I have Open Office 4.1.3 and the spell checker will not connect to the
dictionary.  It tells me that the dictionary is installed and I have the
language set to English.  Yet, EVERY word is red-underlined as misspelled.

I even removed Open Office, rebooted, and re-installed Open Office. No fix.

What can I do?

OpenOffice does open .docx but sometimes files can be too complex. Try another 
application.
Or ask the sender to resend the file in .doc or .odt or PDF if you don't need 
to edit the file.
