I had that problem and I solved it by right clicking on the file name (inside the folder) and choosing the "open with" option. You will then be given a menu showing all the possible programs available on your computer that might possibly open that file. Choose the Open Office program that matches your file; ex: calc for spreadsheets; writer for letters and other text docs; etc.
