Re: [one-users] sunstone says : "OpenNebula is not running"

2012-05-01 Thread biro lehel
Hello,

Could you paste the contents of oned.log then? It should
be located under /var/log/one/ folder. Maybe we can find more information
 there about the problem.

Also, did you check if ONE_AUTH
environment variable is properly set (pointing to the one_auth file,
usually located under $HOME/.one/one_auth, and containing a single
unencrypted line "oneadmin:password", where $HOME is the home folder of
oneadmin user)?

Cheers,
Lehel.

Good morning,

I'm trying to setup open nebula on an opensuse 12.1

I followed this document (which, if you do exactly the steps is NOT working at
the end):

SDB:Cloud OpenNebula - openSUSE

The problem is that I can't get sunstone server working. I double checked the
settings, etc, no way I'll get it to work.

Sunstone server systematically answers :

"OpenNebula is not running"

But, I confirm that open nebula IS running, here's a ps -ef | grep one :

Re: [one-users] KVM drivers fail to load? [MAD did not answer INIT command]

2012-04-21 Thread biro lehel
Hi,

I've found out that the reason for my problems was that libvirtd was
continuously crashing at start-up on my OpenNebula Front-End. Since I didn't
manage to repair it so far, for the time being, I disabled it completely, and
this seemed to make the error disappear, that is, my KVM drivers are loaded
successfully ever since.

However, I got a question here, which might be naive, but I got really curious
now: shouldn't the hypervisor, virtualization drivers, libvirt settings and all
the related stuff be affecting OpenNebula only in case of the hosts? How (and
why) does the fact that libvirt is crashing on my front-end affect the ONE
system?

Thanks,
Lehel.

Hi Ruben,

No, I'm running OpenNebula on a 'normal' physical machine, with which I didn't
have problems so far. Apart from heavy load, IYHO, could anything else be
possibly causing such malfunction?

Cheers,
Lehel.

Hi,
Are you running the OpenNebula  on a VM? We've seen this type of error when
OpenNebula is started under
heavy-load (usually in a VM low on CPU resources)

Re: [one-users] Trouble setting VM's hostname

2012-04-19 Thread biro lehel
Hello Pedro,

Indeed, my problem was that the init.sh script has not been at all executed.
I've spent the last day trying to trace down the problem, which was rather
weird, since the exact same configuration (as presented in the example in the
documentation you provided, too) worked on another one of my images, and the
init.sh script was properly called. I didn't manage to find the cause, however,
I did manage to solve my problem with a simple workaround applicable in my
case, which was to set the following script as an init script on my respective
image:

# OpenNebula Network Contextualization
MAC=`ifconfig eth0|grep HWaddr|awk '{print $5}'`

for i in `echo $MAC|cut -d: -f3-|tr : ' '`; do
    [ -n "$IP" ] && IP=$IP.
    let c=0x$i
    IP=${IP}$c
done

GATEWAY=`echo $IP|cut -d. -f1-3`.1

ifconfig eth0 $IP netmask 255.255.0.0
route add default gw $GATEWAY

hostname "SLAVE${IP:9:12}"

This last line sets the hostname at the first boot to
, and that was just
what I needed.

Thank you for taking the time to answer.

Cheers,
Lehel.

Hello,

Are you sure that your init script is running at VM startup?
If so, be sure to 'source' the file context.sh that contains $HOSTNAME
definition, before running your script.

If you are using hdc as your device where the contextualization image will be
available, you can use something like this at startup:

#!/bin/sh -e

mount -t iso9660 /dev/sdc /mnt

if [ -f /mnt/context.sh ]; then
  . /mnt/init.sh

fi

umount /mnt
exit 0

Take a look at last section (EXAMPLE) here:
http://opennebula.org/documentation:archives:rel3.2:cong
For opensuse init script, read this:

Re: [one-users] VM forced deletion? [VM hanging in CLEANUP state]

2012-04-17 Thread biro lehel
Okay, so far, for my hung VM, I have set the "default" values for the deleted
VM's in the vm_pool table of one.db (more precisely, I have set: last_poll=0,
state=6, lcm_state=0), and also, in the leases table, I have freed the
respective IP address (=0, =-1).

However, I'm looking for a confirmation if this is okay, or it can cause
inconsistencies. Is anything else need to be done?

Thanks,
Lehel.

Dear all,

I have a VM that apparently got hung in the CLEANUP state (now for quite a
while). The problem is, I would need it's fixed IP to be used for another VM.
"Delete" action from Sunstone has no effect on the hung VM, it disappears from
the VM-list but it reappears at the next refresh.

Is there any way to manually force the VM's deletion (take it out from the DB)?

Thank you,
Lehel.

Re: [one-users] SaaS with opennebula cloud

2012-04-02 Thread biro lehel
I'll just put this on the list, it seems like Daniel is busy, but maybe someone
else can help me with an answer.

Thank you in anticipation,
Lehel.

Daniel, two more things..

When creating a new occi template, can I use as IMAGE_ID an ID of an existing
peristent image (of course one that is not currently USED)?
At the moment I have some persistent images, from which I configured and set-up
VM's with some specific software (I'm working on building a kind of "platform"
above the "infrastructure"), and I intend these VM's to be used by end-users.
In my original templates (that are using the persistent images), besides the
image disk definition, I had some further disks defined (type FS and SWAP).
Would these disks be available if I pass only the persistent image ID in my
new_occi_template.erb? I mean, would I get "the very same VM back"?

Also, I read that Self Service currently supports only ranged networks. Does
this mean that there is no way to set for a specific VM a specific IP
 address?

Thank you in anticipation,
Lehel.

OpenNebula Self-Service is a simplified GUI aimed to end-users,
offering a simplified access to shared infrastructure for non-IT end
users.

The administrator will configure a set of instance_types that the
end-user will be able to select without taking care of the VM
configuration. The user can login to this portal and interact with his
resources.

The VirtualNetworks and Images can be exposed in three different ways:
1. The administrator creates the VNETs and Images through the one*
tools and distributes these resources in different instance_types. The
end-user will just have to select the desired instance_type

$ onevnet create occi_vnet
ID: 2
$ oneimage create occi_image
ID:3
$ cat $ONE_LOCATION/etc/occi_templates/new_occi_template.erb
CPU=1
MEMORY=1024
DISK=[IMAGE_ID=3]
NIC=[NETWORK_ID=2]
$ cat
 $ONE_LOCATION/etc/occi.conf
[...]
:instance_types:
  [...]
  :new_occi_template:
    :template: new_occi_template.erb
    :cpu: 1
    :memory: 1024

2. The administrator creates the VNETs and Images through the one*
tools and makes them available for the end-user. The end-user selects
which instance_type he wants to use and what image and network
throught the GUI interface.

$ onevnet create occi_vnet
ID: 2
$ oneimage create occi_image
ID:3
$ cat $ONE_LOCATION/etc/occi_templates/new_occi_template.erb
CPU=1
MEMORY=1024
$ cat $ONE_LOCATION/etc/occi.conf
[...]
:instance_types:
  [...]
  :new_occi_template:
    :template: new_occi_template.erb
    :cpu: 1
    :memory: 1024

3. The end-user is allowed to create VNETs (you can also define a base
template for this) and upload Images and
can select them for a new
instance through the GUI interface

$ cat $ONE_LOCATION/etc/occi_templates/new_occi_template.erb
CPU=1
MEMORY=1024
DISK=[IMAGE_ID=3]
NIC=[NETWORK_ID=2]
$ cat $ONE_LOCATION/etc/occi.conf
[...]
:instance_types:
  [...]
  :new_occi_template:
    :template: new_occi_template.erb
    :cpu: 1
    :memory: 1024

If you want to enable VNC you have to add the following line to the templates:
GRAPHICS = [
  TYPE    = "vnc",
  LISTEN  = "0.0.0.0",
  PORT    = "5"]

Hope this helps

Hector,

Indeed, the problem is that the wsproxy process remains hanging after some
time. Killing it manually makes the error disappear, thank you very much for
the hint.
However, I think that this still is a bug.

Hello,

which version of OpenNebula are you
 using?

It looks like wsproxy process is not conveniently terminated after closing the
connection. A more convinient workaround would be to kill the wsproxy process
in the frontend manually I guess.

I have opened a ticket to keep track of this and see if I can reproduce it as
well. http://dev.opennebula.org/issues/1201

[one-users] noVNC error: "Server disconnected" [socket.error: [Errno 98] Address already in use] ?

2012-03-31 Thread biro lehel
Hello,

I seem to have a noVNC-related issue. From time-to-time, I get a "Server
disconnected" error, when accessing my VM's through VNC. I've noticed that it
usually (only) happens when I was previously connected to that specific VM (for
which the error occurs) through VNC for an extended period of time (but not
more than 10-15 minutes), closed the connection, and then tried to reconnect
(this is where I get the error). It never happened (so far) in situations other
than this, if the VNC-connections are short-termed in time, I can close and
reconnect to VM's through VNC as many times as I want.

The only workaround I've found so far is rebooting both the front-end and the
respective host, which, as you can imagine, is rather inconvenient to do each
time this error occurs.

sunstone.log contains the following about the
 error:

Starting vnc proxy: /usr/share/one/noVNC/utils/wsproxy.py 35822 pcls:5946

    sock.bind(addrs[0][4])

127.0.0.1 - - [31/Mar/2012 12:08:32] "POST /vm/46/stopvnc HTTP/1.1" 200 - 0.0856

Since I'm not an expert in Python, I didn't want to dig myself into the
above-named files so far.

Any ideas what should I check, or what should I do?

Thank you,
Lehel.

I would also be interested, too, on this question. Not precisely on the SaaS
aspect, since I think I got the idea about that, but instead: is there any way
for an end-user (NON-OpenNebula user) to "communicate" with / pass commands to
OpenNebula (eventually by using a designated OpenNebula account, but at the
same time not being aware of this)?

Cheers,
Lehel.

hi, we have developed the opennebula cloud with front end and 5 worker nodes ,
we can successfully create the VM and can deploy them on the worker nodes.Hence
we are able to run the windows as well as linux on the dom U of the worker
nodes(using XEN) . We are using centos 5.0 on the worker nodes as the host
os.We can also manage using Sunstone GUI.

now we want to provide the software/application to the end user via browser/web
interface but we don't have proper guidance for that, can we enable the end
user to use the software (i.e matlab) via browser and if yes then what
configuration is left ? , please guide us on that .

Re: [one-users] Error when instantiating VM from persistent image

2012-03-29 Thread biro lehel
Hi Jhon,

The qemu configuration was fine, and also the NFS is (or
at least seems to be) working fine, the problem indeed was with the
permission settings of the specific image file in the /images directory.
It only had RW permissions for owner (oneadmin) and root, and forbidden
 for others.

The problem is now solved, the VM's created from the
persistent image are running, and I indeed checked their persistency
after a graceful shutdown.

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer, and for your detailed
description.

Have a great day,
Cheers,
Lehel.

Hi,

it looks like this is the problem:
> Wed Mar 28 10:50:00 2012 [VMM][I]: error: internal error process
> exited while connecting to monitor: qemu-kvm: -drive
> file=/var/lib/one//25/images/disk.2,if=none,id=drive-ide0-0-0,format=raw:
> could not open disk image /var/lib/one//25/images/disk.2: Permission
> denied

At this point it would appear that oneadmin has access to the disk image file
/var/lib/one//25/images/disk.2, but qemu does not. The error is coming from
qemu.

As far as I know, the difference between a persistent image and a non
persistent image is that, when it is not persistent, the image get copied by
oneadmin and new permissions are set on the new file, but when you are using a
persistent image, a symbolic link is created.

With symbolic links, the permissions of the link are not important, the
permissions on the original file are used.

So, when you look at the file that is listed as the "SOURCE" of your image.
(Should be something like
/var/lib/one/images/c0dc71ebe6562d4e8c9e186b249bff13,
what are the permissions and is qemu (on the execution node) able to read&write
to it?

Probably that is the problem and the next thing to look for is why his file is
not readable by qemu. The file was created by oneadmin at the time the onimage
command was run on the opennebula server to create the Image object.

Now the qemu process on the execution node is trying, and failing, to access
the file.

Do you have special directory permissions on the image directory? Is it an NFS
mount that is doing "strange" things?

A couple of other things that could be related:
- did you set dynamic_ownership = 0 in the qemu.conf file onthe execution node?
- did you change the user or group the qemu process is running as?

I hope this is of some help to you,

Wkr,

Jhon

I can create and run VM's whenever I leave the registered image-file

[one-users] Set the number of VM's instantiated - but not through Sunstone or CLI?

2012-03-27 Thread biro lehel
Hello,

Is there any way to set the number of created VM's that would use a specific
(same) image file?
What I want to obtain is the following: I would have some kind of an "end-user"
(the point is, NOT an OpenNebula-user), that would need to specific three
parameters (let's say, through a config file): his needed CPU, his needed
Memory, and the number of VM's he would like to have for this configuration.
Then, I would have a previously pre-set and pre-filled OpenNebula template,
which my system should complete with the CPU and Memory information. Finally,
the number of the instantiated VM's (set by the user) should be communicated
with OpenNebula - and this is what my question refers to.

Is there a way to do this? Also, how can an end-user communicate with (that is,
how can I "propagate" the information to) OpenNebula? Don't think of huge
security issues here, I only have a small research/test environment, not a
production one. I could even use oneadmin's credentials for him, I just don't
know how to "externally" access OpenNebula, if possible.

Thank you, and waiting for your answers,
Lehel.

Hello,

Thank you both Poul and Olivier for your answers. Poul, regarding my
environment: it is small-scale experimental environment (up to ~10 VM's), NOT a
production one.  For experimental and test cases, should I go with the solution
written by Olivier, or is it still more easier and convenient to use Kerberos?
I would like to choose the most easily implementable solution here, since I'm a
bit running out of time.

Regarding Olivier's solution.. as I understand, it's basically the same than
the method for obtaining passwordless ssh between the physical nodes, described
at [1]. My question is, what is the difference
(if any) between setting up pwdless ssh between the physical machines, and
setting up pwdless ssh between the VM's? Also, Olivier, you have mentioned this:

time you load the ssh key for a file set in CONTEXT
template, with a key
 >dedicated per user. Or, still at boot time, you
trigger a server (you made) to get a SSH

I'm not exactly sure what these mean. Could you or anyone else please detail
what to do to obtain these boot-time settings?

Setup a Kerberos server and use tickets. You do not need to arrange
private/public keys on every server (host/vm's).

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for the most convenient setting to be able to
passwordlessly ssh between the VM's created by OpenNebula.
I've noticed that the settings which provide passwordless
ssh from the Front-end (or Hosts) into VM's do not deal
with this, the system is still asking for a password if I
want to ssh from VM into VM. So, did I do something wrong,
and in theory, the exact same steps would need to be
followed in case of VM's too, or is there some trick?

To enable password less communication between VMs you need top
create a SSH key for a user (root?) that will be in all you VMs.

You should also disable in ssh_config the know_hosts feature (or
redirect it to /dev/null).

For SSH there are multiple means. You create a VM with a SSH key
inside, the drawback is the SSH key is the same for all VMs e.g. all
users, this is not secure but for test only it would fit.

At boot time you load the ssh key for a file set in CONTEXT
template, with a key dedicated per user. Or, still at boot time, you
trigger a server (you made) to get a SSH key from the VM ip.

Olivier

Re: [one-users] Passwordless ssh between VM's?

2012-03-22 Thread biro lehel

Regarding Olivier's solution.. as I understand, it's basically the same than
the method for obtaining passwordless ssh between the physical nodes, described
at [1]. My question is, what is the difference (if any) between setting up
pwdless ssh between the physical machines, and setting up pwdless ssh between
the VM's? Also, Olivier, you have mentioned this:

 >At boot
time you load the ssh key for a file set in CONTEXT
template, with a key
 >dedicated per user. Or, still at boot time, you
trigger a server (you made) to get a SSH
 >key from the VM ip.

I'm not exactly sure what these mean. Could you or anyone else please detail
what to do to obtain these boot-time settings?

Thank you,
Lehel.

Setup a Kerberos server and use tickets. You do not need to arrange
private/public keys on every server (host/vm's).

[one-users] GRID-like functionalities with OpenNebula as a base? [Hadoop, or other possible solutions]

2012-03-21 Thread biro lehel
---My first email didn't seem to reach the list (or it's just Yahoo playing
with me...),
---so I copy it once again here. I hope it will work this time.

Dear
 all,

After having successfully set up a small-scale (but
up-and-running) experimental Private Cloud (using OpenSUSE 12.1 64bit
machines -also VM's-, KVM as hypervisor, and ONE 3.2.0), my next task is
to find a way in which GRID-like services (see below) could be
implemented inside an OpenNebula-based Cloud. Basically, and
architecturally-speaking, I think I would need a PaaS layer above my
existing IaaS layer.

I am interested in the following tasks:

* job distribution among a set of dynamically created (or, as a start, fixed)
VM's, initiated
 by a master-VM
* job execution on the worker-VM's and, more importantly, execution monitoring
of these jobs by the master-VM
* results gathering on the master-VM

I
have briefly looked though Hadoop, which uses MapReduce, but, having no
experience with it, I am not sure whether if it is the best tool to use
for such a use-case, and also, I don't know if it could be at all used
in my environment. So, my fundamental question is the following: which
is the best way to start on, a way that would lead to satisfying my
above-mentioned 3 necessities?
Is Hadoop perfectly compatible with
OpenNebula, and could be used for such purposes, or are there other and
more fitting solutions or tools to use? Basically, all I'm asking is, what is
the most appropriate
way for obtaining these basic GRID-computing functionalities on a Platform
constructed above the Infrastructure?

Any suggestions, thoughts, and hints are extremely welcome, since this is a
rather important and
 urgent matter for me.

Thank you,

[one-users] [openSUSE 12.1 + OpenNebula 3.2.0 + KVM. Template to be used?]

2012-03-14 Thread biro lehel
Okay, I just bumped into Suse Studio right after sending my previous mail; I
must have been a moron for not discovering it before. As I understood, it
provides me with a raw image file (with .raw extension), so my only question
related to this matter is: can this .raw file be used in the exact same manner
as the .img file (in case of ttylinux, for example)?

Also, my second question is still actual, and is even more important now, so I
copy it from the previous mail (so that thread can be discarded):
For anyone having experience with SUSE + ONE + KVM (I've seen that there are a
few of you here): could you provide me with an
example template for your configuration, that I could use as a starting
point for my configuration? It would really be a great help.

Aaand, as a last 'bonus' question: is VNC a proper graphical tool to access the
VM's interfaces (like, the Remote Desktop functionality in Windows, for
example), or just provides a CLI for the machines?

Thank you very much,
Lehel.

[one-users] [openSUSE + OpenNebula 3.2.0 + KVM. How to obtain an .img file?]

2012-03-14 Thread biro lehel
Hello everyone,

Regarding my last issue here, the problem with the VNC connection
initialization through Sunstone
was indeed the presence of the line
['TIGHT_PNG',        -260 ],
in rfb.js. Uncommenting it solved the problem; thank you Carlo and Hector for
you prompt feedbacks.

So, at my current progress, I managed to create VM's from the provided ttylinux
image without problems, VNC is also working, I could ssh and ping in all the
possible directions, and, to gain some experience, I even fooled around a bit
with some template attributes to see their effect. So, i guess that "so far, so
good".
Now, my next step would be to do the same thing with VM's created from an
openSUSE image. In order to do this, I would need a raw openSUSE .img file
(just like I had ttylinux.img), but, lacking any experience in the domain, I'm
a little bit helpless regarding the exact way of obtaining such an .img file
for my distribution. I have checked some online documentation, but none of it
really helped. So, my question is, what is the correct and best way to obtain
such a SUSE image, or are there any ways to get it from somewhere? Just for the
record (as stated in the subject), I'm using KVM as hypervisor.

Also, for anyone having experience with SUSE + ONE + KVM (I've seen that are a
few of you here): could you provide me an
example template for your configuration, that I could use a starting
point for my configuration? It would really be a great help.

Thank you very much,

[one-users] noVNC problems AND question about VM images [OpenNebula 3.2.0 on openSUSE]

2012-03-10 Thread biro lehel
Hello again,

First of all, thank you for all your feedback and help so far, it's been
immense! Also, Hector, you
were right in the previous email, the monitoring info is now fine, after I
started the oneacctd daemon (I simply forgot to restart it after some
continuous reboots, stupid me). That single error message with the earlier
timestamp
is still there, but it doesn't seem to bother, so I guess it is not crucial.

My current issue is the following: I managed to create a VM using the ttylinux
image provided by you, and following the documentation at [1]. Everything went
fine, the VM reached its running state, and I managed to passwordlessly ssh
into it. However, I wanted to try the noVNC functionality, since I would
probably use (at least) a graphical console to my VM's in the future. I
installed noVNC with install_novnc.sh (succeeded), added the necessary GRAPHICS
section to ttylinux.one template:

GRAPHICS=[
  LISTEN=0.0.0.0,
  TYPE=vnc ]

, and recreated the VM. As expected, the VNC icon turned active in Sunstone,
however, clicking on it resulted in the following error message:

WebSock error: Illegal basic compression received, ctl: 96

I'm not sure, but I guess I have to make some kind of
 VNC-related
 configurations
on my host machine, but I didn't want to do anything drastic (and also, I have
to leave the computers soon), until I ask for your opinions. The firewall on my
host is disabled. Any suggestions about what shall I do?

Also, and more importantly: my current set-up with the ttylinux VM went
smoothly and without errors. However, in the future, I want to use VM's that
use other images (preferably, a fresh openSUSE 12.1 -or 11.4- install image).
And, it mind sound like a 'noob' question, but I'm not sure how exactly these
image files are created, so that at the end I obtain something like an
openSUSE_.img file.
So, my question is, what should I do, in order to obtain the respective image
file, that I would be able to use like the provided ttylinux.img file? Do I
have to create it
somehow, or are there other method to get/download it? I do have an
installation DVD for both 11.4 and 12.1 versions, if it helps. Also, does the
created VM need to have something specific installed / some specific
configurations done BEFORE the VM deployment (I mean the way in which the image
file is created), or any simple "fresh" (empty, basic) install image will do?

Since my two main questions are unrelated, I would gladly accept any
suggestions or opinions on any of them.

Thank you, and have a great weekend,
Lehel.

Re: [one-users] Monitoring issue right after host creation [No Monitoring Information | OpenNebula 3.2.0]

2012-03-09 Thread biro lehel
Hello,

I managed to resolve the issues regarding the monitoring, by following the
instructions at [1] (sections 7.1.1.1. and 7.1.1.2), and at [2] (the section
regarding PolicyKit). Now, 'onehost show 6' results in the following (see
below).

As you can see, although the monitoring info returned the correct result, it
still contains an error message, which is stuck there from an earlier time (the
timestamp of the error message is not the actual time of the monitoring, it
shows the timestamp of an earlier unsuccessful monitoring try). The oned.log
contains no errors. Also, I suppose because of this error message (which also
appears at the bottom of the "Host Template" tab, with my current Host selected
in Sunstone), the "Monitoring Information" tab shows "There is no monitoring
information for
host 6" both at CPU and Memory info. Any idea how to work this around?

Also, my initial socket problem (I copy the following from messages.log):
Mar  9 10:10:57 pcls libvirtd[5603]: Starting libvirtd WARNING: no socket to
connect to
Mar  9 10:10:57 pcls libvirtd[5603]: ..done

, still persist. This message also appears when trying to run anything related
to 'virsh' on my host,, for ex:

> virsh -c qemu:///system list
WARNING: no socket to connect to
 Id Name State
--

, and also, it appears when running run_probes on my host (although after the
warning, it returns the correct information).

It is kind of bothering me, and I could find the reason of it so far. It is
also making it hard to trace the fact that besides this warning message, no
errors messages are issued nowhere, and I couldn't trace it in the logs
neither, so far. Any ideas what causes this socket warning? Please help.

All the best,
Lehel.

Hi Ruben,

I am using the OpenSUSE package (installed through
YaST). Just to make sure that I did the configurations right (I'm sure I
 didn't):

At (I quote from the documentation): "To be able to use
the images copied by OpenNebula, change also the user and group under
which the libvirtd is run to “oneadmin”", what exactly needs to be done?
I am a Linux-noob (or at least, not at all an expert), so forget me
this question, but how do I set the user and group under which a daemon
is run? I have checked under which user is the libvirtd daemon is
currently running, and indeed it is root (since I probably set it and
put it in init.d as the root user).

Also: "(typically ) has to pertain to the and
groups in order to use the daemon and be able to launch VMs."
What are the
and groups? And how how do I achieve the necessary
configuration?

I did some configuration, but I just want to make sure that I'm not missing
anything (which I probably do).

Ruben? Anyone?

Thank you,
Lehel.

Hi
It seems that a libvirt problem, either is not running at pcls or it is
misconfigured. You have a couple of hints about configuring libvirt for KVM at
[1].
My other concern is your permissions problem. Are you using the OpenSUSE
package or installing from source?

Yes,
I mean the contents of the directory. run_probes, just executes the scripts in
/var/tmp/one/im/kvm.d (in your case). The reason for no output of run_probes is
an empty kvm.d. Could you check the contents of that directory (and execute any

BTW run_probes is a very simple shell script (similar to run_parts) you may
want to execute it with bash -xv /var/tmp/one/im/run_probes kvm 4 pcls

also outputs the expected  data:

I did check the documentation at [1], the only thing missing is that I didn't
perform the following line:
 /etc/default/libvirt-bin : add -l option to libvirtd_opts
, since I didn't have the mentioned file on my machine (I'm running OpenNebula
3.2.0 on an openSUSE 12.1 machine).

I was curious, and I run 'virsh -c qemu' command, resulting in the following:

# virsh -c qemu
WARNING: no socket to connect to
error: internal error unexpected Xen URI path 'qemu', try
///var/lib/xen/xend-socket
error: failed to connect to the hypervisor

Since I want to use KVM, and not Xen, as my hypervisor for OpenNebula, I smell
a problem here. What am I missing? Any help?

Yes,
I mean the contents of the directory. run_probes, just executes the scripts in
/var/tmp/one/im/kvm.d (in your case). The reason for no output of run_probes is
an empty kvm.d. Could you check the contents of that directory (and execute any
script there)?

BTW run_probes is a very simple shell script (similar to run_parts) you may
want to execute it with bash -xv /var/tmp/one/im/run_probes kvm 4 pcls

I didn't try 'onehost sync', but I could try tomorrow morning (since I got home

Any other suggestions?

Hi,
Could you please check the contents of  /var/tmp/one/im/ at pcls? It seems that
there are no probes there. If that's the case you can copy them by hand or use
onehost sync and wait for a monitoring action on the host.

Cheers

Issuing the 'onehost list' command, the result seems to be the one expected.
However, issuing 'onehost show pcls' command results in zero values and NO

Firing the respective command on the host ( /var/tmp/one/im/run_probes kvm 4

Re: [one-users] Can't log onto Sunstone [OpenNebula 3.2.0, OpenSUSE 11.4]

2012-03-08 Thread biro lehel
Indeed, the root of all problems was that
/var/lib/one/remotes/auth/server_cipher/authenticate had no execution
permissions. I managed to log on now into Sunstone without problems. Thank you
Daniel.

But since this is a file created by OpenNebula, shouldn't this behavior be
assured by default? Or at least mentioned somewhere in the documentation? Or is
it an issue with my system? (it's the first time I extensively use openSUSE or
any other Linux distribution) This last question leads to a more important one:
if I had this (seemingly strange) issue, is it possible that I will have
problems caused by similar reasons in the future? What should I check?

Thank you,
Lehel.

In your log there is a "Permission denied" error on
/var/lib/one/remotes/auth/server_cipher/authenticate. Can you check if
the user running oned has execution permissions on this file?

>
>
>    * Who is "serveradmin"? It's the first time I see such a username;

serveradmin is a user used by the servers (EC2, OCCI, Sunstone...) to
authenticate on behalf of other users. You should not authenticate
with this user or change its password, it is a user used by the
system.

You can find the credentials for this user in the following files for
each server
$ ls $ONE_LOCATION/var/.one/
ec2_auth  occi_auth  sunstone_auth

The content of these files should be:
serveradmin:passinplain

So if you changed the serveradmin password using the CLI, oneuser
passwd serveradmin newpassword you have to update those files as
follows:
$ cat sunstone_auth
serveradmin:newpassword

>    * Shouldn't I be logging in with "oneadmin" user, and it's system password
> (the password with which I normally log into my system)?

You have to log in with oneadmin or a different cloud user, but you
never have to use the serveradmin user.

Cheers

Re: [one-users] Version 3.2.0 + MySQL problems

2012-03-05 Thread biro lehel
Hello Jaime,

Thank you very much for your answer. I performed your suggestions, and changed
back the DB backend to SQLite (also, checked the executing permissions you have
mentioned).

However, my initial problem still exists. I can't log on with oneadmin's user
and password to the main Sunstone interface (I get the "OpenNebula is not
running" error each time, written in red above the log-in box, although oned
daemon is started). I checked one.db , to see what password is set for
oneadmin, but I couldn't find any password field.

Any suggestions what should I do?

I attach the contents of oned.log (I just noticed that error related to port
2633, it's the first time it appears here):

Hello Lehel,
if it's not critical to you to have mysql support as you said in your email,
you can always create a symlink where the target is somewhere outside of the
NFS export, like /var/tmp/one.db and pointing to /var/lib/one/one.db:

ln -s /var/tmp/one.db /var/lib/one/one.db
After that OpenNebula will work correctly with a SQLite backend.
If this doesn't fix your problems, try logging in as oneadmin and check that
you can write and execute under /var/lib/one/

Hello,

I have an issue about using OpenNebula with MySQL. I have downloaded and

instructions at [1], although it is probably a problem that I've only made the
necessary changes in oned.conf AFTER running first-time the oned daemon. Now,
at my one.db file (I wanted to check what password is set for oneadmin user) it
says that:

p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; }

"It is an SQLite file created using other tools", and I can't open it. Also,
running oned start (when the backend at oned.conf is set to MySQL) results in
the following:
~> oned start
~> #Aborting oned, MySQL support not compiled!

(although I CAN run onevm list, which is kinda odd to me.)
IMPORTANT NOTE: I only wanted to use MySQL as backend because I use my (only)
host machine as the NFS server (sharing /var/lib/one), and the front-end acts
as the NFS client, and the documentation said that using SQLite in this case
can cause problems. My question: is it such a very important matter, that I
wont be able to work with my host as the NFS server + SQLite as the backend?
I'm using OpenNebula only on a small infrastructure, for a faculty research
project.

oned.log contains the following:

Re: [one-users] application integration (service publishing) in OpenNebula?

2011-12-15 Thread biro lehel
Hello Fabian. Thanks again for your reply. I really appreciate you for taking
the time.

I read what you wrote a couple of times, and (I think) it helped me to clarify
some things. But still, I have a few questions and issues for which I am
looking for a clear answer. I put them in bullets:

As I understand so far, OpenNebula has two types of users: the administrator,
who basically has control over "everything", and the users, who can
authenticate securely, instantiate some VM's, and do the work necessary for
them. My question: can OpenNebula have another "layer" of users, some kind of
"end-users"? What I mean is: suppose I, as a user of OpenNebula, using my
created VM's, create a Web Service, which I publish on the Internet. Can anyone
access this (someone who has no idea about the private cloud, someone who is
simply accessing the URL), and by this way uses my Web Service (created on the
VM's by the means of OpenNebula), so, basically, uses OpenNebula "remotely"
(without knowing it)? Or this just doesn't make sense, since the whole idea of
a private cloud is not to provide/publish information and services to the
outside world, and this is not even possible since the virtual context? Are the
most important reasons for installing OpenNebula
the performance needs? Is there any other reason because of which I may want
to install it, besides the fact that I might need multiple VM's (that I can
manage) to perform a task (and to achieve platform interoperability)? I mean
this has be the main point of it, right? When the load reaches its maximum (on a
task which a user tries to perform on OpenNebula VM's), are new VM's created
automatically (it the physical resources allow this) to support the performace
needs? Or the only way of creating VM's is the "manual" one?Can OpenNebula be
installed on any type of physical network, or does it have some special needs?
Suppose I have an intranet in a company environment, with more interconnected
physical machine that I'm actually going to use, does this change anything? Do
I have to set up a separate physical network for the physical machines that I'm
planning to include in the private cloud?

That's it for now, I don't want to ask for too much information all at once.:)
I really hope that these questions are easy-to-answer for a professional, and
will not take much time (for you Fabian, or for anyone else who thinks that can
help me).

Thank you, and waiting for your response,
Biro Lehel.

Look at the VM like at any other physical computer. It is just a container (eg.
a virtual computer) where you can install the OS of your choice. The
installation of your application inside the OS of your VM needs to be done the
same as you would do it on a physical computer. But the installation of the OS
in the VM needs to be done first. See my recent posting "Re: Creating virtual
machines from scratch" [1] to this mailing list.

  [1]
http://lists.opennebula.org/pipermail/users-opennebula.org/2011-December/007156.html

Look at an OpenNeubla cluster / cloud like on an additional abstraction layer
between a physical computer and your OS installation.

An example:
If you have 3 computers, you can install on each one the OS of your choice and
run it, but then you have only 3 concurrent running OS installation available.
With OpenNebula you need to install Linux on all 3 computers (1x front-end and
2x cluster nodes). The cluster nodes also need to support some kind of
hypervisor (eg. KVM or XEN). Then you install OpenNebula on the front-end and
then adjust the configuration for the shared file systems to be used by the
cluster nodes. Then you can create VMs (virtual machines / virtual computers)
and deploy them through the front-end (with Sunstone you also have a web GUI).
Now you can create as many VMs as the two cluster nodes can support (depending
on CPU power an available memory). You even can stop or terminate VMs and reuse
them (with persistent image) at a later time.

2011-12-11 Thread biro lehel
Hello again.

Does this application which you would like to offer to clients already exist,
or is this something you are developing?

As far as I understand it, you would like to create something like Google Apps
and then offer it to potential customers, right?

Yes, it is something that we're developing. And we are looking for a way for it
to be "publishable" (if there are some special settings or criteria for such an
application to be run inside the cloud). It will
not be a business solution though, we are only doing some experimental
research. Not directly, but through the setup with pre-installed VMs which could
be started on an as needed basis. But in this VMs your "(cloud) application"
needs to be installed and able to run.
This is what I've been referring to. I will have OpenNebula set up, and (as
common sense would tell) I will have my application installed on the created
VM's. My question only referred to: how can I install an application on these
VM's (should I only just copy it, or is it more complex than this), or stuff
like: can the different tiers of the application (interface, business logic,
and data repository) be on different VM's, but most importantly: how can an
end-user (not the administrator, but a potencial client) use the application?
Or there is no such thing as the "end-user / client" concept in OpenNebula,
since the only user is the administrator who has control over the
infrastructure? If OpenNebula provides IaaS support, I suppose this means that
he does not have control over the application only as a service, but rather he,
as the admin, has control over the whole "physical" application?

Thanks,

Lehel

2011-12-11 Thread biro lehel
Hello Fabian. First of all, thanks for your answer.

So, are you telling me, that there is no way for an application to exploit the
advantages of OpenNebula? What is the use of it then? :)
Basically, all I want to do is the following: when I will have OpenNebula set
up and running (on a small scale), I will try to experiment and exemplify its
benefits, by the means of an application that uses the private cloud. Tests,
performance benefits, see how the nodes communicate, etc. But I don't
understand exactly how a web application (for instance) is made and written
such that it can use OpenNebula, it can exploit the benefits of the running
VM's, so that it can be more performant. How is this whole integration done?
How can an application make use of OpenNebula? Couldn't it be "published"
somehow, such that its final users (clients) could use it as a service (through
OpenNebula), in a way that is totally transparent to them? I think what I'm
referring to is exactly this "communication with the outside world" that you
were writing about.

I hope I will get some enlightening.
Thank you,

Lehel.

I am not sure, but I guess you did eventually misunderstand what OpenNebula
does provide. With OpenNebula you will get a framework on which you can run
virtual machines (VMs). You will need to create this VM systems yourself and
then deploy it on the OpenNebula Cloud. The network configuration can be done
very flexible, eg. when using VLAN you could have several network segments on
your cluster node, and those through the bridged interfaces also on the running
VMs. Access to the outside world only depends on your network setup.

Hope this information help.

[one-users] application integration (service publishing) in OpenNebula?

2011-12-10 Thread biro lehel
Hello.

Suppose I have successfully set up a private cloud using OpenNebula. It is only
an experimental approach, so I only have 3 phyisical machines: a main node and
two cluster (worker) nodes.

My question is the following: I have a three-tier (interface, business logic,
data logic) web application, which I want to integrate in OpenNebula (that is,
to publish it as a service). How can I accomplish this? Also, can I publish it
as a service only, or as a whole application, too? Can I pulbish only its
interface? Or what are the other existing possibilities in which the users of
the cloud can "see" my application (if there are any), I mean, what possible
control can they have over it?
Also, what needs to be done on each node to accomplish my goal?

Thank you very much for your answers,
Lehel.

[one-users] installing OpenNebula: system requirements?

2011-11-17 Thread biro lehel
Hello everyone!

I'm new here, but hopefully will try to be a regular member in the next few
months.
To start with, I have a very simple question: what are the system requirement
for a machine on which I'm trying to install OpenNebula? Since I will be
working in partnership with an IT company on my project, they need to know the
parameters of the machine I'm going to work on (including OS, CPU performance,
memory, all necessary software, etc.) This information was not specified on the
official website, that's why I'm trying here.

Also, do I need further physical machines (worker nodes), in order to
experiment with OpenNebula, or could I just install several VM's on the already
existing (main, cluster) node? I need to know how many physical PC's I need. In
the starting phase, I only need to experiment with the cloud, and see what and
how happens, possibly through integrating a simple appication (so you don't
have to think of very complex stuff).

I think these questions are really simple to answer if you have basic knowledge
in the domain, so hopefully someone will be helpful enough to provide me with
an answer.

Thank you in advance.

Hope you all have a good day,

Biro Lehel.
