Say, did anyone package that for Fedora? I'd like to take a look... ;-)

It depends upon what you like. I use GNOME, but mostly just to
manage windows. I don't use the file browser, or any of the GUI
stuff from the menus. The only menu items I use are "Lock Screen",
"Logout" and the little icon clicks on the workspace bar for
starting my mail reader and browser. I use those about once
per boot up, which is about once per 200 days. Once I have a
terminal window, I just clone it using the right click and
"open terminal", so I guess that's another. Mostly, I use
command line stuff, so for me it wouldn't matter. I don't use
the editors which came with GNOME, gedit or whatever it is.
I use eog, but from the command line with a file name. I use
GIMP once in a while because the version of eog I have is broken
and can't print, but I do it also with the command line and
a file name.

If you use the menus a lot, and the provided editors and
whatnot with the file browser, then I guess it would make
a difference which you liked.

So I would go for both one by one and see. First, say most of the
people say, KDE would be easier (for those who are novices in Linux),
so install that first.

CLI FOREVER ! :)

That was DOS. The Amiga had a very advanced (for its day) graphic interface a
couple years before MS introduced Windows 1.0. I rarely needed to use the
Amiga CLI.

FWIW, today, there is a Linux window manager, AmiWM, that gives Linux the look
of the classic AmigaOS 3.x Workbench for those die hard Amiga groupies. Of
which, I'm not one. Got rid of all my Amiga stuff 10 years ago.

A basic question indeed. :-)

Yes, like almost everybody states it is very personal.

I'm GNOME follower. And I hate KDE. In fact I hated it from my first try
and I hate it even more with all its candy changes in KDE 4. And believe

Why? I do not know... At last there are a lot of people that love it and

means they find it real good.

So, you see, it IS personal. It's like asking around which beer is

I suspect that the answer depends solely on whether you come to Linux
from Mac or Windows.

GNOME <-> Mac

KDE <-> Windows

The handling of user-switching in KDE told the tale. In GNOME, all you
get is a "New Login" option in a menu. As for switching among sessions?
Well, that's what comes of not knowing how to do that on a Mac.

KDE handles that exactly the same way that Windows does. It even has
some of the same button designs.

I imagine that the two desktops will each appeal to different groups of
users that come to Linux from different GUI families.

I also imagine that they'll be the "Republicans and Democrats" of
desktops. (That's a Yankee-ism. For you British, make that "Tories and
Labourites", or "Tories and Liberals" in Canada. Alex, this might be
your "Christian Democrats" and "Social Democrats.")

First of all, the OPs question is so ill-defined as to be meaningless,
so I don't intend to answer it. In fact it sounds like a troll to me.
However arguing for one desktop over another on the basis of specific

I'm a long time GNOME user, and I've never had this problem. Which is
not to deny that others may legitimately think differently. As suggested
earlier, why not try different ones, you can select which you use at
logon.

I also like XFCE, as well.

Lol yeah that sounds about right.

They both have their strong points IMO. I was a GNOME user for a long time
and later switched to KDE.
GNOME has a simplicity thing about it that makes it easier to use sometimes.
 But if you're a die-hard GNOME user
and then switch to KDE and really give it a chance, I think you'll find that
KDE has a lot of nice features that GNOME just
doesn't have. And I don't mean just eye-candy stuff (although KDE's menus,
etc. are easier on the eyes and look more modern).

Like for example, if you do any programming, and you like to use a GUI text
editor sometimes,
compare the features of Gedit to Kate...

As far as I'm concerned they are both intensely user-hostile.
They insist on changing the way everything works and is laid out
on a regular basis, so your most frequent impression is "What
the Hell?!"

A very basic thing I would like to ask if KDE is more user friendly
then GNOME desktop?
