Select the file you wish to open in the "File Management" system and right 
click on it, then click on "Open  With".

Set File Associations to OpenOffice for each file type you wish OpenOffice to 
handle.

So, how come you do not tell us about the extension of the files you
claim are being opened as ms word even stuff you down loaded before
ms word.

You do nor say exactly what year it was you "downloaded", and you do not
tell even exactly what year the .doc extension was used my Microsoft???

Was the .doc extension used by MS 
for binary "content" files

even before the adoption of that extension for MS word files???

It seems rather funny if not suspect that problems posted to this
uses email group of Apache OpenOffice, without any clear explanation
of the full nature of the problem, including the nature + extension +
the content of the files you try to open with OpenOffice.
