Re: [one-users] HA ONED / SUNSTONE considerations

2013-10-15 Thread Ruben S. Montero
Hi

Just in case you missed it, there is a HA guide, describing a setup similar
to the one described in your email:

http://opennebula.org/documentation:rel4.2:oneha

I'd say that the most difficult part is providing a proper fencing
mechanism for the hosts running the oned/sunstone VMs, and not only for the
VMs itself.

Cheers

Ruben

Re: [one-users] can I bakup vm use opennebula

2013-10-15 Thread Ricardo Duarte
Hi,

I can give you my example:

I'm currently backing up my datastores (/var/lib/one/datastore) directories,
the database and my One server.
- I issue a virsh suspend for all VMs running on my one hosts, then do a
snapshot on my storage device (you can also do it with LVM), and then I copy
the directory contents from the snapshot to tape.
- I also dump the One database with Mysql dump, and also copy to the same tape
- As my One server is virtualized I also copy it's VM to storage (don't suspend
it tho)

In case of disaster:
- I restore the One server
- Then I restore the database
- Then, I restore the datastore directories
- And then I start the One daemons

In case I just want to retrieve a VM

Scenario 1: the vm is still running
- I shutdown the VM
- Restore the /var/lib/one/datastore// directory
- Power on the VM again

Scenario 2: the vm was deleted, and I want it back to the One server
- Restore the /var/lib/one/datastore// directory
- Create a new machine, from the same template, and power it off
- Copy the disk from the restored machine to the new machine
- Power the machine on

Scenario 3: the vm was deleted, and I just want my data
- Restore the /var/lib/one/datastore// directory
- use libguestfs to get the contents from the virtual disk, if it is a qcow2;
use a mount -o loop if it is raw

Regards,
Ricardo

Re: [one-users] Some questions about over overcommitment in OpenNebula 4.2 using KVM

2013-10-15 Thread Shankhadeep Shome
I just configure the monitor driver to report 2x the cpu than it normally
does. Basically when the monitor picks up the amount of cpu, lets say 1600
for a 16 core cpu, I configure the monitor to report 3200 or some other
multiplier. I find scheduling with cgroups a bit hairy, I do use cpusets to
jail vms to specific numa nodes and avoid cross memory domain traffic but
that's about it.

Thank you - it works now.
I've added BRIDGE_LIST, mounted DS on Vmware ESXi hosts.
Space monitor works OK and I'm able to create new images (vmdk disks on

Hi Dmitri,

Did you add the BRIDGE_LIST parameter to the datastore template? It is
needed for the drivers to know which ESX hosts to use to register
images in the datastores. It needs an space separated list.

Re: [one-users] OpenNebula with additional storage

2013-10-15 Thread Dmitri Chebotarov
Hi Amier

I don't think you have to use 0 and 1 datastores.
You can create image and system datastores and mount it to GlusterFS.
For example, create a new image datastore, let's say ONE assigns ID 120:
 - create/export volume DS120 from openfiler
 - mount it on one controller and all hosts under /var/lib/one/datastores/120

Create cluster and system datastore (ie. 121) and do the same, you can point it
to faster storage – this is where running VMs store disks.

hi,

any idea on this?

part of that, is /var/lib/one/datastores not necessary export from frontend?

Hi Ruben,

Thanks give some explanation. Just to ensure I have same picture and understand
your words.

  1. I'm planned to use GlusterFS or iSCSI (openfiler) for both my datastore 1
and 2.
  2. Do you mean default and system (0 and 1) can be expand to external
storage?
  3. Is that mean when I use ID 100 for datastore1 (192.168.1.11) then
datastore2 (192.168.8.12) must be use ID 101 or must use same ID 100?

Is the structure look like this?
/var/lib/one/datastore/0<-- default created by OpenNebula | default
internal storage or can expand to external storage
/var/lib/one/datastore/1<-- default created by OpenNebula | default
inernal storage or can expand to external storage
/var/lib/one/datastore/101 < mount point from datastore 1
/var/lib/one/datastore/102 < mount point from datastore 2

Thanks you.

Hi

So I assume that you have 2 different NFS shares (or equivalent):

About Mount Points

They **must** use the same ID as the one assigned by OpenNebula. So if you want
datastore with ID 100 be backed by datastore1 (192.168.8.11), then you must
mount the volume on

/var/lib/one/datastore/100. Same apply to 0,1 default and system datastores
created by OpenNebula by default.

About Datastore Types and Usage

There are two types of Datastores: Images where you usually store base images
(e.g. default ID:1) and system where the VMs run from (e.g. system ID:0). And
there are three types of images: persistent no copy from image to system
datastores (link); no-persistent images are copied (cloned) to the system
datastore; and volatile disks, always created in the datastore.

Summary, register an image (oneimage create) will take space from your image
DS, deploying a vm (onevm deploy) will take space from your system DS. How much
space? It depends on the image (persistent vs non-persistent) and the format
raw vs qcow2.

You also need to consider that checkpoints (suspend/stop a VM) will generate a
checkpoint file to be stored also in the system DS

Hope you can now plan better your storage.

Cheers

Ruben

The reason for NFS is hardware only provides NFS exports (NetApp filer, no
iSCSI license).

I may need a little bit more help.
I've added a datastore (id 139) as Vmware VMFS, checked that both DS_MAD
and TS_MAD set to 'vmfs', also set Base Path to '/vmfs/volumes' (before
adding DS).

When ONED tries to monitor new Vmware VMFS datastore I get the error:

Hi,

Indeed, the process is exactly the same, what changes is the method
you use to mount the datastore in the ESX host, but for OpenNebula is
completely transparent (both of them will be handled with the 'vmfs'
drivers).

Any reason in particular for using NFS instead of VMFS? due to the
available hardware or is the reason something else?

[one-users] VMware VMFS vs NFS

2013-10-15 Thread Dmitri Chebotarov
Hi

I'm trying to add few ESXi hosts to ONE.
Is it a different approach when using NFS shared storage and not VMware
VMFS?
Documentation I find on web-site suggests using VWware VMFS, but I'm not
sure if the same procedure applies in case of NFS storage...

Re: [one-users] Lecture about OpenNebula

2013-10-15 Thread Carlo Daffara
I address some of the points on openstack/cloudstack/eucalyptus vs opennebula
in my presentation at the latest conference;
(video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=3C1heF0vwhc
)
basically, it's a problem of what cloud architecture is a better fit for your
needs, the amount of tinkering necessary to have a working product, and the
much smaller codebase of OpenNebula that however provides most of the features
of the competing platforms.
Of course, this is my personal view.

Hello,

I'm making a 20mn slideshow about OpenNebula at my work.

I want to begin with history of the project and would like to reproduce
your timeline[1].

Is it possible to get a vectorial version to include in my LaTeX beamer,
and under which license (the web one have no exiv license data).

Do you have some materials for the obvious question I'll asked:

  Why not choose OpenStack?

I have my own answer: I did not manage to setup one and OpenNebula can
be installed on a standalone server.

But do you have any point for common pitfalls?

Regards.

Regards.

Currently, security groups are not supported in OpenNebula. You can define
"white_ports" and "black_ports" per vm [1], but you cannot define a set and
reuse them. There is a feature request in our dev page, with a patch to
implement this on one-3.2 but we couldn't include it [2]. We can consider
it for upcoming releases.
