As open source software, the full source code is available. You don't
have to be much of a developer to edit it and recompile.

Besides, such a notice would be deceptive since there is nothing illegal
about reselling the software. Robbery, on the other hand, is illegal.

Selling OpenOffice can be done in a legal way but we require some fair
behavior of people who do it. See
http://www.openoffice.org/distribution/ and if you see people on Ebay
who do not follow this policy and do not add the notices we require
please ask them that they do so, thanks!

The solution to this is very very simple.

During installation, the package should bring up a banner that says
something like:

This is totally free software.
If you paid for it, you have been robbed.
You can download it for free from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/files/latest/download?source=directory-featured

Also, the banner must not be a script, which can be easily removed from
the package. It should be compiled C or C++ code that cannot be removed
without getting the full source code and removing the message and
recompiling

the whole enchilada.

Cheers,

JD

Actually, your statement is not true.
The overwhelming majority of such ripoff
scums have no clue how to open a sardine
can, let alone rpm packages, or debian packages
or zipped tar packages.

Yes, there are some who can, but most are not into
this sort of crappy activity. The remaining few
are, ... well, .. few.

There are some who sell a CD with OO for a nominal amount. They provide
a service for those who can't download it. On the other hand, there a
some who charge for a download, load it with crapware or claim they
include support and then point the purchaser here for their paid support.
