Is pulseaudio running?  Could it be simply that muted?  Use pavucontrol to 
check.

Get access to the system so questions won't be so vague and there won't be a 
problem of telephone, if you know what I mean.  That'll help quite a bit.

Cripes...I should have my morning coffee before posting...wired 
network...running XFCE...output will be later when he brings the 
machine...and yes...lol...telephone was a major headache last 
night..especially since person on the other end seems to be a 
whistler... I wanted to reach through the screen and
