Also, don't forget that editor themes and the look-and-feel (Dark Metal)
are related but not the same thing. In terms of editor themes
(fonts/colors), if you haven't come across this site before, it might be
worth a look - https://netbeansthemes.com/

Best wishes,

Neil

Not sure what lack of contrast you’re talking about with Darcula. To my eyes
everything that is of interest or always in my face has good contrast - to the
extent possible and still distinguish between different types of text

pretty much white (or close to it) on very dark shades of grey. Everything in
the editor is customizable too (I rarely read comments and find them
distracting, so I gave them less contrast).

In general I avoid white backgrounds like the plague. I attribute my longevity

avoidance of it :-)

"Lack of contrast"? Let's start with the editor window: light gray text on dark
gray background? That's low contrast, and very hard to read. My feeling is, at
least one of foreground color or background color should almost always be full
white or full black.

Regarding your purposefully making comments less contrasty because you find them
"distracting",  Shame on you!

Maybe I can start with darcula and tweak it to something I can use. I'll try.
