therefore, this reply...

Angelo, i hope you are still following your thread.

if i in anyway caused you any grief or lack of desire to follow up,
please accept my apologies and my personal request that respond.

there is a possibility that there may be a bug and only with your
response can such be cleared up.

anytime any package does not operate properly, cause of failure needs
to be determined so that problem can be corrected.

only with your response and help can this be done.

so, i asked that you please respond.

while waiting for your response, i may have found a problem related
with movie dvd's.

thank you.

tho i have not queried videoland site for operations of vlc, from what i
see of release that i have, VLC media player 2.0.8 Twoflower, from what i
have seen from this and previous versions, i tend to believe that vlc
checks devices on startup and monitors the devices when open via the
device drivers.

i base this on fact that when vlc is open and a cd or dvd is inserted into
either of my optical devices, a window pops up titled "Devices recently
plugged in:".

shortly after, in "Title" listing, an icon appears with type of an optical
disk with device listing of either 'cdda:///dev/sr0' or 'cdda:///dev/sr0'.
when i eject disc, icon disappears.

such tends to indicate that vlc _knows_whats_up_.

Guys, the last 25 or 30 replies on this thread have nothing to do with
solving Angelo's problem and instead has degenerated into a inane
discussion about email clients and whether or not SSL is secure or not
or how much you detest GMail or your retirement arrangements with the

let's try to solve Angelo's problem and not go off on some weird bloody
email-bashing tangent (and this is the second such thread I've seen
today).

Angelo, I can see two possible reasons VLC may not see the insertion of
a CD or DVD once it's running:

If you're running a desktop, check it's "Multimedia" options. Generally,
the desktop will "take over" the CD/DVD drive and when new media is
inserted, the desktop will try to invoke it's preferred player to handle
it. You may have to disable that on the desktop or tell it to use VLC.

If that's not the case, you may have to have VLC rescan available
devices when you insert a new piece of media. VLC does that on startup,
but I don't think it automatically does it periodically. YOU have to
tell it to.

To which I replied:

IOW my answer was a response to your associating online email systems

This is completely beside the point. I know about security issues,
subscribe to Bruce Schneier's newsletter, keep abreast with
developments in crypto and always update my system. I don't need
pointers to more information on these topics.

The point you appear to be making is that you don't use Gmail because
of potential MITM attacks. If that's not what you meant, then please
clarify. What I'm saying is that while you may have reasons not to use
Gmail, this has to be the weakest argument of all. You use email. To
secure your connection to a server you use SSL/TLS, whether it's Gmail
or somebody else, including a server you manage yourself, so what are
we even talking about?

ignoring the point that there are expectations about what you should be

You miss the point, that you're supposed to participate in a list in the
manner that the list has told you to do so. It's in the introductory
information, and the list members are telling you to do so, now.

In the business world, *you* are top posting because you're conforming

And in my experience most businesses are using Outlook and that makes
inline-quoting hard. So people started top-posting. So people top post.
People who are using mailing lists, especially on linux-related topics
rarely use Outlook, so they can quote inline and thus make everything

You miss the point, that you're supposed to participate in a list in the
manner that the list has told you to do so. It's in the introductory
information, and the list members are telling you to do so, now.

In the business world, *you* are top posting because you're conforming
to *their* norm. Have the courtesy to the same thing when you
participate in someone else's forum.

The real reason most people top-post elsewhere, is that they're
following an example already set for them, mostly by what happens when
they hit reply on their mail client. Which, for the majority of them,
was that crappy thing written by Microsoft which was utterly crap at
quoting text without mangling the paragraph formatting if it ever tried
to re-wrap it. So it simply quoted it below, verbatim.

While it *may* be convenient for *some* businesses for each message to
carry the entire dialogue, for the sake of keeping a record, it's not in
a convenient form to read (out-of-order, and usually badly mangled with
each new generation of the message). And it's highly inappropriate for
a Q&A type of session, which is what this forum usually is.

i.e. When diagnosing a problem, it starts out with someone expressing a
problem, they get suggestions to try, and asked some questions to narrow
down the problem. It's an awful lot easier to follow what's happened
when the answers are written along with each individual question, in
turn, and when everything else that doesn't need to be re-quoted gets
discarded.

And I see that even web forums are starting to see the light. They're,
now, starting to condense quoting, to place newer messages below the
older ones, so that you can read a thread in sequence, and not have to
zig-zag up and down the page.

Corporate email generally does not use Internet-style mailing lists, so
every message in a conversation quotes every previous message, ad
infinitum.

Technical lists such as this one come from a different tradition and
follow the conventions of Usenet newsgroups, which are oriented to
communicating with a large and constantly varying audience, and keeping
permanent archives of previous threads. The accepted way of commenting
is to quote only the specific parts you wish to comment on, and to
insert your remarks after the relevant parts.

This has all got quite amusing and quite what our personal situations have to
do with top-posting vs bottom-posting is another matter - i and lots of people
in this modern age get used to handling email on our portable devices (i don't
want to power up my linux box just to deal with email) and setting up a bottom
posted reply on a portable device is a pain!) - i suggest YOU read the
wikipaedia page on top vs bottom posting - you will see that it is an ongoing
debate!)
Fyi i worked for 35 yrs as programmer/software engineer/systems
Engineer and i am profoundly deaf with a cochlear implant - and i have a goof
pension thanks! - i dont normally make an issue of it!

tech firms are a bit diff in how they reply to emails due to higher level
of intelligence and intelligent thinking. ie, multi tasking brains.

were as you say, other type firms use reverse-chronological order because
they can not think interspersed, and most are backwards thinkers.

tho they do not understand reveres engineering.

If I were still working, and at a company where it was company policy,
I'd follow policy, but I'd also be looking for a job at a company that
doesn't suffer from cranial-rectal insertion.

The reason that businesses like top posting is that it puts everything
into reverse-chronological order, just like their paper files. That
doesn't make it right.

it is possible that you have a bad install. only way to find out is to
uninstall and reinstall, be sure you have _all_ packages installed.

if that does not correct, install from nux.ro.

my install is from nux.ro. my /etc/yum.repos.d/nux-desktop.repo file is;

my installed packages are;

  vlc
  vlc-core
  vlc-extras
  vlc-plugin-jack

that ability is built into vlc.

open VLC in desktop, insert a cd/dvd in drive.

after a short pause, VLC will show a folder icon with CD/DVD.

click the the "Play" icon at lower left, enjoy your music.

you may also change play order using the 2 leftmost icons along window
bottom.

if you wish to play a group of music cd's without having to insert,
copy them to below a common top directory by artist name followed by
album name.

such is accomplished by inserting cd in drive, after music has started,
click;

   Media > Save Play List

in "Save playlist as..." window, enter where ever you wish to save,
enter a name.

after you have added a group of albums, open a file browser, open top
director of where albums are save. split directory window, create a new
directory, ie, "a2z", (Atlanta Rhythm Section 2 ZZ Top). open each album
in artist directory, link each song to "a2z" directory.

open VLC, press , in "Open Directory", enter path to "a2z"
directory, double click "a2z".

select, or not, loop and random icons at bottom left.

enjoy your music.

You don't say how you installed vlc, or which desktop environment you
are using.

I see several vlc* packages here:

http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/updates/21/x86_64/

and for the GUI you probably need both vlc-core and vlc. That's what I
have on this box, which runs kde under Scientific Linux 7.2

There vlc appears in the 'Multimedia' group. It works well. Things are
similar on another box with Fedora 22, but I don't have that running at
present.

... but I'm surprised that no-one has suggested that you ought to
upgrade from Fedora 21, which reached end-of-life last year and is
probably no longer internet-safe.

Hello, Angelo,

'vlc' should give you the graphical interface and not, like in your
case, the cli.

So either you have
- a misconfiguration
- a broken installation.

So at first you can try to reset your configuration by
vlc --reset-config

If that does not help, go the brutal way:
rm -rf ~/.config/vlc/

If your installation is broken, uninstall vlc and install it again (I
guess you received vlc from rpmfusion?)

I am curious as to why you seem to call VLC in interactive mode
instead of passing the file name as a parameter.

vlc whateverfile works for me

By the way, VOB is the file format for video material inside a video
