Well explained Kevin,

freshclam is part of "clamav-update" from Fedora repos:

Eg in my system (f13 i686):

rpm -qf /usr/share/man/man5/freshclam.conf.5.gz
clamav-update-0.95.3-1301.fc13.i686

You didn't read what he typed.

man 5 freshclam.conf
   ^

Note the ".conf" on the end of the name!

it lives here:

/usr/share/man/man5/freshclam.conf.5.gz

and is a part of the clamav RPM. I get mine from atrpms. YMMV

Systems running windows from an infected disk are often unable to find
the infection, as the infection often installs a root kit that hides the
infection from the virus scanner.

When you boot linux and scan the disk using clamav you have a good
chance of finding infections that even expensive anti virus apps running
on the infected windows system couldn't find.

I have several times found infections on running windows systems by
remotely mounting their C: drive (the C$ share) on my linux box and
running clamav on them. That way I can check them without downtime.

How does the infection get past the windows anti-virus? It could either
be something new that wasn't detected yet when you got infected. Or (as
in my case) systems that need to have anti-virus disabled for certain
data directories and applications because of performance problems.
Combine that with a need to allow connections to that same app from the
internet... Recipe for infections.

I usually find 3 different 'hits' on infected systems, and when looking
up the signatures on the web I usually find that one is the component
that initially infected the system. That one then downloads and installs
a root kit to hide itself, and then a backdoor to offer services.

AFAIK, ClamAV (the engine of.) is more efficient then all AV software
except Kaspersky AV.

See review here:

http://cybernetnews.com/best-linux-antivirus-kaspersky-clam-norton/

To install ClamAV on Fedora or RHEL (through EPEL) (as root):

yum clamav-filesystem clamav-data clamav-lib clamav-update

Update AV DB (as root):
freshclam

That actually happens often with the nastiest critters. You commonly
simply don't boot from that machine to kill 'em--pull the drive(s) and
scan with either another Windows machine or a Linux box while the
critters are quiescent and can't defend themselves.

Hi JD;

Haven't actually tried it but if it's a dual boot or the windows partition is
mountable, any virus scanner running on linux should be able to check it.
Don't know if it would meet your needs but BitDefender for unices is free for
non-commercial use. My wife runs the windows version on her win7 desktop and
it seems to work quite well (course ya gotta pay for that one).

I came across an article that mentioned some viruses
that can hide and move around on a booted windows
machine, and can evade virus scanner.
So, I thought that is the windows partition can be scanned
by another booted OS like linux it would make it impossible
for the virus to evade detection and quarantine.
Is there such a scanner than can be run from Linux?

I have Windows XP running under Virtualbox on my laptop (no
virtualization assist on the chip), as well as on my desktop. I have
used both KVM as well as Virtualbox (as I do present Virtualization on
the Desktop) to several Boston area user groups. My primary need for
running Windows was so that my wife could run RealPlayer superpass.
While there is a Linux native Realplayer, the authentication requires
MSIE, and the most recent realplayer that works under WINE or Crossover
Office is version 8). In my case, sound is mandatory, and I have had
success with both Virtualbox (64-bit) and KVM. There are very few
reasons you need to run Windows native. If you do not have
virtualization enabled on your mother board, then I would strongly
suggest that you try Virtualbox. If you do have virtualization support
both in the CPU and the BIOS, then KVM is an excellent option.

I believe the command is `qemu-kvm '. I would suggest
using virt-manager or virsh. If you are using kvm, they provide you with
a very easy to use interface. virt-manager is GUI interface and virsh is

My point was ...

If you have the cdrom (and, or course, the license key), it's really a no
brainer. Install off the cdrom WITHIN virt-manager into an image file, is
straight forward. QEMU if you don't have VT support, KVM if you do. All this
nonsense about mbr and grub and what not earlier this thread is completely
irrelevant because you're installing into a vm. The file itself *becomes* the "C
drive" ...

Normally, if you install *nix then install Windows, Windows will over
write the loader and you will end up with only XP booting, however it is
possible to recover by using a LiveCD. If you install XP then install
*nix you do not have this problem. I can't remember where I found the
article, it was either while searching for Ubuntu or Gentoo stuff, and
it is a little more involved then simply install windows first, but you
can do it

I would recommend VirtualBox over qemu. You don't need hardware
virtualization support in VB. Or try KVM, but VB seems pretty easy to
setup.

I would recommend NTFS over FAT32. Keep in mind NTFS is read/write
supported in Fedora.

Be very careful. I think XP will automatically write the NTLDR
(Windows boot system) to the primary drive and primary partition even
if you install elsewhere. So you might possible destroy your Fedora
GRUB (your Fedora data/partitions should be safe).

You might consider unplugging the first drive when installing XP. So
you don't accidentally overwrite something on the main drive. That
being said it might be least destructive to have XP on the first
partition on the 2nd drive (assuming that's possible).

You can always later use GRUB to chainload. Adding XP to boot from
GRUB is very simple 2 lines to '/boot/grub/grub.conf'

title Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
chainloader +1

hd1 = 2nd drive (hd0 would be first)
0 = first partition

I have not done this in a long time, but was successful in the past.

You don't say what problems you are having with qemu. I use XP with
KVM, except for sound everything just works[TM]. Just boot the vm with
the XP disc and follow the usual installation procedure for Windows
either with qemu-kvm (as root or with sudo) on the command line or
with the virt-manager gui.

It has been a long time since I installed XP,

But, as I remember the only option I had at that time was the first hard drive..

Good luck with that..

You could check to see if you can change the boot disk in BIOS..

If so, you could select Operating System that way??

YMMV

Windows partition?

2010-04-01 Thread Paul
Hi,

I've been trying to install XP using qemu for almost 24 hours now. I
have one specific task that I need XP for (Winforms design). I can't get
Visual C# 2005 to work under Wine or Crossover Office so I need to get
something working.

I have a shed load of space on a secondary drive, so I was thinking of
making a 20Gb partition on it (as FAT32), booting from an XP disc and
installing onto there.

I don't know if it will be a problem installing to a secondary drive
rather than primary, so advise is needed here. Is it safe to do this or
am I going to trash things by doing it?
