]
| if [ x$feature_default_font_path = xy ] ; then
|font=unicode
| else
| insmod part_msdos
| insmod ext2
| set root='hd2,msdos2'
| if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
| search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root --hint='hd2,msdos2'
5d251fe7-3b96-4aaa-9031-26400fd3bbc0
| else
| search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 5d251fe7-3b96-4aaa-9031-26400fd3bbc0
| fi
| font="/usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2"
| fi
|
| if loadfont $font ; then
| set gfxmode=auto
| load_video
| insmod gfxterm
| set locale_dir=$prefix/locale
| set lang=en_US
| insmod gettext
| fi
| terminal_output gfxterm
| [...]
`

BTW, why is it "Schrödinger's" and not "Schrödingers"? Schrödinger
wasn't a cat.

Schr?dinger?s Cat

2013-07-13 Thread Klaus-Peter Schrage
Is there any way to tell grub2 to display this somewhat nicer in the
menu, like in /etc/fedora-release: Schrödinger’s Cat.

Thanks
