My answer (too late to help you much, but...) is to avoid passwords like the plague unless you have untrustworthy users on your computer (or for Internet links, etc). You've learned why, the hard way. For passwords, I suggest 2 methods. 1. Write down all passwords and lock in a safe physical box. 2. Do not write down your password in any place. Use only one or very few passwords for all accounts. There are some utilities available for purchase which rely on brute force methods to recover the data, but this process may take a long time (days, perhaps).
