Returning to Mikkel's original comment:

The Display Manager is Gnome. The Desktop Environment is KDE. (Thanks
to Mikkel for clearing up the terminology.)

If I change the Display Manager to KDE, by installing a
file /etc/sysconfig/desktop containing DISPLAYMANAGER=KDE, the problem
disappears completely. But unfortunately the KDE Display Manager
doesn't work properly.

There certainly seems to be a problem in /var/log/gdm/:0-greeter.log,
which is attached. The greeter looks in 4 places for the file
gdm-shell.session and doesn't find it in any of them. The file is, in
fact at
/usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gdm-shell.session
which is included in the rpm
gdm-3.2.1.1-8.fc16.x86_64
This looks very plausible. What's broken? Why isn't the greeter
looking for gdm-shell.session at the place where it is?

At the end of /var/log/gdm/:0-greeter.log is a suspicious looking line:
(gnome-shell:1570): GConf-WARNING **: Got Disconnected from
DBus.
Could this have any connection with another problem I've been having:
very s-l-o-w response to certain requests, in particular an attempt to
"Send Link" from firefox?

In recent Fedora versions the file doesn't exist unless you create it.

Just so we are all using the same terms, the programs that brings up
the login screen is the Display Manager. What you get after you log
in is the desktop environment or window manager, depending on what
you run. KDE and Gnome are examples of a desktop environment. I do
not know about KDE, but you can run Gnome on top of a couple of
different window managers.

Currently I'm running KDE with the Desktop Environment set to Gnome as
follows:
/etc/sysconfig/desktop does not exist
and the window manager, which is set on the login screen and remembered
after setting, being KDE.

Things work properly except for the first login screen after a boot.

Despite arguing about the difference between a desktop environment and a
window manager I would like to know the following. Do you run KDE in the
following way? In the Login GUI after you enter you user name but not
yet you passwd there will be a slot in the lower left of the display
that allows you to set the desktop environment to Gnome, KDE, XFCE, etc.
To bring up KDE do you chose KDE and then enter you passwd. That should
set things up so KDE comes up whenever you login, Now is that how you
are bringing up KDE?

Thanks to all for your attention, though it is a little strange to read
speculations about what I want to do. I have been away from computers
for a few days and have not been able to read email. I want to find out
why the system is producing this unreadable message:
A problem h[]dministrator.
on a black screen at system startup ONLY and not when logging in again
on a running system. I definitely don't want to run Gnome, since I
don't like its user interface (personal preference). I have tried the
kdm login system, and it doesn't seem to work properly:
  * It doesn't remember the last session run and always starts me
(oddly) running Gnome unless I select KDE explicitly.
  * The Show List (of users) function which appears in
System Settings->Login Screen->Users doesn't seem to do
anything. No list appears on the login screen when it's
activated.
  * KDE keeps forgetting my font settings when I reboot the system.
(There may be something else going on here, but it certainly
looks that way.)
So I'm back to gdm.

The suggestion that the system is missing some "thyme" files is
interesting. What is "thyme"? There doesn't seem to be any rpm with
that name; the only rpm containing files of the form '*/thyme*' is
tuxpaint-stamps, which doesn't seem promising.

He's already using KDE. He suspects he has a problem because it's being
run from GDM and wants to change to KDM to check.

Any display manager can *in principle* run any desktop.

No - he wants to change the Display Manager, because he is getting a
blank background and an error message from the display manager.
Because he is using KDE as his desktop, he wants to use KDE for his
display manager as well. That will probably take care of the error
message. It is partially covered up by the login block, but we
suspect that it is complaining about missing thyme files.

Actually that is the way to switch desktop environments, not display
managers. A display manager is the interface which lets you login,
where as a desktop environment is the interface that you get after
login.

Display manager: gdm, kdm, xdm

Desktop environment: Gnome, KDE, XFCE, LXDE

It's easy to change to KDM. Create a /etc/sysconfig/desktop file
containing:

DISPLAYMANAGER=KDE

and reboot.

A very good suggestion, particularly since the problem arose after
installing a new video card, namely:
nVidia Corporation GT218 [GeForce 8400 GS] (rev a2)
In the process of installing the card the BIOS lost all its settings; I
set it up again, but may not have got things exactly right. (I change
BIOS settings about once every 3 years.)

Unfortunately a search of /var/log as root:
# find -type f | xargs fgrep Administrator
returns nothing. It looks like the display manager is gdm, since
/var/log/gdm exists and no other /var/log/*dm does. This may be a
problem, since I use KDE.

It sounds like the selected theme has a problem. But we would need
to know the display manager you are using, (kdm, gdm, or xdm) before
giving you the steps to fix it. The error message probably shows up
in the logs in /var/log or /var/log/(display manager)

Strange message at startup

2012-03-07 Thread Jonathan Ryshpan
When Fedora puts up the first login screen after system startup, the
screen is black except for the login area which shows the names of the
users who might want to log in, and a message partly blocked by the
login area which says:

A problem h[]dministrator.

The bar at the top of the screen showing the date at the center and
three controls at the right is missing.

There is (obviously) some problem that I should attend to, but it's not
clear what it is.

Any suggestions about what's happening or how to view the message?

Thanks - jon
