I know that my ISP does not shut me off and I have ping shut off to

That is not true. You can test any OS with the site. The site just
assumes that all machines connecting are Windows. They apparently
think that Windows is the only OS.

If you have WinXP it should just work. If you have Win2K you have to
tell it what e-mail client to use.

Thanks! Even though I use it selectively for non-subscribed posters, it
does concern me that other list subscribers may find it excessively
long. I keep looking for ways of reducing it's size, but still keep it
meaningful.

IIRC non-subscribed posters receive an automated reply which gives
information about the list. However, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to add:

Do you have a bug reference? You can always install an older version to
see if that corrects the problem. If it does please file a bug report.

I think that jonathan is correct on this issue. Of course someone from
Germany etc., that is running Vista will need to verify.

http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/vista/Vista_Language_Support.mspx
If you enter German here the result will show:

* LP (Language Pack) — LP languages can be added as an additional User
Interface (UI) language to any localized version of Windows Vista
Enterprise or Ultimate.
** LIP (Language Interface Pack) — LIP languages can only be added to
its primary language version of Vista (i.e. Catalan can be installed on
a Spanish version of Vista, but not on a Russian version).

Additional information is here:
http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/reference/oslocversion.mspx
and here
http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/reference/oslocversion.mspx#winVistaLIP
But this last seems confusing as it states:

All Windows Vista LIPs can be installed on top of Windows Vista Home
Premium, Windows Vista Ultimate,Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista
Enterprise

If would be nice if the Gullfoss/Sun folks could clarify this issue once
and for all and a note in the OOo system requirements be made.

I for one don't use Windows anymore, and my latest version on the
dualboot test machine is WindowsXPPro, so I can't provide any further
information.

That said; It would be nice if johnathan could perhaps tone down and/or
correct his standard reponse re Vista from:

to something along the lines of:

You can indeed use OpenOffice with Windows Vista. However, please be
aware that the various versions of Vista limit your ability to do the
following with OpenOffice:

- list *documented* issues with the various versions of Vista

Note that this an Microsoft Operating System issue rather than an
OpenOffice issue. These same issues will also occur when using Microsoft
Office. Reference links are located here:

- provide MS links

OpenOffice is available in over 30 languages and is fully functional in

http://native-lang.openoffice.org/ and/or
http://projects.openoffice.org/native-lang.html for a list of OpenOffice
native language projects.

and leave out the "your version of Windows Vista is crippled" bit.

Except that some versions of Windows Vista don't even let you enter data
in a third language.

What is misleading about telling somebody that their OS might not let
them create/edit a document in a third language?

> Just out of curiosity, which versions of Linux can I install that support
> multiple UILs?

All of them.
[Regardless of whether you meant "On which version of Linux can a user
change the UI language?", or "On which version of Linux can OOo with a
multi-lingual UI run?", or "On which version of Linux can I create a
multi-lingual document?".

If you wanted to know which versions of OOo shipped with a multi-lingual
UI, then:
* OOo 2.0 ZA, includes 11 languages (I think that this was the first
software to ship with a UI for every official language of South Africa.)
* OxygenOffice 2.0.3, includes 5 languages; (I think I have the right
version number. It might have been 2.0.2.)
* OOo 1.1.3-ZA, includes 5 languages;
* Palado Office 1.1.1, shipped with Thai and English. (OOo Clone);
* ? (Commercial OOo 1.1.1 variant) shipped with Hebrew, Russian,
English, and Arabic UI;

There might have been a couple of others. Once OOo was released with
language packs, I stopped looking for executables that included two or
more languages for the UI.

I think that such releases are already available - at least quite a bit of

Sorry I do not think that this is implemented in OpenOffice.org. However you
should really use a database - even the one in OpenOffice.org should be good
for this.

[users] [moderated] Writer TOC saving

2007-08-13 Thread Brian Carberry
I am using version 2.2 of OOo. After saving a document with a TABLE OF CONTENTS
of say 2 levels of headings, when I reopen, it reverts to the full list of
levels (9) and I have to edit the TOC to only run with 2 levels. I realise I
can lock the TOC but with a document that is changing often, this is not so
good either. Can I either lock the levels number for a particular document, or
at best, lock the levels to default to say 2 levels in stead of 9?

Re: [users] [moderated] Opening Excel Files with macros in Calc

2007-08-13 Thread OOo Mac User

Hi,

If you are using a mac try NeoOffice (based on OpenOffice).

It has support for VBA macros and may be able to open your files.
It's also free so you have nothing to lose!

Hope this helps

On 13 Aug 2007, at 22:50, Paul wrote:

To whom it may concern,

I'm not an Open Office user. I'm using OSX 10.4.8.
I'm using Microsoft Office 2004 for Macs.

I'm considering using Calc as I'm having trouble using
some Excel spreadsheets that were originally created
on a PC. One particular spreadsheet that I use has
several macros that don't seem to work on my Mac. For
example, when I'm in Windows and I've opened this
Excel file (with macros) I can click on the cells
that have a drop list which I can access, but when I
try to do the same thing on my Mac I can't see or
access this drop list at all.

So, I'm wondering is if this particular spreadsheet
will in Calc or not?

Standard versions of OOo (available from www.openoffice.org) cannot
run VBA
macro's. OOo has its own macro language and can utilise many others
(eg,

python, beanshell,javascript).

I believe that staroffice has implemented support for VBA and there
are some
other varients available from vendors that have done the same thing
(google

is your friend here).

Your spreadsheet in question will probably open fine in calc,
however the

macro's will not be able to be run.

The OOo (OpenOffice.org) spell check function has to accommodate many
languages and requires a little configuration to ensure it works
correctly for your language/dialect.

If you want the Australian dictionary download the options from this
page: http://www.justlocal.com.au/clients/oooau

For other English variations or languages dictionaries see:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Dictionaries

For a tutorial on spell checking and language configuration see:

Hope this helps.

The basic OOo (OpenOffice.org) is a very large program to download and
there are a wealth of extras (templates, clipart, etc.) available which
are not included with the basic download.

Look for Writer resume/cv templates from the following link:
http://documentation.openoffice.org/Samples_Templates/index.html

You can find other templates by "Googling" for "openoffice templates".

See the OOo help facility for information about organizing/importing
templates.

Good luck with your job hunting.

Two things first: 1) what operating system are you using, 2) what
version of OOo are you using?

Suggestion: try to do a "Save As" and see if it will save as a MS Word
document. Also try to do a "Save As" as an OOo document (.odt) using a
different file name. I suspect that somewhere along the line that file
locking has kicked in.

Was by chance your granddaughter's trojan message trojan.cryptor? If so,
please read this from the Kapersky forum:

Lucian Bara

hello
trojan.cryptor is a proactive defense popup, it occurs when a program
tries to encrypt data. if the program you are working with is a known
application, you can safely add it to the trusted zone in the popup.
the widget engine might encrypt some personal information so that it
can't be viewed that easily by other programs

OOo uses encryption for password protection.

Have you checked the md5sum?
See: http://download.openoffice.org/2.2.1/md5sums.html

The following is quoted from a previous post to this list:

This is a very common problem with Windows users. Harold Fuchs has
suggested the following:

1. Disconnect your computer completely from the internet.
2. Disable your Antivirus (AV) and firewall software.
3. Try the install again.
4. Regardless of the result, restart your AV and firewall and reconnect
to the internet. Never leave your system connected to the net if your AV
and firewall are not both running properly.

If the above does not work, read the Microsoft article at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301. Download and run the program
it talks about.

Hope this helps.

Dave

hello
trojan.cryptor is a proactive defense popup, it occurs when a program
tries to encrypt data. if the program you are working with is a known
application, you can safely add it to the trusted zone in the popup.
the widget engine might encrypt some personal information so that it
can't be viewed that easily by other programs

And yes, OOo does use encryption if you set a password.

It sounds as if your granddaughter may have found this bug:
http://www.viruslist.com/en/viruses/encyclopedia?virusid=123066
or perhaps CVE-2006-5870: WMF/EMF Processing Failures

Please have your granddaughter: 1) run full antivirus scans on her
computer, and 2) update to the latest version of OpenOffice (2.2.1).

[users] Re: Linux Printing - Fails to change Paper Tray

2007-08-13 Thread Bob - OpenOffice

On 08/10/2007 08:13 AM, Bob - OpenOffice wrote:

I have a documents that need to pull from multiple different paper
trays. For example: a letter page followed by an envelope, or a piece
of letterhead followed by plain paper.

I can set the paper trays per page via the page style. Doing this
under Windows and the change or switch to a different paper tray
works fine. However, under Linux the switch to a different paper tray
does not work, the entire document is printed from the tray used on
the first page.

I am using OpenOffice 2.2.1. Windows is XP, Linux is RHEL5, CUPS is
1.2.4. The printers are HP LaserJet, the PPDs are the latest I can
find via linuxprinting.org.

Any idea where the problem is? How to trouble shoot or work around?
Pointers to other URLs?

Any help is greatly appreciated!! :-)

I think it's a CUPS/OS issue. Can you try a different application (Gimp
or Acrobat Reader for example) to see if those applications can change
the tray settings in linux? I've had similar problems using
Ubuntu/Debian linux drivers for my Canon & finally ended up purchasing
the Turboprint drivers.

I don't believe this is a driver issue, the PPDs are supposedly from HP and
have been static for an extended period. Perhaps there is a better set of PPDs
than those available via CUPS. Anyone?

My current assessment is that this is a bug in OpenOffice that appeared between
2.1.0 and 2.2.0. Anyone have anymore insight?

I don't know how or why gimp would change printer trays in the middle of
printing an image. Sounds like a spurious test.

Anyone know how to embed printer codes into a document? Not my prefer erred
method of solving this problem, but if openoffice can't handle it, I need some
sort of work around.

Then maybe your boss should contact Microsoft and be as adamant that they
disclose the Visio file format. If this is done, then OOo (and others) will
be enabled to read, open, edit and save Visio files.

OOo doesn't support visio file formats at the moment. You will need to
either install visio file viewer (if there is such a thing), or ask the user
to send you the visio file as a series of graphics (eg, jpg).

Thanks for the help,

I'm not too sure of my ground here so perhaps someone could help me (and the
OP) if I get things wrong ...

First, a definition: I'm going to use the term User Interface Language (UIL)
to mean the language in which menus, help text and so on are displayed. If
this is not the correct definition, please someone let me know what is the
correct meaning.

Given that definition, it seems to me that the UIL for Windows (a) has very
little to do with the UIL for OO, which is handled by OO's language packs
and (b) has nothing at all to do with the language of one's documents.

Also using that definition, it seems to me that most people are happy to
work with a single UIL provided they can create documents in different
languages with the implied correct spell and/or grammar checking
functionality. In the context of OO, writing and checking documents in
different languages is nothing at all to do with the UIL and is a question
of downloading and installing the correct dictionaries and of possibly
creating appropriate styles.

I freely admit there will be many small groups of users e.g couples of
different nationalities of a single computer where different users would
prefer to work with different UILs and that not having that facility in the
"home" versions of Vista is a shortcoming. But I still don't see how it
impacts on OO.

It also seems to me that telling the OP of this thread that he won't be able
to use different languages for his documents on some versions of Windows is
misleading to say the least. Or

Just out of curiosity, which versions of Linux can I install that support
multiple UILs?

The big issue is how crippled is the version of Windows Vista that you
are using.

If you use version of Windows Vista other than:
* Windows Vista Ultimate Limited Edition;
* Windows Vista Ultimate Edition;
* Windows Vista Enterprise Edition;
your version of Windows Vista is crippled. This will have a negative
impact on the functionality of OOo. This is because Windows Vista is
Defective by Design.
