Basic question-Mac user

2023-10-16 Thread JD & Melanie
Is there a download compatible with Mac OS 10.12.6?
All I want to do is be able to open existing Word files and create new on a
computer that previously used Office for Mac 2011.

Thank you.

Where did you download it from???

Just browse openoffice.org,

Once fully downloaded, run it

Re: Can't download

2021-09-17 Thread JD
Yes you will be able to open them, but with some caveats.
MS has kept modifying their office SW so that many features
they put in the documents will not be rendered correctly by
OO.
OO developers have not kept up with the MS sw modifications
or "enhancements", as they like to call it.
Interestingly enough, such docs you create on OO will be fully
compatible with MS office ware.

One solution is to changes the leading zeros to
upper case letter O.
Not an ideal solution, but
the problem is with the CSV formatter, which treats
zip codes as an arithmetic number, where leading zeros
have no arithmetic value, so they are omitted.

OpenOffice 4.1.7: No page borders

2019-11-23 Thread JD
Hi,
I tried to create a document without any left, right, top, or bottom
borders via

Format->Page->Borders

which I set to 0.

But the editor keep starting text at .5 inch offset from the left page's
edge, and wraps at .5 inch offset
from right page's edge.

How do I prevent this from happening?

Thanx

Re: Problem Downloading Open Office

2019-10-04 Thread JD

Dave, be that as it may, a party like Apple or Windows can still
make false claims that the software comes from an untrusted site
and thus prevent it's installation.
Alas, this is part of "software wars" and it will only get worse
unless legislators take steps to prevent it.

Our macOS builds support version 10.7 and greater. Apple has evolved their
Gatekeeper program over this time period. There are ways to get around this and
usually someone will point this out. Try looking at forums.openoffice.org.

Actually you should be concerned about malware from OpenOffice.de where the
windows installer and Linux repos are repackaged by the owner of that domain.

There are ways to verify that you are getting the correct package that involve

to discourage people from using OpenOffice and junp onto the band
wagon of Libre' Office, which many programmers on the inside have
intimated to me privately that it contains malware that transmits one's

if you are on a unix machine or a linux machine,
and your list is a text file (lets say mylist.txt);
then you can eliminate duplicates in this way:

sort -f mylist.txt | uniq > mylist2.txt

the -f option ignores the case of the characters (ie. upper or lower).

ODF or PDF? If PDF, one needs to install the OpenOffice PDF extension, this

Then answer is yes. The license is listed on the website. There is
always a license found in the installation folder of OpenOffice which
you can read or show to a lawyer if you like to verify your right to use

Well, back when I could not afford high speed internet (dialup was allI
could afford),

I found it easier to buy the DVD of the free software online.
The sad part of that I was stung by embedded malware that got installed
by the installation script. But most of the time, things were clean for
most of the online DVD's I purchased.
Getting rid pf the malware was a lot more difficult as it was not recognozed
as such by most AV scanners.
So, I had to reformat the drive and reinstall the OS and all the
packages from their original CD's and DVD's.

I concur this is an example of a user that, while he managed to solve
it in the end, is quite problematic, noisy, and won't follow any
advice longer than one line (even though he succeeded when he finally
tried). And our solution is easy but not super-easy.

I see three ways (two requiring OpenOffice development) to solve this:

1. An OpenOfficeProfileFixer.exe (so to say; I'm note referring to
something that exists) file that simply renames the user profile under
Windows. This will cover the large majority of the clueless users.
This can exist as a separate tool, hosted by an OpenOffice committer
is his personal space at apache.org.

2. An option to "start clean" at install time, that renames a possibly
existing OpenOffice profile.

3. A Tools - Reset default settings menu item that renames the profile
at the next restart of OpenOffice.

There is nothing to fix in the OpenOffice code. Profile corruption
happens due to many factors, but it is not linked to OpenOffice in a
clear way: it involves user profiles that are carried over from
OpenOffice 2.x or 3.x and may already be damaged but working.

So in the end one of the three options above is the best mitigation.

Regards,
  Andrea.

It is NOT true that antivirus software will detect and remove ALL viruses.

If you have access to another computer that does NOT have openoffice,
install it on that computer and run it there to see if the behaviour is
the same.

My experience is that MS word does not play well with docs created
by openoffice, and libreoffice.
I have sent such docs to people who emailed me back and said my doc
was unreadable by MS word.

There is however another Linux free word doc editor: abiword

Just run
sudo yum -y install abiword

It has limitations, but for text only papers, it seems to work OK.
Paginations might not behave the same as on MS word.

Good luck.

 This is a symlink you put there, right?

 YES.
 Reason is that libreoffice has already stolen soffice in /usr/bin,
 and believe it or not, it has also stolen ooffice. Both of which link
 to libreoffice. So I broke the link /usr/bin/oofice - libreoffice
 and made it link to
 /opt/openoffice4/program/soffice.

 Actually it is only the distro LO install that creates soffice links in
 the /usr/bin.

 distro maintainers leave/use:
 $ ls -l /usr/bin/*office*
 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 34 Jun 18 06:02 /usr/bin/libreoffice -
 ../lib/libreoffice/program/soffice
 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 53 Jun 18 04:25 /usr/bin/loffice
 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 34 Jun 18 06:02 /usr/bin/soffice -
 ../lib/libreoffice/program/soffice

 The direct install of LO leaves:

 $ ls -l /usr/bin/*office*
 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 Jul 25 14:22 /usr/bin/libreoffice4.3 -
 /opt/libreoffice4.3/program/soffice

 I recommend just using the desktop file provided:

 code
 #!/usr/bin/env xdg-open

 Type=Application
 Terminal=false
 Icon[en_US]=/opt/openoffice4/program/logo.png

 Comment[en_US]=ApacheOpenOffice
 Exec=/opt/openoffice4/program/soffice
 Name=OpenOffice
 Comment=ApacheOpenOffice
 Icon=/opt/openoffice4/program/logo

 and file a bug report against:
 /opt/openoffice4/program/soffice
 line 119:
 $sd_prog/$sd_binary $@

Yes I know that. Issue is that the use should not have to.
As I had already responded to another list member,
for a script to execute $@ instead of what itself (the script)
fallaciously calls itself (soffice), is totally misleading.
It should execute soffice.bin instead of $@.bin. Otherwise
it should be renamed something different.
Just my opinion :)

small problem launching openoffice from desktop

2014-07-23 Thread JD
created the desktop launcher:
The launcher name is
Open Office
The command is:
/usr/bin/ooffice

in /usr/bin, I have:
$ ls -l /usr/bin/*office*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root jd  32 Jul 23 12:18 /usr/bin/ooffice -
/opt/openoffice4/program/soffice

$ ls -l /opt/openoffice4/program/soffice
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 3720 Apr 22 09:40 /opt/openoffice4/program/soffice

But the launcher fails to launch open office.

I see the following error in /home/jd/.xsession-errors:

/usr/bin/ooffice: line 119: /opt/openoffice4/program/ooffice.bin: No such
file or directory
/usr/bin/ooffice: line 119: /opt/openoffice4/program/ooffice.bin: No such
file or directory
/usr/bin/ooffice: line 119: /opt/openoffice4/program/ooffice.bin: No such
file or directory

However, if I execute /opt/openoffice4/program/soffice from the terminal,
openoffice runs.

So, soffice script takes arg0 and blithely assumes that arg0.bin exists,
and tries
to exec it.

Why should a script assume that? It is at least dangerous, especially if
executed by a superuser!!

 The best way to launch OpenOffice is to make a shell alias. If this is
unacceptable to you, make a one-line shell script that in turn launches
 /opt/openoffice4/program/soffice and it will work too.

I have already created the shell alias. But I was hoping
to launch it from gui because some attachments I get are MS doc types,
and want to automagically open them with
/bin/ooffice
which at this point does no look possible.

 So, soffice script takes arg0 and blithely assumes that arg0.bin
exists,

 Why should a script assume that? It is at least dangerous, especially if

 This is how it works indeed: sd_binary=`basename $0`.bin
 I haven't investigated it further, but if the .bin file needs to be in
the (non user-writable) program directory too this could be a mitigating
factor. Development-related matters are discussed on the dev list
http://openoffice.apache.org/mailing-lists.html where you can raise the
issue or propose patches to the shell script.

My past experience with dev lists have not proven fruitful, and thus I
hesitated to subscribe to the dev list.
