I'm not sure why this is necessary: a little experimentation confirms my
impression that simply copying and pasting material from one document to
another automatically carries with it necessary styles.
here a little experimentation confirms my impression the styles are not
carried over. bit of a hurry now but I'll have a deeper look later; most
likely I'm missing some special circumstance. weird.

I'm at 4.1.1.

Just to confirm my experience (in version 4.1.2 under Windows):

I created a new text document with new character, paragraph, and page
styles and saved it as .odt. I even closed OpenOffice. Now I reopened the
document, selected all, and copied and pasted into a new document. The new
document showed all three custom styles. (A manual page break was not
carried over, which confused the issue slightly, but the styles were all
there.)

there must be some special condition differing between your and my setup. I
may try to replicate your experiment exactly but not right this moment;
maybe tomorrow.

I did repeat my experiment:
(a) open new document (OpenOffice 4.1.1 under Linux (Debian));
(b) check default style and applied style: just says 'default' and no
'applied styles'
(c) take heavily formatted document and copy and paste a bit from it into
the 'virgin' document.
(d) check default style and applied style: same as in (b); plus immediately
obvious since the formatted document has 1.5 line spacing while 'virgin' is
single-spaced.

there are differences between your experiment and mine; wouldn't have
thought they'd make a difference ...

You talk of "default" style without saying whether you are talking of page,
paragraph, or character styles.

sorry for being so unclear but I am talking about the field that
appears when you press F11 which regulates a lot of the paragraphing
including font style, etc.

It seems that the default paragraph style in particular is protected
and not overwritten when material is copied in. But the process
works perfectly well, it seems, with styles being automatically
imported, if you use *custom* styles instead of modifying Default.

not sure I understand this. two remarks:

a) it sounds like you are saying that 'default' (via 'F11') will not
be altered by copy and paste; if so, that's what I've observed.

b) it sounds like you are saying other customizations will be altered
by copy and paste; if so, I have not found this to be so - I don't
see them via 'F11' looking at 'applied styles' or at 'custom styles'.

I still haven't do your experiment but I intend to try it.

I probably have misunderstood you though. my apologies in advance; oh
heck, I apologize for past misunderstandings too!

Direct access was removed in Version 4.1 as explained in the section of
the Version 4.1.0 Release Notes at the following link:
.
You can use Thunderbird's export facilities to create a csv file that
can then be imported into an AOO database for use as a data source for
your mailing labels by following the below.

1: Open your Thunderbird Address Book
2: Select the Address book you want to export
3: click Tools->Export
4: A window will open asking where and in what format to export to:
a)Save the file with a name and in a location easy for you to
remember as a comma separated (csv) file.
5: Close the Thunderbird address book window.
6: Open AOO
7: Click File->Wizards>Address Data Source..
a) Select Other external data source
b) Click Next
c) Click Setting's button
d) Select Test from the drop down list
e) Click Next
f) Click Browse button
1. Browse to the location you exported the file in step
   3
g) Click Next
h) Select comma separated value files
i) Click Finish
j) Click Field Assignment Button
k) Use the Drop down lists to map the fields in the data base
to the fields in the csv file
l) The last screen will present a default location and name for
   new database.
a) Click finish to accept defaults
b) Change them
m) Click Finish
The database is now ready to be used as a data source to create your
mailing labels.

As a courtesy I have cc'd your e-mail address as you are not subscribed
to the mailing list. Please reply only to the list and not my e-mail.

Problem with Address Book Data Source Wizard

2016-08-24 Thread BL- Entertainment
Hello,

In Open off I went under File to Wizard and then Address Data Source. I
selected Thunderbird and clicked next but instead of going forward I received
the following error message:

"The connection to the external data source could not be established. No SDBC
driver was found for the given URL."

Then I click on more and get the following:
"SQL Status: HY000
The connection to the external data source could not be established. No SDBC
driver was found for the given URL."
"A connection for the following URL was requested "sdbc:address:thunderbird"."

Can you please tell me how to fix this? Are is there a different way I can use
my contact list to create mailing labels?

Please help,
Sherl

Close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File Explorer. Copy and paste
%appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer Address Bar and press Enter. Delete
or Rename the "user" folder. Start OpenOffice.

This cures most spellcheck problems

The loss of your spellcheck facility most probably occurred because you were
over hasty in powering off the computer before the OO housekeeping was fully
finished. To prevent it happening again, always power the computer down after
using the correct shutdown procedure and wait for all disk activity to finish -
a matter of a few extra seconds to be certain.
